CONFIRMATORY factor analysis ,CRONBACH'S alpha ,CONTROL (Psychology) - Abstract
Attention is an important part of cognitive and perceptual processes. Attention includes both external processes related to the environment and internal processes such as heredity. In addition, measuring attention processes, which have two dimensions, top-down and bottom-up, is important in terms of both learning processes and determining some psychopathologies. Based on this, it was aimed to adapt the Attention Style Questionnaire (ASQ) into Turkish in this study. The study group includes of 372 university students. Data collection materials included personal information form, Attention Styles Questionnaire and Control Dimension of Self-regulation Scale. Language validity and criterion-related validity analysis were performed for validity studies. Confirmatory factor analysis and test-retest analysis were utilized for reliability studies. The two-factor structure in the original structure of the scale was confirmed through confirmatory factor analysis results. Furthermore, the ASQ was found to be highly correlated with the Control Dimension of Self-regulation Scale. According to the findings obtained for reliability, Cronbach's alpha coefficients were found as .81 for the cognitive avoidance sub-dimension and .70 for the focusing subdimension. Test-retest correlation coefficients were determined as .76 for the cognitive avoidance subdimension and .75 for the focusing sub-dimension. Research results indicate that Attention Style Questionnaire is a reliable and valid measurement tool in determining the style of the attention to university students in Türkiye. - Abstract
• Significant predictors of Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) included presence of abdominal pain, exposure to meropenem and clindamycin, longer duration of hospital stay and antibiotic treatment. • The new scoring system showed good discrimination, with an AUROC of 0.88. • The optimal cut-off point for the score was 6, with a sensitivity and specificity of 89% and 74%, respectively. This study aimed to determine the predictors of hospital-onset Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) in pediatric patients with antibiotic-associated diarrhea (AAD) and to develop a predictive scoring system to identify at-risk patients. This retrospective case-control study included patients aged ≥2-18 years with AAD who underwent C. difficile polymerase chain reaction testing >3 days after hospital admission. Patients with hospital-onset CDI were selected as cases and matched with the control patients without CDI. Univariate and multivariate logistic regressions were used to determine predictors of CDI and to construct a prediction score for the outcomes of interest. Sixty-five patients with hospital-onset CDI and 130 controls were enrolled. Independent predictors for CDI identified and combined into the prediction score included abdominal pain (adjusted odds ratio [95% confidence interval]: 7.940 [3.254-19.374]), hospitalization for ≥14 days before the onset of diarrhea (3.441 [1.034-11.454]), antibiotic use for ≥10 days before the onset of diarrhea (6.775 [1.882-24.388]), receipt of meropenem (4.001 [1.098-14.577]) and clindamycin (14.842 [4.496-49.000]). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for this score was 0.883. The presented scoring system can be easily applied by clinicians at the bedside to decide which patients with AAD are likely to have CDI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Comic books and graphic novels offer an excellent way to democratize the classroom and improve student learning by giving them the ability to understand social issues and social institutions in a relatable way. This article is a conversation exploring the validity of comics as tools to teach sociology. Specifically, the article does this through examining the effectiveness of comics as a way to analyze gender, the looking glass self, and the sociological imagination and exploring the use of graphic novels to replace traditional texts in the introductory sociology classroom. If one of our disciplinary goals is to change society for the better by boosting the development of sociological imaginations, looking at comics may give us the best format to do so.

