Aim: Our previous study proposed a technique of inserting gauze coated with oxytetracycline–hydrocortisone ointment into the extraction socket that suppressed the occurrence of dry socket and post‐extraction pain compared with the gauze‐free group. In this study, we estimated the incidence of dry socket and post‐extraction infection in patients with ointment gauze insertion and identified predictors of post‐extraction pain and change in maximum opening volume. Methods: This retrospective study was carried out on patients who underwent lower third molar extraction in the Department of Oral Surgery at a general hospital in Japan. Results: The incidence of dry socket and infection after tooth extraction was 1.05% and 0.35%. The mean visual analog scale (VAS) on the operative day was 4.15; the VAS for postoperative day (POD)1 and POD7 were 2.28 and 0.55, respectively. The percentage change in maximum mouth opening on POD1 was −9.88%, and that on POD7 was −1.51%. Multivariable analysis indicated that age and Winter position classification were predictors of POD1 VAS, and female sex, smoking, and Winter position classification were predictors of POD7 VAS. Winter position classification and preoperative maximum mouth opening, respectively, were identified as predictors of maximum mouth opening percent change on POD1 and POD7. Conclusions: The insertion of gauze coated with oxytetracycline–hydrocortisone ointment into the extraction socket of the mandibular third molar showed a low incidence of dry socket and post‐extraction infection. Moreover, the Winter position classification was suggested to be an independent predictor of postoperative pain and the maximum mouth opening percent change. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: In this study, particulate cancellous bone marrow was harvested from the tibia for alveolar bone grafting, and postoperative complications at the donor site were compared between patients aged 10 years or older (29 tibias) and those aged younger than 10 years (42 tibias).Patients and Methods: Enrolled patients were those who underwent tibial bone graft harvesting at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Aichi Gakuin University, during a period of 3 years and 1 month from March 2012 through March 2015. We examined clinical findings at the time of harvesting and changes in symptoms during hospital admission in study 1. Follow-up examinations and survey questionnaires on symptoms also were investigated to clarify medium- to long-term postoperative outcomes in study 2.Results: In both age groups, medium- to long-term postoperative findings showed no apparent adverse events, except for acceptable levels of scar tissue. Clinical findings on harvesting and early postoperative findings showed that intraoperative blood loss, early postoperative pain, and gait disorders were similar between the group aged younger than 10 years and the group aged 10 years or older. However, the latter group needed a considerably longer time for ambulation and weight-bearing pain to disappear and for every movement in daily activities to return to normal. Regarding patients with a bilateral alveolar cleft, we found no significant difference between the first and second harvesting in the factors affecting postoperative morbidity.Conclusions: Our findings suggest that tibial bone graft harvesting is safe and requires a shorter recovery period even in patients aged between 8 and 10 years. Purpose This study evaluated patients who have passed 3 years or more after fixed prosthesis and have undergone two-stage sinus lift procedure with tibia bone. The aim of this study was to evaluate the transplanted bone by clinical aspects and panoramic radiographs. Materials and methods Twelve patients and 30 implants were evaluated. The average age of the patients was 55.6 ± 8.0 years. Patients were treated with the same surgical procedure by one surgeon. Panoramic radiographs were taken at the time the patients had fixed prosthesis, and 1, 2, and 3 years later accordingly. The radiographs were saved as DICOM data and reconstructed into two-dimensional images using 3D image analysis software in order to measure the distance between the elevated maxillary sinus floor and the apical of the implant body. Results The amount of the resorption of the transplanted bone was 3.1 ± 1.6 mm 3 years after implant replacement. Statistical difference was observed in bone resorption in cases of the back site of the zygomaticoalveolar line, when the preoperative maxillary ridge bone was less than 4 mm, among smokers and with complications of sinus membrane perforation. Survival and success rates of the implants were 100%. Conclusion Maxillary sinus elevation procedure with tibia bone was a predictable treatment method for implant rehabilitation.
