Abstract

In 1997 the Sun and the Earth passed through the equatorial plane of Jupiter and therefore through the orbital planes of its main satellites. During this period, mutual eclipses and occultations occurred and were observed. We investigate the precision of the catalogue to produce improved data for the development of dynamical models. Light curves of mutual eclipses and occultations were recorded by the observers of the international campaign PHEMU97 organized by the Institut de Mécanique Céleste, Paris, France.
We made 275 observations of 148 mutual events from 42 sites. For each observation, information is given about the telescope, the receiver, the site and the observational conditions. This paper gathers together the data and gives a first estimate of the precision. The catalogue of these rare events represents a collection of improved accurate astrometric data useful for the development of dynamical models.

Abstract

High-resolution radio measurements of air showers—cascades of secondary particles in the atmosphere initiated by cosmic rays—reveal that cosmic rays with energies of 1017–1017.5electronvolts have a mixed composition, with light elements (protons and helium nuclei) making up 80 per cent of their mass.

4. Attenuation of Methyl tert-Butyl Ether in Water Using Sunlight and a Photocatalyst

Abstract

The use of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) as a gasoline additive has resulted in increasing pollution of groundwater. Most of the conventional treatment technologies are inefficient or costly when the initial concentration of MTBE is low (< 200 µg/L). To find an ecology friendly and inexpensive method for MTBE remediation, we used solar radiation with titanium dioxide (TiO2) as a photocatalyst. For synthetic samples, almost complete degradation (99+%) of MTBE was observed at the end of 5-hour test run with 0.05 g/L of slurry TiO2. Intermediate products detected were tertiary butyl formate, tertiary butyl alcohol, and trace amounts of acetone. Studies conducted using contaminated groundwater samples with TiO2and sunlight showed that aromatic organic species benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) were degraded up to a factor of 10 times faster than MTBE. However, dissolved metals (Fe2+) and chloride ions in contaminated waters decreased the photo-activity of TiO2for the degradation of MTBE. Reducing the pH of the groundwater samples increased the MTBE degradation rate threefold. Photocatalysis accelerates the solar degradation of MTBE and reduces its half-life by more than 3 orders of magnitude. The study indicated that solar degradation is a low-cost and effective alternative to attenuate MTBE in drinking water supplies.

6. Selective Oxidation in Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Using Clean Oxidants

Abstract

We have systematically investigated heterogeneous catalytic oxidation of different substrates in supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2). Three types of catalysts, a metal complex {cis-[Fe(dmp)2(H2O)2] (CF3SO3)2} (dmp = 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline), 0.5% platinum γ-alumina, and 0.5% palladium γ-alumina, were used at a pressure of 200 bar, at temperatures from 60 to 150 °C, and for 3−18 h for partial oxidation of organic substrates. The metal−oxo catalyst used gave as high as 3.9% conversion of cycloxene to its oxides and epoxides, with the major products being the ketone and alcohol. The oxidation of cyclohexene strongly depended on the concentration of oxygen, whereas length of reaction (3−18 h) and temperature (60−150 °C) were shown to be less significant on the conversion and selectivity of the reaction. Oxidation of cyclohexene over Pd and Pt/Al2O3 catalysts resulted in a mixture of dehydrogenation and oxygenated products.

