17. Adaptive Optics Science with the MMT Adaptive Secondary: Mid-IR AO Imaging of the Post-AGB Star AC Her.

Abstract

The world's first adaptive secondary has been commissioned at the 6.5m MMT. Early science results suggests that it is unique and highly productive. Nearly diffraction-limited 0.07" H band images have been obtained of the Trapezium core [Close et al. 2003b]. Moreover, an adaptive secondary makes low emissivity Mid-IR (8-20 micron) AO science possible for the first time. We have obtained the first Mid-IR AO results with Strehls of ~100% from 8-20 microns. The very high PSF stability at such Strehls has allowed us to rule out any extended (>0.2′′) structure around the post-AGB stars AC Her and Alpha Her [Close et al. 2003c]. In addition, Biller et al. (2003) has used this PSF stability to obtain super-resolutions through deconvolution. The resulting 0.1" images of the AGB star RV Boo detects a dust disk for the first time [Biller et al. 2003]. 25. THE STRUCTURE OF THE ? LEONIS DEBRIS DISK

Abstract

We combine nulling interferometry at 10 mm using the MMT and Keck Telescopes with spectroscopy, imaging, and photometry from 3 to 100 mm using Spitzer to study the debris disk around b Leo over a broad range of spatial scales, corresponding to radii of 0.1 to [?]100 AU. We have also measured the close binary star o Leo with both Keck and MMT interferometers to verify our procedures with these instruments. The b Leo debris system has a complex structure: (1) relatively little material within 1 AU; (2) an inner component with a color temperature of [?]600 K, fitted by a dusty ring from about 2-3 AU; and (3) a second component with a color temperature of [?]120 K fitted by a broad dusty emission zone extending from about [?]5 AU to [?]55 AU. Unlike many other A-type stars with debris disks, b Leo lacks a dominant outer belt near 100 AU.

26. Resolving the Dusty Circumstellar Structure of the Enigmatic Symbiotic Star CH Cygni with the MMT Adaptive Optics System

Abstract

We imaged the symbiotic star CH Cyg and two PSF calibration stars using the unique 6.5 m MMT deformable secondary adaptive optics system. Our high-resolution (FWHM = 0.''3), very high Strehl (98% +- 2%), mid-infrared (9.8 and 11.7 mm) images of CH Cyg allow us to probe finer length scales than ever before for this object. CH Cyg is significantly extended compared to our unresolved PSF calibration stars (m UMa and a Her) at 9.8 and 11.7 mm. We estimated the size of the extension by convolving a number of simple Gaussian models with the m UMa PSF and determining which model provided the best fit to the data. Adopting the Hipparcos distance for this object of 270 pc, we found a nearly Gaussian extension with a FWHM at 9.8 mm of ~40.5 +- 2.7 AU (0.''15 +- 0.''01) and a FWHM at 11.7 mm of 45.9 +- 2.7 AU (0.''17 +- 0.''01). After subtracting out the Gaussian component of the emission (convolved with our PSF), we found a faint ~ 0.''7 asymmetric extension, which peaks in flux ~0.''5 north of the stars. This extension is roughly coincident with the northern knotlike feature seen in HST WFPC2 images obtained in 1999.

29. Precision Time-series Photometry in the Thermal Infrared with a "Wall-eyed" Pointing Mode at the Large Binocular Telescope

Abstract

Time-series photometry taken from ground-based facilities is improved with the use of comparison stars due to the short timescales of atmospheric-induced variability. However, the sky is bright in the thermal infrared (3-5 ?m), and the correspondingly small fields of view of available detectors make it highly unusual to have a calibration star in the same field as a science target. Here, we present a new method of obtaining differential photometry by simultaneously imaging a science target and a calibrator star, separated by ?2 amin, onto a 10 × 10 asec2field-of-view detector. We do this by taking advantage of the Large Binocular Telescope's (LBT) unique binocular design to point the two co-mounted telescopes apart and simultaneously obtain both targets in three sets of observations. Results indicate that the achievable scatter in LS-band (?m) is at the percent level for bright targets and possibly better with heavier sampling and characterization of the systematics.
