Environmental development and water level changes in the south-western part of the Curonian Lagoon are reconstructed based on the results of bottom sediment investigations, including data on lithology, diatoms, pollen, and radiocarbon dating. Three stages have been identified in the ~ 10000-year history of the lagoon's development. The diatoms suggest that in the Early Holocene, the southern part of the Curonian Lagoon was a shallow freshwater basin, mainly fed by run-off from the continent. During the Middle Holocene, the study area was a marshy coastal zone. Due to a change in hydrological conditions at the beginning of the Late Holocene, it became an open-water part of the lagoon. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of dredging activities on the structure of the macrobenthic community of a port complex in São Luís do Maranhão (2°S, Brazil). Sampling was performed on four occasions: pre-dredging, dredging 1 (25% of the material dredged), dredging 2 (75% of the material dredged) and post-dredging. Total mean density was 430.8 ± 55.0 ind/m², with 147.76 ± 280.82 ind/m² at pre-dredging, 161.90 ± 285.67 ind/m² at dredging 1, 53.83 ± 72.15 ind/m² at dredging 2 and 67.29 ± 72.58 ind/m² after dredging, revealing a reduction during dredging 2. The most representative groups were Polychaeta, Oligochaeta, Crustacea and Mollusca. Lumbrineris sp. (Polychaeta) was present in all sampling periods and was the dominant species. Richness and Shannon diversity of the species were higher in the pre-dredging and post-dredging periods, with reductions during the dredging activities (dredging 1 and 2). Principal component analysis revealed a correlation with granulometry and heavy metals in the sediment. The dredging activities led to a reduction in the macrobenthic community. Seagrasses increase sediment complexity by trapping particulates and influencing biogeochemical cycles via root oxygen loss and organic matter exudation. However, their impact on trace metal sequestration is poorly studied. We found significantly higher trace metal concentrations in seagrass sediments compared to adjacent bare sediments, correlating with total organic carbon, iron, and fine sediments. Sequential extractions showed that most trace metals were dominated by recalcitrant fractions (oxidizable and residual fractions), representing phases such as organic matter, iron sulfides, and crystalline iron oxides. Depth-dependent trends in trace metal partitioning were evident. For example, arsenic in the oxidizable fraction only weakly correlated with Fe in surface sediments (r sp = 0.55) but correlated strongly in deeper sediments (r sp = 0.87), consistent with iron sulfides being a dominant host-phase. Marine microplastics (MPs) pollution, with rivers as a major source, leads to MPs accumulation in estuarine sediments, which are also nitrogen cycling hotspots. However, the impact of MPs on nitrogen cycling in estuarine sediments has rarely been documented. In this study, we conducted microcosm experiment to investigate the effects of commonly encountered polyethylene (PE) and polystyrene (PS) MPs, with two MPs concentrations (0.3% and 3% wet sediment weight) based on environmental concentration considerations and dose-response effects, on sediment dissolved oxygen (DO) diffusion capacity and microbial communities using microelectrode system and metagenomic analysis respectively. The results indicated that high concentrations of PE-MPs inhibited DO diffusion during the mid-phase of the experiment, an effect that dissipated in the later stages. Metagenomic analysis revealed that MP treatments reduced the relative abundance of dominant microbial colonies in the sediments. The PCoA results demonstrated that MPs altered the microbial community structure, particularly evident under high concentration PE-MPs treatments. Functional analysis related to the nitrogen cycle suggested that PS-MPs promoted the nitrification, denitrification, and DNRA processes, but inhibited the ANRA process, while PE-MPs had an inhibitory effect on the nitrate reduction process and the ANRA process. Additionally, the high concentration of PE-MPs treatment significantly stimulated the abundance of genus (Bacillus) by 34.1% and genes (lip , pnbA) by 100–187.5% associated with plastic degradation, respectively. Overall, in terms of microbial community structure and the abundance of nitrogen cycling functional genes, PE- and PS- MPs exhibit both similarities and differences in their impact on nitrogen cycling. Our findings highlight the complexity of MP effects on nitrogen cycling in estuarine sediments and high concentrations of PE-MP stimulated plastic-degrading genus and genes. The research, focusing on the analysis of nine trace elements, namely As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn, completely analyzed their quantities in both water and sediment inside the Rabnabad Channel. Samples were collected during the post-monsoon and analyzed by ICP-OES following acid digestion. The mean concentrations of elements in water and sediments are as follows: Fe > Mn > Pb > Cu > Ni > Zn > Cr > As>Cd, and Zn > Fe > Pb > Mn > As>Cu > Cr > Ni > Cd. To understand the state of ecological and human health risk, several indices were incorporated. Health risk assessment revealed that children posed higher risk than adults. PERI, TRI, and I geo indices for water sediment indicate a significant ecological risk. Moreover, Mn and Pb exhibit elevated HPI values and contribute substantially to contamination factors. Correlation and PCA implicate both anthropogenic and geogenic sources, such as agricultural practices, coal-based power plants, and the Payra seaport, in the elevated concentrations of Cd, Cr, Mn, and Fe in both water and sediment samples. Wetlands are widely regarded as biogeochemical hotspots of mercury methylation but little is known regarding such roles of mangrove forests. Here, we examined the detailed depth profile of mercury, methylmercury, and organic matter in surface sediments within an estuarine pond at Mai Po Nature Reserve in Hong Kong, China. There is a progressive enrichment of organic matter in sites closer to mangrove forests, and methylmercury showed a significantly positive correlation with organic matter content (p < 0.001). Methylmercury in sediments is significantly (p < 0.05) higher in the summertime when the temperature is elevated but salinity is reduced. Further, sediments at or near the mangrove forest have lower carbon to nitrogen ratio, which may imply more labile organic matter in these organic-rich sediments that can promote microbial mercury methylation. In summary, mangrove forests can enhance net methylmercury production and increase the risk to the migratory birds overwintering in this internationally important wetland. Steroids, renowned for endocrine-disrupting capabilities, have