MULTISYSTEM inflammatory syndrome in children ,ORAL habits ,ORAL health ,COVID-19 ,MANN Whitney U Test ,ORAL manifestations of general diseases - Abstract
The pathophysiology of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) and associated oral symptoms have not been clarified yet. The aim of the present study was to compare the oral health status of children with MIS-C-associated Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and COVID-19. A total of 54 children with SARS-CoV-2 infection, 23 with MIS-C-associated COVID-19 and 31 with asymptomatic, mild, and moderate COVID-19 were recruited for the present cross-sectional study. Sociodemographic variables, medical examinations, oral hygiene habits, and extraoral and intraoral findings (DMFT/dmft index, OHI scores, and oral mucosal changes) were recorded. The t-test for independent samples and the Mann-Whitney U test were used (p < 0.05). MIS-C was found to be associated with chapped lips (all patients) and oral mucosal changes, including erythema, white lesion, strawberry tongue, and swelling of the gingiva as compared to the COVID-19 group (frequency of more than one mucosal change: 100% vs. 35%) (p < 0.001). Children with MIS-C presented higher DMFT/dmft scores (DMFT/dmft 5.52 ± 3.16 for the MIS-C group vs. 2.26 ± 1.80 for the COVID-19 group) (p < 0.01). Elevated OHI scores were also associated with MIS-C (mean ± SD: 3.06 ± 1.02 (MIS-C) vs. 2.41 ± 0.97 (COVID-19) (p < 0.05). Oral manifestations, mainly strawberry and erythematous tongue, were characteristic features of MIS-C. Prevalence of oral/dental symptoms was elevated in children with MIS-C when compared to COVID-19. Therefore, dental professionals should be aware of the oral manifestations associated with MIS-C, which may have high mortality and morbidity rates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
With the rapid spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) around the globe, concerns about the management of patients with malignancy have risen significantly. This study aimed to investigate the possible impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and prevention policies on the incidence and etiology of febrile neutropenia (FN) episodes in children with acute leukemia. Children who had acute leukemia and were diagnosed as FN in a tertiary center from March 2018 to March 2021 were included in the study. FN episodes were grouped as prepandemic and postpandemic based on the date that pandemic was declared. Relevant data were collected retrospectively. We evaluated 113 FN episodes (75.2% were prepandemic) of 46 patients, a median of 4.7 (2.6 to 12.6) years of age. The number of FN episodes per patient did not differ between prepandemic and postpandemic periods (P=0.476). There was no significant difference among the 2 groups regarding the microbiologic causes, focus of fever, and clinical outcomes in FN episodes. Two of the patients were diagnosed as COVID-19 and recovered without any complications. In conclusion, we showed that the incidence and etiology of FN episodes were similar before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in children with acute leukemia.

- Abstract
Background. The widespread use of biological treatments has increased the frequency of opportunistic infections such as tuberculosis (TB). The primary objective of our study was to determine the rate of tuberculin skin test (TST) conversion during biological therapy. The secondary objective was to monitor the side effects related to isoniazid (INH) prophylaxis, in the selected subgroup. Methods. Children with rheumatologic diseases receiving treatment with tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-a) inhibitors, and tocilizumab and canakinumab were included in the study. If baseline screening was negative, TST was performed annually after initiation of biologic therapy. TST conversion was accepted as an increase of at least 6 mm and becoming positive or an increase of 10 mm or more, even in the absence of positivity. Results. 121 patients (female n: 63, 52%) were included in the study. The mean follow-up period was 26.10±14.8 months. 85 of the patients were using TNF-a inhibitors and 18 tocilizumab, and 18 canakinumab. Forty patients had positive TST before biological agents and received chemoprophylaxis with INH. The rate of TST conversion among the 3 biological agents was not statistically significant (20.4% of TNF-a inhibitors, 25% of canakinumab and 33.3% of tocilizumab users). All patients with LTBI received INH prophylaxis, and none of them had active TB. Conclusions. There was no statistically significant difference among the three biological agents, regarding the seroconversion rates. Patients receiving tocilizumab and canakinumab should also be screened for TB during follow-up. INH related side effects are rare. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Purpose Our aim was to evaluate the performance of clot-based radiomics features (RFs) for predicting first pass effect (FPE) in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS). The secondary purpose was to search for any other variables associated with FPE.Materials and methods Patients who underwent mechanical thrombectomy (MT) for anterior circulation large vessel stroke in a single center were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were divided into two groups: FPE and non-FPE. Two observers extracted RFs from the clot on pretreatment noncontrast computed tomography (NCCT) images. Demographic, clinical, periprocedural, and RFs were compared between the groups and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were constructed. Logistic regression analysis was used to determine the independent predictors of FPE.Results Fifty-two patients (27 female, 25 male; mean age 64.50 ± 15.15) who were treated by stent retrievers as the first option were included in the study. FPE was achieved in 25 patients (25/52, 48.1%). Twelve RFs were significantly different between patients with FPE and non-FPE. The long-run low gray-level emphasis (odds ratio = 44.24, p = 0.003) and the zone percentage (odds ratio = 16.88, p = 0.017) were found as independent predictors of FPE. Female sex and a baseline ASPECT score of >8.5 were the other independent variables to predict FPE. The diagnostic accuracy to predict FPE was observed as 83% when using all independent predictors in our predictive model. Conclusions Clot-based RFs on NCCT may help to estimate the success of the intended outcome of MT in patients with AIS.