11. Neutral and acidic human tracheobronchial mucin

Abstract

Human bronchial mucin from a patient suffering from chronic bronchitis was solubilized in aqueous solution containing sodium azide and protease inhibitors and purified by Sepharose 4B and 2B column chromatography. The mucin was further purified by cesium bromide density gradient centrifugation. Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel (7.5%) electrophoresis of this material showed high-molecular-weight mucin component(s) at the top of the gel. Chemical analysis of this preparation indicated a typical mucin profile of amino acids and carbohydrates. Ion-exchange chromatography resulted in resolution of the purified mucin into neutral and acidic fractions. Comparison of the chemical composition of these two fractions showed higher mole percentage of threonine, serine, sialic acid, and sulfate in the acidic fraction. Chemical deglycosylation of the purified mucin preparation with trifluoromethane sulfonic acid was carried out at 20°C for 3 1/2 h. Sialic acid, fucose, galactose, and W-acetylglucosamine were completely removed, whereas traces ofN- acetylgalactosamine were still detected. High-pressure liquid chromatography of the deglycosylated products from native, neutral, and acidic mucin preparations resulted in a principal peptide, P1, with identical amino acid composition. Cyanogen bromide (CNBr) treatment of the peptide P1 from neutral and acidic mucins and subsequent fractionation of the fragments by high-pressure liquid chromatography resulted in similar peptide profiles. The P1 peptide fraction was further subjected to high-pressure liquid chromatography in a second solvent system, which resulted in two peaks, P1a and P1b. Gel filtration of both peptides in 6 M guanidine hydrochloride indicated a single peak with molecular weight of approximately 97 kDa. The amino acid profile of the two peptides was dominated by high levels of threonine, serine, and proline, which combined accounted for nearly 39% of the total residues, and in most respects, the profile resembled that of native mucin. End-group analysis of the peptide P1a indicated a blocked N-terminus, whereas serine was found to be the N-terminal amino acid in the peptide P1b. Rabbit antibodies prepared against the peptide P1 from native tracheal mucin reacted strongly with neutral and acidic mucin as well as the mucin from human colon. Both neutral and acidic human tracheal mucins were immunologically reactive with mouse monoclonal antibody HMPFG-2, which was prepared against human mammary mucin. However, the response of this antibody to human colonic mucin was rather weak.

Abstract

It has long been recognized that a treatment for β hemoglobin chain anomalies could result if a way to reverse the Hb F to Hb A switch in humans were found. Studies of hemoglobin switching have been hampered by the fact that small animals normally used in the laboratory do not have a true Hb F. However, several small animal models which take advantage of a switch in minor β chain proportions in certain strains of inbred mice and rats have been proposed and used. The use of these models has suffered from what, until now, could be considered technically demanding, time-consuming methodologies. In this study we report an effective, rapid and technically streamlined model of hemoglobin switching utilizing Fisher 344 rats and high performance liquid chromatography with a weakly cationic column.

14. Steroid 5α-Reductase Activity in the Harderian Glands of Male and Female Syrian Hamster (Mesocricetus auratus)

Abstract

The activity of the enzyme steroid 5α-reductase in Harderian glands of adult syrian hamsters was assessed by measuring the conversion of testosterone (T) to 5αdibydrotestosterone (DHT). The optimal conditions for this reaction were determined in vitro using whole gland homogenates and [3H]testosterone as substrate. Enzyme activity was maximal at pH 5.5. The Michaelis-Menten constant of the Harderian enzyme for T was 4.6 ± 1.2 × 10-6 M in females and 4.2 ± 0.39 × 10-6 M in males, estimated by Eadie-Hofstee plots. On the basis of relative maximum velocity values, there was 9 or 10 times more 5α-reductase in females (2.8 ± 0.67 nmol/mg protein/hr) than in males (0.289 ± 0.029 nmol/mg protein/hr). Consistently, glands of intact male hamsters had lower 5α-reductase activities than those of females. Castration of males significantly increased the enzymatic activity, which within 4 weeks reached female-like values. The levels of 5α-reductase mRNA also increased with castration. There was a direct correlation between activity and mRNA levels of the enzyme in castrated male glands. Further, the administration of T or DHT to ovariectomized hamsters led to intact male values in the enzymatic activity of the gland. The sex differences in 5α-reductase activity may be of relevance to the differential regulation exerted by androgen upon the physiology of male and female glands. The results are consistent with the view that 5α-dihydrotestosterone is the active androgen in the Harderian gland. Copyright 1994, 1999 Academic Press

Abstract

The effect of sulindac, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, on renal prostaglandin synthesis and renal function variables was investigated in six cirrhotic patients with tense ascites and marked sodium retention. We studied serum thromboxane (TXB2) production, urinary prostaglandin excretion (6-keto-prostaglandin F1 a and TXB2) and renal function before and after administration of a therapeutic dose of sulindac (400 mg). After treatment, no significant changes were observed in urinary prostaglandin excretion, serum creatinine concentration, urine volume, or urinary sodium and creatinine clearance, whereas the serum TXB2 concentration was reduced in 89%. In five patients systemic prostaglandins were inhibited, but renal excretion remained unchallenged. However, one patient showed marked reduction of urinary prostaglandins associated with a depression of renal function. The study suggests that sulindac could be a safe substitute for other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in cirrhotic patients with ascites. Further pharmacological trials seem to be warranted.

