We evaluated the effectiveness and safety of direct-acting antivirals in adolescents with hepatitis C (HCV)/HIV coinfection using pooled individual patient-level data from 5 European cohorts. Of 122 participants in follow-up from November 2013 to August 2021, 19 were treated <18 years of age; of 15 with HCV RNA available at/after 12 weeks post-treatment, all had sustained virologic response with acceptable safety. This evidence addresses an important gap in knowledge of treatment outcomes in adolescents with HCV/HIV coinfection in real-life settings.

Thermosets present sustainability challenges that could potentially be addressed through the design of deconstructable variants with tunable properties; however, the combinatorial space of possible thermoset molecular building blocks (e.g., monomers, cross-linkers, and additives) and manufacturing conditions is vast, and predictive knowledge for how combinations of these molecular components translate to bulk thermoset properties is lacking. Data science could overcome these problems, but computational methods are difficult to apply to multicomponent, amorphous, statistical copolymer materials for which little data exist. Here, leveraging a data set with 101 examples, we introduce a closed-loop experimental, machine learning (ML), and virtual screening strategy to enable predictions of the glass transition temperature (Tg) of polydicyclopentadiene (pDCPD) thermosets containing cleavable bifunctional silyl ether (BSE) comonomers and/or cross-linkers with varied compositions and loadings. Molecular features and formulation variables are used as model inputs, and uncertainty is quantified through model ensembling, which together with heavy regularization helps to avoid overfitting and ultimately achieves predictions within <15 °C for thermosets with compositionally diverse BSEs. This work offers a path to predicting the properties of thermosets based on their molecular building blocks, which may accelerate the discovery of promising plastics, rubbers, and composites with improved functionality and controlled deconstructability.

This paper examines discrimination in the NFL draft. The NFL is a favorable empirical setting to examine the role of skin color because franchise selectors are required to make rank-order judgements of players based on noisy signals of future productivity. Since wages are tightly related to the rank-order of the draft for the first four years of a player’s career, even if discrimination plays only a marginal role in selection, there could be a large discriminatory impact. We observe racial differences in drafting. However, much of the variation is explained by Black and White players selecting into different playing positions. Conditional upon a large set of control variables, including athletic performance at a marque selection event (the NFL combine), we do not find robust evidence of racial discrimination in NFL drafting between 2000 and 2018. However, we do find some evidence that Black players are disadvantaged relative to White players in later rounds of the draft.

Expanded helicenes are an emerging class of helical nanocarbons composed of alternating linear and angularly fused rings, which give rise to an internal cavity and a large diameter. The latter is expected to impart exceptional chiroptical properties, but low enantiomerization free energy barriers (ΔG‡e) have largely precluded experimental interrogation of this prediction. Here, we report the syntheses of expanded helicenes containing 15, 19, and 23 rings on the inner helical circuit, using two iterations of an Ir-catalyzed, site-selective [2 + 2 + 2] reaction. This series of compounds displays a linear relationship between the number of rings and ΔG‡e. The expanded [23]-helicene, which is 7 rings longer than any known single carbohelicene and among the longest known all-carbon ladder oligomers, exhibits a ΔG‡ethat is high enough (29.2 ± 0.1 kcal/mol at 100 °C in o-DCB) to halt enantiomerization at ambient temperature. This enabled the isolation of enantiopure samples displaying circular dichroism dissymmetry factors of ±0.056 at 428 nm, which are ≥1.7× larger than values for previously reported classical and expanded helicenes. Computational investigations suggest that this improved performance is the result of both the increased diameter and length of the [23]-helicene, providing guiding design principles for high dissymmetry molecular materials.

BackgroundPalliative care knowledge is essential in primary healthcare due to the increasing number of patients who require attention in the final stage of their life. Health professionals (physicians and nurses) need to acquire specific knowledge and abilities to provide high-quality palliative care. The development of education programmes in palliative care is necessary. The Palliative Care Knowledge Test (PCKT) is a questionnaire that evaluates the basic knowledge about palliative care, but it has not been adapted into Spanish, and its effectiveness and utility for Spanish culture have not been analysed.ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to report the translation into Spanish and a psychometric analysis of the PCKT.MethodsThe questionnaire survey was validated with a group of 561 physicians and nurses. The PCKT Spanish Version (PCKT-SV) was obtained from a process, including translation, back translation and revision by experts and a pilot study. The content validity and reliability of the questionnaire were analysed.ResultsThe results showed internal consistency and reliability indexes similar to those obtained by the original version of PCKT.ConclusionThe PCKT-SV is a useful instrument for measuring Spanish-speaking physician and nurse knowledge of palliative care, and it is suitable to evaluate the effectiveness of training activities in palliative care.