- Abstract
Purpose The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and first pass effect (FPE) in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Our secondary goal was to investigate other laboratory, demographic or technical parameters that may be related to FPE and to search for independent predictors of FPE.Materials and methods Patients who underwent mechanical thrombectomy (MT) in our hospital between January 2017 and February 2020 were reviewed. Patients were divided into two groups: FPE and non-FPE. Demographic features, laboratory parameters, pretreatment imaging and clinical features, angiographic and clinical outcomes were recorded and compared between the two groups. Logistic regression analysis was performed to analyze the independent predictors and a predictive model was produced for demonstrating the possibility to achieve FPE.Results The study consisted of 83 patients (37 female, 46 male; mean age 62.69 ± 15.16) who were treated by MT. FPE was achieved in 32 patients (32/83, 38.6%). PLR was higher in the non-FPE group (195.35 ± 101.49) when compared to the FPE group (103.17 ± 37.06). A PLR value of <126.3 and female sex were found as independent predictors of FPE. Our predictive model estimated the chance of FPE as 77.9% in female patients who had PLR values lower than 126.3 while it was 77.1% when only using the PLR cutoff value. Conclusions High levels of PLR were associated with the failure of FPE. High values of PLR may be considered as a negative predictor for FPE achievement prior to MT in patients with AIS.

- Abstract
Background. Catheter-related bloodstream infection (CRBSI) is one of the most common complications of central lines. Data concerning the effectiveness and safety of antibiotic lock therapy (ALT), especially in pediatric hematology and oncology patients, have not yet reached sufficient levels of evidence. We aimed to share our center's experience on ALT in pediatric cancer and to investigate the causes of ALT failure. Methods. All cases with CRBSI and treated with ALT administiration in children with cancer between January 2015 and May 2019 were reviewed. Patients characteristics, laboratory and clinical findings, treatments, outcome of ALT, recurrences and reinfections were recorded. Patients with successful and unsuccessful ALT outcomes were compared in order to identify the risk factors for ALT failure. Results. Sixteen eligible CRBSI treated with adjunctive ALT were identified. The most common pathogens were coagulase negative staphylococci (8/16, 50%). Treatment failure was observed in 31.2% (5/16). Younger age alone was an independent risk factor for treatment failure (0.9 vs 6.8 years, p = 0.038). Recurrence and reinfection rates were 23.1% and 16.7%. Mild bleeding occured in two cases (12.5%) and occlusion causing catheter removal was seen in one (6.3%). Conclusions. ALT was found to be a safe modality with a success rate of 68.8% in children with cancer at our center and younger age was an independent risk factor for treatment failure. Future studies with larger sample sizes are needed to determine the factors affecting the ALT outcome, especially in childhood malignancies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract

- Abstract
Background: The platelet–lymphocyte ratio, which was reported to have a strong relationship with chronic inflammation and thrombosis, is a useful biomarker. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the platelet–lymphocyte ratio, arteriovenous stenosis, and thrombosis in patients with chronic renal failure. Methods: Patients who were referred to our interventional radiology department due to arteriovenous fistula dysfunction from dialysis units between August 2015 and December 2018 were retrospectively reviewed. In the study, 95 patients with arteriovenous fistula access problems were included. Patients were divided into two groups: stenosis (n= 52) and thrombosis (n= 43). Thirty-six subjects with a patent left radiocephalic arteriovenous fistula proven by both color Doppler ultrasonography and clinically were added to the control group. Blood samples were obtained on the same day before the fistulography. Results: Platelet counts, lymphocyte counts, and platelet–lymphocyte ratio were found to be significantly different between the three groups. After the Bonferroni post hoc analysis, there was a significant difference between the stenosis and control group (p= 0.017), and the thrombosis and control group (p< 0.001) in terms of the platelet–lymphocyte ratio. No significant difference for any parameter was found between stenosis and thrombosis group. Conclusion: High levels of the platelet–lymphocyte ratio may be a supportive finding of arteriovenous fistula stenosis and thrombosis and can be taken into consideration during hemodialysis-dependent patients’ follow-up.