Abstract

Abstract: Twenty-eight patients with genital and perianal necrotizing infections are described. The patients were divided into three groups according to the primary site of infection: group 1, anorectal (14 patients); group 2, urologic (ten patients), and group 3, idiopathic (four patients). The overall mortality was 25 percent, 28.5 percent for the anorectal group and 10 percent for the urologic group, although this difference is not statistically significant. Necrotizing infections of anorectal origin were more severe and had a less typical way of presentation, with subsequent delay in diagnosis and a higher rate of myonecrosis. As a consequence, more debridements and more fecal derivations had to be performed. The etiologic agents were the same among the three groups and comprised a number of anaerobes (Bacteroides spp, gram-positive cocci) as well as aerobes (microorganisms belonging to theEnterobacteriaceae andS. faecalis). Necrotizing fasciitis was the pathologic picture of nine of ten patients with Fournier's gangrene of urogenital origin and seven of 14 with an anorectal source. Synergistic necrotizing cellulitis was identified in half of those secondary to anorectal origin and only one of those with a urologic source.

Abstract

Humoral and microenvironmental influences have played a major role in recent research into reversing the Hb F to Hb A switch. Early research in this area focused on hormonal influences and showed both thyroid hormone and prolactin could induce small but statistically significant reversals in hemoglobin phenotype. Recent research has focused on the effect of certain lipids in this process. The current study shows a synergy between thyroid hormone and prolactin in inducing a significant switch in adult rat hemoglobin patterns toward the neonatal pattern. Further, it is hypothesized that this synergy is due to the horjmones' effect on lipid intermediaries whose effect in turn are proposed to be mediated by the cAMP and phosphatidylinositol second messenger systems.

Abstract

Breakthrough Listenis the most comprehensive and sensitive search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) to date, employing a collection of international observational facilities including both radio and optical telescopes. During the first three years of the Listenprogram, thousands of targets have been observed with the Green Bank Telescope (GBT), Parkes Telescope and Automated Planet Finder. At GBT and Parkes, observations have been performed ranging from 700 MHz to 26 GHz, with raw data volumes averaging over 1 PB day?1. A pseudo-real time software spectroscopy suite is used to produce multi-resolution spectrograms amounting to approximately 400 GB h?1GHz?1beam?1. For certain targets, raw baseband voltage data is also preserved. Observations with the Automated Planet Finder produce both two-dimensional and one-dimensional high-resolution (R? 105) echelle spectral data. Although the primary purpose of Listendata acquisition is for SETI, a range of secondary science has also been performed with these data, including studies of fast radio bursts. Other current and potential research topics include spectral line studies, searches for certain kinds of dark matter, probes of interstellar scattering, pulsar searches, radio transient searches and investigations of stellar activity. Listendata are also being used in the development of algorithms, including machine-learning approaches to modulation scheme classification and outlier detection, that have wide applicability not just for astronomical research but for a broad range of science and engineering. In this paper, we describe the hardware and software pipeline used for collection, reduction, archival, and public dissemination of Listendata. We describe the data formats and tools, and present Breakthrough Listen Data Release 1.0 (BLDR 1.0), a defined set of publicly available raw and reduced data totaling 1 PB.

Abstract

We describe familial multiple symmetric lipomatosis in a pedigree harboring the 8344 mutation in the tRNALysgene of mitochondrial DNA(mtDNA). The proband showed neuromuscular involvement but lacked the typical manifestations of myoclonic epilepsy and ragged-red fibers disease. The distribution of the mutation was unusual because the proportion of mutated genomes was higher in blood and lipomas than in muscle tissue.

Abstract

Boyajian's Star (KIC 8462852) has received significant attention, due to its unusual periodic brightness fluctuations detected by the Keplerspacecraft and subsequent ground-based observations. Possible explanations for the dips in the photometric measurements include interstellar or circumstellar dust, and it has been speculated that an artificial megastructure could be responsible. We analyze 177 high-resolution spectra of Boyajian's Star in an effort to detect potential laser signals from extraterrestrial civilizations. The spectra were obtained by the Lick Observatory's Automated Planet Finder (APF) telescope as part of the Breakthrough Listen Project, and cover the wavelength range of visible light from 374 to 970 nm. We calculate that the APF would be capable of detecting lasers of power greater than approximately 24 MW at the distance of Boyajian's Star, d = 1470 ly. The top candidates from the analysis can all be explained as either cosmic-ray hits, stellar emission lines or atmospheric airglow emission lines.

