AbstractFast packet scheduling is a key feature of packet-based data services which are 3G/4G wireless networks such as Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution, High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA), and High Data Rate. In this paper, we propose Anticipated Proportionally Optimal (APO), a new packet scheduling scheme with Quality of Service (QoS) support for hybrid of real and non-real-time services over HSDPA networks. The APO scheduling algorithm is based on the effective channel anticipation model. In contrast to the traditional schemes, the proposed method is implemented based on a cyclic non-work-conserving discipline. Simulation results indicate capability of proposed scheme to maximize the channel usage efficiency compared to other exist scheduling methods. Results also present fair tradeoff between channel capacity and desired QoS for real-time services.

This paper presents the unified user equipment (UE) baseband modulation and demodulation (modem) hardware platform architecture to support multiple radio access technologies. In particular, this platform selectively supports two systems; one is HEDGE system, which is the combination of third generation partnership project (3GPP) Release 7 high speed packet access evolution (HSPA+) and global system for mobile communication (GSM)/general packet radio service (GPRS)/enhanced data rates for GSM evolution (EDGE), while the other is LEDGE system, which is the combination of 3GPP Release 8 long term evolution (LTE) and GSM/GPRS/EDGE. This is done by applying the flexible pin multiplexing scheme to a hardwired pin mapping process. On the other hand, to provide stable connection, high portability, and high debugging ability, the stacking structure is employed. Here, a layered board architecture grouped by functional classifications is applied instead of the conventional one flatten board. Based on this proposed configuration, we provide a framework for the verification step in wireless cellular communications. Also, modem function/scenario test and inter-operability test with various base station equipments are verified by system requirements and scenarios.

This paper studies the user-perceived performance of a shared packet wireless network for interactive data applications such as Web-browsing. We have defined a new measure: the Equivalent Circuit Rate (ECR) for a user in a shared access network is the dedicated access circuit rate that would be required by the user in order to have an equivalent user experience. The ECR measure is intuitive, useful and robust. We present a simple analytical model based on a closed queueing network with a finite population of interactive data users whose traffic can be modeled as ON/OFF traffic with feedback. The analytical results are consistent with our detailed simulations, where we study TCP-based Web traffic simulations for an EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution) TDMA system using realistic workload models. Our study incorporates constant bit-rate channels, variable bit-rate channels, as well as mixed user groups with different channel conditions. We show that a shared wireless network is well characterized by simple parameters that depend only on mean statistics, for a broad range of scenarios. ECR is well approximated by R×(1−U), where Uis the utilization and Ris the effective shared channel rate; this result holds even if different user groups have different rates or the channel rates are variable. These results will be useful in network dimensioning, admission control, and for defining quality of service targets for different user groups.

The time variant environment in fast channels severely impacts on the performances of classical equalization techniques. A method is proposed here to circumvent this problem, particularly in the severe channel with fast behaviour. To improve the Bit Error Rate (BER) at the receiver, a new approach is proposed for the channel impulse response (CIR) estimation in the Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE)cellular system. The computation of the CIR h(t) (finite impulse response filter) is performed by using the Least Squares algorithm. Then, a statistical estimation of the CIR is achieved to update the coefficients of the equalizer filter. Computer simulation results show that statistical estimation (CIR re-estimation) provides significant improvement with 250 km/h vehiclespeed (RA250): the bit error rate (BER) is 20% lowered for data bits far from the middle of the burst.

Standardization is currently in progress to specify Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE). The two components of EDGE, Enhanced Circuit‐Switched Data (ECSD) and Enhanced General Packet Radio Service (EGPRS), define enhancements for circuit‐mode and packet‐mode data, respectively. EGPRS is also intended to provide a high‐rate North American digital time division multiple access (TDMA) packet data service. To achieve higher data rates, 8‐ary phase shift keying (8‐PSK) modulation has been introduced. Enhanced radio link control (RLC) procedures are being defined based on link adaptation and incremental redundancy to achieve superior delay/throughput performance over a wide range of operating conditions. This paper describes a candidate proposal for (RLC) block segmentation for EGPRS that provides combined link adaptation and incremental redundancy; short, fixed‐length blocks to achieve lower block error rates; seamless transition between coding schemes without loss in throughput; segmentation to provide a robust Gaussian minimum shift keying (GMSK) fallback mode; and short and extended header formats. We present performance tradeoffs for the proposed scheme. Many of the features of this proposal have been included in the EGPRS specification. We provide a brief description of the block and header formats being standardized.

This article focuses on the emergence of wide area network standards that feature broadband speed and cellular phone convenience. General packet radio service overlays a packet-based air interface on existing circuit-switched global system for mobile communication (GSM) networks. It offers real-world bandwidth of about 20 kbps when moving data from the network to the device, with somewhat less bandwidth available for the uplink. Enhanced data rates for GSM evolution (EDGE) networks offer a relatively inexpensive upgrade for GSM operators because they require no additional spectrum. The maximum speed available on an EDGE network depends on network and device; actual speed also depends on signal strength.

An equalisation concept for the novel radio access scheme enhanced data rates for GSM evolution (EDGE) is proposed, by which high performance can be obtained at moderate computational complexity. Because high-level modulation is employed in EDGE, optimum equalisation as performed in most GSM receivers is too complex, and suboptimum schemes have to be considered. It is shown that delayed decision-feedback sequence estimation (DDFSE) is a promising candidate. For various channel profiles, approximations for the bit error rate of DDFSE are given and compared with simulation results. It turns out that a discrete-time allpass prefilter creating a minimum-phase overall impulse response is indispensable for obtaining a favourable tradeoff between performance and complexity. Additionally, the influence of the receiver input filter is investigated.

The article reports that telecom service provider Orange PLC last week become the only mobile operator in Great Britain to roll out a nationwide mobile data service based on Enhanced Data-rates for GSM Evolution (Edge) technology, offering business users a way of filling in gaps in current 3G services. Edge will provide roaming staff with 100-200kbit/s connections in the swathes of Britain where faster 3G data coverage is unavailable. Around 70 percent of the British population in cities or alongside major transport routes can receive 3G mobile data services, Orange estimates. Other British operators have rejected the technology, preferring to gradually expand their 3G coverage over the next decade, while supplementing 3G services with static fixed mobile convergence connections.

U.S. telecommunications giant SBC Communications Inc. has unveiled plans to create an integrated wireless LAN hotspot and 3G data service for launch in late 2004 or early 2005. SBC said the initiative will provide users with roaming between its own FreedomLink hotspot network, which is expected to stretch to 6,000 venues and 20,000 access points by 2006, with the EDGE (enhanced data rates for GSM evolution) cellular network currently being deployed by its U.S. mobile operator partner, Cingular Wireless LLC. The two companies are currently working on a way to make roaming between networks seamless, with devices automatically switching to the most appropriate network available.