Ventricular paced rhythm is thought to obscure the electrocardiographic diagnosis of acute coronary occlusion myocardial infarction. Our primary aim was to compare the sensitivity of the modified Sgarbossa criteria (MSC) to that of the original Sgarbossa criteria for the diagnosis of occlusion myocardial infarction in patients with ventricular paced rhythm.

We report the one-pot synthesis of a chabazite (CHA)/erionite (ERI)-type zeolite intergrowth structure characterized by adjustable extents of intergrowth enrichment and Si/Al molar ratios. This method utilizes readily synthesizable 6-azaspiro[5.6]dodecan-6-ium as the exclusive organic structure-directing agent (OSDA) within a potassium-dominant environment. High-throughput simulations were used to accurately determine the templating energy and molecular shape, facilitating the selection of an optimally biselective OSDA from among thousands of prospective candidates. The coexistence of the crystal phases, forming a distinct structure comprising disk-like CHA regions bridged by ERI-rich pillars, was corroborated via rigorous powder X-ray diffraction and integrated differential-phase contrast scanning transmission electron microscopy (iDPC S/TEM) analyses. iDPC S/TEM imaging further revealed the presence of single offretite layers dispersed within the ERI phase. The ratio of crystal phases between CHA and ERI in this type of intergrowth could be varied systematically by changing both the OSDA/Si and K/Si ratios. Two intergrown zeolite samples with different Si/Al molar ratios were tested for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOxwith NH3, showing competitive catalytic performance and hydrothermal stability compared to that of the industry-standard commercial NH3-SCR catalyst, Cu-SSZ-13, prevalent in automotive applications. Collectively, this work underscores the potential of our approach for the synthesis and optimization of adjustable intergrown zeolite structures, offering competitive alternatives for key industrial processes.

Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) have the potential to improve lithium-ion batteries by enhancing safety and enabling higher energy densities. However, SPEs suffer from significantly lower ionic conductivity than liquid and solid ceramic electrolytes, limiting their adoption in functional batteries. To facilitate more rapid discovery of high ionic conductivity SPEs, we developed a chemistry-informed machine learning model that accurately predicts ionic conductivity of SPEs. The model was trained on SPE ionic conductivity data from hundreds of experimental publications. Our chemistry-informed model encodes the Arrhenius equation, which describes temperature activated processes, into the readout layer of a state-of-the-art message passing neural network and has significantly improved accuracy over models that do not encode temperature dependence. Chemically informed readout layers are compatible with deep learning for other property prediction tasks and are especially useful where limited training data are available. Using the trained model, ionic conductivity values were predicted for several thousand candidate SPE formulations, allowing us to identify promising candidate SPEs. We also generated predictions for several different anions in poly(ethylene oxide) and poly(trimethylene carbonate), demonstrating the utility of our model in identifying descriptors for SPE ionic conductivity.

The unavailability of effective and safe human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) vaccines incites several approaches for development of the efficient antigen/adjuvant vaccination composite. In this study, three different dendronized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs 13–15) were investigated for a complexation ability with gp160 synthetic peptides derived from an HIV envelope. It has been shown that HIV peptides interacted with nanoparticles as evident from the changes in their secondary structures, restricted the mobility of the attached fluorescence dye, and enhanced peptide helicity confirmed by the fluorescence polarization and circular dichroism results. Transmission electron microscopy visualized complexes as cloud-like structures with attached nanoparticles. AuNP 13–15 nanoparticles bind negatively charged peptides depending on the number of functional groups; the fastest saturation and peptide retardation were observed for the most dendronized nanoparticle as indicated from dynamic light scattering, laser Doppler velocimetry, and agarose gel electrophoresis experiments. Dendronized gold nanoparticles can be considered one of the potential HIV peptide-based vaccination platforms.

The authors examine the association between unionization and non-standard work in terms of coverage and wages. They use data from the master files of Canada’s Labour Force Survey (LFS) between 1997–98 and 2013–14 to define and measure non-standard work and to provide a continuum of vulnerability across work arrangements. The estimated probability of being employed in some form of non-permanent job increased 2.9 percentage points from 1997 to 2014. During that same period, the estimated probability of being in a non-full-time, non-permanent job—another way of capturing non-standard work—increased 2.5 percentage points. Although estimated union wage premiums declined rather precipitously for all groups, the union wage advantage remained highest among non-standard workers. Further, the authors find the union wage premium is largest for the most vulnerable of non-standard workers. In terms of estimates that look across the earnings distribution, the union wage premium among non-standard workers is larger for workers higher up the earnings profile.

Patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) have different options to replace the function of their failing kidneys. The “integrated care” model considers treatment pathways rather than individual renal replacement therapy (RRT) techniques. In such a paradigm, the optimal strategy to plan and enact transitions between the different modalities is very relevant, but so far, only limited data on transitions have been published. Perspectives of patients, care-givers, and health professionals on the process of transitioning are even less well documented. Available literature suggests that poor coordination causes significant morbidity and mortality.This review briefly provides the background, development, and scope of the INTErnational Group Research Assessing Transition Effects in Dialysis (INTEGRATED) initiative. We summarize the literature on the transition between different RRT modalities.Further, we present an international research plan to quantify the epidemiology and to assess the qualitative aspects of transition between different modalities.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to take a serious look at the relationship between joint consultation systems at the workplace and employee satisfaction, while at the same time accounting for the (possible) interactions with similar union and management-led high commitment strategies. Design/methodology/approach: Using new, rich data on a representative sample of British workers, the authors identify workplace institutions that are positively associated with employee perceptions of work and relations with management, what in combination the authors call a measure of the “good workplace.” In particular, the authors focus on non-union employee representation at the workplace, in the form of joint consultative committees (JCCs), and the potential moderating effects of union representation and high-involvement human resource (HIHR) practices. Findings: The authors’ findings suggest a re-evaluation of the role that JCCs play in the subjective well-being of workers even after controlling for unions and progressive HR policies. There is no evidence in the authors’ estimates of negative interaction effects (i.e. that unions or HIHR negatively influence the functioning of JCCs with respect to employee satisfaction) or substitution (i.e. that unions or HIHR are substitutes for JCCs when it comes to improving self-reported worker well-being). If anything, there is a significant and positive three-way moderating effect when JCCs are interacted with union representation and high-involvement management. Originality/value: This is the first time – to the authors’ knowledge – that comprehensive measures of subjective employee well-being are being estimated with respect to the presence of a JCC at the workplace, while controlling for workplace institutions (e.g. union representation and human resource policies) that are themselves designed to involve and communicate with workers.

Cu-exchanged zeolites rely on mobile solvated Cu+cations for their catalytic activity, but the role of the framework composition in transport is not fully understood. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations can provide quantitative atomistic insight but are too computationally expensive to explore large length and time scales or diverse compositions. We report a machine-learning interatomic potential that accurately reproduces ab initio results and effectively generalizes to allow multinanosecond simulations of large supercells and diverse chemical compositions. Biased and unbiased simulations of [Cu(NH3)2]+mobility show that aluminum pairing in eight-membered rings accelerates local hopping and demonstrate that increased NH3concentration enhances long-range diffusion. The probability of finding two [Cu(NH3)2]+complexes in the same cage, which is key for SCR-NOx reaction, increases with Cu content and Al content but does not correlate with the long-range mobility of Cu+. Supporting experimental evidence was obtained from reactivity tests of Cu-CHA catalysts with a controlled chemical composition.

Background Criteria for how to assess removal rate of inorganic phosphorous (iP) in peritoneal dialysis (PD) and whether iP removal differs between different PD modalities are debated.Methods In a cross-sectional study, 73 prevalent patients on continuous ambulatory PD (n = 16), continuous cyclic PD (n = 8) or automated PD (n = 49) with mean age 54 (range, 18–87) years, 46 males, underwent standard peritoneal equilibration test (PET) and 24-hour collection of dialysate with measurements of iP, urea and creatinine in all samples and bags. There were 11 slow, 53 average, and 9 fast transporters.Results D/P ratios for iP and creatinine at 4 h of PET were strongly correlated (ρ = 0.86, p<0.0001). Allocation of patients into slow, average and fast transporters according to D/P ratios for iP and creatinine was essentially similar. Whereas the weekly peritoneal clearance of iP (30.8 ± 16.6 L/wk) was lower than that of creatinine (38.4 ± 14.9 L/wk), clearances were strongly correlated (ρ = 0.89, p<0.0001). The correlation between peritoneal weekly clearance of iP and urea KT/V was however weak (ρ = 0.56, p<0.0001. CAPD patients had higher iP clearance than APD patients, 43.2 ± 14.9 versus 24.7 ± 13.4 L/wk (p<0.05); however, serum iP concentrations did not differ.Conclusions Creatinine is a good surrogate marker for phosphate removal, both as assessed by PET and by 24 hours' clearance, in different PD modalities. Therefore, a separate PET scale for phosphate may not be needed. iP removal was greater with CAPD than APD but serum phosphate levels did not differ.

