Credibility refers to the trustworthiness, genuineness, and plausibility of the research findings and has always been a contentious issue in qualitative research, particularly for those conducting studies on the hermeneutic phenomenology paradigm. The relationship between credibility and high qualitative research is noted by many qualitative scholars. Member checking, also known as participant or respondent validation, is a technique for exploring the credibility of results where data or results are returned to participants to check for accuracy and resonance with their experiences. Although member-checking has long been accepted as the gold standard in quantitative research, research shows that it is not the pinnacle for expressing rigor in Heideggerian hermeneutic phenomenology because it contradicts many of the underpinning philosophies. Within this article the author explores how member checking has been used in published research and presents a brief overview of the various discourses on member checking in qualitative research. The author discusses the importance of evaluating whether the method fits with the theoretical position of a study and the importance to consider how member checking was undertaken and for what purpose. It is essential that researchers are transparent about what they hope to achieve with the method and how their claims about credibility and validity fit with their epistemological stance. Background: Traditional health practitioners (THPs) understand spirit possession as a cultural or religious spirit occupying a person, while the mental healthcare providers understand it as a mental illness. The different understanding is based on manifestations that mimic that of mental illness, such as seeing and hearing things that others cannot see or hear. Spirit possession holds different meanings in different cultures and religions that could be either beneficial or detrimental. Furthermore, spirit possession is understood as a channel of communication between the living and the dead or God or a supernatural phenomenon in which a spirit owns a person. Aim: This study explored and interpreted THPs' understanding of spirit possession in Gauteng province, South Africa. Method: Hermeneutic phenomenology study explored and interpreted the THPs' understanding of spirit possession in Gauteng province. In-depth individual interviews were conducted with 12 THPs who were selected through snowball sampling techniques. Data analysis followed Heidegger's and Gadamer's philosophies and Van Manen's six steps of the analytic approach. Results: The findings revealed that THPs understood spirit possession as spiritual illness, ancestral calling and demonic spirit or witchcraft. Conclusion: Traditional health practitioners' understanding of spirit possession could promote mental health and prevent mental illness by providing support to a spirit-possessed person and referral to mental healthcare services. Contribution: This study contributed that not all manifestations presented by persons with spirit possession are actual and clear-cut mental illness, but could be unwritten cultural and/or religious illnesses that needs cultural and religious services also. Background: Telemedicine has the potential to remove geographic and temporal obstacles to health care access. Whether and how telemedicine can increase health care access for underserved populations remains an open question. To address this issue, we integrated facilitated telemedicine encounters for the management of hepatitis C virus (HCV), a highly prevalent condition among people with opioid use disorder (OUD), into opioid treatment programs (OTPs). In New York State, OTPs are methadone-dispensing centers that provide patient-centered, evidence-based treatment for OUD. We investigated the integration and impact of facilitated telemedicine into OTP workflows in these settings. Objective: This study aims to understand OTP staff experiences with integrating facilitated telemedicine for HCV treatment into OTPs, including best practices and lessons learned. Methods: We conducted semistructured interviews with 45 OTP staff members (13 clinical, 12 administrative, 6 physicians, and 14 support staff members) at least one year after the implementation of facilitated telemedicine for HCV management. We used hermeneutic phenomenological analysis to understand OTP staff experiences. Results: We identified 4 overarching themes illustrating the successful integration of facilitated telemedicine for HCV care into OTPs. First, integration requires an understanding of the challenges, goals, and values of the OTP. As OTP staff learned about new, highly effective HCV therapies, they valued an HCV cure as a "win" for their patients and were excited about the potential to eliminate a highly prevalent infectious disease. Second, the integration of facilitated telemedicine into OTPs fosters social support and reinforces relationships between patients and OTP staff. OTP staff appreciated the ability to have "eyes on" patients during telemedicine encounters to assess body language, a necessary component of OUD management. Third, participants described high levels of interprofessional collaboration as a care team that included the blurring of lines between disciplines working toward a common goal of improving patient care. Study case managers were integrated into OTP workflows and established communication channels to improve patient outcomes. Fourth, administrators endorsed the sustained and future expansion of facilitated telemedicine to address comorbidities. Conclusions: OTP staff were highly enthusiastic about facilitated telemedicine for an underserved population. They described high levels of collaboration and integration comparable to relevant integrative frameworks. When situated within OTPs, facilitated telemedicine is a