The development of smart cities has been positively impacted by advances in Internet of Things (IoT) technology. In addition, new levels of service have emerged due to the demands of new types of applications, whereby these new service levels must be managed by priorities depending on the technological requirements of each service in order to efficiently route information from an origin IoT device to a base station. However, the current global energy crisis demands more awareness from technology systems in terms of energy consumption efficiency, reduction of carbon footprint, and sustainability. In this sense, we propose a mathematical optimization model capable of routing different services in an IoT network, considering different levels of priority in the services offered, while simultaneously reducing energy consumption in the network for services with priority. In other words, the proposal aims to extend the lifetime of IoT networks in critical energy urban infrastructure, ensuring the highest possible quality in the services offered on the network. Mapping the terrain surrounding concentrations of documented Manteño (ca. a.d. 650–1700) stone architecture within 1.2 km² of the cloud forests of Bola de Oro in southern Manabí, Ecuador using an Uncrewed Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-based lidar Mobile Mapping System (MMS) revealed a modified landscape of agricultural systems. The resulting Digital Terrain Models (DTMs), subsequent ground-truthing, and excavation show a modified Manteño landscape of agricultural terraces, drainage channels, and water retention ponds tailored to the storage and distribution of water brought by seasonal rains and by marine layers precipitating at these higher elevations. Such a massive human investment in this challenging landscape was most likely a result of the Chongón-Colonche Mountains being the most resistant environments to the extreme climate changes brought by El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) during the climatic shifts of the Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA, ca. a.d. 950–1250) and the Little Ice Age (LIA, ca. a.d. 1400–1700). The identification of biomarkers for the early diagnosis of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is urgently needed. Here, we aimed to identify NAFLD biomarkers in the early stages of steatosis (SS) and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) based on differential gene expression from bioinformatics data. A meta-analysis was performed from transcriptomic databases retrieved from public repositories containing data from biopsies of patients at various stages of NAFLD development. The status of the selected molecules was validated in the serum of patients with NAFLD by ELISA. : We identified 121 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) associated with SS and 402 associated with NASH. Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment revealed that the altered genes were primarily associated with dysfunction of primary cellular processes, and pathway analyses were mainly related to cholesterol metabolism. We identified ACSS2, PCSK9, and CYP7A1 as candidate biomarkers for SS and ANGPTL3, CD36, CYP51A1, FASN, FAS, FDFT1, and LSS as candidate biomarkers for NASH. By experimental validation of bioinformatics data from patients with NAFLD, we identified promising biomarkers for detecting SS and NASH that might be useful for screening and diagnosing early NAFLD stages in humans. On 6 February 2023, a devastating earthquake doublet consisting of MW 7.8 and 7.6 events separated by about 9 hr struck the southeastern part of Türkiye. The developing aftershock sequence contained thousands of events during the first few days and overwhelmed the routine algorithms handling their detection and location. In addition, several stations temporarily lost real-time contact and came online again later. At the same time the Omori decay of the aftershock event rate reduced the event frequency and allowed for inclusion of progressively smaller-magnitude events with time. One possibility to help deal with such a complex situation is the use of machine learning (ML) methods to generate earthquake catalogs with a substantially higher number of events. Here, we present high-resolution earthquake catalogs derived with two ML association methods for the first five days of the aftershock sequence of this doublet. In terms of the number of reliably located events, the event catalog created from PhaseNet picks and the GENIE phase association method outperforms both the routine regional catalog and the second ML-derived catalog obtained from the GaMMA phase association method. Although both GaMMA and GENIE catalogs detect about 6 times more events than the routine catalog, GENIE associates on average about double the phases to a single event than GaMMA, which results in better constrained event locations. The spatiotemporal evolution of the event rates is sensitive to changes in the network geometry due to variable station availability. During the first few days, no decay of the event rate in the enhanced catalog is observed due to the inclusion of progressively smaller-magnitude events with time and increased station availability. This study indicates that ML-derived earthquake catalogs for challenging time periods like the early aftershock sequences of large earthquakes have the potential to significantly improve routine event catalogs. Social responsibility is a commitment that companies assume to improve the welfare of the society in which they operate. In this