Literary intergroup contact—reading about ingroup members’ encounters with outgroup members—is a useful first step toward the reduction of intergroup bias in settings with limited face-to-face intergroup contact, such as ethnically segregated schools. What, however, happens to this bias-reduction potential of interethnic stories in classrooms rife with face-to-face interactions between ethnically diverse students? And does this interaction between literary and face-to-face contact function similarly 1) for ethnic-majority students and ethnic-minority students and 2) for affective and cognitive measures of interethnic bias? A between-subjects experiment was conducted among 977 students in 63 classrooms in a Belgian province with a history of Moroccan migration. Half of the classes read from a ‘white-Belgian-majority’ book (control group), the others from a ‘Moroccan-Belgian’ book (literary contact group). Multilevel regression analyses indicated two opposing trends: 1) more face-to-face contact with Moroccan classmates strengthened the effect of literary interethnic contact on self-identified Belgian students’ attitude toward Moroccans, but 2) more face-to-face contact with Belgian-majority classmates reduced the effect of literary interethnic contact on the attitude toward Belgians of self-identified non-Belgian students. Moreover, the Moroccan-Belgian book was associated with a lesser awareness of discrimination against Moroccan youngsters for students who did not identify as Belgian in classes with few students of Moroccan descent, and for students who felt (very) Belgian in classes with relatively many students of Moroccan descent. The quality of face-to-face intergroup contact is offered as a post-hoc explanation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Questions about the origin of the adsorption/desorption hysteresis in mesoporous materials are as old as sorption experiments themselves. The historical conception that underlines most existing methods to extract pore size distributions from sorption data assumes that adsorption is a metastable process and that desorption takes place at thermodynamic equilibrium. In this work, we measure nitrogen and argon sorption on a series of 14 SBA-15 ordered mesoporous silicas and use small-angle X-ray scattering to independently determine their pore sizes. We find that capillary condensation systematically occurs close to thermodynamic equilibrium according to a Derjaguin–Broekhoff–de Boer calculation. Our analysis suggests that many earlier works have significantly underestimated the actual pore size in SBA-15 materials. It also highlights the critical role of the reference isotherm used to calibrate the fluid–solid interaction in the models.

- Abstract
Rhinoliths are rare foreign bodies of the nose formed by in situ mineralization of endogenous or exogenous foreign material. They are often asymptomatic but may have various clinical presentations, with purulent rhinorrhea and nasal obstruction being the most common. They may go unnoticed for a long period and be diagnosed accidentally during a routine examination. We report a 6.5-year-old girl with rhinolithiasis complicated with sinusitis, frontal osteomyelitis and epidural abscess; she had a history dating back four years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Rotavirus is an important morbidity and mortality agent among previously healthy infants. Rotavirus gastroenteritis (RG) causes severe fluid and electrolyte imbalance and development of fatal complications during course of the disease, if untreated. Although there are few case reports in the literature regarding septicemia after RG, it is one of the most important complications of the disease. The main reason of septicemia is unknown but it can be associated with severe consequences such as septic shock, endocarditis, and even death. If complications are taken into consideration on the course of disease, morbidity and mortality can be reduced. Herein, we evaluated the clinical characteristics, incidence and types of the complications during RG in this retrospective study. We evaluated a total of 276 patients (164 male, 112 female) diagnosed with RG between January 2006 and February 2013 at the department of Pediatric Infectious Disease. Male to female ratio was 1.5 and the median age at admission was 12 months (1-102 months). None of the patients had a history of Rotavirus immunization. While overall complication rate was 44.2%, the most common complication related RG was electrolyte imbalance and the second common complication was septicemia (32.6% and 6.5%, respectively). Klebsiella, E. coli and Candida species were the most common isolated microorganisms from the blood cultures. Rotavirus gastroenteritis is still an important cause of morbidity in children which can cause serious complications such as sepsis. Lack of rotavirus vaccine in our national immunization program might contribute to the related complications and prolonged hospitalization, health care expenses and family work loss, as well. - Abstract
The applicability of different photocatalytic systems for the treatment of pharmaceuticals in water was investigated. Slurry (UV-A/TiO2(s) and UV-A/TiO2(s)/H2O2) and immobilized (UV-A/TiO2(i)/H2O2) processes were compared regarding the removal of diclofenac (DCF) and total organic content, as well as the improvements in biodegradability and toxicity. The applied response surface modeling revealed the significance of TiO2dosage and concentration of H2O2, while pH was less influential within the studied range. Although UV-A/TiO2(i)/H2O2was somewhat less effective in comparison with UV-A/TiO2(s)/H2O2process (88.8% and 99.1% of DCF removal, respectively), the immobilized system enabled photocatalyst reuse. In comparison with air dried and thermally reactivated, chemically reactivated photocatalyst provided better performance through four consecutive runs.