high-value application of telemedicine that provides support for underserved populations necessary for high-quality health care. These experiences support sustaining and scaling facilitated telemedicine in comparable settings and evaluating its ability to address other comorbidities. Caesarean section (CS) rates are increasing worldwide, an increase that is multifactorial and not well understood. There is considerable variation in the rates of vaginal birth after previous Caesarean section (VBAC). Cultural differences could be one explanation of the varying rates. To interpret cultural perspectives on VBAC. A hermeneutic approach for analysing findings from four published qualitative studies that were part of the OptiBIRTH study, focusing on clinicians and women's views of important factors for improving the rate of VBAC. 115 clinicians and 73 women participated in individual interviews and focus group interviews in countries with low rates (Germany, Italy and Ireland) and countries with high rates (Sweden, Finland and the Netherlands), in the original studies. Three themes demonstrated how the culture differs between the high and low VBAC rate countries; from being an obvious first alternative to an issue dependent on many factors; from something included in the ordinary care to something special; and from obstetrician making the final decision to a choice by the woman. The fourth theme, preparing for a new birth by early follow-up and leaving the last birth behind, reflects coherence between the cultures. The findings deepen our understanding of why the VBAC rates vary across countries and healthcare settings, and can be used for improving the care for women. In order to improve VBAC rates both maternity care settings and individual professionals need to reflect on their VBAC culture, and make make changes to develop a 'pro-VBAC culture'. Late-term pregnancy is related to increased risk of serious complications for babies and women, as pregnancies proceed. Pregnancy is an individual, complex and existential situation for women, who may experience late-term pregnancy as a mentally strenuous period, characterised by worries and anxiety. However, there is a lack of studies in this area. To describe women's experiences of late-term pregnancy ≥41 gestational weeks. A lifeworld hermeneutic approach was used. Qualitative interviews were performed with ten women, two to seven months after the birth. Six themes emerged from the analysis Doubting the body's ability to cope with the transition from pregnancy to giving birth, The importance of their partner's support during the sea voyage, Lacking clear guidelines for the voyage, Worrying about the cargo at the end of the voyage, How the voyage turned out and Thoughts related to a future voyage. The women did not feel sufficiently empowered to trust their body's ability to make the transition from late pregnancy to birth. It is vital that midwives provide clear guidance and empower women to trust the ability of their body to give birth. The purpose of this hermeneutic enquiry was to explore the lived experiences of family members over the first two years after a person's first-time stroke. A stroke can have significant consequences for the person surviving a stroke and their family, causing altered life experiences and responsibilities. Consequences differ according to stroke type, location and severity with varying effects on the experiences of families' post-stroke. This study was part of a larger four-year longitudinal hermeneutic phenomenological inquiry, informed by the writings of van Manen, aimed at improving support and outcomes for stroke survivors and their families. The parent project recruited five families in 2011 from a city hospital in Aotearoa New Zealand, with one family of four participants agreeing to participate in this particular study. Participants included the stroke survivor's spouse (primary caregiver), two of her adult children and the partner of one of these (n=4). A series of three semi-structured interviews with all participants occurred at six weeks, and at one and two years post-stroke. Data were analysed thematically. The findings revealed that stroke can have life-altering consequences for the stroke survivor and their family. This research highlighted the lived experience of a family two years post-stroke and the variation in experience over time and between participants. Our participants experienced shock, continual change, and deepening devotion with far-reaching implications. We recommend completing family assessments to determine a family's post-stroke situation and their capacity and desire to participate in the care as well as enhancing communication and information provision. Nurses and other health professionals must ascertain the needs of stroke survivors and families and provide family-oriented care that is regardful of their needs. Abstract Background Knowledge development, and how student nurses learn to be nurses, is essential in nurse education and has implications for quality of care. There is a lack of research concerning how student nurses' knowledge development is expressed through narratives and how they deal with challenges in patient situations in professional learning. Objectives To clarify the usefulness of narratives in student nurses' knowledge development and the narratives implications for learning in clinical training. Design and methods The study has a qualitative design with field methodology. Data consisted of observations, interviews, and fieldnotes. The data was analysed, and narratives were developed using Gadamer's hermeneutical circle. Participants and settings Seven first- and second-year student nurses from a bachelor programme were closely followed in different patient situations during their eight weeks of clinical studies in nursing homes. Results In