In his 1971 book, Out of the Depths, William Collins, CSS, recounts his long struggle with anxiety and depression. For Collins, as for other American Catholics in the twentieth century, the experience of hopelessness was influenced by religious and medical discourses that shifted in relation to each other over time. Early in the century Catholic ideas of hope were expressed in the precise categories of neo-Scholasticism. By the end of the century there were multiple Catholic approaches to hope. The same time period saw the integration of psychiatry and psychology into mainstream American culture. As these disciplines were defining themselves and striving for recognition from the scientific and medical establishments, the categories used for mental illness were also changing. From nervous problems and neurasthenia early in the century to schizophrenia, anxiety, and then depression, the vocabulary of emotional and mental problems changed as ideas about their nature and causes developed. Collins's narrative of alternating hopelessness and hope gives insight into how his experience was shaped by his suffering, the social expectations he had internalized, and the institutional frameworks he was navigating. The article focuses on the parallels between Tolkien's tale of Beren and Lúthien and the classical myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, highlighting the misconception that Tolkien's happy ending for the story was an original invention. It explores the influence of medieval retellings of the Orpheus myth, such as "Sir Orfeo," on Tolkien's narrative, ultimately suggesting connections between the themes of Tolkien's story and Christian symbolism, particularly the motif of the Harrowing of Hell.

The Internet has become a platform for popularizing traditional religious teachings and rituals, bringing together believers worldwide, and creating a network of religious communities. With the help of the Internet, religious groups and communities can keep in touch with each other, exchange ideas and sermons, and attract new followers. The article is devoted to analysis of the impact of digital technologies on Orthodoxy in Ukraine, particularly on the example of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine. The analysis of this problem is based on considering the general trends of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine's attitude to the implementation of digital technologies, as well as the analysis of individual projects related to the use of digital solutions. The central thesis of the research is that Ukrainian Orthodoxy, in the current challenging conditions, which are caused in particular by the war, strives to find a balance between the tradition, which was formed over many centuries, and innovations, which are generated by the Internet and digital culture and which make it possible to provide communication with the faithful and their support effectively, as well as to realize their mission. The authors present the main discussion about implementing digital technologies and online services into the Church's practice. The great popularity and extraordinary possibilities the Internet offers people in the field of information and communication, have made the Internet the subject of the Church's in-depth reflection as an important tool in broadly understood pastoral activities. This article contains a discussion of the effects of this observation and demonstrates how the Church uses the Internet and all Information and Communications Technology. Finally, we will indicate the positive aspects and difficulties facing the Church now operating in the Digital Age. Research clearly shows that the modern Church must use the Internet if it wants to meet people, be close to them and reach them with information. The Church must so consciously and skillfully - taking into account anthropological conditions and the nature of media, including theological premises. An important conclusion emerging from the research is a decisive "no!" concerning various forms of e-Church. The Church's opening up to ICT does not mean consent to transferring its activities onto the Internet. Ecclesiastical relationships are always interpersonal relationships: human-human and Divine-human. The Church - even a synodal one - is a community of persons, not an online discussion group or followers of the Pope, bishop, other pastor or influencer identifying with the Church. This article focuses on the life and legacy of Reverend Charles Nerinckx (1761-1824), Belgian missionary and priest-founder of the Sisters of Loretto at the Foot of the Cross, on the 200th anniversary of his death. As a fugitive from Napoleonic religious suppression in his native Belgium, where he had been forced into hiding, Nerinckx developed a strong sense of Christian conscience in regard to human suffering. Among his notable contributions, he envisioned a new type of religious community in borderland Kentucky soon after his arrival there in 1805, one that allowed multiple forms of belonging, including an interracial group of oblates and a Black sisterhood. Buried in the Stanford University Archives is an undated anonymous pamphlet entitled "The Legend of Pancho Sanchez," which offers a Catholic critique of the Bracero Program. This article puts "Legend" and its vision of the program in conversation with the church's late 1950s/early-1960s position on agriculture and its longstanding advocacy for family-based, owner-operated farms as the centerpiece of morally healthy agricultural production. I contend that the church's deep commitment to small farms as key to a healthy society shaped its hesitancy to rethink this priority, despite shifting migration patterns and increased prevalence of migrant farmworkers, domestic and non-. "Legend" suggests that official church priority could not see how the structural underpinnings of industrial agriculture affected in interrelated ways domestic farmworkers and Mexican braceros alike, exacerbating the precarity of all farmworkers. This article aims to present the relatively unknown personality of Bohumír (Gottfried) Menzel (1798-1879) and connect his writings to the beginning of the Czech mass immigration to Texas. Adopting the thematic and discourse analyses, we can observe that his letters contain positive information on Texas that coincides with the main concerns of Czech society in the 1840s and early 1850s. Therefore, we can assume that his letters were published by the general Czech press and served as an influence for immigration to Texas. Furthermore, the passenger lists also show us that he probably led one of the first groups of migrants to Texas. The main finding of this article is that Menzel was wrongfully omitted by Czech and American historiography and should be put alongside other persons who influenced Czech mass immigration to Texas, Josef Arnošt Bergmann or Josef Lidumil Lešikar. By comparing two missionary films, the British Livingstone (1925) and the Italian Abuna Messias (1939), this study identifies a striking similarity and some differences between the British and the Italian colonial agendas. These two visual narratives are distant in time and belong to two different imperial histories and imaginations; however, one scene in the earlier British film is reproduced almost identically in the later Italian one. This study argues that the shared content underlines not only the Italian fascist government's political aim to explain colonialism and warfare with the justification of fighting human trafficking, but also the intent to create an image of anti-slavery struggle on the British model. This work sheds new light on how Abuna Messias furthered the role of the Catholic Church and the missionary agenda in Italian fascist colonialism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
