There are important gaps in the research on youth political action due to a lack of attention to the roles of place and the experiences of young people in rural places. To address these gaps, this article presents findings from intensive interviews with 15 young people (aged between 16 and 29 years) who identified as politically/socially engaged and lived or had recently lived in a rural place in Sweden. Analysis of their responses, based on constructivist-grounded theory, shows that place dimensions shaped three social processes of young people's political action: engaging in politics in (rural) places, finding recognition as political actors in (rural) places and negotiating political belonging in relation to (urban) places. By linking these processes with Agnew's three-dimensional understanding of place, the analysis provides novel insights into how various dimensions of place shape crucial social processes of youth political action. Security is an important concept in -International Relations. In fact, it can be argued that the whole discipline revolves around the security of states, national interests, or of indiuiduals. With the passage of time, the dynamics of security and the traditional notion of security has undergone multiple changes that have helped the concept to evolve. Multiple theories and schools of thought in International Relations have defined and treated security in a different manner. Where some theories preferred state security over the security of individuals, others maintained their focus primarily on individuals. 7he change in the expansion of the concept of security can be attributed to the third great debate in IR which relates to positivism and interpretiuism. This paper aims to elaborate different theoretical paradigms in the light of this debate, using secondary sources of data including books, journal articles, magazine articles, reports, and websites. The paper acts as a one - stop shop for the scholars of IR who seek to understand the notion of security from different paradigms. In doing so, the paper highlights the notion of security represented by the realist school of thought, structural realism, liberalism, the Copenhagen School of security studies, constructiuism, and the Aberystwyth School. While highlighting these concepts, the notions of traditional security and nontraditional security are also explained in the study, further demonstrating the evolution in the concept of security. In 2020, the Centre for Education Statistics and Evaluation (CESE) within the New South Wales (NSW) Department of Education published What Works Best: 2020 Update (WWB2020). Drawing on Michael Apple's simple questions as a theoretical lens, this paper analyses the first two "Themes, Practices, or Strategies" (TPS) of the WWB2020 document - "High Expectations" and "Explicit Instruction" - to determine their suitability for secondary classroom music education. It finds that the NSW Music Years 7-10 syllabus, which rests upon a Deweyan emphasis on experience and constructivism, is congruent with contemporary philosophies of music education - such as those espoused by Reimer, Jorgensen, and Elliott - but epistemologically incompatible with the objectivist, behaviourist/cognitivist WWB2020. This contradiction produces cognitive conflict for Classroom Music Teachers (CMTs) who are susceptible to pressure to conform to the WWB2020 culture of teaching. CMTs are urged not to accept the evidence presented in WWB2020 and subsequently implement the two TPS in their music classrooms. Rather, the paper shows that Explicit Instruction and High Expectations - realised through differentiation - are not "What Work Best" for music education. Instead, it offers a range of alternative pedagogic strategies that are congruent with the ideals of the NSW 7-10 music syllabus and contemporary music education philosophies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

»Kontextural und kontextual - Eine Heuristik der Dritten in Gewaltsequenzen «. This paper highlights the dynamics in sequences of violence using the perspective of communicative constructivism as a theoretical framework. The main focus of this paper is on the role of third parties in violent sequences. Using the example of two smartphone videos that show different types of violence (a brawl in a less institutionalized setting, execution in a military context), the third parties in these violent encounters are analyzed. Considerations from communicative constructivism are pursued to make a distinction between contextuRal and contextual third parties. The former are physically and performatively involved in the sequences of violence while the latter have consequences for the dynamics of violence due to their semantic and symbolic representation. ContextuRal and contextual thirds are to be understood not as static roles but as "modes of action" that have a different influence on the sequences of violence and can be better comprehended in their specific temporal-sequential embeddedness into the trajectories of violence. Therefore, the analyses emphasize that violence can be understood as communicative action in which those involved within the "triad of violence" refer to each other in their interactions. Constructivism is the metaethical position stating that although we cannot have direct access to moral facts, we can still come up with a set of principles that can be justified and that ought to be respected by individuals. The strength of these moral principles derives from the fact that they are the result of a procedure respecting certain desirable conditions. Constructivism concerns the methodology of political philosophy, being preoccupied with the process of generating and justifying moral principles. In this review article I present the main contentions of constructivism (focusing especially on the Kantian constructivism advanced by Rawls and Scanlon), describe its positioning on the realist-antirealist axis, and compare it with its main competitor in the field of metaethical views, intuitionism. I dedicate a separate section to the method of reflective equilibrium, which represents an important part of several metaethical accounts, be they constructivist, realist, or intuitionist. I show how reflective equilibrium represents the main instrument constructivists can employ in order to capture the appeal of relying on intuitions in moral theorizing, without leaning toward intuitionism. Toward the end of the article I present G. A. Cohen's (2003, 2008) criticism of constructivism. I focus on the replies Ronzoni and Valentini (2008), Hall (2013), de Maagt (2014, 2016) and Rossi (2016) give to Cohen, ending with a criticism of my own. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This qualitative study used a constructivist grounded theory framework to examine the experiences of environmental interpreters engaged in mindfulness training and their descriptions of mindfulness, nature connection, and interpretive practice. Although there is a prevalent literature base exploring mindfulness and nature connection, a gap in the literature exists pertaining to mindfulness and environmental interpretation training and practice. Nine environmental interpreters participated in a 4-week mindfulness intervention program and engaged in in-depth conversations regarding their experience with mindfulness and interpretation. Constructivist grounded theory coding and analysis indicated that participants in the study experienced the construct of mindfulness in a variety of ways and perceived its impact on their interpretive practice in the following ways specifically: (a) it enhanced personal experiences of nature, and (b) it created more authentic interpretive experiences for their program attendees. This article examines the moral understanding of Rawls's 'justice as fairness' and the pre-colonial Nguni concept of ubuntu in the search for both areas of convergence and dissonance, and to see what scholars of justice might learn in the process. While Rawls's justice as fairness is the product of a constructivist approach in Western philosophy along the lines of the traditional social contract theory, ubuntu is a philosophy with backgrounds in the communal, ethical practices of some Eastern and Southern African societies. Beyond the juxtaposition arising from differing methodologies, historical or theoretical developments, and jurisprudential applications, our findings demonstrate that both justice as fairness and ubuntu reflect the commonality of shared human conditions and experiences that attempt to answer moral questions arising from the quiddity of persons. This paper defines 'grammatical competence,' 'sociolinguistic competence,' 'discourse competence,' and 'strategic competence.' The various stages of 'communicative competence' and 'strategic competence' are explained based on psychological teaching-learning theories such as 'Behaviourism,' 'Cognitivism,' 'Constructivism,' and 'Social Constructivism.' It points out that 'strategic competence' is based on one's basic 'communicative competence.' It explains the 'strategic competences' that are embedded in Polonius's advice to Laertes and Ophelia in Hamlet. It does not fail to point out human efforts to master 'strategic competence' from the time of antiquity without mastering 'communicative competence,' that is needed to accomplish it. In this context, the paper insists on the point that reading of Shakespearean plays will play a pivotal role in transforming the 'communicative competence' of the students into 'strategic competence.'. In this paper, I argue that Colin McGinn provides an unacceptable account of consciousness due to the inconsistencies between (1) the conjunction of the metaphysical assumptions of his nativism and the epistemic assumptions of his mysterianism and (2) his conception of identity. I also maintain that, although John Searle's social constructivism may provide the most feasible counter-argument to these charges of inconsistency, Searle's position cannot save McGinn's account of consciousness due to the inadequacies of Searle's version of external realism. As I see it, the only means to address the problems in McGinn's and Searle's views is by revising their version of external realism. I demonstrate that this is only possible if they adopt an external realist position that dispenses with direct realism and adopts physicalism. I maintain that this is the only means by which we can prove the existence of consciousness while at the same time accommodating its a priori and a posteriori character. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF SOCIAL-CONSTRUCTIVISTS, THE NORM IS BUILT UP BY INTERACTION OF THE AGENTS. SOCIAL-CONSTRUCTIVISM HAS REMAINED THE DOMINANT THEORY IN RECENT DECADES AND THE ONLY ONE THAT DESERVES TO BE EVALUATED WHEN WE SPEAK OF INTERNATIONAL NORMS IN THE CURRENT SOCIO-POLITICAL CONTEXT. This study informs knowledge management (KM) research assessing the philosophical assumptions and paradigms that have formed around the discipline. Reviewing positivism, critical realism, interpretivism or constructivism, and pragmatism the researcher suggests to draw on constructivism to inform KM theory. Moreover, it is suggested that a mixed methods approach is the most suitable to engage in research on KM so that a flexibility can be maintained that will allow to detect what KM is and how knowledge can be managed. In this article I analyze the China-Russia strategic partnership of cooperation from a constructivist perspective. By employing Wendt's concepts and structures of identity to understand relations between China and Russia, and their relations with other countries, I seek to elucidate the drivers of the current China-Russia partnership and shed light on the reasons why, despite burgeoning ties, the two countries have not established a formal alliance. I argue that both China and Russia are in the process of reconstructing their national identities while also integrating into the international community. There exists an ideational foundation for the China-Russia strategic partnership, but divergent concepts of harmony and honor make China and Russia act differently when interacting with a third party in the international community. I argue that China and Russia are still on the way to forming a shared concept of strategic partnership. This essay compares three ways of approaching the broad comparative question that motivates the collection of case studies presented in this journal issue. What method best explains the evident disposition of many non- and not very democratic regimes to cooperate among themselves to resist pressures for international democratization? The post-Cold War period is the main focus of concern. In addition to explicit strategic antidemocracy alliances, it is important to more tacit and partial forms of cooperation, and diffusion effects. The first approach draws on the comparative politics literature and postulates that such cooperation or collaboration among authoritarian regimes can be derived from shared structural features of this regime type, motivated by the imperative of regime survival (an internal "rational choice" perspective). The second angle derives foreign policy orientations not from domestic factors but from the logic of competition in an anarchical international system (IR "realism"). The third perspective is drawn from the "constructivist" approach to international relations. This produces a less parsimonious, but more encompassing, angle of vision. The essay provides illustrations and points to some limitations of each of these three standpoints. The conclusion is that all three have significant explanatory value; that they can be complementary rather than mutually exclusive; and that the processes we seek to understand are sufficiently heterogeneous and open-ended to require more than one approach. This conclusion also brings into question "binary" assumptions separating the alliance strategies of democracies from those of nondemocracies. In the article, the author discusses the role of LEGO toys in constructivist learning and the infrastructural limits of open play. Also cited are the conduct by The LEGO Group (TLG) of research on LEGO and adult hobbyism, the use of LEGO as a form of expression rather than an educational tool, and the acquisition by TLG of Bricklink.

