A new plasmodiocarpic and sporocarpic species of myxomycete in the genus Physarum is described and illustrated. This new species appeared on decayed leaves and remains of succulent plants ( Agave , Opuntia , Yucca ) growing in arid zones. It differs from all other species in the genus in having polyhedral spores linked in chains like a string of beads, a unique feature within all known myxomycetes. Apart from detailed morphological data, partial sequences of both the small-subunit ribosomal RNA and elongation factor 1-alpha genes, generated from four isolates collected in two distant regions, i.e., Mexico and Canary Islands, are also provided in this study. Soybean ( Glycine max (L.) Merr.) has excellent potential as an alternative crop to canola in southern Alberta farming systems. However, soybean is susceptible to Fusarium root rot, which usually results in the occurrence of dead or dying plants in mid-to-late summer and severe reductions in yield. A total of 102 isolates identified as Fusarium were recovered from diseased soybean root samples collected from central and southern Alberta from 2011 to 2013. Ten species of Fusarium were identified, with F. acuminatum as the predominant species (31 out of 102 isolates, 30.39%), followed by F. equiseti (16.67%), F. culmorum (13.73%), F. avenaceum (10.78%), F. oxysporum (8.82%), F. redolens (7.84%), F. torulosum (4.90%), F. tricinctum (2.94%), F. commune (1.96%) and F. proliferatum (0.98%). This is the first report of F. commune , F. redolens and F. torulosum causing root rot in soybean in Canada. Phylogenetic analyses based on sequence data from the translation elongation factor 1-α (EF-1α) and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region were used to evaluate genetic variation and, in conjunction with morphological characters, for species identification. Fusarium wilt is a disease that restricts carnation ( Dianthus caryophyllus L.) yield worldwide. Efficacies in reducing the Fusarium wilt of carnation (FWC), of various types of organic amendments (fresh or pelletized poultry manure, pelletized Brassica carinata and olive residue compost) combined with soil solarization, were compared in two biennial field trials conducted in a greenhouse with a history of carnation monoculture over 8 years. Soil treatments combining organic amendments and soil solarization significantly reduced disease incidence (86–99%) and increased the number of commercial carnation stems by 5–9 times compared to non-treated plots. Twenty-one Fusarium spp. isolates, with different colony morphologies were recovered from soil samples taken in the greenhouse, before the application of treatments in June 2013. Nineteen of them were morphological and molecularly characterized. Additionally, two pathogenicity tests with 17 isolates recovered from greenhouse soils and two isolates recovered from organic amendments were performed. Fusarium species associated with carnation cultivation were identified as Fusarium oxysporum (43%) , Fusarium proliferatum (24%), and Fusarium solani (33%). The phylogenetic analysis of the translation elongation factor 1 alpha ( EF-1α ) region distinguished highly aggressive isolates of F. oxysporum f. sp. dianthi , from low aggressive isolates. The pathogenicity tests showed that FWC has a complex etiology, with several Fusarium spp. identified as causal agents.
