Rotator cuff tears are among the most common orthopaedic injuries. If not treated, they can result in a massive irreparable tear because of tendon retraction and muscle atrophy. Mihata et al. in 2012 described the technique of superior capsular reconstruction (SCR) using fascia lata autograft. This has been considered an acceptable and effective method for treating irreparable massive rotator cuff tears. We describe an arthroscopically assisted superior capsular reconstruction (ASCR) technique using all soft anchors to preserve the bone stock and reduce possible hardware complications. The Furnariidae is a very diverse family of Neotropical passerines in which the role of sexes in nest attendance and the possible existence of sexual dimorphism still remain poorly known for most species. Here, in a study spanning two breeding seasons, we analyzed the sexual dimorphism in morphology and the parental roles during incubation and chick rearing in the Wren-like Rushbird Phleocryptes melanops, a typical furnariid distributed in the southern wetlands of South America. Given previous knowledge of natural history of this family, we expected a slight dimorphism in size and a similar role of the sexes in parental care. Adults were captured and measured, and blood samples taken for molecular sex determination. Males had on average, 10.3%, 10.2%, 5.3%, and 4.4% larger bill lengths, tail lengths, wing chord lengths, and tarsus lengths than females, respectively, whereas no significant sexual differences were found for bill widths and depths. In addition, we found that both parents participated similarly in all reproductive activities during incubation and nestling stages, in line with the general pattern reported in furnariids. Dado el conocimiento previo sobre la historia natural de esta familia, esperamos un leve dimorfismo en tamaño y un rol similar de los sexos en el cuidado parental. Los adultos fueron capturados y medidos, y se les extrajo una muestra de sangre para el sexado molecular. Hallamos que los machos, en promedio, fueron 10,3%, 10,2%, 5,3% y 4,4% más grandes que las hembras en el largo del pico, cola, cuerda de ala y tarso, mientras que el ancho y la profundidad del pico no difirieron. Background: Approximately 85% of the U.S. military active duty population is male and less than 50 years of age, with elevated levels of known risk factors for oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC), including smoking, excessive use of alcohol, and greater numbers of sexual partners, and elevated prevalence of human papilloma virus (HPV). Given the recent rise in incidence of OPSCC related to the HPV, the Department of Defense Serum Repository provides an unparalleled resource for longitudinal studies of OPSCC in the military for the identification of early detection biomarkers. Methods: We identified 175 patients diagnosed with OPSCC with 175 matched healthy controls and retrieved a total of 978 serum samples drawn at the time of diagnosis, 2 and 4 years prior to diagnosis, and 2 years after diagnosis. Following immunoaffinity depletion, serum samples were analyzed by targeted proteomics assays for multiplexed quantification of a panel of 146 candidate protein biomarkers from the curated literature. Results: Using a Random Forest machine learning approach, we derived a 13-protein signature that distinguishes cases versus controls based on longitudinal changes in serum protein concentration. The abundances of each of the 13 proteins remain constant over time in control subjects. The AUC for the derived Random Forest classifier was 0.90. Conclusions: This 13-protein classifier is highly promising for detection of OPSCC prior to overt symptoms. To evaluate the anatomic integrity of rotator cuff repair performed by medialized single row and augmented by a porcine dermal patch, in comparison with a nonaugmented group. We conducted a single-center, prospective, double-blinded, randomized controlled trial. The sample size was predefined, and patients were divided into a study group and a control group, assessed preoperatively and at 1, 3, 6, 12, and 24 months. The EuroQol–visual analog scale; Constant-Murley questionnaire; Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand Score; and Simple Shoulder Test were administered. The humeral-acromial distance was calculated on radiographs. Tendon thickness, tear extension, and tendon signal intensity were all measured on magnetic resonance images (MRIs) along with an evaluation of footprint extension and a classification into one of 4 healing grades—healed, thinned, partially healed, not healed. The study population consisted of 92 patients who were equally randomized into 2 homogenous groups. Sixty-nine patients completed the 24-month follow-up. The study group showed a healing rate of 97.6% compared with 59.5% for the standard repair group. The study group showed better results in terms of repaired tendon thickness and footprint coverage, with a P value <.05, although the tendon density was comparable. The study group showed better strength recovery and functionality with the outcome scores submitted. During the entire study, only 2 patients reported complications, calling for a biopsy during revision surgery. Rotator cuff repairs augmented with a porcine dermal patch resulted in excellent clinical outcomes with a higher healing rate and close-to-normal MRI findings. The technique is safe and effective; in addition, it is reproducible and allows for better outcomes compared with those of standard medialized single-row repairs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The anionic surfactant sodium lauryl ether sulphate (SLES) is the main component of most commercial products used for soil conditioning in the excavation industry, in particular as lubricants for mechanized tunnelling. Its use during the excavation processes can result in either the subsequent possible re-use of the huge amount of soil debris as by-products (e.g. land covering) or its discharge as waste. Currently, there are neither SLES soil threshold limits in European legislation, nor comprehensive studies on the environmental risk for soil ecosystems in these exposure scenarios. In this context, the present paper reviews the available data on the intrinsic characteristics of persistence and the ecotoxicological effects of the anionic surfactant SLES. Although SLES is generally reported to be biodegradable in standard tests, with degradation rates between 7 h and 30 days, depending on the initial conditions, data on its biodegradation in environmental studies are quite scarce. Consequently, assessing SLES biodegradation rates in field conditions is crucial for evaluating if in residual