Culture is a key concept in anthropology, but has also long become integral to how social actors conceive their own identities and group boundaries. In the context of identity politics culture is often understood as existing in more or less closed systems of values, norms, and world views that determine human action. How should anthropologists respond when a concept so central to their own discipline is practically 'naturalised' in public political discourse? How should they react in face of the overwhelming culturalisation of research perspectives in neighbouring disciplines, where culture has become so allencompassing that practically everything becomes culture and the term's analytical value is eroded? Can and should culture be retained and further developed as an analytical category, and if so, how? In what ways can it serve as a concept that facilitates fruitful interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration? This paper discusses these questions by first presenting a brief, highly selective overview of the varied history of the anthropological culture concept, including the moments when it was subject to trenchant critique. Then it considers why anthropology as a discipline should retain culture as a key analytical concept, and what challenges anthropologists face in reformulating the term in a post-essentialist, constructivist manner. The aim of this study is twofold. Firstly, it intends to highlight the value of constructivist insights for religious studies by showing that various forms of approach to issues related to religion are mere constructs. In contrast to this viewpoint, the discipline of religious studies had traditionally sought a higher degree of objectivity in the scientific reflection of religious topics, but that has been a fraught path. Secondly, the example it refers to is worthy in itself. The reception of Judaism in contemporary China is not only an under-investigated topic endowed with a great potential to reveal to what extent the Chinese ordinary man as well as the academic succeed to understand Western thought and to differentiate among the varied cultural traditions generally subsumed by them under the notion Western, but it also shows that the constructivist approaches preserve their validity in non-European contexts as well. Judaism's reception in contemporary China will be pursued on four different levels: popular literature, fake books, articles in the Christian Chinese media and academic productions. The four categories of texts represent four different degrees of comprehension of the object of study, primarily offering information about the worldviews of the authors of the texts. Transformation has come to be a defining characteristic of contemporary societies, while it has rarely been studied in a way that gives acknowledgement to both its societal effects and the experience thereof by the individual. This article discusses a recent study that attempts to do just that. The everyday life of a South African is explored within the context of changes that can be linked, more or less directly, to those that have characterized South Africa as a state since the end of apartheid in 1994. The study strives to avoid the pitfalls associated with either an empirical or solely constructivist appreciation of this phenomenon, but rather represents an integral onto-epistemological framework for the practice of sociological research. The illustrated framework is argued to facilitate an analysis of social reality that encompasses all aspects thereof, from the objectively given to the intersubjectively constructed and subjectively constituted. While not requiring extensive development on the theoretical or methodological level, the possibility of carrying out such an integral study is highlighted as being comfortably within the capabilities of sociology as a discipline. While the article sheds light on the experience of transformation, it is also intended to contribute to the contemporary debate surrounding the current "ontological turn" within the social sciences. This article aims at a confrontation of two approaches to epistemology in order to answer the question posed in its title whether the theory of knowledge should focus on static or dynamic aspects of human cognition. In the first part, the author presents a metascientific understanding of epistemology defined in his own works as an ordered set of investigative perspectives, which practicing researchers have at their disposal when they are interested to attain a specific state of knowledge, or to support their beliefs about the nature of investigative domains with regard to the existence forms and accessibility of investigated objects. And, in the second, the subject matter of a more detailed presentation constitutes a psychophysiological approach to epistemology pertaining to the human organism preoccupied with sensorial and mental activities as a cognizing subject who aims at achieving a certain kind of information about reality. Common for both approaches to epistemology is the attainment of experiential knowledge. However, when the metascientific epistemology refers to a dispositional-perspectivistic state of knowledge acquired in cognition, the attention of the psychophysiological epistemology is paid to cognitive-constructivists activities of human organisms as subject acquiring their knowledge through personal experiences. Despite the complexity of workplace creativity, laboratory or survey-based quantitative research conducted in the positivist tradition supports a trend towards prescriptive 'recipied' lists for stimulating creativity. In contrast, by recognising