garnered significant research interest, predominantly centered on their parent forms. This study was the first to explore the composition, spatiotemporal characteristics, sources, mass inventories, and ecological risks of steroids in free and conjugated forms in estuarine sediments. Seventeen steroids were identified in sediments with the total levels of 1.3–4.3 ng/g. Most natural steroids and metabolites existed in free forms, while synthetic ones predominantly stored in conjugates. Environmental factors exerted limited impacts on steroid distribution. Raw domestic wastewater, drug consumption, and mariculture may be leading steroid sources in estuarine sediments, with total mean mass inventories of 177–219 μg/m2. The predominant contributors to the ecological risk were cortisol, prednisolone, 20α-dihydroprogesterone, 20β-dihydroprogesterone, and progesterone. This research gives the first insight into the understanding of conjugated steroids in the marine environment, and advocates for more studies on the fate and ecotoxicology of conjugated steroids. Denitrification, anammox, and DNRA are three important nitrogen (N) reduction pathways in estuarine sediments. Although salinity is an important variables controlling microbial growth and activities, knowledge about the effects of changing salinity on those three processes in estuarine and coastal wetland sediments are not well understood. Herein, we performed a 60-d microcosms experiment with different salinities (0, 5, 15, 25 and 35 ‰) to explore the vital role of salinity in controlling N-loss and N retention in estuarine wetland sediments. The results showed that sediment organic matter, sulfide, and nitrate (NO 3 −) were profoundly decreased with increasing salinity, while sediment ammonium (NH 4 +) and ferrous (Fe2+) varied in reverse patterns. Meanwhile, N-loss and N retention rates and associated gene abundances were differentially inhibited with increasing salinity, while the contributions of denitrification, anammox, and DNRA to total nitrate reduction were apparently unaffected. Moreover, denitrification rate was the most sensitive to salinity, and then followed by DNRA, while anammox was the weakest among these three processes. In other words, anammox bacteria showed a wide range of salinity tolerance, while both denitrification and DNRA reflected a relatively limited dynamic range of it. Our findings could provide insights into temporal interactive effects of salinity on sediment physico-chemical properties, N reduction rates and associated gene abundances. Estuaries, vital coastal ecosystems, face growing threats from industrialization. To understand the pace of sedimentary changes and heavy metal pollution at the anthropogenically altered and industrialized Nakdong River Estuary in South Korea, we used sediment coring to reconstruct environmental change. Estuarine dam construction in 1934 shifted the sedimentary system from sand to mud, coinciding with a post-1930s mercury increase due to coal burning. Mercury concentrations in other South Korean regions surged in the 1970s, indicating proximity to emission sources matters. However, most heavy metal levels (Cu, Cd, Zn, Ag) sharply rose in the 1960s and 1970s with regional industrialization. Modern heavy metal concentrations doubled pre-industrial levels, underscoring human activities as the primary driver of Nakdong Estuary environmental changes. The sediment of five mangrove in Pernambuco/Brazil was investigated to find a reference site for toxicity bioassays. Sediment characteristics, metal levels, and toxic effects on the nauplius of the copepod Tisbe biminiensis were studied. The sediment was composed by terrigenous muds and siliciclastic sands with medium to high organic matter contents. The Fe As association show most of the high concentrations and positive correlation among its constituents in the south. In the north, the Ca-Sr-La association is higher and exhibits positive correlation among its components that usually found in carbonate rocks. Very intense toxic effects were observed, mainly in the south, with >70 % reductions in development. As and Hg were positively correlated with mortality and decrease in development. The sediment quality at studied mangroves prevent their use as a reference site in bioassays. An equilibrium partitioning approach (EqPA) was employed to evaluate the metal toxicity and define sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) for arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), and mercury (Hg) in the cockle cultivated areas located in Bandon Bay, Thailand. An assessment of metal toxicity using the [∑SEM]-[AVS] and [∑SEM]-[AVS]/ f oc models indicated no adverse effect on benthic organisms. The normalized total metal concentrations in this area were below the established SQG values for As, Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, and Hg, namely respectively 21.3, 0.8, 84.6, 36.0, 34.6, 440.9 mg/kg dry weight, and 49.3 μg/kg dry weight on sand and calcium carbonate free with 1 % total organic carbon basis, suggesting low metal toxicity. This study investigates the sedimentation behaviors of microplastics (MPs) within a typical meso-scale river estuary, the Yalu River Estuary (YRE) and its riverine reservoir. It analyzes sediment cores in two habitats of Yalu River, revealing changing MPs abundance over time. Results highlight significant differences in riverine and estuarine MPs deposition. Reservoir sample contains more MPs in fragments. Color variations are notable in estuarine samples but minimal in reservoir sample. After 1980, estuarine cores show an increase in coarser MPs, likely due to growth of aquaculture activities. Although sediment accumulates at 1/10 of the rate in reservoir compared to estuary, MPs in reservoir sediments exceeds estuarine level by over threefold. We report the first empirical confirmation of the co-occurrence of organophosphate esters (OPEs) additives and microplastics (MPs) in benthic compartments from the Loire estuary. Higher median concentrations of MPs (3387 items/kg dw), ∑ 13 tri-OPEs (12.0 ng/g dw) and ∑ 4 di-OPEs (0.7 ng/g dw) were measured in intertidal sediments with predominance of fine particles, and under higher anthropogenic pressures, with a general lack of seasonality. Contrarily, Scrobicularia plana showed up to 4-fold higher ∑tri-OPE concentrations in summer (reaching 37.0 ng/g dw), and similar spatial distribution. Polyethylene predominated in both compartments. Tris(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (TEHP), its degradation metabolite (BEHP) and tris-(2-chloro, 1-methylethyl) phosphate (TCIPP) were the most abundant OPEs in sediments, while TCIPP predominated in S. plana. The biota-sediment accumulation factors suggest bioaccumulation potential for chlorinated-OPEs, with higher exposure in summer. No