Within the dielectric continuum model, we calculate the interface phonons in multilayered spherical nanostructures. The effect of the alloying in the shell material, together with the change in the embedding medium are also analyzed. In all investigated heterostructures, the interface characteristics experiment a constantlike tendency at critical geometrical parameter gc, whose values are sensitively determined by the ratio between dielectric constants of constitutive materials. We observe that the asymptotic limiting interface frequencies slightly depend on the embedding medium. For special cases, the high-index phonon branches cross each other for specific values of geometrical parameter g . This crossing-over critically depends on the core-to-shell dielectric constants ratio and on the type of host material. Also, we observe that the presence of Ga-impurity in the shell material makes the highest shell-like modes independent both on the geometrical parameter g and on the orbital index l . A succession of quartz-rich fluvial sandstones and siltstones derived from a mainly rhyolitic source and minor metamorphic rocks, located to the west, represent the first Upper Paleocene–Early Eocene deposits described in Chilean eastern central Patagonian Cordillera (46°45′S). This unit, exposed 25km south of Chile Chico, south of lago General Carrera, is here defined as the Ligorio Márquez Formation. It overlies with an angular unconformity Lower Cretaceous shallow marine sedimentary rocks (Cerro Colorado Formation) and subaerial tuffs that have yielded K–Ar dates of 128, 125 and 123Ma (Flamencos Tuffs, of the Divisadero Group). The Ligorio Márquez Formation includes flora indicative of a tropical/subtropical climate, and its deposition took place during the initial part of the Late Paleocene–Early Eocene Cenozoic optimum. The underlying Lower Cretaceous units exhibit folding and faulting, implying a pre-Paleocene–Lower Eocene contractional tectonism. Overlying Oligocene–Miocene marine and continental facies in the same area exhibit thrusts and normal faults indicative of post-Lower Miocene contractional tectonism.

Summary

1. Vestibular and prepositus hypoglossi (PH) neurones projecting to the abducens (ABD) nucleus were recorded in the alert cat. Their discharge characteristics were analysed to ascertain the origin of the horizontal eye position signal present in ABD neurones. 2. Neurones were classified according to: their location with respect to the ABD nucleus; their antidromic activation from the ABD nucleus; the synaptic field potential they induced in the ABD nucleus with the spike‐triggered averaging technique; and their activity during spontaneous and vestibularly induced eye movements. 3. Vestibular neurones projecting to the ABD nucleus were located in the rostral medial vestibular nucleus. They were excitatory on the contralateral and inhibitory on the ipsilateral ABD neurones. Both types of premotor vestibular neurone showed a firing rate weakly related to eye position, increasing for eye fixations in the contralateral on‐direction, and decreasing with ipsilateral fixation. Position sensitivity during eye fixations was (means +/‐ S.D.) 1.8 +/‐ 0.9 spikes s‐1 deg‐1 for excitatory neurones and 2.2 +/‐ 1.3 spikes s‐1 deg‐1 for inhibitory neurones. Firing rate exhibited a high variability during eye fixations. Their responses during saccades in the off‐direction were characterized by a pause that, although less defined, was occasionally present during saccades in the on‐direction. Eye velocity sensitivity during spontaneous saccades in the on‐direction was 0.17 +/‐ 0.15 spikes s‐1 deg‐1 s‐1 for excitatory neurones and 0.15 +/‐ 0.07 spikes s‐1 deg‐1 s‐1 for inhibitory vestibular neurones. During sinusoidal head stimulation at 0.2 Hz, vestibular neurones showed a type I discharge rate with a phase lead over eye position of 86.0 +/‐ 14.1 deg for excitatory and 80.2 +/‐ 12.5 deg for inhibitory neurones. Position sensitivity during vestibular stimulation did not differ significantly from values obtained for spontaneous eye movements. However, the velocity sensitivity of premotor vestibular neurones during head rotation was significantly higher (1.6 +/‐ 0.2 spikes s‐1 deg‐1 s‐1 for excitatory and 1.5 +/‐ 0.3 spikes s‐1 deg‐1 s‐1 for inhibitory neurones) than during spontaneous eye movements. 4. PH neurones projecting to the ABD nucleus were located in the rostral one‐third of the nucleus. These neurones were excitatory on the ipsilateral and inhibitory on the contralateral ABD nucleus. Their firing rates were correlated mainly with eye position, increasing for abducting eye positions of the ipsilateral eye and decreasing with adduction movements.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

The form factors of the electron–phonon interaction for GaAs/Ga1−xAlxAs single heterostructures have been evaluated using a finite height barrier. The calculations are performed within the extreme quantum limit approximation, assuming for the envelope electronic wavefunction a modified Fang–Howard wavefunction. Both types of long-wave phonons, longitudinal optical and interface phonons, are considered. It is found that the effect of the finite height is to reduce the strength of the electron–phonon interaction.

