Cancer affects not only the patient but also family members as informal caregivers. In order for family caregivers to achieve balance and improve their caregiving roles, it is essential to identify the beliefs and psychological aspects affecting them. The present study was carried out qualitatively with a descriptive phenomenological design in 2020. The main participants in this study were selected from one of the major referral centers for cancer patients in West Azerbaijan Province, located in northwestern, Iran. Twenty-two family caregivers were selected through a purposive sampling method. Data analysis showed that the 3 main themes of "emotional and religious preconceptions," "feeling committed to caring for beloveds," and "resilience" played a prominent role in family caregivers. These factors led to caregivers' commitment to and responsibility for care. Holistic care necessitates consideration of all aspects of human life. The results of this study led to an understanding of the complex tendencies and feelings of family caregivers. Based on the results, it was found that care is influenced by beliefs, religious preconceptions, sociocultural, and psychological factors. Identifying these variables helps medical staff share planning, interventions, and counseling with family caregivers and address issues that affect them. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Variations in culture and heritage can greatly impact an individual's beliefs, practices, and attitudes and may influence healthcare. The purpose of this research was to better understand the attitudes of student nurses toward older adults in the United States and Costa Rica. An exploratory quantitative research design was utilized for this study. Data were collected using the Kogan Old Persons scale from American and Costa Rican pre-licensure nursing students. Results revealed that total scores were very similar between students on the Kogan positive scale and the Kogan negative scale. Half of the individual items revealed significant differences between students of different cultures. Overall, nursing students reported positive attitudes toward older people with individual differences found between nationality and individual items. Understanding cultural variances and commonalities on student nurse attitudes toward older adults is important to the delivery of culturally diverse nursing education and culturally congruent care. Nurses provide care for people of many cultures. Understanding the patient's culture and incorporating cultural beliefs and practices into care are important to the patient's holistic well-being. Cultural and professional awareness creates culturally congruent care. Biblical teachings remind us to love one another; laws require culturally appropriate care, and nursing theory lays the path for understanding. The purpose of this article is to present a Christian view of caring, the theoretical and ethical underpinnings of cultural care, and the organizational and legal aspects of doing what is right. The denial of absolute truth is one of the most outstanding and pervasive characteristics of 20th century thinking (Cottrell, 2002). Nurses and other healthcare professionals are encouraged to tolerate all worldviews of their clients and not to assume that there is only one right worldview when treating a client. This predicament of cultural relativism means that we cannot be 100% certain of truth. However, 100% certainty is not necessary in order for one to have strong conviction or to have moral certainty as to the meaning of truth with a position. It is the position of this paper that there is a biblical understanding of truth that can help to guide nurses in effectively caring for culturally and ethnically diverse clients. The intent of this article is to provide the discipline and practice of nursing with transcultural truth that is biblically based. It is my hope that stimulation and a greater awareness of the attention and the need to incorporate biblical beliefs will help one to become more culturally competent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To explore the experiences of expatriate nurses caring for Muslim patients near end-of-life in a palliative care unit in the United Arab Emirates. A qualitative descriptive study, with data collected through semi structured individual interviews with nine expatriate nurses working in a palliative care unit in one hospital in the United Arab Emirates. Thematic analysis of the data transcripts used a structured inductive approach. Analysis of the interview transcripts yielded three themes. First, language was a significant barrier in end-of-life care but was transcended when nurses practiced authentically, using presence, empathetic touch and spiritual care. Secondly, relationships between nurses, patients and families were strengthened over time, which was not always possible due to late presentation in the palliative care unit. Finally, nurses were continually in discussions with physicians, families and other nurses, co-creating the meaning of new information and experiences within the hospital policy context. For expatriate nurses, palliative nursing in a Muslim middle eastern country is complex, requiring nurses to be creative in their communication to co-create meaning in an emotionally intensive environment. Like other palliative care settings, time can strengthen relationships with patients and their families, but local cultural norms often meant that patients came to palliative care late in their disease trajectory. Preparing expatriate nurses for work in specialist palliative care settings requires skill development in advanced communication and spiritual practices, as well as principles of palliative care and tenets of Muslim culture. • Care is enacted through the use of nonverbal communication strategies such as touch, presence, smiling and eye contact. • When language is a barrier, time and trust are integral to relationships with patients and their families near end of life. • Sharing of spiritual practices emerged as an act that was crucial to the provision of end of life care. Growing cultural diversity among immigrants has challenged health care practice in Taiwan. This study used mixed methods to evaluate how the implementation of a course on cultural competence embedded in a nursing course affected nursing students' perceptions of their cultural care competency. An evaluation survey with a quantitative questionnaire comprising pre- and post-test measures of self-perceived cultural care competency was implemented for 48 participants at the commencement and completion of the course. A focus group interview (n = 10) was conducted and a thematic approach applied to analyze qualitative data. The results found a significant improvement in self-perceived cultural care competency (t = 7.15, p < 0.001). Two themes emerged from the qualitative analysis: (1) the thought-provoking nature of the course and (2) appreciation for the multiple learning strategies of the course. The findings suggest that embedding cultural competence education in nursing courses is essential to improving nursing students' perceptions of their cultural care competency. • Growing cultural diversity among immigrants has challenged nursing education. • Cultural care embedded in nursing courses informs students' cultural attitudes. • Cultural care-embedded courses increase perceptions of cultural care competency. • Students appreciated the multiple learning strategies of the cultural instruction.