significant correlations were generally found between OPEs and MPs in sediments suggesting a limited role of MPs as in-situ source of OPEs. The contents of metals, total carbon, total nitrogen (TN), total organic carbon (TOC), and stable isotope composition (δ13C org and δ15N) of sediment organic matter (SOM) were investigated to explore the sources and spatial distribution of metals and SOM in the surface sediments (Kaohsiung Port, Taiwan). Results showed that TOC and metals in estuarine sediments are high, gradually decreasing toward the port entrances. The δ13C org , δ15N, and TOC/TN ratios indicate that SOM comes mainly from terrestrial sources. This study proposes a befitting model between metal pollution and toxicity risk index and SOM sources in port sediments by combining stable isotope composition, correlation matrix, and multiple linear regression analysis. The model indicates that the degree of metal pollution and toxicity risk in sediments are mainly affected by TOC terr content and SOM source. The results help to understand the influence of organic matter sources in port sediments on metal concentration distribution. Mercury (Hg) is a conspicuous and persistent global pollutant. Ionic Hg can be methylated into noxious methylmercury (CH 3 Hg), which biomagnifies in marine tropic webs and poses a health risk to humans and organisms. Sediment Hg methylation rates are variable, and the output flux of created CH 3 Hg are dependent on sediment characteristics and environmental factors. Thus, uncertainties remain about the formation and flux of CH 3 Hg from sediment, and how this could contribute to the bioaccumulative burden for coastal organisms in shallow ecosystems. Cores were collected from 3 estuarine locations along the Eastern USA to examine how sediments characteristics influence the introduction of Hg and CH 3 Hg into the base of the food chain. Stable isotopes of inorganic 200Hg and CH 3 199Hg were injected into sediments of individual cores, with cultured diatoms constrained to overlying waters. Five different treatments were done on duplicate cores, spiked with: (1) no Hg isotopes (control); (2) inorganic 200Hg; (3) CH 3 199Hg; (4) both 200Hg and CH 3 199Hg isotopes, (5) both 200Hg and CH 3 199Hg into overlying waters (not sediment). Experimental cores were incubated for 3 days under temperature and light controlled conditions. These results demonstrate that upper sediments characteristics lead to high variability in Hg cycling. Notably, sediments which contained abundant and peaty organic material (∼28 %LOI), had the highest pore water DOC (3206 μM) and displayed bands of sulfur reducing bacteria yielded the greatest methylation rate (1.97 % day−1) and subsequent diatom uptake of CH 3 200Hg (cell quota 0.18 amol/cell) in the overlying water. Humans rely on the natural environment and benefit from the goods and services provided by natural ecosystems. Quantification and mapping of ecosystem services (ES) is required to better protect valued ES benefits under pressure from anthropogenic activities. The removal of excess nitrogen, a recognized catchment‐derived pollutant, by biota in estuarine soft sediments is an important ES that potentially ameliorates the development of eutrophication symptoms. Here, we quantified estuarine benthic sediment characteristics and denitrification enzyme activity (DEA), a proxy of inorganic N removal, at 109 sites in four estuaries to develop a general ("global") model for predicting DEA. Our initial global model for linking DEA and environmental characteristics had good explanatory power, with sediment mud content having the strongest influence on DEA (60%), followed by sediment organic matter content (≈35%) and sediment chlorophyll a content (≈5%). Predicted and empirically evaluated DEA values in a fifth estuary (Whitford, n = 90 validation sites) were positively correlated (r = 0.77), and the fit and certainty of the model (based on two types of uncertainty measures) increased further after the validation sites were incorporated into it. The model tended to underpredict DEA at the upper end of its range (at the muddier, more organically enriched sites), and the relative roles of the three environmental predictors differed in Whitford relative to the four previously sampled estuaries (reducing the explained deviance relative to the initial global model). Our detailed quantification of DEA and methodological description for producing empirically validated maps, complete with uncertainty information, represents an important first step in the construction of nutrient pollution removal ES maps for use in coastal marine spatial management. Carbazole (CZ) and eight polyhalogenated carbazoles (PHCZs) were quantified by GC–MS in sediments of 12 estuaries, the interface linking large industrial and living areas to the Bohai Sea, China. These pollutants, heavy metals, and environmental factors caused integrated exposure to sediment bacteria. Four PHCZ congeners were detectable, with ΣPHCZs ranging from 0.56 to 15.94 ng/g dw. The dominant congeners were 3,6-dichlorocarbazole (36-CCZ) and 3-chlorocarbazole (3-CCZ), with a mean contribution of 72.6 % and 20.2 %. Significant positive correlations were found between 36-CCZ and both total organic carbon and heavy metals. Redundancy analysis of microbial variation implicated no impacts from PHCZs. Correlation analysis demonstrated an increase in abundance of Rhodocyclaceae but a decrease in Bacteroides-acidifaciens-JCM- 10556 with presence of PHCZs, suggesting that these bacteria can be used as potential contamination indicators. The behavior, and history of lead (Pb) contamination in the ecosystem of the Loire estuary was examined using elemental concentrations and Pb isotope data in water, sediment, bivalves, shrimps, and fish. In the estuary and in the surrounding coastal area, Pb concentrations in water and sediment decreased compared to concentrations determined in the 1980s, with concentrations ranging from 15.8 to 65.7 mg kg−1 in the surface sediment, 0.04–0.26 nM in the water column, and 48.0–77.9 mg kg−1 in suspended particles. Pb biomonitoring using blue mussels collected by the French Mussel Watch Program over the last 40 years showed a concentration decrease from 3.8 to 0.8 mg kg−1. A similar trend is observed in an estuarine sediment core. Changes in accompanying Pb isotope compositions strongly suggest a binary mixing process between Pb derived from terrigenous material and anthropogenic sources. Thus, environmental regulations restricting the release of lead into the environment contribute to a decrease in estuarine levels of this pollutant, which occurs on a decadal time scale. This study provides the first measurement of microplastic abundance and distribution in surface waters and sediments in Tampa Bay, FL. Microplastic concentrations in discrete water