concentrations (typically in the range 40–500 mg/kg in excavated soils) it can or not be a potential hazard for terrestrial and water organisms. Laboratory ecotoxicological tests pointed out detrimental effects of SLES for aquatic organisms, while data on the terrestrial species are rather poor so far and further studies at the expected environmental concentrations are necessary. Finally, the review reports the main analytical methods available for detecting anionic surfactants in solid matrices and the future research needed to improve knowledge on the possible environmental risks posed by the use of SLES in foaming agents for mechanized tunnelling. Bay-capped Wren-Spinetail Spartonoica maluroides (Furnariidae) nests very close to the ground in dense clumps of grasses or sedges and builds both open and enclosed nest. We describe a proportion and characteristics of both types of nests and evaluate some causes that could force the construction of one nest architecture or another. In order to study the causes of this variation, we assessed the variability of nest types (architecture and size) and vegetation structure, and examined their consequences for breeding parameters in a population of Bay-capped Wren-Spinetail breeding in Spartina densiflora saltmarshes located at a coastal lagoon on Atlantic coast in east Argentina. We found that Bay-capped Wren-Spinetail builds nests enclosed and open with similar frequency within the same population and vegetation type. All nests were built with stems and grass leaves of S. densiflora. We found that open nests were built in sites with denser vegetation than enclosed nests. Nesting success and nest survival were not affected by nest architecture and size. The ability to adjust nest structure according to the vegetation density may be a strategy aimed at increasing nest concealment to reduce the temperature inside the nest or to avoid nest depredation. A flexible nest architecture strategy in Bay-capped Wren-spinetail is a possible adaptation to living in simple, yet structurally variable environments such as saltmarshes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The aim of the study was to analyze the prevalence and distribution of ectopic eruption of the permanent maxillary first molar (EEM) in individuals scheduled for orthodontic treatment and to investigate the association of EEM with dental characteristics, maxillary skeletal features, crowding, and other dental anomalies. Methods: A total of 1,317 individuals were included and randomly divided into two groups. The first 265 subjects were included as controls, while the remaining 1,052 subjects included the sample from which the final experimental EEM group was derived. The mesiodistal (M-D) crown width of the deciduous maxillary second molar and permanent maxillary first molar, maxillary arch length (A-PML), maxillomandibular transverse skeletal relationships (anterior and posterior transverse interarch discrepancies, AT1D and PT1D), maxillary and mandibular tooth crowding, and the presence of dental anomalies were recorded for each subject, and the statistical significance of differences in these parameters between the EEM and control groups was determined using independent sample t-tests. Chi-square tests were used to compare the prevalence of other dental anomalies between the two groups. Results: The prevalence of maxillary EEM was 2.5%. The M-D crown widths, AT1D and PT1D, and tooth crowding were significantly greater, while A-PML was significantly smaller, in the EEM group than in the control group. Only two subjects showed an association between EEM and maxillary lateral incisor anomalies, which included agenesis in one and microdontia in the other. In response to the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station in Japan, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and U.S. Department of Energy agreed to jointly sponsor an accident reconstruction study as a means of assessing the severe accident modeling capability of the MELCOR code. Objectives of the project included reconstruction of the accident progressions using computer models and accident data, and validation of the MELCOR code and the Fukushima models against plant data. A MELCOR 2.1 model of the Fukushima Daiichi Unit 3 reactor is developed using plant-specific information and accident-specific boundary conditions, which involve considerable uncertainty due to the inherent nature of severe accidents. Publicly available thermal-hydraulic data and radioactivity release estimates have evolved significantly since the accidents. Such data are expected to continually change as the reactors are decommissioned and more measurements are performed. In response to the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station in Japan, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and U.S. Department of Energy agreed to jointly sponsor an accident reconstruction study as a means of assessing the severe accident modeling capability of the MELCOR code and developing an understanding of the likely accident progression. Objectives of the project included reconstruction of the accident progressions using computer models and accident data, and validation of MELCOR and the Fukushima models against plant data. In this study Sandia National Laboratories developed MELCOR 2.1 models of Fukushima Daiichi Units 1 (1F1), 2, and 3 as well as the Unit 4 spent fuel pool. This paper reports on the analysis of the 1F1 accident. Details are presented on the modeled accident progression, hypothesized mode of failures in the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) and containment pressure boundary, and release of fission products to the environment. The MELCOR-predicted RPV and containment pressure trends compare well with available measured pressures. Conditions leading up to the observed explosion of the reactor building are postulated based on this analysis where drywell head flange leakage is thought to have led to accumulation of flammable gases in the refueling bay. The favorable comparison of the results from the analyses with the data from the plant provides additional confidence in MELCOR to reliably predict real-world accident progression. The article discusses a study which examined the bird assemblage inhabiting the eastern Pampas region, with particular focus on the overall richness and presence of species of conservation concern, season variation in species composition and the importance of Cortaderia selloana habitats for birds. Topics discussed include the highest species richness observed in spring and summer and the identification of nesting species with a peak of reproductive activity during November.

