Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with disparate health and educational outcomes. The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to determine the relationship between ACEs and academic performance among U.S. children and adolescents. A total of 20 articles were included for a descriptive synthesis and 11 articles were included in the quantitative synthesis. Among the 11 studies, we found a weak, negative correlation between ACEs and academic performance. Further research is needed to explore all the potential adverse exposures that could impact academic outcomes and factors that might mediate the effects of ACEs on academic performance.

Background: Direct-acting oral anticoagulants (DOACs) have become the preferred drugs for managing venous thromboembolism (VTE). Despite their advantages over vitamin K antagonists such as warfarin, their use in obese patients remains controversial with many providers reluctant to switch patients managed on warfarin. Outcome research that opts to increase provider confidence when prescribing DOACs for patients with obesity will be invaluable.Objective: This investigation evaluated whether patients with a body mass index (BMI) 35 kg/m2or greater who were prescribed a DOAC had a higher risk for a recurrent VTE or bleed event relative to warfarin.Methods: The study was conducted in West Virginia which has the highest rate of obesity in the United States.Results: Of the total study population (1633), 2.3% (37) had a recurrent thrombotic event, 5.5% (89) had a major bleed event, and 10.7% (174) had some type of bleeding event. No individual patient characteristic was associated with recurrent thrombosis—including BMI. Older age, antiplatelet use, and taking a medication with a theoretical risk of increasing the effect of DOACs were associated with any and major bleeding events. The use of warfarin was associated with major bleeding events more frequently versus a DOAC. Body mass index was not a predictor for recurrent VTE or any bleed or major bleed events.Conclusions: These findings support the conclusion that DOACs are an appropriate and effective drug class for the management of VTE in patients with obesity.

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have garnered substantial attention for their unique properties, such as high porosity and tunable structures, making them versatile for various applications. This paper constructs photoactive titanium–organic frameworks by combining Ti(IV) clusters and a bipyridine linker. The MOF is synthesized in situthrough imine condensation, resulting in NU-2300. Subsequent ex situnickel salt complexation results in NU-2300-Ni, which is then used for light-mediated carbon–heteroatom cross-couplings. The photophysical properties of the metallaphotocatalyst were investigated by UV–vis and EPR analyses, and both the Ti cluster and the bipyridine linker were found to contribute to successful catalysis, making it a tandem catalyst. The heterogeneous material retained its performance through five cycles of thioetherification. This work contributes not only to MOF synthetic strategies but also to expanding MOF applications as recyclable, tandem metallaphotocatalysts.

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are some of the best materials for energy-efficient separations, like membranes and adsorption processes, due to their nanoporosity and tunability. To tune a MOF for optimum separation of molecules with sub-angstrom differences in size, which is a common challenge in industrial separations, precise control of the local pore environment is required. Here, we explore the concept of “3-dimensional” linkers, i.e., linkers that contain sterically bulky non-planar cores, as a means to attain sub-angstrom control over MOF pore size and to control structural flexibility. In particular, the introduction of 3-dimensional linkers (3DLs) is shown to hinder global breathing transitions in MOFs. Because these linkers occupy a consistent volume regardless of their orientation, they also allow for precise size-based separation of very similar molecules, such as hexane isomers. Furthermore, we discuss the thermal stability of a subset of these materials, characterized through variable temperature X-ray diffraction and porosity measurements.

Hexane isomers play a vital role as feedstocks and fuel additives in the petrochemical industry. However, their similar physical and chemical properties lead to significant challenges in the separation process. Traditional thermal separation techniques are energy-intensive and lead to significant carbon footprint penalties. As such, there is a growing demand for the development of less energy-intensive nonthermal separation methods. Adsorption-based separation methods, such as using solid sorbents or membranes, have emerged as promising alternatives to distillation. Here, we report the successful synthesis of two novel metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), NU-2004 and NU-2005, by incorporating a carborane-based three-dimensional (3D) linker and using aluminum and vanadium nodes, respectively. These MOFs exhibit exceptional thermal stability and structural rigidity compared to other MIL-53 analogues, which is further corroborated using synchrotron studies. Furthermore, the inclusion of the quasi-spherical 3D linker in NU-2004 demonstrates significant advancements in the separation of hexane isomers compared to other MIL MOFs containing two-dimensional (2D) and aliphatic 3D linkers.

