The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society has received funding from the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation for a project called "Who Was Mrs. John B. Smith: Reparative Authority Work on Women's Names in PHS Digital Collections." This project aims to properly credit and make discoverable approximately 150 women who played important roles in the history of PHS and horticulture in the United States during the 19th and 20th centuries. The project will update PHS records and contribute authorized names to the Library of Congress/Name Authority File. A LibGuide on researching women's names will also be produced. The project will be carried out by PHS archivist Penny Baker with assistance from Janet Evans. In der vorliegenden Arbeit zu psychiatrischen und psychosomatischen Tageskliniken in Österreich wurde einerseits die Gesamtsituation österreichischer Tageskliniken erfasst und andererseits psychiatrische und psychosomatische Tageskliniken voneinander unterschieden. Zu diesem Zweck wurde ein Fragebogen entwickelt und an alle psychiatrischen und psychosomatischen Tageskliniken in Österreich gesendet. In einem ersten Teil wurden mit geschlossenen Fragen die Bereiche Rahmenbedingungen, Funktion und Aufgabe, therapeutische Paradigmen, Indikation und Kontraindikation, Diagnostik, Organisation, interdisziplinäre Zusammenarbeit und das Angebot an den Tageskliniken erfasst und ausgewertet. In einem zweiten Teil wurden mit offenen Fragen Wirkfaktoren, Schwierigkeiten, Besonderheiten und Zukunftswünsche tagesklinischer Behandlung erfasst und ausgewertet. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass es einen Trend zu mehr Tageskliniken gibt. Im Vergleich zu psychiatrischen Tageskliniken sind psychosomatische Tageskliniken ein noch neues Phänomen. Die Unterscheidung zwischen psychiatrischen und psychosomatischen Tageskliniken ist wichtig, um Patienten zukünftig unterscheidbare Behandlungsoptionen bieten zu können. Es zeigt sich, dass psychiatrische und psychosomatische Tageskliniken einen starken psychotherapeutischen Schwerpunkt haben und die Wirkfaktoren der Psychotherapie nach Grawe erfüllen. This paper on psychiatric and psychosomatic day hospitals in Austria first looks at the overall situation of Austrian day clinics then, in a second step, compares psychiatric and psychosomatic day hospitals. For this purpose, a questionnaire was developed and sent to all psychiatric and psychosomatic day hospitals in Austria. The first part consisted of closed questions and was used to gather and evaluate the categories: general conditions for treatment in day hospitals, tasks of day hospitals, therapeutic paradigms, indication and contraindication, diagnostics, day hospital organisation, interdisciplinary cooperation and the offering in day hospitals. The second section consisted of open questions which were used to gather and evaluate active factors, difficulties, specifics and requests for future treatment in day hospitals. The results show that there is a trend towards more day hospitals. Psychosomatic day hospitals are a rather new phenomenon. Furthermore, the distinction between psychiatric and psychosomatic day hospitals is important in order to offer patients distinguishable treatment options in future. The results show that psychiatric and psychosomatic day hospitals both have a strong focus on psychotherapy and both fulfill the active factors for psychotherapy by Grawe.

The article discusses using picturebooks to develop students' art appreciation as well as literacy skills. The author supports more art in school curricula and notes the benefits to young students creating and responding to art. She states that picturebooks teach students how to view art, articulate responses, and appeal to aesthetic impulses. Particular focus is given to the books "Tell Me a Picture" by Quentin Blake, "Katie's Picture Show" by James Mayhew, and the painting "Family" by Fernando Botero.

This section offers news briefs on the Council on Botanical and Horticultural Libraries. A number of botanical illustrations are owned by the New York Botanical Garden. Bernadette Callery, of the Carnegie Museum of Natural History Library, has been appointed as a Visiting Assistant Professor at the School of Information Sciences of the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. An annotated bibliography on urban greening has been created by information services librarian Elena Sisti.

The article presents an update on members of the Council of Botanical and Horticultural Libraries (CBHL). CBHL will will work with the Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts to develop and write a long-range Preservation Plan for the McLean Library to cover activities through 2012. Elena Sisti was appointed as an information services librarian of CBHL. Anna Vani has been hired as a Digital Projects Cataloger of the Missouri Botanical Garden.

This paper reports on a qualitative research project undertaken with Y6 children. It draws on transcriptions of children's discussions; recordings of collaborative writing sessions; and the children's responses to a series of questions relating to Beanie soft toys, their origins, their intended market audience and their creator's entrepreneurial intentions in relation to the global market. The paper considers how far the children were motivated by working with popular icons as a purpose for collaborative writing. It also analyses children's stated views on the manufacturers who make, advertise and sell these types of popular toys and explores children's relationship to the consumerist ideology which surrounds popular culture.

This article looks at why talk is important for young children learning mathematics, how talk fosters mathematical understanding and the importance of having something to talk about by relating maths to real situations. It then looks at the revealing comments of some four and five year old children talking about simple number activities linked to a favourite rhyming story song they had been singing.