26. The Breakthrough Listen Search for Intelligent Life: No Evidence of Claimed Periodic Spectral Modulations in High-resolution Optical Spectra of Nearby Stars

Abstract

We report on high-resolution spectra obtained by the Automated Planet Finder and high-resolution optical Levy Spectrometer to search for periodic spectral modulations, such as those reported in Borra & Trottier. In their analysis of 2.5 million spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, Borra & Trottier report periodic spectral modulations in 234 stars, and suggest that these signals may be evidence of extraterrestrial civilizations. To evaluate this claim, we observed three of the 234 stars with the Automated Planet Finder Telescope and Levy Spectrometer including all stars brighter than a visual magnitude of 14. Fourier analysis of the resultant spectra of these three sources does not reveal any periodic spectral modulations at the reported period, nor at any other period.

Abstract

The Breakthrough Listen Initiative is undertaking a comprehensive search for radio and optical signatures from extraterrestrial civilizations. An integral component of the project is the design and implementation of wide-bandwidth data recorder and signal processing systems. The capabilities of these systems, particularly at radio frequencies, directly determine survey speed; further, given a fixed observing time and spectral coverage, they determine sensitivity as well. Here, we detail the Breakthrough Listen wide-bandwidth data recording system deployed at the 100 m aperture Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope. The system digitizes up to 6 GHz of bandwidth at 8 bits for both polarizations, storing the resultant 24 GB s?1of data to disk. This system is among the highest data rate baseband recording systems in use in radio astronomy. A future system expansion will double recording capacity, to achieve a total Nyquist bandwidth of 12 GHz in two polarizations. In this paper, we present details of the system architecture, along with salient configuration and disk-write optimizations used to achieve high-throughput data capture on commodity compute servers and consumer-class hard disk drives.

Abstract

We present the target selection for the Breakthrough Listensearch for extraterrestrial intelligence during the first year of observations at the Green Bank Telescope, Parkes Telescope, and Automated Planet Finder. On the way to observing 1,000,000 nearby stars in search of technological signals, we present three main sets of objects we plan to observe in addition to a smaller sample of exotica. We chose the 60 nearest stars, all within 5.1 pc from the Sun. Such nearby stars offer the potential to observe faint radio signals from transmitters that have a power similar to those on Earth. We add a list of 1649 stars drawn from the Hipparcoscatalog that span the Hertzprung-Russell diagram, including all spectral types along the main sequence, subgiants, and giant stars. This sample offers diversity and inclusion of all stellar types, but with thoughtful limits and due attention to main sequence stars. Our targets also include 123 nearby galaxies composed of a "morphological-type-complete" sample of the nearest spirals, ellipticals, dwarf spherioidals, and irregulars. While their great distances hamper the detection of technological electromagnetic radiation, galaxies offer the opportunity to observe billions of stars simultaneously and to sample the bright end of the technological luminosity function. We will also use the Green Bank and Parkes telescopes to survey the plane and central bulge of the Milky Way. Finally, the complete target list includes several classes of exotica, including white dwarfs, brown dwarfs, black holes, neutron stars, and asteroids in our solar system.

Abstract

LP-BM5 murine leukemia virus infection caused alterations in splenic T cell subsets in adult C57BL/6 female mice. Prolonged infection resulted in increased immunosuppression and a con-comitant decreased resistance to Cryptosporidium parvum infection. Significant Cryptosporidium colonization of the intestinal villi was seen 10 days after oral challenge in mice infected with murine retrovirus for 3 months but not in non-virally infected controls. Parasite numbers per villus of retrovirally infected mice were 20-fold higher than in controls, which showed only occasional parasites. Feces from most virally infected mice but none from controls contained oocysts. Cryptosporidium infection in mice after 4 and 5 months of retroviral infection was accompanied by severe immunosuppression and parasite levels 50–5000 times higher than in controls. A high level of infection persisted 21 days after Cryptosporidium challenge in virally infected mice, while controls cleared their transient and marginal infection. These results further characterize LP-BM5 infection as a murine model of retrovirally induced acquired immune deficiency.