samples ranged from 0.25 to 7.0 particles/L with an average of 0.94 (±0.52) particles/L. Samples taken with a 330 μm plankton net had 1.2–18.1 particles/m3 with an average of 4.5 (±2.3) particles/m3. Discrete samples were 200 times higher than net samples, suggesting substantial losses or undersampling with the net. For both discrete and plankton tow samples, there were no significant differences in concentrations between stations or regions. Intense rainfall events in the summer always preceded samples with substantially higher counts. Most (>75%) microplastics were fibers. Using an average value of 1 particle/L, Tampa Bay contains ~4 billion microplastic particles. Surface sediments had an average of 280 (±290) particles/kg, ranging from 30 to 790 particles/kg. Intertidal wetlands can sequester pollutants along estuarine conduits. Here we test the effectiveness of a mangrove-dominated estuary in removing dissolved nitrogen during a rain event. We intensively and simultaneously sampled surface water nutrients upstream and downstream of an estuary before, during and after a 63 mm rain event in Coffs Creek (Australia). NO x was the main form of dissolved nitrogen upstream of the estuary (∼60%), while dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) was an important form at the downstream station (∼46%) during observations. High NO x attenuation (71%) occurred during the rain event when the loads reached 31 μmol m−2 catchment area day−1. In contrast, the estuary was found to be a source of NH 4 + (∼5 μmol m−2 catchment area day−1). This implies a moderate conversion of upstream NO x into NH 4 + and DON along the transport pathway, likely due to tidally-driven pore water exchange within the anoxic estuarine mangrove sediments. Overall, the mangrove-lined estuary attenuated upstream total dissolved nitrogen loads, maintaining water quality and minimizing exports to the coastal ocean even during high flow conditions. Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (E. coli) O157:H7 is recognized as a hazardous microorganism in the environment. Its longer survival might contribute to higher contamination risk. In this study, E. coli O157:H7 survival in estuarine sediments collected from south Hangzhou Bay was investigated. The survival time of E. coli O157:H7 in estuarine sediments increased with the distance to the water-land junction. Sediment pH was the most important factor in regulating E. coli O157:H7 survival in estuarine sediments. In addition, sediment nutrients and texture also played significant roles in the survival of E. coli O157:H7 in the sediments. On the other hand, bacterial diversity as determined by the alpha-diversity index had no significant effect on E. coli O157:H7 survival. However, specific families of bacteria were closely associated with E. coli O157:H7 survival in the sediments. Remarkably, some potential bacterial groups, e.g., the Desulfobacteraceae, Desulfobulbaceae and Desulfarculaceae families, which are mainly involved in the sulfur cycle, showed significant negative correlation with the E. coli O157:H7 survival in the sediments. On the whole, abiotic factors showed greater effects on E. coli O157:H7 survival in the test sediments than the bacterial community. Our findings provide a comprehensive understanding of E. coli O157:H7 survival and regulatory factors in estuarine sediments, establishing foundation for the prevention of pathogen contamination. Cadmium has had a number of historical applications in plastics but is now highly regulated. In this study, plastics containing pigmented or recycled Cd at concentrations up to 16,300 μg g−1 were processed into microplastic-sized fragments and added to clean estuarine sediment. Plastic-sediment mixtures (mass ratio = 1:100) were subsequently exposed to fluids simulating the digestive conditions encountered in marine deposit-feeding invertebrates prepared from a protein and a bile acid surfactant in seawater and the mobilization of Cd measured as a function of time. Kinetic profiles over a six-hour period were complex, with some fitted using a diffusion model and others exhibiting evidence of Cd interactions between the plastic and sediment surface. The maximum concentration of Cd released from plastic-sediment mixtures was about 0.8 μg g−1 and orders of magnitude greater than Cd mobilization from sediment alone. Given the implications of microplastics contamination in aquatic ecosystems and information scarcity about microplastic abundances in estuarine sediments, this study aimed to quantify and describe the microplastics in the sublittoral sediments from Guanabara Bay. Sediment samples were collected at four sites and three months, microplastics were separated and classified according to type, color, size, and polymer composition. High abundances of microplastic (160 to 1000 items kg−1 or 4367 to 25,794 items m−2) occurred independent of area or period, indicating microplastics are widely spread in Guanabara Bay. The dominant microplastic in the sediment was the translucent polyester microfiber of <1 mm size; which is a secondary microplastic, possibly coming from washing machines wastes. Microplastics (MPs) in the environment have become an issue worldwide. However, data about MPs in freshwater systems are still limited so far. This study investigated sources, fate, and seasonal and spatial distribution of MPs in the main stream Pearl River and its tributaries, as well as in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE), China. MPs were widely detected in the river water, river bed sediment, and estuarine sediment, with abundances of 0.57 ± 0.71 items L−1, 685 ± 342 items kg−1 dry weight (dw), and 258 ± 133 items kg−1 dw, respectively. Sheet, fragmental, and fibrous polyethylene, polypropylene, and ethylene-propylene copolymers were predominant, suggesting that MPs in the Pearl River catchment be mainly derived from fragmentation of discarded plastic wastes. In addition, municipal wastewater was also an important MPs source, especially for polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fibers. Polymers of higher density, such as PET and polyvinyl alcohol were relatively more abundant in the sediment than in the river water, especially in the estuarine sediment. Upward increase of the MP abundance was observed in the sedimentary core, probably indicating increasing release of plastic wastes due to growing production and uses of plastic products. On the other hand, percentage of finer MPs increased with increasing depth. The results revealed persistence and potential downward dispersion of the fine MPs. The MPs abundance was positively related with population density and gross domestic product, demonstrating impacts of human activities and economic development on the MPs contamination. Antifouling paint particles (APPs) of between 500 μm and >2 mm in diameter