This paper makes visible austerity-based infant food exchange as a contemporary food acquisition practice outside of commercial and regulated foodscapes. It presents results from a netnography conducted within two popular online platforms in Canada between April 2017 and February 2018: the Kijiji classified advertising site, and Facebook. Qualitative analysis of over 2000 user generated secondhand exchange ads show practices from selling, trading, sharing, and seeking whereby infant foods works as a form of currency to acquire either economic capital when sold, an alternative food capital when traded, or are gifts in the moral economy of exchange. While infant food exchange is often collaborative in nature, it is austerity-driven involving different forms of capital parents have or seek to accomplish the responsibility of feeding. As excluded consumers, posters are motivated by a complex mixture of desperation, innovation, ecological concerns, and morality to care for others when mainstream food access is out of reach within the current political and economic system. The Kazakh anthroponymicon during its centuries-old history did not experience serious pressure from religious and state institutions and therefore is characterized by a high degree of non-formalization. It has preserved the ancient traditions of naming, which are based on cultural and gender stereotypes: firstly, the preference for the birth of a male baby; and secondly, the birth of a boy child that is considered as a gift of higher sacred powers. This article explores a group of male anthroponyms formed as a result of the addition of substantive forms and the verbs tuu 'to be born', kelu 'to come', and beru 'to give'. They retain syntactic relations that go back to the original sentence: propositional semantics and actant models. Complex two-part anthroponyms belong to polypropositive structures; the primary proposition for all of them is the proposition 'A child was born'. Further, depending on the semantics and valency of the verbal component, there are situations of a reward, a birth time with different actants. In the surface structure of the anthroponym, depending on the relevance for those who give the name, in addition to the predicate, actants of various types are verbalized, such as agent, patient, and donor. In addition to the dictum content, the considered names include modal meanings: an evaluative mode, intention, which are expressed implicitly. Abstract: We examined grit in the context of a wealth-building situation: tax refund savings. Specifically, we leveraged a novel dataset combining longitudinal survey data with administrative tax data for a sample of 6,904 low- and moderate-income (LMI) tax filers in the United States. After statistically balancing individuals on grit across a range of important characteristics with propensity score weighting, we found that grit was associated with better financial behaviors. Additionally, the influence of grit on savings-related behaviors did not vary across the experience of financial stressors. Lastly, we found that individuals exhibiting higher levels of grit prioritized education spending over gifts, confirming the notion that people exhibiting higher levels of grit are determined and passionate as they pursue their long-term goals. Nikephoros Phokas' defeat of the Islamic Emirate of Crete in 961 AD is one of the most renowned examples of Reconquista celebrated by ancient authors and dealt with by modern historians. Transcending its historical and contextual framework, both in the past as in the present, this case of Reconquista has often come to take on further symbolic meanings, as a paradigm of an ideological and political confrontation between the worlds of Christianity and Islam. The aim of this article is to reassess the significance of this episode, with specific regard to how it relates to the preceding period of the Emirate, questioning the extent to which it can be regarded as the prodigious event of liberation of the island celebrated by textual sources and modern folklore as an archetype of the 19th-century patriotic struggle against the Ottornan occupation of the island. This article challenges the traditional understanding of the role of landownership in rural Punjab in the context of recent socio-economic restructuring of Pakistani society. Based on extensive ethnographic fieldwork of contemporary practices of gift exchange (vartan bhanji) in a village, we argue that the Kammi biraderis, once considered lower class, now assert their elevated socio-economic status through vartan bhanji on important social occasions like marriages. Zamindars now see themselves in competition both with Kammi biraderis and each other for social prestige and superior status, as new claims made by different biraderis challenge traditional hierarchies created through historically structured socio-economic inequalities. During the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s the Warumungu carver Nat Warano, better known as Tracker Nat, produced drawings and painted carvings as gifts and for exchange in the town of Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory. His art practice was a part of his role as a leader of the Warumungu community, as he played a role in moving the community from a reserve outside the township to Warrabri to the south. His gifting of carvings was part of a history and tradition of ngijinkirri among Warumungu people, in which gifts brought the recipient into a state of obligation to the giver. Ngijinkirri put teachers and politicians into this state of obligation, as Nat gifted painted carvings to them. Since the rediscovery of Nat, and of the history and style of his art, his carvings have been identified in both public and private collections. Since beginning the research on Nat, the authors of this article have attributed drawings and painted carvings in public collections and passing through commercial