Abstract

Ceramic/metal bounds are used in a variety of dental applications, because this way combines the strength of the metallic substrate with the biocompatibility of ceramics and with its optical performance. For the combination of these different materials the Porcelain-Fused to Metal (PFM) technique has been developed as strengthening mechanism for porcelain. Two layers of dental porcelain are fused to a metal casting. The coefficient of thermal expansion of the porcelain must be suitably matched with that of the alloy and the melting range of the alloy must be raised sufficiently above the fusion temperature of the porcelain for a successful enameling operation. This paper is devoted to microstructural characterization of biocompatible ceramic coating, processed in order to obtain interface capable of self-anchoring to metallic substrate. The experimental part of this work comprises a variety of methods (XRD, TEM, EDS) for the microstructural characterization of the samples in order to characterize the ceramic/metal interface.

L?utilit? des porcelaines dentaires (pour les m?thodes de reconstruction) peut ?tre ?tendue ? la technique de la Porcelaine Fondue sur le M?tal (PFM), en tant que m?canisme pour am?liorer la r?sistance de la porcelaine. L??chantillon, objet de cette ?tude, est constitu? d?un substrat d?alliage de palladium mis en ?uvre par moulage et rev?tu de deux couches de c?ramiques fonctionnelles. Le coefficient de dilatation thermique des deux c?ramiques doit ?tre tr?s proche de celui de l?alliage et l?intervalle de fusion de l?alliage de palladium doit ?tre sup?rieur ? la temp?rature de fusion de la porcelaine. Cet article est consacr? ? la caract?risation microstructurale d?un rev?tement c?ramique biocompatible, trait?e afin d'obtenir une interface capable d?assurer un bon ancrage m?canique avec le substrat m?tallique. La partie exp?rimentale comporte une vari?t? des techniques (XRD, TEM, EDS) permettant la caract?risation microstructurale des ?chantillons et plus particuli?rement l'interface c?ramique/m?tal.

Abstract

Structural properties of La2CuO4.1single crystal are studied by high-resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction as a function of temperature and of X-ray fluence. Superstructures with a periodicity 2, along the caxis, due to a 3D long-range oxygen ordering, have been observed. The temperature-dependent study has allowed us to distinguish two order–disorder phase transitions, at 350 and 375 K for two different ordered phases, respectively. After rapid quenching from 380 to 100 K we were able to induce disorder-to-order-like transition because of a 2D rearrangement of the excess oxygen atoms in the temperature range of 130–180 K. The oxygen ordering could also be produced by X-ray beam illumination; a clear signature of X-ray-photo-induced phase transition has been found by placing the sample under high X-ray flux at 300 and 220 K.

Abstract

Abstract:: We report experimental evidence for the phase diagram of doped cuprate superconductors as a function of the micro-strain of the planar Cu-O bond length, measured by Cu K-edge EXAFS, and hole doping . The local lattice distortions are measured by EXAFS and the charge ordering is measured by synchrotron radiation diffuse X-ray diffraction. This phase diagram shows a QCP at P() where for charge-orbital-spin stripes and free carriers co-exist. The superconducting phase occurs in the region of critical fluctuations around this QCP. The function of two variables shows its maximum at the strain QCP. The critical fluctuations near this strain QCP give the self-organization of a metallic superlattice of quantum wires “superstripes" that favors the amplification of the critical temperature.

Abstract

Two kinds of new optically active chelating ligands bearing a chiral sulfinyl functionality, namely the 3,4-bis-(p-tolylsulfinyl)hexanes 4 and the N-mono- and N,N-disubstituted β-p-tolylsulfinyl ethylamines 5 and 2, have been synthesized and their coordination chemistry with Pd(II) and Rh(I) metals has been studied in detail. Complexes formed with ligands 4 featured a homocoordination between the two sulfur donors and the metal atom, in solution as well as in the solid state, as demonstrated by X-ray diffraction of cis-dichloro[3,4-bis-(p-tolylsulfinyl)hexane]palladium(II) ((3R,4R,RS,RS)-7), in which the ligand shows a C2 symmetry. Complexes formed with ligands 2 and 5 showed a heterocoordination of the metal by the sulfur and the nitrogen donors, as confirmed by X-ray diffraction of cis-dichloro[N,N-dimethyl-2-(p-tolylsulfinyl)ethylamine]palladium(II) ((R)-6). All nine complexes 6−11, displaying a monomeric structure, have been synthesized and completely characterized in the solid state (IR, MS-FAB) as well as in solution (1H and 13C NMR, [α]25D).

34. Study of an endemic goiter area in northern Campania

Abstract

The purpose of this paper was the determination, in the endemic goiter area of Teano (Caserta, Italy), of: i) The goiter prevalence in a group of 920 patients who attended the Outpatient Endocrinology Department; ii) The urinary iodine excretion in 150 adults (20–73-year-old) and 502 children (10–16-year- old); iii) The thyroid size in the 502 children; iv) The environmental iodine levels. Out of 920 patients a total of 750 (81.5%) goiters were detected. Out of these 750 cases, 415 (55.3%) were of grades 1b and 2, 335 (44.7%) of grades 3 and 4. A statistically significant association between goiter size and age was found (p < 0.05). Laboratory data were entirely available for 506 goitrous patients. Serum TG levels was increased with goiter size and age, whereas there was a progressive decrease in mean serum TSH levels with increasing goiter size and age. The screening program performed on 502 schoolchildren aged 10 to 16 yr found a 68.3% prevalence of grade 1 goiter and a mean urinary ratio iodine/creatinine of 52 ± 32 (SD) μ/g. A mean urinary ratio iodine/creatinine of 60 ± 27 (SD) μ/g was reported in a sample of 150 adult inhabitants. Iodine measurements in water supplies showed levels equal to or less than 1 μg/l. The area investigated can be identified as a moderate iodine deficient area and classified as grade 1–2 according to the Pan American Health Organization criteria.

Abstract

The in-plane optical conductivity and dc resistivity of La1.875Ba0.125−YSrYCuO4with y= 0.085 was measured from 30 to 20,000 cm−1and from 295 to 8 K. A strong extra-Drude absorption at finite frequency is detected both in the normal and superconducting state, and remains unchanged when the free carriers condensate. The present results confirm and extend recent infrared data on La2−xSrxCuO4.