have been identified in silty, intertidal estuarine sediments through a combination of microscopy and x-ray fluorescence spectrometry. APPs were heterogeneously distributed, with maximal concentrations of 430 particles L−1 (0.2 g L−1) near to a facility where boats are regularly maintained and 400 particles L−1 (4.2 g L−1) at a location where old boats had been abandoned, with the majority of particles encountered in the finest size fraction retrieved. APPs contained variable concentrations of Cu, Zn, Sn and Pb, with respective maxima of 562,000, 269,000, 9,970 and 126,000 mg kg−1. These characteristics are attributed to a multitude of contemporary and historic sources of an assortment of formulations and result in significant but heterogeneous metal contamination of local sediments. APPs were also identified in the guts of the deposit-feeding ragworm, Hediste diversicolor , that inhabited sediments impacted by abandoned boats or boating activities. The tissue of H. diversicolor was particularly enriched in Cu where ingested APPs were observed, with a significant correlation between dry weight Cu concentrations in the two media (r = 0.734) presumably reflecting the inability of the animal to regulate this metal. While the toxicity of APPs requires further investigation, there is clearly a need for stricter regulations on antifouling wastes in boatyards and marinas and a requirement to better manage abandoned boats. Petroleum biomarkers (hopanes, terpanes and steranes) are frequently assessed in estuarine sediments as tracers of oil input. In order to compare distinct patterns of hydrocarbon accumulation in mudflats, salt marsh and mangrove, sediments from two transects (control and impacted areas) were sampled in Paranaguá Bay, SW Atlantic. Concentrations of n -alkanes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and petroleum biomarkers (hopanes, terpanes and steranes) were determined, as well as bulk parameters (TOC, grain size and δ13C). N -alkanes concentrations were similar between control and impacted sites (respectively, 3.03 ± 1.20 μg g−1 and 4.11 ± 3.02 μg g−1) and reflected a high biogenic input. Conversely, PAHs and petroleum biomarker concentrations were three to six times higher in impacted site than the control site (respectively, 60.4 ± 23.3 ng g−1 and 22.0 ± 25.0 ng g−1 for PAHs and 197.7 ± 51.8 ng g−1 and 40.2 ± 32. ng g−1 for hopanes). Despite these differences, concentrations were lower than those reported for highly impacted areas worldwide. Diagnostic ratios and hydrocarbon parameters (e.g. total PAHs and total petroleum biomarkers) helped to distinguish human impact in the ecological zones, suggesting different sources and/or levels of weathering, confirmed by ANOVA tests. TOC played a fundamental role to the concentration of hydrocarbons, showing similar distributions along the transects. Petroleum biomarkers could clearly indicate the preferential sites of deposition and assign different levels of anthropic contamination by hydrocarbons, thus providing clear information about the chronic petroleum pollution in coastal sediments. The aim of the study was the investigation of bacterial diversity from sediments collected at Santos Estuarine System, regarding to their abilities for hexadecane biotransformation. Hexadecane is a medium-chain linear alkane, considered as a model molecule for hydrocarbon biodegradation studies. It is a component from aliphatic fraction of crude petroleum, commonly related to environmental contamination by diesel oil. Santos Basin is an area with historical petroleum contamination. In the present work, sediment samples from this area were inoculated in artificial seawater (ASW), containing hexadecane as carbon source. Six bacterial isolates were selected as resistant to hexadecane. Chromatographic results showed biodegradation indexes above 97%. After 48 h of culture, five of them could degrade >80% of the initial hexadecane added. These isolates were characterized by 16S rDNA gene sequencing analysis. Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) is an important process in marine nitrogen cycle. In this study, diverse anammox bacteria were identified in the sediments of the Changjiang (Yangtze) Estuary and its adjacent area. Specifically, the community characters of anammox bacteria in the studied area were studied by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), as well as 16S rRNA gene- and functional gene (hzo)-based Roche 454 sequencing. The abundance of denitrifying bacteria detected by the nirS gene was greater than that of anammox bacteria. 16S rRNA and hzo gene fragments affiliating with known anammox bacterial lineages were recovered, and the two major phylotypes belonged to the Candidatus Scalindua (Ca. Scalindua) genus, with >90% sequence similarity. A phylogenetic analysis detected the Scalindua and Brocadia genera together with some anammox-like bacterial clusters, which suggested a higher diversity in the studied ecosystem than in open ocean environment, where only Scalindua genus was detected. A redundancy analysis (RDA) showed that total organic carbon (TOC) and total nitrogen (TN) content in sediments significantly influenced anammox bacterial abundance of. Spearman correlation analyses confirmed that the spatial variation in anammox bacterial abundance was highly correlated with TOC (P < 0.01) and TN (P < 0.01) contents in sediments. Abstract The changes of available forms of heavy metals would affect their corresponding ecological risks in sediments. The distribution of chemical fractions of heavy metals in sediment profiles from Chunfeng Lake estuary was investigated and then a prediction model for potential ecological risk index (PMRI) was proposed to forecast the changes of ecological risks caused by the aging process of metals in sediments. The results show that the estuarine sediments were polluted by As and Cd. The proportions of available metals were generally decreased with depth, while those of the residual forms showed an opposite trend. The aging rates of Cd and As were found to be 0.21 and 0.12%/year, respectively. The PMRI model showed that the total ecological risk of metals in sediments decreased from moderate to low risk level (<150) after 25 years, while cadmium would need 47 years in contrast to the 15 years for As. Studies involving coastal sediment resuspension have shown that trace metals could be released to the water column due to changes in physical-chemical conditions. Therefore, if environmental agencies adopt screening protocols with insufficient evaluations of contaminant mobilization risks for a given area, the prediction of environmental impacts caused by dredging may be limited. This work evaluates the influence of spatial variation on the geochemical mobility of trace metals (Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) after