Magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) are being used in a number of nanotechnological applications, especially biomedical, both in diagnosis and in therapeutics such as hyperthermia agents and as drug nanocarriers for targeted chemotherapy. However, the development of efficient methodologies to produce novel MNPs with the specific requirements needed for biomedical applications is still challenging. In this context, biomimetic approaches taking use of magnetosome proteins expressed as recombinant and/or polyamino acids are becoming of great interest. In fact, these protocols give rise to magnetite nanoparticles of adequate size, magnetic properties and surface functionalization that make them compatible for biomedical applications. In this respect, herein we show for the first time that lysine (Lys), unlike other amino acids like arginine (Arg), is able to exert a control over the size of MNPs produced in water and at room temperature. This control occurs through the stabilization of the magnetite nuclei by the lateral ammonium group of Lys. The strength of such stabilization allows a further release of these previously bonded nuclei to allow the further growth of the larger ones, thus resulting in larger crystals compared to those obtained by using Arg or no amino acids at all. MNPs obtained by the mediation of this amino acid are fairly large (30 nm) while being superparamagnetic at room temperature. They present an isoelectric point of 4, which may allow the coupling/release of these MNPs to other molecules based on electrostatic interaction, a large magnetic moment per particle and high magnetization saturation. This study highlights the effects that biological additives have in the process of magnetite biomineralization and goes along the line of previous reports using magnetosome proteins and polyamino acids.

We present herein the development of a new polycationic molecular receptor, inspired by the ubiquitous cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene)cyclophane (“blue box”). Our analogue, the “white box”, has been easily self-assembled on a preparative scale in water, using a template-assisted process by acyl hydrazone bonding of complementary bis(pyridinium)xylylene tweezers, followed by kinetic trapping of the empty receptor. The obtained macrocycle was found to display a marked pH responsiveness in water, because of an abnormal acidity of the amide protons within its structure. Consequently, and because of the concurrence of rotational isomerism under acidic conditions (fixed at higher pH values), the compound was found to display a dual behavior as a conformationally locked/flexible molecular host, being able to recognize appropriate aromatic substrates, in a lock and key or induced fit fashion, by a conjunction of π–π, C–H···π, and, crucially, the hydrophobic effect.

We report the synthesis and study of the optoelectronic, magnetic, and chiroptical properties of a helically chiral diradicaloid based on dibenzoindeno[2,1-c]fluorene. The molecule shows a small HOMO–LUMO gap and a moderate singlet–triplet gap, which agrees with the results of DFT calculations. The helical structure of the compound, confirmed by X-ray diffraction, is configurationally stable, which allows the isolation of both enantiomers and the evaluation of the chiroptical properties (ECD).

It is estimated that more than 90% of the 5.2 million kilometers of European paved roads and highways are surfaced with asphalt. Also, about 44% of goods are transported by road in the EU; maintaining their condition whilst in transit is crucial for the economy.

New palladium and platinum metallacycles have been synthesized by reaction between a 2,7‐diazapyrenium‐based ligand and PdIIand PtIIcomplexes. The inclusion complexes between the metallacycles and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in CD3NO2and D2O were studied by NMR spectroscopy. The structures of the inclusion complexes of the Pt metallacycle as host with pyrene, phenanthrene, and triphenylene were confirmed by single crystal X‐ray crystallography. The association constants between the Pt metallacycle and the selected PAHs were determined in CH3CN following the characteristic charge‐transfer band displayed in their UV/Vis absorption spectrum. Although in aqueous solution all the complexes showed a 1:1 stoichiometry, in CH3CN the Job plot indicated a 2:1 stoichiometry for complexes with triphenylene and benzo[a]pyrene. The estimated association constants in water correlate with the hydrophobicity of the PAH, indicating that hydrophobic forces play an important role in the complexation process.

New palladium and platinum metallocycles have been synthesized by reacting 4,4′‐bipyridinium‐based ligands with PdIIand PtIIcomplexes. Strict thermodynamic self‐assembly of 1and [M(en)(NO3)2] (M=Pd, Pt) 6 a,bafforded metallocycles 7 a,b. However, the synthesis of 8 a,band 9 a,brequired a self‐assembly process that used sodium p‐phenylenediacetate (12) as a template. Finally, metallocycles 10 a,bwere synthesized under high dilution conditions from ligand 4. The formation of inclusion complexes between metallocycles 7–10and substrates 13and 14were studied by low‐temperature 1H NMR, and the association constants were determined in nitromethane and water by following the characteristic charge‐transfer band that these metallomacrocycles show in their UV‐visible absorption spectra. A clear correlation between the affinity for a substrate and the dimensions of the metallocycle was observed. Metallocycles 8 band 9 bexhibited the highest binding constants in water and nitromethane. This observation is in agreement with the DFT (B3LYP)‐optimized geometries obtained for the different metallomacrocycles, which indicate that only macrocycles 8and 9possess a cavity with a width larger than 3.5 Å. The insertion of hydroquinone or diol 13into the cavity of metallocycle 11 awas confirmed by single‐crystal X‐ray crystallography.

Regulation and maintenance of cell water volume and intracellular pH (pHi) are vital functions that are interdependent; cell volume regulation affects, and is in turn affected by, changes in pHi. Disruption of either function underlies various pathologies. To study the interaction and kinetics of these two mechanisms, we developed and validated a quantitative fluorescence imaging microscopy method to measure simultaneous changes in pHi and volume in single cells loaded with the fluorescent probe BCECF. CWV is measured at the excitation isosbestic wavelength, whereas pHi is determined ratiometrically. The method has a time resolution of <1s and sensitivity to osmotic changes of ∼1%. It can be applied in real time to virtually any cell type attached to a coverslip, independently of cellular shape and geometry. Calibration procedures and algorithms developed to transform fluorescence signals into changes in cell water volume (CWV) and examples of applications are presented.

Presentamos dos casos en los que se observa contraste ecocardiográfico espontáneo, mediante ecocardiografía transtorácica, en el ventrículo izquierdo. Uno es debido a bajo gasto en una paciente con miocardiopatía dilatada. En el otro, la ecogenicidad se debe a un flujo turbulento a través de una prótesis mitral. Describimos las diferentes teorías que tratan de explicar el origen de este «humo».

The complexationand extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with a PtII–diazapyrenium‐based metallacycle is reported by C. Peinador, J. M. Quintela et al. in their Full Paper on page 12373 ff.Single‐crystal X‐ray crystallography confirmed the structures of the complexes. The potential of the designed metallacycle for the selective extraction of PAHs from an organic medium to an aqueous phase was explored by means of competitive extraction experiments.