Quality assurance (QA) of predoctoral dental student laboratory work is an essential part of the learning process that involves evaluating the student's ability, providing constructive feedback, helping develop the students' ability to self‐assess, and promoting collegiality and communication among students, faculty, and laboratories. Faculty calibration, while often difficult to coordinate, is also necessary to providing consistent student feedback. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether periodic calibration exercises with the fourth‐year dental students and faculty impacted the number of student cases rejected during Quality Assurance evaluation of fixed prosthodontic cases submitted to The Dental College of Georgia laboratory tracking. Findings from this study provided evidence that ongoing calibration did result in a reduced number of incoming QA rejections in all periods reviewed except for one in which there was significant turnover among department faculty affecting QA calibration for that time period.

ABSTRACTRegulating Emotions Like An eXpert (RELAX) is a group-based intervention that targets emotion dysregulation (ED) and interpersonal conflict among adolescents diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This study is a preliminary evaluation of the feasibility, acceptability, and efficacy of RELAX across in-person and telehealth groups, examining differences in treatment outcomes and feedback based on format. Participants included 32 families (18 in-person, 14 telehealth) with adolescents diagnosed with ADHD, ages 11–16. Caregiver-, clinician- and adolescent-report of adolescent ED, adolescent communication, and caregiver-adolescent/family conflict, as well as caregiver self-report of ED and emotion socialization were collected pre- and post-RELAX; caregivers and adolescents completed a feedback survey post-RELAX. Attendance was higher for telehealth (95% vs. 87%), but homework completion was higher for in-person (85% vs. 70%). Caregiver and adolescent feedback indicated very high rates of satisfaction with RELAX, with no significant differences in caregiver satisfaction and minimal differences in adolescent satisfaction between the in-person and telehealth groups. Large improvements were found for caregiver and clinician ratings of adolescent ED (η2 = .18−.48) and family conflict (η2 = .26 and .43), moderate decreases in non-supportive emotion socialization were found (η2 = .11), and small improvements were found for caregiver ED (η2 = .03). Treatment outcomes were similar for in-person and telehealth groups, with some evidence for larger improvement of adolescent ED for telehealth, whereas larger improvement in family conflict emerged for in-person. RELAX was successfully adapted to be administered via telehealth with similar feasibility, acceptability, and efficacy to the in-person intervention. Efforts to continue disseminating and evaluating ED-focused interventions are warranted and imperative.

Racism-related stress frameworks posit that the discriminatory experiences of one’s loved ones may threaten one’s well-being, but relatively few studies have examined how they may impact mental health beyond childhood and adolescence. Using data from the Nashville Stress and Health Study (N= 1,252), the present study assessed the prevalence of vicarious experiences of discrimination among subsamples of Black men (n= 297) and women (n= 330), examined the association between vicarious experiences of discrimination and psychological distress among Black men and women, and evaluated the impact of vicarious discrimination on psychological distress in the context of other stressors. Results suggest that Black women report more vicarious exposure to specific types of discrimination. Furthermore, vicariously experienced discrimination was associated with higher levels of psychological distress among Black women, but not among Black men. Our findings extend the literature on racism-related stress and offer new insights for interventions aimed at reducing racial disparities in mental health.

The 2014–2017 global coral bleaching event caused widespread coral mortality; however, its impact on the capacity for coral reefs to maintain calcium carbonate structures has not been determined. Here, we quantified remotely sensed maximum heat stress during the 2014–2017 bleaching event, census‐based net carbonate budgets from benthic imagery and fish survey data, and net reef calcification from salinity normalized seawater total alkalinity anomalies collected from 2017–2019 for 56 Pacific coral reef sites (Mariana Islands, Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, Pacific Remote Island Areas, and American Samoa). We incorporated the census‐based and chemistry‐based metrics to determine a calcification vulnerability index for each site to maintain calcium carbonate balance to provide accessible information to managers and policy makers. Most coral reef sites likely experienced ecologically severe (79%, n= 44) or significant (9%, n= 7) heat stress during the 2014–2017 coral bleaching event. Census‐based net carbonate budgets (mean ± 95% = 2.1 ± 0.6 kg CaCO3m−2yr−1) were positive for 77% of sites (n= 43), neutral for 16% of sites (n= 9), and negative for 7% of sites (n= 4). Chemistry‐based relative net reef calcification (mean ± 95% = 22 ± 10 μmol kg−1) was positive for 84% of sites (n= 47), neutral for 11% of sites (n= 6), and negative for 5% of sites (n= 3). The calcification vulnerability index suggested the Pacific Ocean reef sites surveyed were of minimal (68%, n= 38) to moderate (32%, n= 18) concern for maintaining calcium carbonate balance following the bleaching event. This suggests that many reefs maintained positive calcium carbonate balance, but that a large number of reefs may be approaching a potential threshold for maintaining their calcium carbonate balance under the climate crisis.

