An experimental investigation is carried out on the failure mechanism of foam concrete with cold formed steel double C-Channels embedment. The foam concrete is made of cement and fly ash with a compressive strength between 9 and 24 MPa with different densities. Forty-eight tests have been carried out in four groups of specimens with various embedment depths of the steel in the concrete. Four modes of failure are observed, which include the independent failure of the C-Channels with and without a concrete block inside the channel as well as the combined failure of the two channels, and the failure of the extrusion block. A theoretical model has been developed to understand the failure process. The peak compressive force applied onto the C-Channels that causes failure is calculated. It is concluded that the failure involves independent slippage between two C-Channels, and the steel and the foam concrete blocks inside the C-Channels. A method to calculate the peak force is also developed based on the test results. The calculations also show that the shear strength of the foam concrete is about 8% of the compressive strength with α coefficient of 0.4 between the steel and concrete. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the present paper experimental and numerical analysis of hook-ended steel fiber reinforced concrete is carried out. The experimental tests are performed on notched beams loaded in 3-point bending using fiber volume fractions up to 1.5%. The numerical analysis of fiber reinforced concrete beams is performed at meso scale. The concrete is discretized with 3D solid finite elements and microplane model is used as a constitutive law. The fibers are modelled by randomly generated 1D truss finite elements, which are connected with concrete matrix by discrete bond-slip relationship. It is demonstrated that the presented approach, which is based on the modelling of concrete matrix using microplane model, able to realistically replicate experimental results. In all investigated cases failure is due to the pull-out of fibers. It is shown that with increase of volume content of fibers the effective bond strength and slip capacity of fibers decreases. This study conducted two tests on UHPFRC containing reinforcing bars (R-UHPFRC): a pullout test of reinforcing bars embedded in UHPFRC, and a flexural test. Both tests used deformed bars and round bars, and the pullout and flexural behaviors are discussed, with a focus on the differences associated with the type of reinforcing bar used. Furthermore, the influence of bond characteristics on the flexure of R-UHPFRC was examined by parametric analysis. The results showed that bond-slip behavior between the reinforcing bar and the UHPFRC is influenced by the reinforcing bar type and that the influence of bond characteristics appeared in the post-peak behavior of R-UHPFRC under flexure. The effect of bond-slip in the assessment of reinforced concrete structures under static or dynamic cyclic loads with numerical models may be significant. Its relevance is discussed in this paper, by analysis of the correlation of experimental and analytical results. The latter were obtained with a perfect bond-based model and with a fiber-section beam-column model which makes it possible to consider the effect of bond-slip in the vicinity of exterior as well of interior joints of reinforced concrete frame structures. The experimental results consist of a shaking table test of a reinforced concrete frame, with predominant flexural condition, in agreement with the premisses of this research. The model with bond-slip was capable of predicting the structural behaviour in a very satisfactory manner. The paper presents quasi-static numerical simulations of the behaviour of short reinforced concrete beams without shear reinforcement under mixed shear-tension failure using the FEM and four various constitutive continuum models for concrete. First, an isotropic elasto-plastic model with a Drucker-Prager criterion defined in compression and with a Rankine criterion defined in tension was used. Next, an anisotropic smeared crack and isotropic damage model were applied. Finally, an elasto-plastic-damage model was used. To ensure mesh-independent FE results, to describe strain localization in concrete and to capture a deterministic size effect, all models were enhanced in a softening regime by a characteristic length of micro-structure by means of a non-local theory. Bond-slip between concrete and reinforcement was considered. The numerical results were directly compared with the corresponding laboratory tests performed by Walraven and Lehwalter (1994). Abstract: In present study, the stress transfer approach for deformation and cracking analysis of tensile reinforced concrete members is investigated. Stress transfer model which is able to take into account stochastic distribution of mechanical properties of concrete was developed. As numerically obtained results are principally governed by the bond-slip function used, a sensitivity analysis is performed examining the well known bond models and their influence on prediction results of the development of cracks and overall deformation. It has been shown that modeling deformation behavior of cracked reinforced concrete, satisfactory results can be achieved for a large range of possible bond stress-slip relationships. However crack spacing and width predictions are highly sensitive to the assumed bond model. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The objective of this study was to experimentally investigate the bond-related tension stiffening behavior of flexural reinforced concrete (RC) beams made with lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC) under various high-cycle fatigue loading conditions. Based on strain measurements of tensile steel in the RC beams, fatigue-induced degradation of tension stiffening effects was evaluated and was, compared to reinforced normal weight concrete (NWC) beams with equal concrete compressive strengths (40 MPa). According to applied load-mean steel strain relationships, the mean steel strain that developed under loading cycles was divided into elastic and plastic strain components. The experimental results showed that, in the high-cycle fatigue regime, the tension stiffening behavior of LWAC beams was different from that of NWC beams; LWAC beams had a lesser reduction in tension stiffening due to a better bond between steel and concrete. This was reflected in the stability of the elastic mean steel strains and in the higher degree of local plasticity that developed at the primary flexural cracks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

According to the results of 9 circular concrete filled steel tube (CFT) push-out tests, a new theoretical model for average bond stress versus free end slip curve is proposed. The relationship between average bond stress and free end slip is obtained considering some varying influential parameters such as slenderness ratio and diameter-to-thickness ratio. Based on measured steel tube strain and relative slip at different longitudinal positions, the distribution of bond stress and relative slip along the length of steel tube is obtained. An equation for predicting the varying bond-slip relationship along longitudinal length and a position function reflecting the variation are proposed. A new approach for nonlinear finite element analysis of corroded reinforcements in RC structures is elaborated in the article. An algorithmic procedure for producing the tension-stiffening curve of RC elements taking into consideration most of effective parameters, e.g.: the rate of steel bar corrosion, bond- slip behavior, concrete cover and amount of reinforcement, is illustrated. This has been established on both experimental and analytical bases. This algorithm is implemented into a nonlinear finite element analysis program. The abilities of the resulted program have been studied by modeling some experimental specimens showing a reasonable agreement between the analytical and experimental findings. The paper presents quasi-static plane strain FE-simulations of strain localization in reinforced concrete beams without stirrups. The material was modeled with two different isotropic continuum crack models: an elasto-plastic and a damage one. In case of elasto-plasticity, linear Drucker-Prager criterion with a non-associated flow rule was defined in the compressive regime and a Rankine criterion with an associated flow rule was adopted in the tensile regime. In the case of a damage model, the degradation of the material due to micro-cracking was described with a single scalar damage parameter. To ensure the mesh-independence and to capture size effects, both criteria were enhanced in a softening regime by non- local terms. Thus, a characteristic length of micro-structure was included. The effect of a characteristic length, reinforcement ratio, bond-slip stiffness, fracture energy and beam size on strain localization was investigated. Following previous work carried out in Building Research Institute in Japan, finite element analyses of conceptual column designs are performed in this paper. Tile effectiveness of the numerical model is evaluated by experimental tests and parametric studies are conducted to determine influential factors in conceptual column designs. First, three different column designs are analysed: bonded, unbonded, and un-bonded with additional reinforcing bars. The load-displacement curves and cracking patterns in concrete are obtained and compared with experimental ones. The comparisons indicate that the finite element model is able to reflect the experimental results closely. Both numerical and experimental results show that, the introduction of on-bonded zones in a column end can reduce cracking strains, accordingly reduce the stiffness and strength as well; the addition of extra reinforcement in the un- bonded zones can offset the losses of the stiffness and strength. To decide the proper length of the un- bonded zones and the sufficient amount of the additional reinforcing bars, parametric studies are carried out on their influences. It has been found that the stiffness of un-bonded designs slightly decreases with increasing the length of the un-bonded zones and increases with the size of the additional reinforcing bars. To evaluate the strains in a steel bar of a reinforced concrete structure under repeated loads, a mechanical model is proposed. More precisely, a reinforcing bar embedded in a concrete cylinder subjected to uniaxial actions is modelled. In the proposed one-dimensional approach, both the nonlinear fracture mechanics of concrete and the bond-slip between the two materials are taken into account, since they affect the structural response of several reinforced concrete structures in the serviceability conditions and in the ultimate limit state. When cyclic actions are applied and previous cracks close up again, the interaction between the fictitious crack model of concrete in tension and the bond-slip near the crack is investigated. During the unloading phase of each cycle, only through refinement of the damage effects, with regard to the classical bond and cohesive models, can the hysteretic behaviour of the reinforced concrete structures be modelled.