Deficiency of S6 kinase (S6K) extends the lifespan of multiple species, but the underlying mechanisms are unclear. To discover potential effectors of S6K-mediated longevity, we performed a proteomics analysis of long-lived rsks-1/S6K C. elegansmutants compared to wild-type animals. We identified the arginine kinase ARGK-1 as the most significantly enriched protein in rsks-1/S6K mutants. ARGK-1 is an ortholog of mammalian creatine kinase, which maintains cellular ATP levels. We found that argk-1is possibly a selective effector of rsks-1/S6K-mediated longevity and that overexpression of ARGK-1 extends C. eleganslifespan, in part by activating the energy sensor AAK-2/AMPK. argk-1is also required for the reduced body size and increased stress resistance observed in rsks-1/S6K mutants. Finally, creatine kinase levels are increased in the brains of S6K1knockout mice. Our study identifies ARGK-1 as a longevity effector in C. eleganswith reduced RSKS-1/S6K levels.

In 2008, 563,294,000 people were living in Latin America (LA), of which 6.6% were older than 65. The region is going through a fast demographic and epidemiologic transition process, in the context of an improvement in socio-economic indices. The Latin American Dialysis and Renal Transplant Registry has collected data since 1991, through an annual survey completed by 20 affiliated National Societies. Renal replacement treatment (RRT) prevalence and incidence showed an increase year by year. The prevalence rate (in all modalities) correlated with the World Bank country classification by income and the epidemiologic transition stage the countries were experiencing. RRT prevalence and kidney transplantation rates correlated significantly with gross national income (GNI), health expenditure in constant dollars (HeExp), % older than 65, life expectancy at birth, and % of the population living in urban settings. Kidney transplantation increased also, year by year, with more than 50% of transplants performed using kidneys from deceased donors. Double transplants were performed in six countries. RRT prevalence and incidence increased in LA, and are associated with indexes reflecting higher and more evenly distributed national wealth (GNI and HeExp), and the stage of demographic and epidemiological transition.

The biomass production of Cymbopogon citratus shoots cultivated in bioreactors according to the temporary immersion (TIS) principle was assessed under different growth conditions. The effect of gassing with CO2-enriched air, reduced immersion frequency, vessel size and culture time on total phenolic and flavonoid content and free radical scavenging effect of the methanolic extracts was measured. From the TIS-culture of C. citratus, seven compounds were isolated and identified as caffeic acid (1), chlorogenic acid (2), neochlorogenic acid (3), p-hydroxybenzoic acid (4), p-hydroxybenzoic acid 3-O-β-d-glucoside (5), glutamic acid (6) and luteolin 6-C-fucopyranoside (7). The occurrence of compounds 1-7 and their variability in C. citratus grown under different TIS conditions was determined by HPLC. The free radical scavenging effect of the methanolic extract and compounds was measured by the discoloration of the free radical 1,1- diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). The main metabolites in 6- and 8-week-old cultures, both in 5 and 10 l vessels, were chlorogenic acid (2) (100D113 mg%) and neochlorogenic acid (3) (80 - 119 mg%), while in the cultures with CO2-enriched air and reduced immersion frequency the main compound detected in the extracts was glutamic acid (6) (400 and 670 mg% for the green and white biomass and 619 and 630 mg% for the green and white biomass, respectively). The most active compounds, as free radical scavengers, in the DPPH discoloration assay were caffeic acid (1), chlorogenic acid (2), neochlorogenic acid (3) and the flavonoid luteolin 6-C-fucopyranoside (7).