a sample narrative, a student nurse explained how she reflected on her actions and decisions made when she shielded a patient who was in a difficult situation. Conclusion Narratives are useful for the development of student nurses' knowledge in clinical training. Student nurses' decisions and actions in the patient situation are made evident through narratives. Nursing educators and student nurses awareness of the relevance of this knowledge for understanding student nurses learning processes is of importance in professional education. Nursing educators should be more open minded to narratives as a starting point for reflection. Increased use of narratives in professional education will contribute to development of knowledge so that student nurses can manage to face patient situations as long as the situation themselves demands. The study explores how outpatient children experience the encounter with a hospital clown; a topic which is dimly described in the existing literature. The study had a qualitative design with a phenomenological-hermeneutical approach, and consisted of participant observations of 14 children aged 2-11 years, of whom 10 children aged 5-11 years were interviewed in 2014. Data from the observations and interviews were analysed through a Ricoeur-inspired method of structural analysis. Results of the study show that, the hospital clown being contrasting and unpredictable enables the children to feel free to play. Feeling free to play and receiving a symbolic lucky stone from the hospital clown helps the children to cope with hospitalization. To some children, who become afraid of the hospital clown, it is important that there is a turning point, where the children open up and starts to thrive. In contrast to previous studies, this study shows that, the children are apparently not experiencing anxiety, but instead fear and nervousness. In conclusion, the study highlights the importance of children's play during a hospitalization. Furthermore, health professionals should be aware to children's reaction to a hospital clown and help children to cope with their feelings of being afraid and nervous. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: This research aims to describe the intensive care patients' perception of a delirium. Research methodology: A hermeneutic qualitative research was designed using semi-structured interviews. Adult patients admitted between December 2011 and April 2012 to the intensive care unit of a Belgian public hospital, scoring positive for delirium at least once, were eligible for this study. At least 48 hours after the last positive score for delirium, the patients could be interviewed. Data saturation was achieved after 30 patients. Results: Several patients spontaneously indicated the recollection of the delirium, whereas others needed a few questions or needed the specificity of the syndrome to be pointed out. The analysis of the qualitative data resulted in four major themes: (1) contact and communication, (2) feelings, (3) sleep and time and (4) implication of the delirious episode. Conclusion: Interviewees recollected a vivid delirium with unrealistic scenes. The study delivered a first understanding of patients' perceptions during a delirium. This qualitative research tried to image the patients' perceptions providing nurses, physicians, other health-care workers as well as patients and their family with a better insight into the syndrome. A scarcity of emotional reflexive research accounts exists within the field of tourism studies, whereby the embodied and emotional researcher is epistemologically accepted as intersecting with the entire research process. This paper seeks to address this gap by exploring one researcher’s emotional entanglements with her research project, within the context of return from long term travel. These entanglements are discussed in terms of their effect on the researcher personally (including her ‘unravelling’ of the entanglements through poetry) and their effect on the research process itself, particularly regarding issues of representation, authority, power and balance of voice. This research studies Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. The objectives are to describe the Greek mythology presented in the novel, the intention of Rick Riordan, and the reception of the readers. The methodology is hermeneutic referring to Recoeur's theory. It was found that, first, the Greek mythology presented in the novel is blended with American real life; second, the main character is a son of a Greek mythology god and a real American woman and, third, the setting is a blend of places in Greek mythology and real American cities. The intention of Riordan is to open up American culture that is lived through by Americans, that a part of American culture is Greek mythology. Many mothers initiate breastfeeding, but some of these experience difficulties. This study has two aims in order to contribute to the development of optimal care for these mothers: firstly to explain and understand the existential meanings of one mother’s severe initial breastfeeding difficulties and how these meanings affected her continued breastfeeding and secondly, to reflect on a method for applying lifeworld hermeneutics to research on complex breastfeeding phenomena. This is an approach that acknowledges and focuses on the concrete and lived existence and what it means for humans. Within this approach, humans are understood as whole human beings interacting in the world. The study was conducted using lifeworld interviews with Anna, focusing on meanings of her difficult lived experience of initial breastfeeding. The existential interpretation suggests that such an experience can evoke existential vulnerability, a vulnerability that becomes evident in shameful feelings, such as dislike of breastfeeding, aversion