Making fresh fruits and vegetables (FFV) more widely available has been a prominent focus of healthy retail interventions and may have an important role in improving food access and diet quality at the population level. 'Healthy retail' interventions in corner/convenience stores (CS) are increasingly being adopted by public health practitioners to address the diet-related risk factors, improve food access at the community level, and change food retail environments. Private sector retailers are integral to the success of public health retailing interventions, making their perspectives and experiences critical. There is a particular need for greater evidence from retailers in settings where evaluations of these interventions have yielded null or mixed results. Through semi-structured interviews with 8 CS retailers (7 from urban settings and 1 from rural) in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, this study aimed to describe experiences and critical factors regarding the feasibility and sustainability of a healthy CS program that was not sustained following the pilot testing phase, with a specific focus on the sale of FFV. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the interview data, which indicated that retailers faced two dominant challenges with selling FFV in CS: both relate to how these stores are embedded in the larger local and global food system. We join others in arguing that efforts and support for retail interventions aiming to increase the availability of FFV in CS need to address the structure and relations of the food system, as an upstream determinant of CS retailer interest and motivation. BACKGROUND: Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are known to cause adverse pulmonary effects, yet paradoxically, the prevalence of e-cigarette use has increased among individuals with chronic lung disease. We assessed the relationship between chronic lung disease and the susceptibility to e-cigarette use in adults and determined if specific behavioral, social, and environmental factors influence this relationship. METHODS: We enrolled adults age ≥ 18 y in Alabama with chronic lung disease from university medical clinics (n = 140) and individuals without chronic lung disease (n = 123, reference group) from January 2020-March 2021. A cross-sectional design was used where we administered questionnaires to collect sociodemographic information and assessed susceptibility to e-cigarette use, exposure to social and environmental factors (ie, advertisements, warning labels, special prices, others' e-cigarette vapors, use of an e-cigarette by others in the home, and visiting a web site or online discussion), and behavioral factors (ie, alcohol and cannabis use). Moderation analyses were conducted to determine if any of these factors would modify the association between chronic lung disease and susceptibility to e-cigarette use. RESULTS: Susceptibility to e-cigarette use was higher among adults without chronic lung disease than among those with chronic lung disease. Noticing e-cigarette warning labels and visiting a web site or online discussion about e-cigarettes were significantly associated with an increased likelihood of susceptibility to using e-cigarettes in both groups. Exposure to e-cigarette vapor from close contacts, special pricing, living with someone who uses e-cigarettes, and cannabis use were significantly associated with an increased likelihood of susceptibility to e-cigarette use in individuals without chronic lung disease. However, our analyses did not indicate a statistically significant interaction between chronic lung disease and any social, environmental, or behavioral factors on susceptibility to e-cigarette use. CONCLUSIONS: Individuals without chronic lung disease were more susceptible to e-cigarette use than those with chronic lung disease. Although the prevalence of some behavioral and environmental factors differed among individuals with and without chronic lung disease, these factors did not moderate the association between chronic lung disease and susceptibility to e-cigarette use. Longitudinal investigations are warranted to better test the temporal relationships between chronic lung disease, substance use, social and environmental factors, and the susceptibility to e-cigarette use among individuals with chronic lung disease to identify prevention strategies for this population. In the context of "new retail", various new retail models have appeared in the market one after another, such as unmanned retail, and unmanned convenience stores, which are based on a model in the unmanned retail industry. At present, unmanned convenience stores still have to deal with the challenges in operations, including difficulty in landing site selection, immature technology, and low public awareness. The most important issue is the supply chain cost control. It seems that operating methods that reduce costs through technical support cannot effectively control their costs. This article not only combines cost analysis methods such as flexible budgeting method to calculate and analyze the supply chain cost of unmanned convenience stores, but also proposes cost control methods from the perspective of supply chain management, and gives suggestions on the future development direction of unmanned convenience stores. This cultural study examines how contradictory yet coherent Hong Kong identities are constructed and solidified through constant interactions between its ethnic community and changing political, economic, and social environments from late colonization to the present. To conduct evidence-based observations and analysis, pineapple bun is selected as the research object. Its historical emergence and modern variations serve as metaphorical representations of Hong Kong vernacular cultures, embodying local people's negotiations with the land and their identifications toward the collective Self. The paper illustrates that different pineapple buns served in bing sutt, cha chaan teng, nouvelle restaurant, convenience store, and home kitchen signify distinct aspects of Hong Kong identities coexisting within contemporary complexities. These binary oppositions harmoniously imprinted in local ethnicity – flexibility and persistence, nativism and globalism, and utilitarian and hedonism – demarcate Hongkongese as a unique community apart from British colonists and mainland Chinese. At cash registers in Japanese supermarkets and convenience stores, one may see clerks wearing "In training" tags on their chest. The tag denotes an