This article explores the motivations and decision-making processes of parents who adopt older children from the UK care system. It draws on interview data from parents from 14 adoptive families to consider what influenced their decision to adopt an older child. Data were analysed thematically, and the analysis was theoretically informed by the concept of adoption as a ‘marketplace’. The study shows how prospective adoptive parents can be influenced in their decision-making by the information they have been given or perceive about the state of the adoption marketplace and indicates that making choices and decisions around the characteristics of future children is often an uncomfortable aspect of the process. The participants cited moral reasoning and notions of fate as key factors influencing their decisions. The article concludes by making recommendations for practice.

The functional analysis (FA) methodology was developed to provide an empirical basis for understanding the reinforcers contributing to the maintenance of problem behavior. Previous research has demonstrated that multiple formats have been established to address some areas, such as practicality, efficiency, and safety. We reviewed the research on a new replication and extension of the standard FA format, the interview-informed synthesized contingency analysis (IISCA) and its subsequent treatment. We discuss the efficiency and effectiveness of the IISCA across various populations, settings, topographies of problem behaviors, and maintaining functions across 17 studies. Common treatment trends, novel developments, and other critical intervention components are also reviewed. We provide suggestions for future directions and guidelines for practitioners when considering the use of the IISCA.

This article reports on findings from the Wales Adoption Study which used a sequential, mixed-method design to explore the early support needs and experiences of newly formed adoptive families. Ninety-six adoptive parents completed a questionnaire four months post-placement and a sub-sample of 40 parents was interviewed in-depth five months thereafter. The main support needs of the families fell within five key domains: promoting children's health and development; strengthening family relationships; fostering children's identity; managing contact with birth parents and significant others; and financial and legal assistance.While the age and developmental stage of the child placed for adoption often influenced the nature of the support required across the various domains, the need for some form of support in every family was universal. Most, however, were not facing insurmountable difficulties. Arguably, many of the support needs identified could have been anticipated as they illustrate the complexities of ‘normal’ adoptive family life. The implications for social work practice are discussed.

This article draws on the findings from a national adoption study to examine the characteristics and experiences of children recently placed for adoption. With a focus on relevance to health visiting, it considers the early concerns, support needs and experiences of newly formed adoptive families, and examines the role health visitors play in supporting these families, as part of routine health intervention for children.

Background:The burden of acute stroke alerts on hospital resources and staff have grown with expanding treatment timelines. The purpose of this project is to develop a nurse activated acute stroke process to accurately capture ischemic and hemorrhage stroke amendable for acute treatment with a two level activation model for 0-4 hours (level 1) and 4-24 hours (level 2) from last known well.Methods:Prospective quality improvement data abstracted on patients in a five-hospital regional telestroke network from October 2020 thru June 2021 with the current single level 24-hour stroke symptom protocol. We retrospectively applied our proposed two level activation model to our data to look for accuracy in stroke diagnosis, proportion of stroke mimics, missed stroke interventions, including intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), and telestroke provider time spent. We used standard error of mean (SEM) to measure discrepancy of process.Results:A total of 340 stroke activation were captured. Of those, 54% (183/340) were discharged without a stroke diagnosis, 27% (93/340) ischemic, 14% (48/340) transient ischemic attack, 4% (13/340) ICH, 1% (3/340) subarachnoid hemorrhage, and 34% (117/340) arrived in the level 2 window. We excluded 5 ICH patients due to arriving comatose necessitating emergent imaging outside of stroke alert process. Comparing single activation versus two level activation resulted in a reduction of stroke alerts (117 versus 21), telestroke provider time (2501 minutes versus 713 minutes), increase in accurate stroke diagnosis (46% versus 76%), decrease in stroke mimics (54% versus 29%), with 1 missed ICH and 1 missed thrombectomy (5%). The single activation showed a mean 11.11% and SEM of 0.023 compared to the two level activation mean 1.99% and SEM of 0.006.Conclusion:Two level stroke activation process was validated to reduce stroke mimics, improve accurate stroke diagnoses, maximize resources utilization, and capture 95% of all ischemic strokes with large vessel occlusions, therefore the new process will be implemented within our large telestroke system following staff education.

The article discusses property taxes, marriage, and Florida's Homestead exemption as of January 2012, focusing on the state's family unit requirement of the Homestead exemption, as well as the impact of a marriage on the determination of a family unit. Article VII, Section Six of the Florida Constitution which deals with the Homestead exemption. Several Florida cases on the subject of separate family units are presented, including Judd v. Schooley.

The Equal Opportunities Commission report on initial teacher training in England and Wales (EOC 1989) illustrated that equal opportunities, and specifically gender, occupy only a marginal place on initial teacher education courses. This raises the question of what part recent educational policy plays, or fails to play, in the promotion of equal opportunities and antisexism in the teacher training arena. This paper documents some of the recent policy trends and argues that these serve to discourage rather than encourage positive action.

This paper examines the relationship between citizenship and young peoples' social identities. The concept of social citizenship is explored in the context of contemporary debates about the transition to adult status. In the light of recent calls for an education for citizenship, at both compulsory and post-compulsory levels, the paper makes a timely contribution to the ongoing discussion of what constitutes social citizenship, by whom and to what end. The paper has three main sections. In the first, Marshall's (1950) contribution to our modern-day understanding of citizenship is examined. In the second section the paper particularly addresses the connections between young people, adulthood and citizenship. In the final section attention is turned to the problems of combining citizenship with other, complex, aspects of young peoples' social identities. In doing so the paper offers a critique of the concept of active citizenship.

This paper focuses on the production of ethnographic texts. It explores how claims to authority and authenticity are contested within the ethnographic enterprise and help to shape the finished written product. The paper draws upon fieldwork in an elite occupational setting and argues that in such settings the crafting of ethnographic texts may be particularly problematic. The paper explores the parallels between ethnographic writing and fiction and attempts to make sense of the texts researchers create and the status these texts carry. The paper concludes that the right of the author to construct versions of social reality cannot be divorced from the rights of the researched to impose their own definitions of reality.

This paper explores the relationship between the school and the body. It does so by considering the transfer from primary to secondary school. Analysing children's and young adult's stories about transfer reveals that physical education (PE), and more generally the body, are central to pupils' anticipations and anxieties about the move to secondary school. The paper argues that the fears pupils express about the dangers associated with secondary school PE should be placed within the context of the transition to adulthood. Secondary school PE is an integral part of the status passage to adulthood, during which the recognition of the body as physical, social and sexual is central.