Novel amine‐ or ammonium‐terminated carbosilane dendrimers of type nG‐[Si{OCH2(C6H3)‐3,5‐(OCH2CH2NMe2)2}]x, nG‐[Si{O(CH2)2N(Me)(CH2)2NMe2}]xand nG‐[Si{(CH2)3NH2}]xor nG‐[Si{OCH2(C6H3)‐3,5‐(OCH2CH2NMe3+I−)2}]x, nG‐[Si{O(CH2)2N(Me)(CH2)2NMe3+I−}]x, and nG‐[Si{(CH2)3NH3+Cl−}]xhave been synthesized and characterized up to the third generation by two strategies: 1) alcoholysis of SiCl bonds with amino alcohols and subsequent quaternization with MeI, and 2) hydrosilylation of allylamine with SiH bonds of the dendritic systems and subsequent quaternization with HCl. Quaternized carbosilane dendrimers are soluble in water, although degradation is apparent due to hydrolysis of SiO bonds. However, dendrimers containing SiC bonds are water‐stable. The biocompatibility of the second‐generation dendrimers in primary cell cultures of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and erythrocytes have been analyzed, and they show good toxicity profiles over extended periods. In addition, we describe a study on the interactions between the different carbosilane dendrimers and DNA oligodeoxynucleotides (ODNs) and plasmids along with a comparative analysis of their toxicity. They can form complexes with DNA ODNs and plasmids at biocompatible doses via electrostatic interaction. Also a preliminary transfection assay has been accomplished. These results demonstrate that the new ammonium‐terminated carbosilane dendrimers are good base molecules to be considered for biomedical applications.

We report experimental measurement of radiation characteristics of fused quartz containing bubbles over the spectral region from 1.67 to 3.5 µm. The radiation characteristics were retrieved by an inverse method that minimizes the quadratic difference between the measured and the calculated spectral bidirectional transmittance and reflectance for different sample thicknesses. The theoretical spectral transmittances and reflectances were computed by solving the one-dimensional radiative transfer equation by the discrete-ordinates method for a nonemitting, homogeneous, and scattering medium. The results of the inversion were shown to be independent of the sample thickness for samples thicker than 3 mm and clearly demonstrate that bubbles have an effect on the radiation characteristics of fused quartz.

The design and fabrication of protein biochips requires characterization of blocking agents that minimize nonspecific binding of proteins or organisms. Nonspecific adsorption of Escherichia coli, Listeria innocua, and Listeria monocytogenes is prevented by bovine serum albumin (BSA) or biotinylated BSA adsorbed on SiO2 surfaces of a biochip that had been modified with a C18 coating. Biotinylated BSA forms a protein-based surface that in turn binds streptavidin. Because streptavidin has multiple binding sites for biotin, it in turn anchors other biotinylated proteins, including antibodies. Hence, biotinylated BSA simultaneously serves as a blocking agent and a foundation for binding an interfacing protein, avidin or streptavidin, which in turns anchors biotinylated antibody. In our case, the antibody is C11E9, an IgG-type antibody that binds Listeria spp. Nonspecific adsorption of another bacterium, Escherichia coli, is also minimized due to the blocking action of the BSA. The blocking characteristics of BSA adsorbed on C18-derivatized SiO2 surfaces for construction of a protein biochip for electronic detection of pathogenic organisms is investigated. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A quantum-mechanical model of the amplifying two-coupler ring resonator based on the continuous-modes theory of quantum optics is used to show certain noise resonances of the output fields.

A practical slide agglutination test, with commercial antisera (Difco) and live antigens (antigens of live bacteria) taken directly from 24-h antimicrobial susceptibility plates, has been established for serotyping Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Until recently, the lack of both a standard antigenic scheme and a source of commercial antisera has made serological typing of this organism impractical. A simplified procedure with 17 unabsorbed antisera and live antigens prepared from materials readily available in most clinical microbiology laboratories makes epidemiological typing of this organism possible in hospital laboratories. The distribution of each serotype examined in this study was determined by using 425 consecutive patient isolates from six different hospitals. The distribution of O antigen groups (live antigen) was as follows: O1, 11.5%; O2, 1.6%; O3, 3.8%; O4, 7.8%; O5, 4.2% O6, 27.1%; O7,8, 5.9%; O9, 6.8%; O10, 2.4%; O11, 8.2%; O12 through O17, each less than 1%. Ten and six-tenths percent of the above agglutinated in two antisera, 3.3% agglutinated in more than two antisera, and 5.2% did not agglutinate in any antisera. A comparison of live and heated antigens shows that 93.2% were typable with the live antigen, and 94.5% were typable with the heated antigen. When both antigens were used, we typed 96.3% of 725 isolates. The reproductibility and specificity of the serological procedure were examined. We recommend using the live antigen for routine serological typing in clinical microbiology laboratories for “in house” epidemiology and reserving the heated antigen for reference and research typing (and for those few cases where results cannot be obtained using the live antigen). The application of serotyping in the study of outbreaks of P. aeruginosais also presented.