to the milk-producing body and anger towards the child. Anna continued breastfeeding as a way to rid herself of the shame, hoping to be confirmed as a good mother. Such an experience may have negative consequences for the mother-child relationship and it can create fear for future breastfeeding. Hermeneutic phenomenological methods were used to explore nurses' perspectives on the phenomenon of end-of-life care within the hospital setting. Three main themes described participants' experiences: "Confronting Challenges," "Coming to Understand End-of-Life Care," and "Transforming the Understanding of End-of-Life Care into Nursing Practice." This dissertation study turned to the realm of philosophy and particularly hermeneutic phenomenology to gain deep understanding of the museum visit experience, particularly in terms of what it reveals about: the connection between human experience and museums; the work of museums as sites of exploring the question of 'being-in-the-world' and 'being-with-others-in-the-world;' and the essential role of museums as communal and cultural institutions. Six themes emerged from the data: seeing the self; experiencing others' experiences; being at the fusion of horizons; mindful presence; embodied experience; and touching and being touched. While not discussed explicitly in terms of what it means to 'be-in-the-world' and to 'be-with-others-in-the-world,' participants engaged in deep consideration of memory, identity, relationship across time and place, spirituality, life meaning and mortality. The act of being in conversation, which was at the center of how people encountered objects in the museum, emerged from this study as a defining feature of the museum experience. The article is a guided tour to Alfred Lorenzer's proposal for an "in-depth hermeneutic" cultural analysis methodology which was launched in an environment with an almost complete split between social sciences and psychology/psychoanalysis. It presents the background in his materialist socialization theory, which combines a social reinterpretation of the core insights in classical psychoanalysis -- the unconscious, the drives -- with a theory of language acquisition. His methodology is based on a transformation of the "scenic understanding" from a clinical to a text interpretation, which seeks to understand collective unconscious meaning in text, and is presented with an illustration of the interpretation procedure from social research. Then follows a brief systematic account of key concepts and ideas -- interaction forms, engrams, experience, symbolization, language game, utopian imagination -- with an outlook to the social theory connections to the Frankfurt School. The practical interpretation procedure in a Lorenzer-based psycho-societal research is briefly summarized, emphasizing the role of the researcher subjects in discovering socially unconscious meaning in social interaction. Finally an outlook to contemporary epistemological issues is given. Abstract: Background: This paper considers the dwelling space of postnatal care, how being-there feels for the woman going through the experience of matrescence. The research takes a hermeneutic approach and draws on philosophical notions from Heidegger. Question: ‘What is the nature of the dwelling space of valued postnatal care?’. Methods: Appropriate ethics approval was gained. Participants were midwives, nurses, women, and other relevant stakeholders. There were 4 focus groups involving 11 participants and 19 individual interviews. Data collection was conducted over a one week period by a team of three researchers. An interview schedule had been organised by the administrator at the Centre. Participants chose whether to come to the centre to be interviewed, or be interviewed in their own homes. Most interviews were an hour. All interviews were tape recorded and transcribed, with the participant's permission. Data was analysed through a hermeneutic process set in the context of related literature. Findings: When women are invited into a dwelling space that strengthens them they feel ‘mothered’: being listened to, have their needs anticipated, and are cared for in a loving manner. In such a way they grow confidence. A child health nurse reported the difference such care made to on-going mothering at home. Implications for practice: All women deserve a dwelling space in their early days of matrescence. Small birthing centres perhaps achieve such care and ambience more easily than large institutional units. Nevertheless, wherever the place, practices need to be enabled that foster the spirit of dwelling. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The article is a guided tour to Alfred LORENZER's proposal for an "in-depth hermeneutic" cultural analysis methodology which was launched in an environment with an almost complete split between social sciences and psychology/psychoanalysis. It presents the background in his materialist socialization theory, which combines a social reinterpretation of the core insights in classical psychoanalysis-the unconscious, the drives-with a theory of language acquisition. His methodology is based on a transformation of the "scenic understanding" from a clinical to a text interpretation, which seeks to understand collective unconscious meaning in text, and is presented with an illustration of the interpretation procedure from social research. Then follows a brief systematic account of key concepts and ideas-interaction forms, engrams, experience, symbolization, language game, utopian imagination-with an outlook to the social theory connections to the Frankfurt School. The practical interpretation procedure in a LORENZER-based psycho-societal research is briefly summarized, emphasizing the role of the researcher subjects in discovering socially unconscious meaning in social interaction. Finally