creativity as a complex multi-level system, we were inspired by ideas from narrative therapy to develop a new narrative inquiry methodology that uses personal storytelling to collaboratively investigate, promote intelligent reflection on, and enhance the creativity process. Our aim was to explore how taking a pragmatic constructivist approach might unfold a new way of eliciting richly descriptive realworld information that exploits local situated knowledge (what we call 'emic creativity') about the individual and group creative processes within a workplace. Using a developmental application of the methodology as a single-level case study on gaming designers in Denmark, we found that the new emic creativity methodology can contribute valuable information about creativity within a particular system. Objective and subjective aspects are both present in each of these entities, as it is sometimes implicitly recognized even by some of the authors that usually underline exclusively the objective or the subjective elements of these entities. Over the previous half-century, the religious field in Germany has undergone extreme change. In particular, Catholicism has increasingly become a part of a traditionally Protestant-dominated mainstream religious sphere. The present essay therefore pleads for an updated approach to analyzing these aspects of Christianity and accurately assessing Catholic influences today. Concepts such as "Catholicism" or "Catholic milieu" have tended to describe developments as a history of deprivation only, while leaving out newer forms of faith. Based on a social-constructivist approach, the essay proposes a concept of "lived religious faith" to gain new insights into religious changes from the 1970s on. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this exploratory paper we propose ‘worldmaking’ as a framework for pluralistic, imaginative scenario development. Our points of departure are the need in scenario practice to embrace uncertainty, discomfort and knowledge gaps, and the connected need to capture and make productive fundamental plurality among understandings of the future. To help respond to these needs, we introduce what Nelson Goodman calls worldmaking. It holds that there is no singular, objective world (or “real reality”), and instead that worlds are multiple, constructed through creative processes instead of given, and always in the process of becoming. We then explore how worldmaking can operationalise discordant pluralism in scenario practice by allowing participants to approach not only the future but also the present in a constructivist and pluralistic fashion; and by extending pluralism to ontological domains. Building on this, we investigate how scenario worldmaking could lead to more imaginative scenarios: worldmaking is framed as a fully creative process which gives participants ontological agency, and it helps make contrasts, tensions and complementarities between worlds productive. We go on to propose questions that can be used to operationalize scenario worldmaking, and conclude with the expected potential and limitations the approach, as well as suggestions for practical experimentation. The article focuses on the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Modernization and Reform Act of 2012 which exempts model aircraft from future FAA rulemaking. It mentions that two competing theories of jurisprudence such as pragmatism theory of Richard Posner and constructivism theory of Ronald Dworkin. It also mentions that the comparison of two theories to evaluate which theory would be preferred for the best intended effect on the model aircraft industry.

With this article, I advance a historicist and relativist feminist philosophy of disability. I argue that Foucault's insights offer the most astute tools with which to engage in this intellectual enterprise. Genealogy, the technique of investigation that Friedrich Nietzsche famously introduced and that Foucault took up and adapted in his own work, demonstrates that Foucault's historicist approach has greater explanatory power and transgressive potential for analyses of disability than his critics in disability studies have thus far recognized. I show how a feminist philosophy of disability that employs Foucault's technique of genealogy avoids ahistorical, teleological, and transcultural assumptions that beleaguer much work in disability studies. The article also situates feminist philosophical work on disability squarely in age-old debates in (Eurocentric) Western philosophy about universalism vs. relativism, materialism vs. idealism, realism vs. nominalism, and freewill vs. determinism, as well as contributes to ongoing discussions in (Western) feminist philosophy and theory about (among other things) essentialism vs. constructivism, identity, race, sexuality, agency, and experience. There is a gap between the academic discourse's acknowledgement of the importance of the question of diverging values in the relations between Russia and the European Union (EU), especially in the light of recent human rights cases, and the ongoing tendency of recent analyses of EU-Russia human rights relations to focus on rationalist cost-benefit accounts which leave out value interpretation issues. I seek to fill this gap by genealogically analyzing the origin of different human rights understandings of Europe and Russia and their constitution of the scope of foreign policy action. The results point to a high divergence of the meaning of human rights between the European Union and Russia as well as a high relevance of this divergence for both parties' foreign action and identity formation.