auctions, and it is anticipated that there are many more yet to be identified. Using the research tools of phenomenological anthropology, semiotics, and everyday practices, this article presents an analytical look at a special group of gifts found in today's everyday practices that share a common context: gifts or goods sent or otherwise delivered by friends and family living abroad. Different meanings, and identifiable and changing relationships are explored in the analysis of various non-structured interviews about personal gift-giving experiences among residents of the United States, South Korea, France and their relatives iii Lithuania. The study reveals how gifts both reflect and affect people's interpersonal relationships, how these experiences are enacted, remembered, and take on meaning. These individual traditions of gift-giving testify to deeper layers of a worldview that determines old and new identities, shared sensations, tastes, and feelings, even mark relationship as generosity (or the lack of it). Moreover, through the gift, as a non-verbal form of communication, people can express and understand multiple layers of meaning - without words or reflections, but through experiential knowledge, known in phenomenology as lived experience. Using the tools of phenomenological anthropology and the means of research into everyday practices, the article discusses contemporary gift-giving practices, focusing on the special cases of gift giving, revealed through the narratives of respondents who were interviewed for the research conducted in Lithuania -- a country on the borders of Western, Eastern, and Northern Europe. The analyzed special cases are self-gifts -- the ones purchased by the respondents and originally called "a gift to myself" by them, whereas they emphasize that it was not an ordinary purchase but certainly a gift. This phenomenon is analyzed through a deeper insight into three cases: excerpts of qualitative unstructured interviews conducted for the research and a description of the author's personal experience. In this article, they are presented along with the comments of the author as is characteristic of the phenomenological research. The analysis seeks to reveal how the experiences with self-gifts occur, acquire meaning and place in memory, and how this affects a person's relationship with themselves and those around them. Although the self-gifting practice sounds like a paradox, it exists in the language and everyday practices, so this analysis aims to look for a deeper message encoded behind the words of individual stories. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic across the agri-food sector was significant and pervasive, challenging farmers' resilience through multiple disruptions to the supply chain. To support forward planning in face to future shocks, this research examines the perceived impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic by farmers themselves, providing insights from the UK. Using a nation-wide online survey carried out during two distinct waves of the pandemic in 2021, the study reveals changing perceptions and the relationship between preparedness and perceived impacts. Results indicate that perceptions of both the severity of the COVID-19 impacts and preparedness for such impacts in the future, were scaled down as the pandemic evolved. Findings suggest that a farmer feeling more prepared in the present to withstand shocks is positively influenced by them perceiving the impact of COVID-19's in their business as severe. This effect is reinforced for farmers that felt more prepared to withstand COVID-19's impacts when the pandemic unfolded, as well as for those that perceive the impact of COVID-19 as long-term. Farmers in our sample appear to have adapted to the shocks to their businesses through supply-side interventions, focusing on having higher flexibility in delivery of products and diversifying their supply networks. Doing so requires them to absorb an increase in both fixed and variable costs, which can end-up been transferred to the consumer. Government support moving forward should focus on strengthening and, perhaps, re-imagining the whole supply industry and re-defining the role of farmers as more than food producers, but also as stewards of climate and food resilience. Through an ethnographic approach, this article takes a contemporary look at Orthodox image production and, in particular, at how the terms "traditional" and "modern" are employed by Ethiopian image producers. The unrelenting insistence on what makes an image "correct" and "traditional" signals a deeper need for legitimacy. The discourse presented in this article attributes to past tradition a value which is just as much a critique of the present as it is an idealization of the past. The panorama of Ethiopian Orthodox image practices is not only riddled with tensions surrounding titles, hierarchy and purity, but colored by nostalgia, showing growing concern about the decline of Orthodoxy. The New London Maritime Society received a donation of an anonymous 156-page whaling journal in August 2020. This was significant because the society had very few whaling logs or journals in its collection. The journal, titled "The Journal of the Merrimac," documents two whaling voyages that set out from New London in 1844 and 1852. The society decided to display the journal, but due to its fragility, they photographed and transcribed it. The transcription project involved over 80 volunteers who worked from photographs of the pages. The journal provides insights into the whaling industry and the experiences of sailors aboard the Merrimac, including details of daily life, observations of events, and interpersonal disputes. Through research, it was discovered that the author of the journal was Frederick Olney, a New London whaler of color. The journal also sheds light on the history of free African Americans in Southeastern Connecticut.