an outlook to contemporary epistemological issues. Summary: Aim: The aim of this study was to observe, interpret and describe nurses’ communication with conscious patients receiving mechanical ventilation treatment (MVT) in an intensive care unit (ICU), and to examine if such communication could be interpreted as caring. Design: Hermeneutic observational study inspired by the philosophy of Gadamer. Method: Nineteen patients were observed on several occasions for a total of 66hours, when conscious during MVT. Findings: A form of caring communication was identified and interpreted as comprising seven themes: being attentive and watchful, being inclusive and involving, being connected, remaining close, being reassuring and providing security, keeping company and using humour and using a friendly approach. Communication that mediated a non-caring approach was also identified and described under two thematic headings, i.e. being neglectful and being absent. Conclusions: Caring is communicated by the caring act of “standing-by” the patient. Caring or non-caring is communicated in non-verbal and verbal communication, in the words used, the tone of voice and behaviour, as well as in the performance of nursing care activities. Abstract: A wide range is carried out in catheterization laboratories in radiological departments everyday. In Sweden, the nurse radiographers are usually responsible for patient care, medical technical equipment, and sterility during interventional radiology. The competence of a nurse radiographer is mainly equated with that of registered nurses. The aim of this qualitative study was to describe nurse radiographers’ experiences of caring for patients undergoing radiological interventions at the catheterization laboratories. The study is based on individual interviews analyzed using a hermeneutic approach. “Sensing and responding to the patient” was the main theme that appeared in this study from the radiographers’ descriptions of their encounters with patients undergoing radiological intervention. The meaning of this main theme is based on four themes; creating a trusting atmosphere, creating a dialogue, dealing with unpredictable outcomes, and dealing with pain and agony. Over approximately the past half century classicists have been redefining themselves in far-reaching ways both as scholars and teachers. In essence, the study of ancient Greco-Roman civilization, including the surviving literary texts, the "classics" par excellence, is no longer governed by exclusively or even largely philological objectives leading to the establishment of the authentic ancient text and the correct authorial meaning thereof. Even those classicists who have not engaged in sustained reflection on the hermeneutical and methodological premises underlying their scholarship have not been left untouched by this development, the decisive impetus for which was pedagogical rather than occasioned by purely scholarly or philosophical motives. After the Second World War, the classics had to be increasingly taught, especially in North America, to 'Latin-less' students who had not acquired the basics of at least one of two classical languages, Latin and ancient Greek, in their secondary school years. In what was surely the most drastic revamping of the classical curriculum at the university level since the Renaissance, the teaching of the "classics in translation" courses (as they were often dubbed, sometimes disparagingly) encouraged holistically--above all, socio-culturally--framed modes of enquiry which were also carried through into graduate studies and classical scholarship. This new turn in teaching and scholarship accelerated a development which had already begun in the second half of the 19th century, when the emerging social sciences (sociology and anthropology in particular) began to interface with classical studies, and philological modes of scholarly enquiry were, in the work of some classicists, replaced by largely socio-culturally focused modes. Here the work of French and German scholars was especially innovative and was facilitated enormously by the establishment of the ancillary disciplines of scientific archaeology, epigraphy, and papyrology. Far more complex and nuanced understandings of Greco-Roman antiquity have emerged in this process of scholarly refocusing and indeed transformation. These cannot be explained or even accurately described by means of a simply positivist-empirical epistemology which views progress in knowledge and understanding, also in the humanities and social sciences, in terms of the accumulation and organization of factual knowledge. Thomas Kuhn's notion of paradigm shift provides a helpful corrective, but it is concerned primarily with the natural sciences. In any case, the Cartesian model of the subject (=e.g. classicist) : object (=e.g. Greco-Roman antiquity) relationship is inadequate. A more dynamic hermeneutic characterized by symbolic interactionist and semiotic perspectives views the individual classicist scholar-teacher, as well as the collectivity of classicists, as constantly constituting and reconstituting Greco-Roman civilization with new meanings, and in doing so, also fashioning and refashioning their own life-worlds, inclusively, of course, of their professional identities as classicists. Hans-Georg Gadamer's hermeneutic of the "fusion of horizons" is helpful in our epistemological fleshing out, as it were, of the scholar's engagement with the classical world, and fits well with symbolic-interactionist and semiotic perspectives. Indeed, the synthesis of perspectives I propose makes the idea of a classical tradition reaching from Greco-Roman antiquity into the present age especially meaningful, and makes for a highly visible and contemporary role for the classicist as an academic and intellectual in our culture.
