While electronic medical records are a proven advancement in medical care their diffusion in developing countries lags far behind much of the world. The authors review requirements for development of an electronic medical record system for a rural Haitian medical clinic. Analysis is given to proprietary versus open source software along with hardware typology, implementation challenges and training.