- Abstract
The Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine is used against tuberculosis. According to the vaccination program in Turkey, DaBT-Hib-IPV (diphtheriapertussis [acellular]-tetanus-haemophilus influenza type b-inactive polio vaccine), PVC13 (pneumoccocal conjugate vaccine) and BCG vaccines are given simultaneously to all 2-months-old infants, using different administration techniques. We report a 2-month-old infant who received an overdose and intramuscular BCG vaccine instead of DaBT-Hib-IPV. The patient was treated with isoniazid for six months and developed no complications during a oneyear follow-up period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Summary Currently, tuberculosis remains a major public health problem worldwide. Peritoneal tuberculosis occurs in approximately 1% of all of tuberculosis cases and is rarely observed in children. Diagnosis and treatment delays caused by mimicking many other intra-abdominal diseases can lead to increases in morbidity and mortality. Here, we present a case of a four-year-old child with tuberculosis peritonitis who was diagnosed by laparoscopic biopsy and histopathological examination and recovered with antituberculosis therapy. Peritoneal tuberculosis should be considered in younger patients and adults with fever, abdominal pain and weight loss in endemic areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Brucellosis is a systemic infectious disease that leads to various clinical pictures and is still a significant health problem in Turkey. In this study, 52 pediatric patients diagnosed with brucellosis between January 2008 and December 2013 were examined. Clinical and laboratory findings, response to treatment, prognosis and complications were evaluated. Diagnosis of brucellosis was made based on a clinical picture compatible with the disease, together with standard tube agglutination test (SAT) positivity (1/160 or higer titer) or isolation of Brucella spp. in a sterile body fluid culture. The cases comprised 10 females and 42 males. In 75% of cases, there was a history of consumption of unpasteurized milk or dairy products. The most commonly seen symptoms and findings were fever (75%), arthralgia (54%), fatigue (19%), splenomegaly (44%), hepatomegaly (42%) and arthritis (19%). Atypical presentations were seen in one case of epidydymo-orchitis and three cases of bleeding of the nose and gums. In the laboratory examinations, anemia was determined in 56% of cases, leukopenia in 40% and thrombocytopenia in 27%. In blood cultures taken from 41 patients, Brucella spp. were isolated in 23 (56.1%). All patients recovered, and sequelae were seen only in a patient with osteoarthritis. In conclusion, although brucellosis leads to many different clinical pictures, a very good response to treatment can be obtained. If effective treatment cannot be implemented in time, the disease may become chronic, and complications and relapses may be encountered. Therefore, early diagnosis and treatment is of great importance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
AbstractThe aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of prophylactic trimethoprimsulfamethoxazole (TMP/SMZ), cefprozil and cephadroxil treatments in children who have recurrent urinary tract infection, but no urinary tract pathology. After acute urinary tract infections (UTIs) were treated, the patients were divided into 3 groupsrandomly and TMP/SMZ was given to 21 patients, cephadroxil was given to 25 patients and cefprozil was given to 34 patients for 3 months—one dose at night. All patients were followed for 6 months following prophylaxis. The frequency of symptomatic UTIs among groups during prophylaxis was not statistically different, however the number of symptomatic UTIs in the cephadroxil group was lower than the other groups. Asymptomatic bacteriuria episodes were detected in TMP/SMZ and cefprozil groups, whereas no asymptomatic bacteriuria episodes were seen in the cephadroxil group. The number of patients with symptomatic UTI during the follow-up period was not different between groups, however all the asymptomatic bacteriuria episodes were encountered in the cefprozil group. In conclusion, in this study cephadroxil was found to be slightly superior to TMP/SMZ and cefprozil in preventing asymptomatic bacteriuria episodes and symptomatic UTIs in children with recurrent UTI and normal urinary tract system.