Objective: Disparities in obesity highlight the need for an examination of determinants that may be uniquely experienced by race and sex. An understudied factor is household composition with the potential for variation in its obesogenic impacts. This study examines the association between household composition and body mass index (BMI) among Black, Hispanic, and White adults and determines whether income moderates these associations. Methods: Using cross-sectional data from the 2011–2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, the number of children and adults aged ≥ 60 years in the household were reported among non-Hispanic Black and White adults as well as Hispanic adults aged 20–59 years old. Multivariable linear regressions were used to assess the associations between household composition and BMI with income as a potential moderator. Results: Having multiple school-aged children was associated with higher BMI (β = 1.34, standard error (s.e.) = 0.50) among Hispanic men, while having older adults in the household was associated with lower BMI among Black women (β = − 3.21, s.e. = 1.42). Income moderated the associations between household composition and BMI among Black women and men. There were no associations between household composition and BMI in White women or men. Conclusions: Future studies should further explicate the mechanisms of household composition that uniquely impact obesity outcomes among Black women and men by income. Efforts to address higher BMI among those with more young children in the household should target Hispanic men.

AbstractAcademic integrity policies and processes vary from institution to institution and between countries. The last 30 years has seen increased attention on policies that provide a process focused on educating students and reintegrating those who cheat into their institutions rather than punitive and permanent sanctions, such as expulsion.

Purpose: Recent research suggests the determinants of and links between psychological distress and psychiatric disorder are distinct among Black Americans. Yet, these associations have not been explored among Black women, despite the unique social experiences, risks, and mental health patterns they face. The present study assessed the sociodemographic and psychosocial determinants of distress and disorder and evaluated the distress–disorder association, including whether it was conditional on sociodemographic and psychosocial characteristics among Black women. Methods: Data were from 328 Black women in the Nashville Stress and Health Study, a cross-sectional community epidemiologic survey of Blacks and Whites in Nashville, Tennessee, and was used to assess the correlates of distress (CES-D depressive symptoms scale) and major depressive disorder (MDD; based on the CIDI). Multinomial logistic regression models estimated the extent to which greater distress was associated with higher risk of “chronic” or “resolved MDD”. Results: Stress exposure and marital status were associated with greater distress, while stress exposure and childhood SES were associated with elevated disorder risk. Although increased distress was associated with greater disorder risk, significant interactions indicated these associations depend on differences in age and adult socioeconomic status within this population. Conclusions: This study identifies distinct correlates of distress and disorder and shows that the distress–disorder association varies among subgroups of Black women. Results have important implications for public health research and practice, as they highlight the factors that matter most for the mental health outcomes of Black women.

Emerging evidence suggests that parents engage in discipline practices during emerging adulthood, and the use of physical discipline is associated with negative mental health outcomes for emerging adults. However, it appears that no measure of discipline strategies used in emerging adulthood exists. The current study developed the Domains of Young Adult Discipline Scale (DYADS), a measure of parental discipline during emerging adulthood. After item construction, an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was conducted on a random half of the data (N= 288), followed by a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) on the second random half of the data (N= 304). Results of the CFA supported the factor structure of the EFA (i.e., three-factor structure) and revealed the best fitting model contained 24 items. The DYADS correlated with measures of parenting style and discipline as well as a measure of emerging adult mental health. Implications for future research are discussed.

As most adults with spina bifida are either sexually active or interested in becoming sexually active, providers should understand how spina bifida impacts sexual function and options for treatment.

Racial disparities in obesity are larger between Black and White college graduates compared to disparities among those who did not complete high school. A possible explanation is that Black adults with higher socioeconomic status (SES) experience unique obesogenic determinants. Black adults who have completed a 4-year college degree can report “uplift stress” from providing financial assistance to family members. The aim of this study is to determine whether the association between familial financial assistance and body mass index (BMI) varies among college-educated Black women and men. This study utilized data from an online survey of Qualtrics standing panels including 451 non-Hispanic Black college graduates. Respondents were asked if they had provided or received any monetary gift or financial help from a family member in the past 12 months as well as their height and weight. Using linear regression and multiplicative interaction terms, the association between familial financial assistance and BMI was assessed by sex. Those who reported both giving and receiving familial financial assistance had higher BMI than those who neither gave nor received assistance (β= 2.80, standard error (s.e.) = 1.16). There was a significant interaction such that this association was observed among women only (β= 6.67, s.e. = 2.32). Future studies should seek to understand the gendered impact of familial financial assistance on BMI in college-educated Black women.