apprentice learning the job duties while working on the actual job. This study aimed to clarify the role of nametags from the perspectives of the three types of persons involved with the tags, that is, the persons looking at the clerks wearing them, the clerks wearing them, and the managers requesting the clerks to wear them. The results indicate that the custom of wearing such nametags is related to the rule of affixing beginner's marks to vehicles and is one of the Japanese forms of communication that requires consideration from others. Bundling is an important strategy for online supermarkets to promote sales. A proper bundle can not only bring profits to the retailer, but also can provide convenience to consumers. However, the number of products sold by the online supermarkets are extremely large, and customers may vary at different cities. How to generate bundles from a large number of products and according to the consumption characters of different cities is a major challenge for online supermarkets. In this paper, a product bundling model considering different city levels was proposed. First, the frequent itemset were found based on the analysis of association rules. The sales contribution rate was introduced to identify the profitability of frequent itemset for different city levels, and based on which an optimizing model was formulated to select proper itemset as bundles. The results of numerical experiments show that bundles can be effectively selected across different city levels, and by bundling the income of the seller can be increased. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As countries around the world transition from combustion to electric vehicles (EVs), this transformation process not only presents difficulties for the conventional fuel sector but also opportunities, particularly in terms of the impact on petrol stations. This study examines the impact of EV adoption on petrol stations in Jordan. Through interviews with station owners and analysis of petrol sales and EV data, we investigate how this transition will affect station profitability and future prospects. Our findings suggest that while declining petrol sales pose a challenge, diversification into EV charging services, convenience stores, and other offerings can provide new revenue streams and ensure continued viability. We also identify key factors influencing station adaptation, such as government policies, infrastructure development, and customer preferences. Background: Mobile apps have become a critical channel for retailers to interact with their customers and digitalize shopping behaviors in the customer journey. In the transition of digital transformation, convenience stores have launched mobile apps to interact with and particularly collect data from their customers. It is critical to investigate customer experiences in using mobile apps because it paves the way for successful digital transformation. This paper aims to investigate the customer experiences of convenience stores' mobile apps from the online reviews. Method: This study proposed a mobile apps quality model as the theoretical framework to empirically test the online reviews of mobile apps. Large volumes of online reviews generated by customers provide important strategic values for business and service design for mobile apps. This paper collected 40,521 online reviews of two leading convenience stores in Taiwan and analyzed with text analysis and qualitative analysis. Results: Applying text analysis and qualitative analysis, this paper identified the critical quality attributes of mobile apps of the convenience stores that need to be improved. In addition, software quality is the major issue that 7-11 Open Point needs to improve, followed by service quality and information quality respectively. Software quality is also the major issue that FamilyMart app needs to improve the customer experiences, followed by service quality and information quality. Moreover, customer dissatisfaction primarily resulted from problems in software quality and information quality. On the contrary, convenience, ease of use, and practicability of mobile apps lead to customer satisfaction. Conclusion: The results show that software quality, information quality, and service quality are critical dimensions in affecting customer experiences in using mobile apps. Although different mobile apps may have different priorities of quality attributes that are needed to be improved, these improvements of mobile apps help to enhance customer experiences and accelerate digital transformation of the convenience stores. The spread of COVID-19 has sparked interest in consumer experience research in contactless technologies and related industries in which no human factor is involved during the service process. Despite the many benefits of unmanned convenience stores, consumers must inevitably shoulder the uncertainty that personal privacy information may be exposed through such smart technology. To address this heightened privacy concern, we adopted trust-based privacy protection model within the classic framework of information systems success in this study. To be specific, we explore how the information systems success qualities of unmanned convenience stores affect consumers' trust-based privacy protection, subsequently impacting consumer satisfaction, loyalty, and behavioral intention while considering the moderating effect of gender and emperience. In this study, we used 480 out of 525 responses to conduct path analysis using structural equation model. Our sample is drawn from respondents who have experienced major unmanned convenience stores in China. This study is conduct to evaluate socio-economics and/or demographic attributes of convenience store based on catchment area prediction. In this preliminary analysis, we find that more specific data related to demographics of the population are needed to see the correspondence between the location of the convenience store with the distribution of the population. It also shows that GIS-based approach is a powerful method to collect data, perform spatial analysis, combine and manage both spatial and attributes data, such as finding features inside determinant region. The problem of changing food habits has once again become a major public issue in the past decade in the United States. One of the main strategies developed by food reformers to change popular eating habits is to increase access to fresh food in poor urban areas identified as "food deserts, " in an attempt to address the obesity