artificial sediment resuspension, using as study case the Iguaçu River estuary (Guanabara Bay, Brazil). The Iguaçu River drains the industrial complex of the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro State, besides the presence of agriculture and the input of untreated domestic wastes. Surface estuarine sediments were submitted to resuspension experiments in an open system, during 1h and 24h of agitation on local water. A clear tendency of metals' solubilization was observed after resuspension, especially considering the dissolved concentrations of Cu (average: 8.0 µg L-1) and Zn (average: 0.9 mg L-1), especially for the samples from the transects 2 and 3. However, evaluations of water quality changes due to sediment resuspension are not requested by the legislation regulating the dredging activities. In the sediments, the results suggested a higher geochemical mobility of Cu, indicated by the massive increase on the bioavailable fraction after resuspension, mainly on the transect number 3, on the river's mouth. The effects of resuspension were distinct between samples, suggesting that even in a small scale, important differences on metals' mobility are found. Thus, the combined assessment of changes in metal concentrations in water and in the metal partitioning linked to the solid-phase was demonstrated to be a promising tool for predicting the environmental risks of dredging due to changes in the bioavailability of metals. Abstract Beryllium (Be) is of a significant concern because of its mutagenic and carcinogenic properties. However, reports on presences of Be in sediments from aquaculture areas still remain unknown. This study investigated the total concentration and bioavailability of Be in the surface sediments from Rongjiang River and its estuary in a large-scale aquaculture wetland in Chaoshan metropolis, South China; together with its probabilistic ecological risks posed to aquatic organisms. The total and bioavailable concentrations of Be were in the range of 5.11–8.02 and 0.23–0.33 mg/kg, respectively. Total concentration of Be mainly originated from anthropogenic source and bioavailable Be was <6% of the total concentration of Be. The probabilistic ecological risk assessment based on bioavailable concentration of Be showed that surface sediments of Rongjiang River and its estuary had a low (2.91%) probability of toxic effect to aquatic organisms. Compared to freshwater ecosystems, the health status of estuarine waters remains little studied despite their importance for many species. They represent a zone of interest for Human settlements that make them the final sink of pollution in both the water column and sediment. Once in sediments, pollutants could represent a threat to benthic as well as pelagic estuarine species through resuspension events. In the Seine estuary, the copepod Eurytemora affinis has been previously presented as a relevant species to assess resuspended sediment contamination through fitness-related effects at the individual level. The aim of the present study was to use E. affinis copepods to assess estuarine sediment-derived elutriates toxicity at environmental concentrations of particles using a molecular (i.e. transcriptomics) and a behavioral approach. Two sites along the Seine estuary were sampled. The analysis of sediments reveals that both sites have the same granulometric composition and close contamination profiles with the detection of PCBs, PAHs and pyrethroid insecticides. The transcriptomic analysis reveals that exposure to elutriates from both sites triggers the dysregulation of genes involved in biological function as defense response, immunity, ecdysone pathway or neurotoxicity with 66% and 36% of shared genes at the highest concentration for Tancarville and Fatouville. This analysis also reveals a higher count of dysregulated genes in the Fatouville site compared to the Tancarville (271 vs 148) despite their close contamination profile. These results emphasize the molecular approach sensitivity to assess environmental matrix toxicity with E. affinis. The analysis of the swimming behavior of E. affinis did not highlight significant effects after elutriate exposure. However, our strategy to assess E. affinis swimming behavior allows the discrimination of basal swimming behavior i.e. dark/light velocity changes and strong thigmotaxis behavior. Heavy metals (HMs) exist in various chemical forms in marine sediments, and environmental factors like the redox potential (Eh) can affect labile-bound HMs, harming aquatic life and human health. This study utilized the Tessier sequential extraction to investigate how Eh affects the binding forms of elements, including Cd, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, Fe, and Mn. The results revealed that decreasing Eh from 120 to 50 mV resulted in the release of weakly bound forms of Cd, Co, Ni, Pb, and Zn into the water, some of which were re-adsorbed by the residual fraction as Eh decreased further to −150 mV. Manganese was consistently bound to Fe Mn oxides, while Cu and Fe were predominantly associated with the more stable binding phase. Based on EF, I geo , and CF, sediment was only polluted by As nearby an industrial zone, while water pollution indices indicated significant HMs contamination in all water samples. The antibiotic concentrations spanned from 11.2 to 173.8 ng/g, with quinolones and tetracyclines being observed to be prevalent. The amount of microbial biomass as determined by Phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) ranged from 2.92 to 10.99 mg kg−1, with G- bacteria dominating. A total of 254 distinct ARGs and 10 MEGs were identified, with multidrug ARGs having the highest relative abundance (1.18 × 10−2 to 3.00 × 10−1 copies/16S rRNA gene copies), while vancomycin and sulfonamide resistance genes were the least abundant. Results from canonical-correlation analyses combined with redundancy analysis indicated that macrolides were significantly related to the shifts of microbial community structure in sediments, particularly in G+ bacteria that were more sensitive to antibiotic residues. Four different types of 0–30 cm soil/sediment samples were collected from aquaculture land, farmland, industrial land and river bottom sediment in the estuary area of Dagu River, and the pollution status and sources of 7 PCB congeners were analyzed. The results showed that the mean values of Σ 7 PCBs in soil/sediments of different land use types were 5.01 ng g−1 dw for industrial land, 3.6 ng g−1 dw for estuarine sediments, 2.09 ng g−1 dw for farmland soil and 1.78 ng g−1 dw for farming land. All samples were at low pollution levels and pose little ecological risks. PCBs in the samples are mainly comprised of highly chlorinated biphenyls, and their content decreases gradually with increasing sampling depth. The results showed that