The original ceramics typology developed for Younge/Western Basin Tradition Springwells phase (ca. AD 1160-1420) assemblages included three variants known as Macomb Linear, Macomb Interrupted Linear, and Springwells Net Impressed ceramics. The primary objective of the present work is to make a comparison between the red glossy slip of Urartian pottery (commonly known as Urartian red polished ware) and local clays by conducting a variety of examinations. As a result of these investigations, the authors will suggest the most likely clay sources for ceramics and the slip that may have been used by the Urartian potters. Four samples from Ayanis Fortress have been characterised from the chemical, mineralogical, morphological and petrographic points of view. Scanning electron microscopy, optical microscope, X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive spectrometry, chemical analysis and colour measurement investigations have been carried out on the ceramic body and red glossy slip to determine their characteristics and technological features. In addition, three local clays were characterised by chemical, mineralogical and petrographic analyses. Test pieces made from local raw material were fired in a traditional updraft mud-brick kiln in order to better understand the paste and redslip- making processes of Urartu. The results obtained from the different analyses demonstrate significant similarities between ceramic samples and fired clay test pieces. Coral reefs are rapidly vanishing in the Great Barrier Reef. Design may play a part in coral reef preservation. This paper describes the design process for developing a clay artificial reef inspired by the geometries of theOulophyllia bennettae. The design aims to: 1. provide a structure for the rapid regrowth of a coral reef ecosystem, and, 2. demonstrate how the material clay can guide the development of form. The design process follows a material-centric approach. The paper outlines two manufacturing methods that transfer the digitally generated artificial reef models to the material realm as clay module prototypes. One process uses a robotic arm with a clay-filled syringe, while another process uses a traditional clay extruder. The results describe how the clay reacted to each method and how the design for the artificial reef evolved in response to these observations to develop functional form for an underwater environment.