epidemic and to revitalize the local economy by creating "healthy," "sustainable" environments. Based on a participant observation study in a large city in the Southeastern United States, I will start by discussing two of these initiatives: a farmers' market and a Community Supported Agriculture program. Although both were located in underserved communities, they failed to reach their poor black residents, attracting instead a clientele of white middle class professionals. To account for the urban poor's resistance to alternative food practices, I then turn to the results of an ethnographic study of consumption practices in an inner-city convenience store, where economic constraints and distinction strategies help to shape its customers' tastes for energy-dense, highcalorie foods. While these data are consistent with quantitative studies underlying the importance of economic access over physical access to food, the ethnographic method has the advantage of bringing food consumption back into its social setting, allowing it to reveal its significance in the competition for status and respectability, which take on different meanings in different classes and cultures. This research aims to present a value-based, consumer-centric view of convenience retailer innovativeness. It draws on focus groups undertaken with convenience store consumers in Taiwan. The results show that consumers evaluate the innovativeness of a convenience retailer through not only novel products but also creative services, communications, and store atmosphere. The research concludes that perceived convenience retailer innovativeness (PCRI) can enhance customer loyalty by increasing customers' perceived value in four distinct value dimensions: convenience, emotion, quality, and price. To better understand availability and price of beverages in Hawai'i, the prices of healthy (milk, orange juice, unsweetened tea, unsweetened coffee, diet soda) and unhealthy beverages (regular soda, fruit drink, sports drink, sweetened tea, flavored water) were collected and the beverage prices in lower per capita income areas and higher per capita income areas were compared. Cross-sectional data on prices of healthy and unhealthy beverages were collected from supermarkets, convenience stores, and quick serve restaurants from two lower per capita income areas (Waimanalo and Wai'anae) and two higher per capita income areas (Hawai'i Kai and Manoa) on O'ahu, Hawai'i from May 15 to June 10, 2012. Using composite data from across all areas, there was a significant difference of $0.58 (95% CI 0.46, 0.70) between the healthy beverages' mean price per 20 ounces ($1.76 ± $0.86) and the unhealthy beverages' mean price per 20 ounces ($1.18 ± $0.38) (P <.001). Although there was no statistically significant difference between per capita income areas, the lower per capita income areas' mean price per 20 ounces of healthy beverages was slightly higher and mean price per 20 ounces of unhealthy beverages was slightly lower than the higher per capita income areas. Pricing strategies that enable healthy beverages to be less expensive than unhealthy beverages is one method to increase consumption of healthy beverages and decrease consumption of unhealthy beverages. Reduction in unhealthy beverage consumption is needed to help reduce obesity, especially in the lower per capita income areas that have higher obesity prevalence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: There is a need to better understand the linkages between marine ecosystems and the human communities and economies that depend on these systems. Here those linkages are drawn for the California Current on the US West Coast, by combining a fishery ecosystem model (Atlantis) with an economic model (IO-PAC) that traces how changes in seafood landings impact the broader economy. The potential effects of broad fisheries management options are explored, including status quo management, switching effort from trawl to other gears, and spatial management scenarios. Relative to Status Quo, the other scenarios here involved short-term ex-vessel revenue losses, primarily to the bottom trawl fleet. Other fleets, particularly the fixed gear fleet that uses pots and demersal longlines, gained revenue in some scenarios, though spatial closures of Rockfish Conservation Areas reduced revenue to fixed gear fleets. Processor and wholesaler revenue tracked trends in the bottom trawl fleet, which accounted for 58% of total landings by value. Income impacts (employee compensation and earnings of business owners) on the broader economy mirrored the revenue trends. The long-term forecast (15 years) from the Atlantis ecosystem model predicted substantial stock rebuilding and increases in fleet catch. The 15 year projection of Status Quo suggested an additional ∼$27 million in revenue for the fisheries sectors, and an additional $23 million in income and 385 jobs in the broader economy, roughly a 25% increase. Linking the ecological and economic models here has allowed evaluation of fishery management policies using multiple criteria, and comparison of potential economic and conservation trade-offs that stem from management actions. Abstract: The 1980s and 1990s have been labelled the ‘decades of convenience’. In spite of this, retail research has often indicated that when compared with other shopping motives, consumers assign relatively less importance to the convenience of a retail centre when deciding where to shop. Such counter-intuitive findings could be due to the way in which academics have defined retail centre convenience. This study develops and tests an alternative definition. Comprising 16 attributes, it represents a fourfold increase over any existing definition. Subsequent empirical analysis provides strong support for the alternative definition, with respondents indicating that 14 of the test attributes serve as convenience attributes. The failure of existing definitions to incorporate so many of these attributes is a likely explanation behind the counter-intuitive proposition that convenience often serves as a less-than-salient determinant of retail centre patronage. The article presents the resolution of the case of Kozeyah v. Serpent River First Nation. In the case the plaintiff, an Indian who owned a convenience store and gas station on a reservation claimed that the defendant reduced his allocation of tax free cigarettes and claimed damages against the defendant for breach of fiduciary duty and negligence. The Ontario Superior Court of Justice dismissed the case.