the mean values of Σ 7 PCBs in soil/sediments of different land use types were 5.01 ng g−1 dw for industrial land, 3.6 ng g−1 dw for estuarine sediments, 2.09 ng g−1 dw for farmland soil and 1.78 ng g−1 dw for farming land. All samples were at low pollution levels and pose little ecological risks. PCBs in the samples are mainly comprised of highly chlorinated biphenyls, and their content decreases gradually with increasing sampling depth. Based on the principal component analysis, it is concluded that the main source of PCBs in the study area is shipping activities, in addition to atmospheric transport and sedimentation sources. • Seven types of PCBs were found in the soil and sediments of different land types in the Dagu River Estuary. • The Σ 7 PCBs content of most sampling points gradually decreased with increasing depth. • PCBs not only came from shipbuilding and shipping activities in the area, but also from atmospheric transport and deposition. • The PCBs pollution in the area showed negligible ecological risks. The effects of Nereis diversicolor bioturbation on the remobilization and bioavailability of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from estuarine sediment were determined after 60 d in a laboratory experiment. The release fluxes and mass transfer coefficients showed that bioturbation by N. diversicolor can lead to a significant remobilization of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from estuarine sediments. Bioturbation enhanced the release of PAHs from sediment to water by accelerating the transport of sediment particles to the sediment-water interface followed by PAHs desorption to the water. The bioavailability of PAHs was described by SPMD-sediment accumulation factors (SSAF). The SSAF of low molecular weight PAHs with bioturbation was significantly higher than that of PAHs without bioturbation, and there were no significant variations in high-molecular-weight PAHs. Our results revealed that N. diversicolor bioturbation significantly increased PAHs release from sediment to water but only increased the bioavailability of low-molecular-weight PAHs. Abstract This work tackles a multidisciplinary study on the recent sedimentary record of the Bilbao estuary (northern Spain), which is the backbone of a city that was primarily industrial and now is widely recognized as a successful example of urban transformation. Although hotspots of heavily polluted materials still remain at the mouth of the two main tributaries (Galindo and Gobelas), the data obtained confirm the ongoing formation of a new layer of sediments (here called "postindustrial zone") covering historically polluted and azoic deposits. It is characterized by largely variable levels of metals and magnetic susceptibility and moderate-to-high abundances of benthic foraminifera. Monitoring of the evolution of this layer appears a key factor to assess environmental improvement and decision-making in polluted estuaries. The occurrence, distribution, and the total mass of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were studied in surficial sediments of the Paranaguá Estuarine System (PES), a subtropical estuary in Southern Atlantic. Altogether, concentrations and inventories of contaminants ranged from <0.06 to 4.78 ng g −1 and < 0.13 to 10.47 ng cm −2 , respectively. OCPs presented the higher total mass (10.85 kg) and a decreasing trend from the inner estuary towards the adjoining shallow shelf. The occurrence of PCBs was restricted to sites nearby urban and industrial areas, which accumulated ~80% of the total mass of PCBs. Although the level of contamination is low, the results refer to recent years, which mean that the actual values could be greater if sediments from periods of higher usage were analyzed. Twenty four surface sediments were gathered from the Uppanar river estuary, southern India to evaluate the trace element contamination risk in the sediments. The circulation of organic matter and calcium carbonate were controlled by algal blooms and shell fragments. Moreover, the concentrations of iron and manganese in the estuarine sediments were possibly contributed by riverine sources and geogenic processes. The geoaccumulation index, enrichment factor and contamination factor reveals that the sediments were contaminated by copper and chromium. The pollution load index recommends that the estuarine sediments have the risk of pollution. The sediment pollution index highlights that the majority of the sediments are low polluted sediments. The potential ecological risk index discloses that the Uppanar river estuary is under moderate risk. The statistical analysis reveals that the organic matter content is managed by fine fractions and the majority of the trace elements are associated with each other having similar origin. Estuarine sediments can be a source of Phosphorus (P) to coastal waters, contributing to nutrient budgets and geochemical cycles. In this work, the concentration and speciation of P in 47 cores were examined from the inter-tidal mud flats of the tidal river Thames (~ 120 km). Results of P concentration and speciation were combined with published data relating to known sediment dynamics and water chemistry (salinity) within the estuary to produce a conceptual model of sediment-P behaviour. Results demonstrated significant P desorption occurring after sediment passed through the Estuarine Turbidity Maximum and when the salinity of the river water exceeded ~ 6 ppt. It was found that organic P was desorbed to a greater extent than inorganic P in the lower estuary. Models were used to identify those geochemical parameters that contributed to the Total P (R 2 = 0.80), oxalate extractable P (R 2 = 0.80) and inorganic P (R 2 = 0.76) concentrations within the Thames estuary. Surface sediments from three zones (fresh water, estuarine, and riverine/industrial zones) of the Cochin estuary, Southwest coast of India, were seasonally analyzed to understand the nature and degradation status of organic matter. Amino acid-based indices such as total hydrolyzable amino acids (THAAs), percentage contributions of amino acid carbon to total organic carbon (THAA-C%) and those of amino acid nitrogen to total nitrogen (THAA-N%), and degradation index (DI) were calculated. Elevated levels of amino acids in the sediments of the estuary were attributed to river runoff, autochthonous production, allochthonous inputs, and industrial and domestic effluent discharges. Higher levels of THAA-C%, THAA-N%, THAA, and positive DI found in most of the stations suggest the fresh deposition of organic matter. Multivariate statistical analyses revealed that the dispersal pattern of amino acids depends on the sediment texture, organic matter, redox state, and microbial processes in the study region. The present study aims to isolate diverse actinomycetes communities from the