document, an analysis is made based on documentary sources of public and private organizations regarding social responsibility in occupational safety and health involved in the construction of bridges and access roads in large cities in Ecuador. Occupational safety and health are a crucial issue in the construction industry, and it is important that companies are committed to ensuring a safe and healthy work environment for their employees. Social responsibility in this context implies that companies must take proactive measures to prevent accidents and occupational illnesses and ensure that their employees have access to the necessary medical care. In Ecuador, the construction of bridges and access roads in large cities is an important activity that involves both public and private companies. It is essential that companies assume their social responsibility and act together to ensure that construction safety and health standards are met. Companies realize that success does not depend solely on profits, but that it is also necessary to contribute to the well-being of all those involved in them in order to make them more competitive. To achieve this, companies must undertake corporate social responsibility (CSR) actions. However, some companies that claim to be socially responsible are not completely so. In the construction sector, the work is one of the most exposed to suffer occupational accidents. In 2018, the Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security reported that 3.3% of occupational accidents in Ecuadorian industry were generated in the construction sector. It is important that companies assume their social responsibility in occupational safety and health, and work together to ensure that occupational risk prevention standards are met. The results show that Corporate Social Responsibility is closely related to sustainable development; currently in Ecuador there are reforms, where priority is given to social and environmental commitment, where companies seek to be socially responsible, generating more resources, but at the same time raising awareness of the care and preservation of the environment and the welfare of their employees. The application of herbicides is one of the leading causes of the decline of amphibians in the world. Atrazine is widely used to control herbaceous weeds in crops. In Mexico, it is not regulated and widely applied. More information regarding the effects of atrazine in aquatic systems and on amphibians in this country is therefore needed. Amphibians have a smooth skin coated with excretions that protect them from harmful environmental influences, yet still facilitates the exchange of gases, ions, and thermoregulation, but is especially susceptible to absorbing toxic substances, including atrazine. A few studies have revealed that atrazine modifies the thickness of the epithelial layer in fish, but there are few studies to that effect in frogs. No studies have investigated whether atrazine exposure affects mucopolysaccharides or glucans, which are essential for hydrating the skin. We hypothesized and found confirmed that the herbicide atrazine reduces the thickness of the dorsal epithelium and promotes a greater presence of mucopolysaccharides in the dorsal epithelium and glands in Lithobates spectabilis. Our findings suggest that this frog is likely more vulnerable to dehydration, ultraviolet radiation, and will suffer impaired wound healing when exposed to atrazine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

INTRODUCTION: Blood biomarkers have proven useful in Alzheimer's disease (AD) research. However, little is known about their biological variation (BV), which improves the interpretation of individual‐level data. METHODS: We measured plasma amyloid beta (Aβ42, Aβ40), phosphorylated tau (p‐tau181, p‐tau217, p‐tau231), glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), and neurofilament light chain (NfL) in plasma samples collected weekly over 10 weeks from 20 participants aged 40 to 60 years from the European Biological Variation Study. We estimated within‐ (CVI) and between‐subject (CVG) BV, analytical variation, and reference change values (RCV). RESULTS: Biomarkers presented considerable variability in CVI and CVG. Aβ42/Aβ40 had the lowest CVI (≈ 3%) and p‐tau181 the highest (≈ 16%), while others ranged from 6% to 10%. Most RCVs ranged from 20% to 30% (decrease) and 25% to 40% (increase). DISCUSSION: BV estimates for AD plasma biomarkers can potentially refine their clinical and research interpretation. RCVs might be useful for detecting significant changes between serial measurements when monitoring early disease progression or interventions. Highlights: Plasma amyloid beta (Aβ42/Aβ40) presents the lowest between‐ and within‐subject biological variation, but also changes the least in Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients versus controls.Plasma phosphorylated tau variants significantly vary in their within‐subject biological variation, but their substantial fold‐changes in AD likely limits the impact of their variability.Plasma neurofilament light chain and glial fibrillary acidic protein demonstrate high between‐subject variation, the impact of which will depend on clinical context.Reference change values can potentially be useful in monitoring early disease progression and the safety/efficacy of interventions on an individual level.Serial sampling revealed that unexpectedly high values in heathy individuals can be observed, which urges caution when interpreting AD plasma biomarkers based on a single test result.