Abstract: Nonlinear behaviour is known to exist in power ultrasonic systems. Multimodal responses, frequency modulations, hysteresis effects, bifurcations and chaos are amongst the nonlinear phenomena detected in tuned devices driven at high power. This paper investigates the effect of a cutting insert on the inherent nonlinear vibration behaviour of an ultrasonic transducer for bone surgery. The mode shape and operating mode of the tuned assembly have been simulated using finite element analysis (FEA) and validated by experimental modal analysis (EMA). The effects of temperature and power on the system nonlinear response characteristics have also been measured using a laser vibrometer (LDV) and a thermal imaging camera. Abstract: In recent years several European and US space projects have been focused on the development of surface rovers for planetary missions, such as ExoMars and Mars Exploration Rovers. The main function of these vehicles consists of moving across planet surfaces, and drilling and retrieving samples for in-situ analysis. Recent research has shown that drilling of rock materials can be achieved using axially oscillating tuned devices which, compared with conventional rotary drills, operate at lower power and highly reduced preload requirements. As a result, at present, ultrasonics is considered a very promising technology for exobiological prospecting. In this work, two novel ultrasonic rock samplers, both operating in a longitudinal-torsional composite mode, are proposed along with the conceptual design of a full coring apparatus, for preload delivery and core removal. To assess the penetration capability of the excited composite vibrations, preliminary drilling trials were conducted. • Vulnerability of rooftop telecommunication towers depending on building collapses. • Introduction of new indexes to quantify resilience. • Network topology has a great impact on functionality after a seismic event. • Throughput alone is not sufficient to evaluate performance; overloads might happen. Telecommunication infrastructures provide essential services to urban communities. During an emergency caused by a seismic event, their functionality is crucial to guarantee communication among users and also facilitate search and rescue operations. In this paper, a methodology to model and quantify the seismic vulnerability and resilience of wireless telecommunication networks is presented. The case study is a virtual city resembling a typical medium-sized European city. Three separate networks managed by as many mobile network operators have been designed out of information gathered from a crowdsourced database and visual satellite inspections. The interdependence with the built environment is taken into account by associating the failure of network components with the collapse of the buildings hosting them. Three vulnerability indexes for the resilience analysis of urban telecommunication networks have been defined considering failed telecommunication towers, throughput, and the number of users per base station. • Rural tourism would lead to a synergistic provision of several ecosystem services. • We studied landscape attributes, behavioral intentions and biodiversity status in farms with and without tourism. • Farmers with tourism have more positive attitudes towards non-cultivated areas conservation. • Tourists prefer environments that also sustain higher bird diversity. • The promotion of rural tourism should also take into account local context limitations. The Pampean agroecosystems are oriented to providing a few Ecosystem Services (ES) with undesired consequences on the environment, particularly the loss of biodiversity and cultural ES. In this context, it is necessary to find ways to make agricultural production compatible with biodiversity conservation through sustainable practices. Rural tourism is a form of productive diversification that generates additional economic income for farmers and may encourage the conservation of uncultivated semi-natural environments. Thus, agroecosystems could provide a greater variety of ES, achieving their multifunctionality. For this, it is necessary to understand the link between land use and biodiversity and the psycho-social factors that stimulate or limit farmers to conserve their field's semi-natural environments. To this end, we conducted a study with three approaches: 1) we evaluated the intentions of rural Pampa's farmers of conserving uncultivated environments through surveys analyzed under the framework of the Theory of Planned Behavior, 2) we explored the preferred environments for recreation through a self-administered survey to rural tourists, and 3) we conducted bird surveys to associate land use with biodiversity. The results showed a trend of greater intention to conserve uncultivated environments in farmers with rural tourism than without rural tourism. These intentions were related to more positive attitudes due to the intrinsic and utilitarian values of conserving uncultivated environments and less identification with agriculture only as a source of economic income. Tourists preferred semi-natural environments for recreation, which also sustain higher bird diversity. Results allowed to detect key aspects to influence farmers to achieve a greater intention to conserve uncultivated environments and manage them to supply multiple ES. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Argentine engineer José Luis Delpini (1897-1964) has nearly but unjustly been forgotten as one of the great structural engineers of the Modern Movement. His innovating spirit and highly individual professional approach resulted in such original construction types as 'preformed' concrete, that were put to practice with great confidence in a man-made future. Despite being well recognized by noted contemporary pioneers like Nervi, Candela and Torroja, Delpini never received the general acknowledgement that they enjoyed. To celebrate this year's centennial of the Argentine Master of Concrete some of the most fascinating of his works are presented in these proceedings by his former student Juan Maria Cardoni. Among them is Buenos Aires' famous La Boca Juniors' stadium of 1932-34, that was consolidated under his direction in the late 1980s. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