Two types of central nervous system integrators are critical for oculomotor performance. The first integrates velocity commands to create position signals that hold fixation of the eye. The second stores relative velocity of the head and visual surround to stabilize gaze both during and after the occurrence of continuous self and world motion. We have used recordings from single neurons to establish that the "position" and "velocity" integrators for horizontal eye movement occupy adjacent, but nonoverlapping, locations in the goldfish medulla. Lidocaine inactivation of each integrator results in the eye movement deficits expected if horizontal eye position and velocity signals are processed separately. These observations also indicate that each brainstem compartment generates and stores these signals. Consequently, each integrator exhibits functional autonomy. Therefore, we propose that the intrinsic electrophysiological properties of the constituent neurons in each brainstem subnucleus may be sufficient for producing integrator rhythmicity.

Positron annihilation measurements in neutron-irradiated MgO crystals show that the positron lifetime is shorter than in as-grown crystals, suggesting that most of the defects produced by neutron irradiations are positively charged. The concentration of the neutral anion vacancy (possibly also the neutral anion divacancy) is estimated to be no more than ∼ 1016 cm-3 for samples irradiated to a dose of 1017 to 1019 n cm-2. Annealing experiments on the neutron-irradiated crystals show a significant increase in the positron lifetime after anneals at 900 K. The increase is attributed to positron trapping by anion - vacancy aggregates. A lifetime of (284±15)ps is tentatively assigned to positrons trapped in these aggregates.

1. The normal and adapted vestibuloocular reflex (VOR) of goldfish was characterized by means of sinusoidal, velocity step, and position step head rotations about the vertical axis. VOR adaptation was induced by short-term, 1- to 4-h, presentation of visual and vestibular stimuli that altered the ratio of eye to head velocity. 2. The VOR response measured with sinusoidal oscillations in the dark was close to ideal compensatory values over 2 decades (1/32-2 Hz). Gain approximated unity, and phase, in relation to the head, was nearly 180 degrees. The VOR was linear within the range of head velocity tested (4-64 degrees/s). 3. Head velocity steps from 1/8 to 1 Hz produced steplike eye velocity profiles that could be divided into an early acceleration-related "dynamic" component and a later constant-velocity "sustained" period frequently separated by a sag at approximately 0.1-0.15 s from the initiation of eye movement. The sustained response exhibited no decay during the constant-velocity component of the step. 4. Higher temporal resolution of the dynamic response showed the adducting eye movement to have a shorter latency, faster rise time, and larger peak gain than the abducting eye movement. The characteristics of this directional asymmetry were similar for position steps and electrical stimulation of the vestibular nerve. However, the asymmetry was not observed during sinusoidal head rotation, the sustained component of the step response, or after electrical stimulation of the VIth and IIIrd nerves. We conclude that this directional asymmetry is of central origin and may be largely due to the parallel vestibular and abducens internuclear neuron pathways onto medial rectus motoneurons. 5. The VOR adaptation process for both higher and lower eye velocity exhibited an exponential time course with time constants of 55 and 45 min, respectively. After continuous sinusoidal training for 4 h, VOR gain reached an asymptotic level 5% away from perfect suppression in the low-gain training, but 19% away from the actual performance in the high-gain paradigm. The time constant for VOR gain reversal was 5 h, and an asymptotic level 40% less than performance was reached within 10 h. 6. Adapted VOR gain was symmetrical for both directions of eye movement measured either during sinusoidal rotation or the sustained part of the velocity step. VOR adaptation also produced a comparable gain change in the nasal and temporal directions of the dynamic component, but this reflected the asymmetric characteristics observed in the preadapted condition.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

