To investigate the long-term behavioral and neurophysiologic effects of combined time-locked repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and physical therapy (PT) intervention in chronic stroke patients with mild motor disabilities.

Tensegrity structures are interesting elements that can be used to create innovative building components. In this work, the deformation behavior of a new type of tensegrity floor (patent n. 0001426973) was investigated through image analysis and photogrammetry, using stereoscopic algorithms. The main innovation of the proposed tensegrity floor is the structural cooperation between glass tiles and steel components, obtained using suitable adhesive joints. In order to evaluate the deformation of the floor under different loading conditions a non-contact measurement system was developed and validated on a scale prototype of the floor. The used method is a stereoscopic optical technique based on the grid method, the validation was performed comparing the measured displacement with the one measured in the same floor with linear displacement sensors. The stereoscopic images were processed with Matlab®, furthermore, a combination of interpolation algorithms were employed to generate the full-field map of the displacement. Two configurations of the floor (with and without the adhesive joints) and three loading conditions were investigated. The analysis demonstrates that the adhesive joints produce a reduction of the overall deflection of the floor of about 60%, falling within the admissible values established by Italian building code. The measurement system is reasonably accurate and can be used in future applications where linear transducers cannot be installed.

Shape Memory Polymers (SMPs) are materials capable of changing their primary shape to a secondary shape thanks to the so called Shape Memory Effect (SME) phenomenon. The shape-shifting is achieved through the action of an external stimulus, such as heat, electricity, pH, etc. In this paper, experiments on a thermally actuated thin film of a Shape Memory Thermoplastic Polyurethane (SMPU) were performed to calibrate the parameters of a constitutive model which accounts the rubbery/glassy phase transition mechanism behind the shape memory behaviour. In particular, thermomechanical uniaxial tensile tests have been carried out in order to the Young modulus and Poisson’s ratio above/under glass transition temperature and the fixity/recovery ratio. Additionally, the hydraulic bulge test (HBT) in a thermally controlled loading/unloading cycle was used to study the behaviour of the SME at large strains under equi-biaxial stress state. The corresponding outcomes were, therefore, employed to validate the results of the initial calibration by means of a Finite Element (FE) simulation of the HBT.

Optimal T cell activation requires the interactions of co-stimulatory molecules, such as those in the CD28 and B7 protein families. Recently, we described the co-stimulatory properties of the murine ligand to ICOS, which we designated as B7RP-1. Here, we report the co-stimulation of human T cells through the human B7RP-1 and ICOS interaction. This ligand-receptor pair interacts with a K:(D) approximately 33 nM and an off-rate with a t((1/2)) > 10 min. Interestingly, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha differentially regulates the expression of human B7RP-1 on B cells, monocytes and dendritic cells (DC). TNF-alpha enhances B7RP-1 expression on B cells and monocytes, while it inhibits it on DC. The human B7RP-1-Fc protein or cells that express membrane-bound B7RP-1 co-stimulate T cell proliferation in vitro. Specific cytokines, such as IFN-gamma and IL-10, are induced by B7RP-1 co-stimulation. Although IL-2 levels are not significantly increased, B7RP-1 co-stimulation is dependent on IL-2. These experiments define the human ortholog to murine B7RP-1 and characterize its interaction with human ICOS.

Increased susceptibility to mucosal damage is a prominent feature of portal hypertensive gastropathy. Since the portal hypertensive gastric mucosa has extensive microvascular changes, we postulated that the increased sensitivity to mucosal damage could have an ischemic basis. We measured distribution of gastric serosal and mucosal oxygenation in a group of portal hypertensive and sham-operated rats, and then studied the effects of intragastric aspirin. In the basal state, gastric mucosa of portal hypertensive rats had significantly reduced oxygenation compared to controls (24±5 vs 45±7 mm Hg PO2,P < 0.02), while serosal oxygenation was similar between the two groups. Intragastric aspirin produced significantly greater mucosal damage to portal hypertensive rats and mucosal oxygenation was almost one third that of sham-operated controls. Systemic arterial pressures and oxygenation were similar between the two groups. We conclude that there is impairment of gastric mucosal oxygenation and increased mucosal damage by aspirin in portal hypertensive rats compared with sham-operated controls. These results support our hypothesis that the increased sensitivity of the portal hypertensive mucosa to damage is a consequence of impaired mucosal oxygenation.

Several tests based on semen variables have been proposed to predict the fertilization rate in the presence of male factor infertility, but their significance remains unclear. We investigated the utility of a screening test based on sperm survival (SST) to predict the outcome of in-vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles in the presence of male factor infertility. The SST was considered normal when the percentage of motile spermatozoa 24 h after oocyte insemination was > or =50%. The sperm survival test yielded abnormal results in <90% of cycles which were unsuccessful. The sensitivity of the SST was 87% and specificity 65% with a positive predictive value of 90% in the male factor group. We believe that the SST may be a useful predictor of the IVF cycle outcome and we propose its introduction into the routine preliminary evaluation of semen samples in cases of male factor infertility.

We report a case of acute abdomen due to puncture of a dermoid cyst during oocyte aspiration, which required laparotomy. A woman who had undergone an in-vitro fertilization and embryo transfer required hospitalization due to onset of an acute abdomen. An ultrasonographic scan showed a pelvic mass with the features of dermoid cyst. The patient required diagnostic laparotomy which confirmed the presence of a ruptured dermoid cyst with subsequent peritonitis.

Cadmium is accumulated in Acinetobacter lwoffi by an active transport process. Growth in synthetic medium is not affected until cadmium concentrations exceed 0.5 μM. Cd uptake is accompanied by release of inorganic phosphate to the medium. 31P-NMR spectra show that the surface polyphosphate pool disappears preferentially in response to Cd.