The versatility of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) has led to groundbreaking applications in a wide variety of fields, especially in the areas of energy, environment, and sustainability. For example, MOFs can be designed for high uptake of toxic gases and pollutants, such as CO2, NH3, and SO2, but designing a single MOF that shows tangible uptake for all of these gases is challenging due to the differences in the chemical and physical properties of these molecules. To this end, integrating multiple MOFs onto textile fibers and crafting various structures have emerged as pivotal developments, enhancing framework durability and usability. MOF composites prepared on readily available textile fibers offer the flexibility essential for critical applications, including heterogeneous catalysis, chemical sensing, toxic gas adsorption, and drug delivery, while preserving the unique characteristics of MOFs. This study introduces a scalable and adaptable method for seamlessly embedding multiple high-performing MOFs onto a single textile fiber using a dip-coating method. We explored the uptake capacity of these multi-MOF composites for CO2, NH3, and SO2and observed a performance similar to that of traditional powdered materials. Along with harmful gas adsorption, we also have evaluated the permeation and reactivity of these MOF/textile composites toward chemical warfare agents (CWAs) like GD (soman), HD (mustard gas), and VX. In combination, these results demonstrate a fundamental advancement toward establishing a consistent strategy for the hydrolysis of nerve agents in real-world scenarios. This approach can substantially increase the protection toward CWAs and enhance the effectiveness of protective equipment such as fabrics for protective garments. This dip-coating method for the integration of multiple MOFs on a single textile fiber unlocks a wealth of possibilities and paves the way for future innovations in the deployment of MOF-based composites.

Natural bioactives possess a wide range of chemical structures that can exert a plethora of pharmacological and toxicological actions, resulting in neuroprotection or neurotoxicity. These pharmacodynamic properties can positively or negatively impact human and animal global healthcare. Remarkably, Ayurvedic botanical Cannabis has been used worldwide by different ethnicities and religions for spiritual, commercial, recreational, nutraceutical, cosmeceutical, and medicinal purposes for centuries. Cannabis-based congeners have been approved by the United States of America's (USA) Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and other global law agencies for various therapeutic purposes. Surprisingly, the strict laws associated with possessing cannabis products have been mitigated in multiple states in the USA and across the globe for recreational use. This has consequently led to a radical escalation of exposure to cannabis-related substances of abuse. However, there is a lacuna in the literature on the acute and chronic effects of Cannabis and its congeners on various neuropathologies. Moreover, in the post-COVID era, there has been a drastic increase in the incidence and prevalence of numerous neuropathologies, leading to increased morbidity and mortality. There is an impending necessity for a safe, economically viable, multipotent, natural bioactive to prevent and treat various neuropathologies. The ayurvedic herb, Cannabis is one of the oldest botanicals known to humans and has been widely used. However, the comprehensive effect of Cannabis on various neuropathologies is not well established. Hence, this review presents effects of Cannabis on various neuropathologies.

Safe spine surgery is possible during the COVID-19 pandemic. Certain urgent procedures must still be performed during this challenging time to prevent permanent long-term disability or death for patients. Precautions must be taken in the operating room to optimize safety, including the use of personal protective equipment and appropriate room setup and anesthesia and equipment optimization. Evidence-based guidelines to create a safe operative paradigm for use in future viral outbreaks are paramount.

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) make up a class of crystalline, nanoporous materials that are recognized for their tunability. While some MOFs demonstrate flexibility, this characteristic can pose challenges in achieving precise pore control or establishing permanent porosity. Specifically, MIL-88B is notable for its high flexibility, as it is constructed from metal trimer clusters and two-dimensional linkers (2DLs) featuring planar, aromatic cores, allowing significant structural changes. In this study, we synthesized two new MOFs, NU-2010 and NU-2011, which are structurally analogous to MIL-88B but incorporate ditopic three-dimensional linkers (3DLs) with sterically bulky cores and higher symmetry. Our aim was to investigate whether the introduction of 3DLs could mitigate the flexibility observed in MIL-88B. We employed a combination of single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction techniques to assess the flexibility of MIL-88B, NU-2010, and NU-2011 under various conditions, including thermal activation, solvent exchange, and temperature changes. Our findings indicate that incorporating 3DLs significantly reduces the framework flexibility in NU-2010 and NU-2011 relative to MIL-88B.