1. The time course of eye velocity responses elicited by head velocity steps was compared in normal, adapted, and cerebellectomized goldfish. Vestibuloocular reflex (VOR) adaptation was induced by combined visual and vestibular stimulation that altered the ratio of eye to head velocity (VOR gain) toward values either higher or lower than the control amplitude. The velocity step consisted of alternating periods of head rotation at a constant velocity of 16 degrees/s zero-to-peak around the vertical axis. 2. The VOR produced by head velocity steps consisted of an early acceleration-related component, the dynamic response, separated from a sustained period of constant velocity, the plateau, by a sag that occurred around 125-150 ms. Latency of the VOR averaged 18 ms for the adducting eye and 20 ms for abducting eye independent of the initial VOR gain. Adapted dynamic VOR responses diverged from the control records at the earliest detectable latency after both high and low VOR gain training. This result demonstrates modification in the shortest latency brain stem VOR pathway, presumably, the three-neuron reflex arc. 3. After acute cerebellectomy the adapted dynamic response was unaltered for approximately 50 ms in the low-gain and 70 ms in the high-gain VOR states. Not less than 30% of the altered velocity was retained throughout the remaining dynamic and sustained component. These results demonstrate that the vestibulocerebellum is not necessary for the maintenance of the earliest adapted eye velocity. Hence brain stem pathways are sufficient for the expression of the modified VOR. 4. Purkinje cells identified by simple and complex spikes were recorded extracellularly in the area of the vestibulocerebellum, where electrical stimulation produced conjugate ipsiversive horizontal eye movements. Independent eye and head velocity sensitivities were determined in response to visual world motion and VOR suppression, respectively. The two signals either added, canceled, or were both present in Purkinje cells throughout the range of eye velocity induced by vertical axis visual-vestibular stimulation. 5. Latency of Purkinje cell discharge to either a vestibular or visual velocity step exhibited means of 43 and 70 ms, respectively.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

1. The effects of botulinum neurotoxin (BoTx) injected into the lateral rectus muscle were examined in alert cats by recording the extracellular activity of abducens motoneurons during spontaneous eye movements. 2. A single high dose (3 ng/kg) of BoTx produced a complete paralysis of abduction that lasted for more than 2 mo. In addition, changes were found in the discharge pattern of abducens motoneurons. Motoneurons discharged steadily at a low firing rate (15-50 spikes/s), which in some instances showed a complete independence of eye position. Their increases in activity during ON-directed saccades were markedly reduced with respect to controls. The loss of inhibitory signals for OFF-directed saccades was even more evident. 3. A low dose (0.3 ng/kg) of BoTx also produced a paralysis of the lateral rectus muscle that lasted for approximately 1 mo. In this case, only minor modifications in the firing characteristics of abducens motoneurons were observed. 4. The present findings indicate that the effects of BoTx observed in the discharge pattern of abducens motoneurons might be due not only to target disconnection, but also to a central action of the neurotoxin on the motoneuron.

La radiofrecuencia es una técnica alternativa para el tratamiento de tumores pulmonares, primarios o metastásicos, aplicable cuando la cirugía no está indicada o implica un elevado riesgo. Aunque menos agresiva que la resección quirúrgica, la técnica no está desprovista de posibles complicaciones y efectos secundarios, máxime cuando se aplica sobre pacientes con una patología respiratoria grave y frecuente comorbilidad. Presentamos dos complicaciones graves, una fuga aérea intratable que causó el fallecimiento del paciente y un hemotórax de gran cuantía que pudo ser controlado en la propia sala de radiología. Se revisa la literatura sobre el tema y las recomendaciones para hacer la técnica lo más segura posible.

Voriconazole is frequently used as primary therapy for invasive aspergillosis. We report the case of a severely neutropenic patient with invasive pulmonary aspergillosis who was successfully treated with the combination of voriconazole and caspofungin after clinical failure of first-line therapy with voriconazole. Clinicians confronted with the failure of first-line therapy for invasive aspergillosis in an immunosuppressed patient should consider combination antifungal therapy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Enteroaggregative Escherichia coli (EAEC) is an increasingly recognized cause of acute diarrhea among both children and adults. Travelers to developing regions such as India, Jamaica, and Mexico are at increased risk. Contamination of food and water plays a central role in transmission. The clinical presentation of EAEC infection is characterized by watery diarrhea, usually unaccompanied by blood or mucus. The gold standard for diagnosis is the HEp-2 cell adherence assay; the unique 'stacked-brick' aggregative pattern of adherence is characteristic of this pathogen. However, because laboratory diagnosis is not routinely available, symptomatic infections are usually treated empirically. Abstract: A huge hyperplastic gastric polyp prolapsed into the duodenum. The compression and obstruction of the ampulla of Vater by this polyp caused acute pancreatitis. An overview of imaging findings, general considerations about hyperplastic gastric polyps, and a review of the literature are provided.

Context. The stable propagation of jets in FRII sources is remarkable if one takes into account that large-scale jets are subjected to potentially highly disruptive three-dimensional (3D) Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities.Aims. Numerical simulations can address this problem and help clarify the causes of this remarkable stability. Following previous studies of the stability of relativistic flows in two dimensions (2D), it is our aim to test and extend the conclusions of such works to three dimensions.Methods. We present numerical simulations for the study of the stability properties of 3D, sheared, relativistic flows. This work uses a fully parallelized code (Ratpenat) that solves equations of relativistic hydrodynamics in 3D.Results. The results of the present simulations confirm those in 2D. We conclude that the growth of resonant modes in sheared relativistic flows could be important in explaining the long-term collimation of extragalactic jets.
