Abstract

Abstract: ALICE [1] (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) is the detector system at the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) optimized for the study of heavy-ion collisions. Its main aim is to study the behavior of strongly interacting matter and the quark gluon plasma. Currently all the information sent by the 18 sub-detectors composing ALICE are read out by DATE [2] (Data Acquisition and Test Environment), the ALICE data acquisition software, using several optical links called DDL[3] (Detector Data Link), each one with a maximum throughput of 200 MB/s. In the last year a commercial transmission link with a throughput of 10 Gb/s has become a reality, with a low price affordable for everyone. The DATE system has been upgraded to also support this technology in addition to the DDL. This contribution will describe the VHDL firmware of a detector readout board, sending data using the UDP protocol and the changes made to the readout [4] part of DATE software to receive information coming from the 1 or 10 Gb/s Ethernet link. It will also describe the relevant details of the test firmware and software and will conclude with the results of the performance tests done at CERN using the new setup. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

SCI's ultra low latency and high bandwidth [11] make it a possible candidate to solve the problem of interconnecting a large number of processors in order to filter data produced in high energy physics experiments. In particular this chapter focuses on prototyping for the second level trigger system of the ATLAS experiment [2], at the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN). After a brief introduction to the problem of real-time data selection in HEP experiments in Section 23.2, Section 23.3 presents the definition, design, implementation and test of a low-level Application Programming Interface (API) for SCI. Abstract

Purpose: We report the preliminary results of endoscopic treatment of vesicoureteral reflux in children using polyacrylate polyalcohol copolymer. Material and Methods: We performed a prospective multicenter review of pediatric patients treated with subureteral injection of a new nonabsorbable substance. Only patients with 1 year of followup were included. Results: A total of 83 patients underwent injection of polyacrylate polyalcohol copolymer at our institutions between 2005 and 2006. Among this group 18 males and 43 females with a median age of 58 months (range 9 months to 18 years) completed 1 year of followup. Reflux was bilateral in 27 patients (44.3%) and unilateral in 34 (55.7%). Number of injected ureters was 88. Reflux grade was V in 3 ureters (3.4%), IV in 12 (13.6%), III in 41 (46.6%) and II in 32 (36.4%). Mean ± SD injected volume per unit was 0.76 ± 0.43 ml. Median followup was 20 months (range 16 to 24). Complications after injection included dysuria in 6 patients (9.8%), fever in 3 (4.9%) and lumbar pain in 4 (6.6%). Reflux was eliminated in 78 renal units (88.6%), decreased to grade I in 6 (6.8%) and persisted in 4 (4.5%). Ureteral obstruction developed in 1 patient and was treated operatively. Overall success rate was 83.6%. Conclusions: Polyacrylate polyalcohol copolymer can be used to treat vesicoureteral reflux with comparable efficacy to other substances currently used, with a low rate of complications. Abstract

The total punchthrough probability of showers produced by negative pions, positive pions, positive kaons and protons, has been measured as a function of depth in an absorber in a magnetic field ranging from 0 to 3 Tesla. The incident particle momentum varied from 10 to 300 GeV/c. The lateral shower development and particle multiplicity at several absorber depths have been determined. The measurements are compared with the predictions of Monte Carlo simulation programs.

Abstract

We present results obtained in p-A (A=C, Cu, Pb) — collisions at 38 GeV/c. A single particle trigger selects events with one charged particle in the central region and large transverse momentum. The effect of this trigger on the multiplicities of all charged particles and of protons is shown.

Abstract

Measurements ofKs0, ? and " production in p- nucleus (C, Cu, Pb) interactions are presented. The experiment was carried out with the streamer chamber spectrometer RISK using a p- beam of ~40 GeV/c and a trigger requiring a secondary charged particle with transverse momentum above 1.1 GeV/c. Production cross sections, relative production rates and distributions of Feynmanx and transverse momentum squared as well as correlations between theV0 and the trigger particle are presented. The results are compared and found to be in agreement withKs0, ? and " data from untriggered p-p and p-C interactions, except for the relative production rate of antilambdas which is about to times larger in high-pt collisions. Our results can be well interpreted within the dual topological unitarization model.

Abstract

In the context of research and development activities for future hadron colliders, competitive implementations of real-time algorithms for feature extraction have been made on various forms of commercial pipelined and parallel architectures. The algorithms used for benchmarking serve for decision making and are of relative complexity; they are required to run with a repetition rate of 100 kHz on data sets of kilobyte size. Results are reported and discussed in detail. Among the commercially available architectures, pipelined image processing systems can compete with custom-designed architectures. General-purpose processors with systolic mesh connectivity can also be used. Massively parallel systems of the SIMD type (many processors executing the same program on different data) are less suitable in the presently marketed form.<>

Abstract

Interactions of 40 GeV/c πp-,K− and " on Li, C, S, Cu, CsI and Pb were studied with the RISK-streamer chamber spectrometer. We present multiplicities of negatively charged particles, as well as of protons, and the correlations between them. The normalized mean multiplicity of negative particles,R−, depends on ", the average number of inelastic collisions as ". The dependence of the normalized dispersion of negative particles,D−/−>, on the number of protons favours independent collision models and contradicts the coherent tube picture. The excess of fast positive particles behaves asA0.4 and shows, for the heavier nuclei, a clear correlation with identified protons.