estuarine sediments of Patalganga located at Northwest coast of India. Total 40 actinomycetes were isolated from 24 sediment samples by dilution plating on six different isolation media. Among them, morphologically 18 distinct selected isolates of actinomycetes were verified by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and identified as Streptomyces spp. The relationship between diversity of total actinomycetes population (TAP) and its antagonistic behaviour with the physico-chemical characteristics of sediment samples were investigated. Multiple regression analysis revealed that the influencing physico-chemical factors comprises of sediment temperature, sediment pH, organic carbon and heavy metals. The results of statistical analysis showed that TAP is positively correlated (p < 0.01) with sediment organic carbon whereas, negatively correlated with Cr (p < 0.05) and Mn (p < 0.01). Based on Principle component Analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis results, the obtained six stations can be divided into three groups. Among them mobile fraction of metals, TAP could be the main factor reflecting the lower and middle estuary. A methodology to assess the historical evolution and recovery of heavy metal pollution in estuarine sediments was developed and is presented here. This approach quantifies the distribution of heavy metals in sediment cores, and investigates the influence of anthropogenic activities and/or core locations on the heavy metal pollution, by proposing and using sediment quality indices and polynomial regressions. The method has been applied to the Suances Estuary confirming its suitability as a comprehensive and practical management tool. In this estuary, the evolution of heavy metal pollution (since 1997–1998 to 2015) pointed out the deeper the sediments, the more polluted, indicating a recovery at the upper layers due to the closure and ending of washing discharges from mining, and the reduction of metal loads from industrial wastewaters. In terms of global pollution, the intertidal and subtidal sediments will require 43.1 ± 2.8 and 8.6 ± 0.6 years to be unpolluted, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Environmental risk assessment of complex ecosystems such as estuaries is a challenge, where innovative and integrated approaches are needed. The present work aimed at developing an innovative integrative methodology to evaluate in an impacted estuary (the Sado, in Portugal, was taken as case study), the adverse effects onto both ecosystem and human health. For the purpose, new standardized lines of evidence based on multiple quantitative data were integrated into a weight of evidence according to a best expert judgment approach. The best professional judgment for a weight of evidence approach in the present study was based on the following lines of evidence: i) human contamination pathways; ii) human health effects: chronic disease; iii) human health effects: reproductive health; iv) human health effects: health care; v) human exposure through consumption of local agriculture produce; vi) exposure to contaminated of water wells and agriculture soils; vii) contamination of the estuarine sedimentary environment (metal and organic contaminants); viii) effects on benthic organisms with commercial value; and ix) genotoxic potential of sediments. Each line of evidence was then ordinally ranked by levels of ecological or human health risk, according to a tabular decision matrix and expert judgment. Fifteen experts scored two fishing areas of the Sado estuary and a control estuarine area, in a scale of increasing environmental risk and management actions to be taken. The integrated assessment allowed concluding that the estuary should not be regarded as impacted by a specific toxicant, such as metals and organic compounds hitherto measured, but by the cumulative risk of a complex mixture of contaminants. The proven adverse effects on species with commercial value may be used to witness the environmental quality of the estuarine ecosystem. This method argues in favor of expert judgment and qualitative assessment as a decision support tool to the integrative management of estuaries. Namely it allows communicating environmental risk and proposing mitigation measures to local authorities and population under a holistic perspective as an alternative to narrow single line of evidence approaches, which is mandatory to understand cause and effect relationships in complex areas like estuaries. Severe metal pollution due to industrial effluents releases has been documented in Jiulong River estuary, Southern China. However, integrated understanding of trace metal behavior in the sediment is lacking. In the present study, DGT (diffusive gradients in thin films) technique was employed together with sediment cores to study the porewater dynamics of trace metals as well as the benthic exchange fluxes from four sampling sites over three different months. The sedimentary environment showed distinct spatial and temporal variations due to effluent discharge and biological activities. Metal behavior was controlled by early diagenetic reactions below the interface, in suboxic layer and in deeper sediment. Precipitation as sulfides and adsorption onto Mn/Fe (hydr)oxides were important in scavenging trace metals. Estimated exchange fluxes at sediment-water interface in this estuary indicated that the overlying water was a major source for trace metals, whereas sediments could also be the source if surface remobilization (Mn/Fe reduction) dominated. Aquaculture wetlands, particularly those located within urban areas, are fragile ecosystems due to urban and aquaculture impacts. However, to date, there are no reports on the combined toxicity of heavy metal mixtures in aquatic biota in sediments from aquaculture wetlands in metropolitan areas. Thus, the characterization, bioavailability, and ecological probability risk of heavy metals were studied in the riverine/estuarine sediments of the Rongjiang River in an aquaculture wetland in Chaoshan metropolis, South China. In the study area, the average total concentrations (mg/kg) were 2.38 (Cd), 113.40 (Pb), 88.27 (Cr), 148.25 (Ni), 62.08 (Cu), 125.18 (Zn), 45,636.44 (Fe), and 797.18 (Mn), with the Cd pollution being regarded as extremely serious based on the enrichment factor (EF). There are two main sources of heavy metals in the study area; Ni, Pb, Zn, Fe and Mn are mainly from domestic waste, while Cr, Cd and Cu are possibly associated with industrial production activities. The bioavailability of most heavy metals accounted for more than 20% of the total concentration. The combined toxicity of heavy metal mixtures based on probabilistic risk assessment suggests that the surface sediments of the Rongjiang River and its estuary had a 15.71% probability of toxic effects on aquatic biota.