- Abstract
ABSTRACTThis is an observational epidemiological study to describe causes of bacterial meningitis among persons between 1 month and 18 y of age who are hospitalized with suspected bacterial meningitis in 7 Turkish regions. covering 32% of the entire population of Turkey. We present here the results from 2013 and 2014. A clinical case with meningitis was defined according to followings: any sign of meningitis including fever, vomiting, headache, and meningeal irritation in children above one year of age and fever without any documented source, impaired consciousness, prostration and seizures in those < 1 y of age. Single tube multiplex PCR assay was performed for the simultaneous identification of bacterial agents. The specific gene targets were ctrA, bex, and plyfor N. meningitidis, Hib, and S. pneumoniae, respectively. PCR positive samples were recorded as laboratory-confirmed acute bacterial meningitis. A total of 665 children were hospitalized for suspected acute meningitis. The annual incidences of acute laboratory-confirmed bacterial meningitis were 0.3 cases / 100,000 population in 2013 and 0.9 cases/100,000 in 2014. Of the 94 diagnosed cases of bacterial meningitis by PCR, 85 (90.4%) were meningococcal and 9 (9.6%) were pneumococcal. Hib was not detected in any of the patients. Among meningococcal meningitis, cases of serogroup Y, A, B and W-135 were 2.4% (n = 2), 3.5% (n = 3), 32.9% (n = 28), and 42.4% (n = 36). No serogroup C was detected among meningococcal cases. Successful vaccination policies for protection from bacterial meningitis are dependent on accurate determination of the etiology of bacterial meningitis. Additionally, the epidemiology of meningococcal disease is dynamic and close monitoring of serogroup distribution is comprehensively needed to assess the benefit of adding meningococcal vaccines to the routine immunization program.

- Abstract
X-linked intellectual disability (XLID) is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous disorder. During the past two decades in excess of 100 X-chromosome ID genes have been identified. Yet, a large number of families mapping to the X-chromosome remained unresolved suggesting that more XLID genes or loci are yet to be identified. Here, we have investigated 405 unresolved families with XLID. We employed massively parallel sequencing of all X-chromosome exons in the index males. The majority of these males were previously tested negative for copy number variations and for mutations in a subset of known XLID genes by Sanger sequencing. In total, 745 X-chromosomal genes were screened. After stringent filtering, a total of 1297 non-recurrent exonic variants remained for prioritization. Co-segregation analysis of potential clinically relevant changes revealed that 80 families (20%) carried pathogenic variants in established XLID genes. In 19 families, we detected likely causative protein truncating and missense variants in 7 novel and validated XLID genes (CLCN4, CNKSR2, FRMPD4, KLHL15, LAS1L, RLIM and USP27X) and potentially deleterious variants in 2 novel candidate XLID genes (CDK16 and TAF1). We show that the CLCN4 and CNKSR2 variants impair protein functions as indicated by electrophysiological studies and altered differentiation of cultured primary neurons from Clcn4−/−mice or after mRNA knock-down. The newly identified and candidate XLID proteins belong to pathways and networks with established roles in cognitive function and intellectual disability in particular. We suggest that systematic sequencing of all X-chromosomal genes in a cohort of patients with genetic evidence for X-chromosome locus involvement may resolve up to 58% of Fragile X-negative cases.

- Abstract
We aimed in this study to present the clinical findings in children with iliopsoas abscess (IPA) and to discuss the diagnosis and treatment. The files of five patients, hospitalized between August 2011 and June 2013 and monitored with a diagnosis of IPA, were reviewed retrospectively. Demographic characteristics, symptoms and signs, laboratory examinations, and diagnostic and treatment methods of the cases were evaluated. Two of the cases were females and three were males, and their ages ranged from 10 to 15 years. Before the diagnosis, the duration of symptoms in patients ranged from five days to one year. The primary symptoms included fever and difficulty in walking. One patient presented with septic shock and had a history of trauma as a predisposing factor. All patients except one had a higher erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP) value. Psoas abscess was demonstrated by ultrasonography (USG), except in one patient. Four patients underwent percutaneous drainage of the abscess. The isolated microorganisms included Staphylococcus aureus, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and Enterococcus faecalis. All the cases recovered without sequelae. Diagnosis of IPA in children is difficult, and many physicians are usually consulted before any diagnosis is made. IPA should be considered in the differential diagnosis in patients presenting with complaints of lower back, hip, groin and leg pain and difficulty in walking. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Pertussis is one of the leading causes of death that can be prevented by vaccination. More than 600,000 deaths from pertussis occur annually, with a disproportionate number appearing in unvaccinated infants. Pertussis is particularly troublesome because it does not necessarily present itself in its commonly known classical stages. Therefore, in very young and non-immunized children, the disease may have a fulminant process characterized by severe leukocytosis, neurologic involvement and serious cardiopulmonary failure that can be accompanied by pulmonary hypertension, persistent hypoxia and death. This article describes two infants with fulminant pertussis; they were admitted for acute respiratory failure and severe leukocytosis and ultimately died from multi-organ failure. - Abstract
In this study, we aimed to investigate anti-pertussis immunoglobulin (Ig) G antibodies in the serum of children in our region vaccinated against pertussis with four doses. Between August 2008-2009, antibody levels to Bordetella pertussis (B. pertussis) antigens were studied in 385 serum samples from healthy children aged 1.5-18 years (y) vaccinated against pertussis in Samsun, Turkey. The study population was divided into six groups according to ages: 1.5-3 y; 4-5 y; 6-8 y; 10-12 y; 13-15 y; and 16-18 y. IgG antibodies to B. pertussis antigens were measured with a commercial ELISA kit. Mean age of the children was 9.6 ± 5.3 y. Anti-pertussis IgG titers were positive in 48.3% of the cases. The lowest positivity rate was determined in the 4-5 y age group (28.1%) and the highest rate in the 16-18 y age group (64.2%). Geometric mean titer of anti-pertussis antibodies was 39.2 IU/ml, and again the lowest value was obtained in the 4-5 y age group (23.3 IU/ml) and the highest in the 16-18 y age group (51.4 IU/ml). The antibody levels to B. pertussis antigens significantly decrease 4-6 years after vaccination and again increase in school children, possibly due to natural infection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the complications, financial burden and mortality caused by chickenpox using the data of Ankara, Turkey in the pre-vaccination period. The study was conducted as a retrospective sectional study. Of the 65 patients admitted to our hospital, 34 (52.3%) had been previously healthy, 10 (15.4%) had previous chronic disease and 21 (32.3%) were immunocompromised. The most common complications of chickenpox in those patient groups were skin and soft tissue infections (41.2%), hematological complications (50%) and gastrointestinal complications (38.1%), respectively. We found 10.6/100,000 and 8.7/100,000 rates of hospitalization due to chickenpox in Ankara for all children and for previously healthy children, respectively. The chickenpox-related mortality rate for the 0-17 age group was 3.03/1,000,000 in Ankara. In conclusion, we feel that a national vaccination program for chickenpox will lead to a significant decrease in the overall cost to our country. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The aims of the study were to examine the distribution of Candida spp. isolated from sterile body sites, the antifungal susceptibility of the isolates to amphotericin B, fluconazole, voriconazole, and caspofungin, and factors affecting mortality with invasive Candida infections in children. Thirty-five children with invasive candidiasis between January 2004 and January 2008 were evaluated retrospectively. The antifungal susceptibility of isolated Candida species was studied by Etest. Of the invasive Candida infections, 65.7% were due to C. albicans. The second most common isolated species was C. parapsilosis (11.4%). The rates of resistance to fluconazole, amphotericin B and voriconazole were 8.5%, 2.8% and 5.7%, respectively. Caspofungin was the most effective antifungal agent. 22.8% of the patients died in the first 30 days. In univariate analyses, increased mortality was associated with stay in the intensive care unit, the presence of central venous catheter (CVC), failure to remove CVC, and mechanical ventilation. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples were obtained prospectively from children from 1 month to ≤ 18 years of age hospitalized with suspected meningitis, in order to determine the etiology of meningitis in Turkey. DNA evidence of Neisseria meningitidis(N. meningitidis), Streptococcus pneumoniae(S. pneumoniae), and Hemophilus influenzaetype b (Hib) was detected using multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR). In total, 1452 CSF samples were evaluated and bacterial etiology was determined in 645 (44.4%) cases between 2005 and 2012; N. meningitidiswas detected in 333 (51.6%), S. pneumoniaein 195 (30.2%), and Hib in 117 (18.1%) of the PCR positive samples. Of the 333 N. meningitidispositive samples 127 (38.1%) were identified as serogroup W-135, 87 (26.1%) serogroup B, 28 (8.4%) serogroup A and 3 (0.9%) serogroup Y; 88 (26.4%) were non-groupable. As vaccines against the most frequent bacterial isolates in this study are available and licensed, these results highlight the need for broad based protection against meningococcal disease in Turkey.
