The question as to the relationship that exists between measures of self and performance/achievement has long been the focus of research endeavour. This study compares the conclusions drawn from a traditional review of literature relating to self and performance with those arising from a meta-analysis of the same area.

In order to develop accurately the curriculum and syllabus for any inservice training program it is necessary to first establish the needs of the target audience. In this study the Delphi technique was used to obtain a list of perceived needs of staff working in the field of residential care for people with developmental disabilities. The second round of the study gave these staff the opportunity to set the priorities for meeting these needs.

This paper presents a procedure for identifying performance indicators of research attainment and highlights some definitional issues of the chosen performance indicators. Both the procedure for identification and the definition of performance indicators need to be reconciled prior to the implementation of models of performance indicators, if the model is to have a high probability of becoming accepted within a university context.

Since 1977 there has been considerable debate regarding the relative efficacy of meta-analysis as a research methodology. The authors implemented a meta-analysis to examine the question of the nature of the association between self-perception and performance or achievements levels. The study (128 research studies; 1136 correlations) made us aware of the problems associated with designing and implementing a meta-analysis. This paper discussed in some detail the problems encountered, namely topic selection, the literature search, coding procedures, sampling the literature, the use of a common metric, the use of significance tests, costs and time involved, and publication.