This article reports the results of the third year of the BIODOC service at Cranfield University, which confirm the conclusions arising from the previous two years of the service. MRL mice homozygous for the recessive 1pr gene develop an accelerated autoimmune syndrome and massive lymphadenopathy. Because the function of the expanded lymph node population is unclear, we have studied the subunits of the T cell receptor for antigen (TcR). DNA and RNA were prepared from MRL/Mp-1pr/1pr (1pr) and congenic MRL/Mp- +/+ (+/+) mice by standard techniques and studied by Southern blot, northern blot, and dot blot analysis using the cDNAs TT11, specific for the TcR α chain; 86T5, specific for the TcR β chain; and T3δ; specific for the subunit of the T3 molecule. Surface protein was immunoprecipitated with antisera 8177, which recognizes TcR framework determinants, and resolved by diagonal SDS-PAGE. FACS analysis was performed with a monoclonal antibody to murine T3, and with the KJ16-133 and F23.1 monoclonal antibodies, which recognize determinants encoded by the Vβ8 subfamily of β chain variable region genes.When compared with +/+ controls, surface TcR density as detected by immunofluorescence using all three antibodies was significantly diminished on 1pr spleen and lymph node cells, as well as on 1pr lymph node cells which had been depleted of L3T4+ and Ly2+ cells by negative selection. There appeared, however, to be selective expression of the genes encoding the epitopes binding F23.1. Southern blot analysis of DNA showed polyclonal rearrangements of the TcR β chain genes. There were increased α, β, and T3δ RNA transcripts in the double negative lymph node cells. The paradoxical decrease in TcR surface expression in the setting of large quantities of full length transcript is yet to be explained.

Early pregnancy-associated thrombocytopenia has been described previously in the peripheral blood of in vitro fertilization (IVF) patients and is evaluated here in 26 women undergoing gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT). No consistent fall in platelets was seen in ongoing pregnancies. It is suggested that a fall in peripheral blood platelets in the early luteal phase may be observed only in pregnancies where more than one embryo is present.

Free radicals produce a broad spectrum of damages to DNA, a major proportion of which includes ring fragmentation and contraction products of DNA bases as well as abasic sites. In this study, the mutagenic potential of two pyrimidine ring fragmentation products, urea and β-ureidoisobutyric acid (UBA), was analyzed using the i^-d region of the Escherichia coli lacI gene contained in a single-stranded f1-K12 phage hybrid vector. Single-stranded DNA was used so that the in vivo interactions between the damage and the DNA polymerase could be assessed in the absence of excision repair. The i^-d region contains 20 mutable thymine sites so that 20 separate sequence contexts containing a unique lesion at a position of thymine can be analyzed simultaneously. Urea and UBA residues were uniquely introduced into f1-K12 DNA by chemical and enzymatic methods and primer extension and piperidine analysis of the damage-containing template molecules demonstrated that the potential mutable thymine sites contained randomly distributed lesions. Both fragmentation products were poorly bypassed by DNA polymerases in vitro and in the cell; although in the presence of SOS-induction, UBA was bypassed more efficiently than urea. UBA was a potent premutagenic lesion with a rate of mutation induction more than sixfold above that observed with abasic sites derived from purines. Urea residues were about as mutagenic as abasic sites derived from purines, which in turn were more mutagenic than abasic sites derived from thymine. Mutations derived from urea, UBA and abasic sites were all dependent on SOS-induction of the host cells. Since both urea and UBA were derived from DNA thymine, these data demonstrate that adenine is not routinely inserted opposite products that no longer retain the structural integrity of the pyrimidine ring. Sequence analysis showed that the mutations were targeted at thymine with 62% of the urea-derived mutations being T to C transitions and 62% of the UBA derived mutations being T to A transversions. Thus, the two fragmentation products appeared to direct specific misinsertions. The mutations were not randomly distributed over the i^-d region for either fragmentation product and hotspots were observed for both damages. The presence of hotspots suggests that in addition to lesion structure, sequence context plays an important role in base selectivity by DNA polymerases opposite DNA lesions. Energy minimization calculations were used to model the urea and UBA lesions at two contrasting hotspot sites. Abstract:  A prospective, randomized, double-blind, multicenter study in cancer patients receiving myelosuppressive chemotherapy was undertaken to evaluate and compare the tolerability of sargramostim (yeast-derived recombinant human granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor, RhuGM-CSF) and filgrastim (bacteria-derived recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, RhuG-CSF) in the prophylaxis or treatment of chemotherapy-induced neutropenia. In all, 137 evaluable patients received sargramostim (300 μg; 193 mg/m2) or filgrastim (481 mg; 7 mg/kg) once daily by self-administered s.c. injection, usually beginning within 48 h after completion of chemotherapy. With the exception of a slightly higher incidence of grade 1 fever (/38.1  C) with sargramostim, there were no statistically significant differences in the incidence or severity of local or systemic adverse events possibly related to the growth factors. Although the study was not designed to evaluate efficacy directly, there also were no statistically significant differences between treatment groups in total days of growth factor therapy, days of hospitalization, or days of i.v. antibiotic therapy during the treatment period. Both sargramostim and filgrastim were comparably well tolerated when given by s.c. injection in this group of patients, and no clinically significant differences between the growth factors were demonstrated.
