- Abstract
This study was designed to determine the access to and utilization of online databases by postgraduate students of the faculties of education of the six foremost universities in Nigeria. The study sought to ascertain the online databases accessed by the most of the students, factors influencing regularity of access and constraints to access regular access to the databases. A total of 365 postgraduate students were randomly drawn from the six universities by proportional allocation for the study. Questionnaire was used to obtain relevant data which were analyzed using multiple responses and binary logistic regression. The most accessed online databases were Google Scholar, ResearchGate, JSTOR, Science DOAJ and EBSCOHost, motivated by free access and relevance to research interests. The documents were mainly used for postgraduate dissertation/thesis and assignments. Sex, degree in-view, free access, finance, personal laptop and Smartphone, and helpfulness of research materials significantly influenced regularity of access. The males are 0.963 times more likely to access online databases regularly than the females while the PhD students are 1.041 times more likely to access online databases more regularly than the other postgraduate categories. It is recommended that the universities should subscribe to notable online databases and improve on the quality of institution-based internet facility to boost access to and of online databases. - Abstract
The tensile response and the fatigue behavior of age-hardenable aluminum alloys are strongly influenced by factors like the size, spacing and volume fraction of strengthening precipitates. Previous researches have shown that the interrupted aging (T6I4) could provide an improved combination of mechanical properties for some alloys. In this study, the tensile properties and high-cycle fatigue behavior of two tempers of AA7050 alloy (the commercial T7451 and the interrupted aging T6I4) were investigated. Transmission electron microscopy analyses of strengthening precipitates were performed, and the results showed that AA7050-T6I4 had a higher volume fraction of strengthening precipitates with smaller size. This microstructural feature was responsible by the higher ductility and toughness shown by T6I4 temper condition while maintaining yield stress and ultimate tensile strength similar to T7451. The smooth samples rotating bending fatigue curves of both material conditions were similar. Nevertheless, the interrupted aging leads to improved notched fatigue resistance and hence lower notch sensitivity. These results were related to the higher activity of screw dislocations and improved dislocation pinning effect during deformation promoted by T6I4 temper.

- Abstract
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has changed the global workloads and general well-being of employees, especially in the university system. The object of this study is to evaluate the mental health and effect of increase in workload on the general well-being of the administrative staff of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, on the resumption of academic activities after the lockdown due to COVID-19. A total of 73 randomly selected administrative staff were involved in the study. Three sets of instruments, the demographic questionnaire, National Aeronautics and Space Administration-Task Load Index, and General Health Questionnaire, were used to obtain information on the demographic characteristics, workload, and level of mental disorder among the respondents due to COVID-19. The generalized linear regression model, 1-way analysis of variance, independent samples ttest, and contingency coefficient were used to analyze the data. The results revealed that high workload is significantly associated with high risk of mental and general health disorders among the respondents. The married, divorced, widowed, older, and females staff with >2 children are the most vulnerable to mental disorder, physical workload, frustration, and general health challenges. The younger staff, those with at most 2 children, and those who are still single experience lower mental and general health disorder and are more resilient. Significant and comprehensive health and administrative support should be provided for the overall well-being of the staff.

- Abstract
Summary: Background: Rhinoplasty sequelae can be difficult to treat, especially in patients with thin skin. Autologous fat grafting is already used in numerous applications in plastic surgery. However, its use in the nasal region remains relatively uncommon. Given its volumetric qualities and its action on cutaneous trophicity, adipose tissue can be considered the reference product for filling. Methods: From 2006 to 2012, 20 patients were treated by autologous fat injections according to the Coleman technique in order to correct rhinoplasty sequelae. The procedures were performed under local or general anaesthesia. The quantity of adipose tissue injected ranged from 1 to 6 cc depending on the size of the deformation and the zone being injected: dorsum irregularities, inverted V deformations, visible lateral osteotomies and saddle nose deformity. Results: Of the 20 patients followed up for 18–24 months, 18 had satisfactory aesthetic results after one procedure and two required a second session. Our experience gradually led us to design micro-cannulae for greater injection precision and enabled us to perform these procedures under local anaesthesia. The reduction in ecchymoses and postoperative oedema through the use of these cannulae has significantly reduced convalescence time. Conclusion: In patients who undergo multiple procedures, lipofilling can be a simple and reliable alternative to correct imperfections following rhinoplasty. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Fretting fatigue occurs when the contact surfaces of two components undergo small oscillatory movement while they are subjected to a clamping force. A cyclic external load gives rise to the early initiation of fatigue cracks, thus reducing their service life. In this paper, the fretting fatigue behaviour of commercially pure titanium flat samples (1.5mm thick) is evaluated. A fretting device composed of a frame, load cell, and two screw-mounted cylindrical fretting pads with convex extremities was built and set to a servo-hydraulic testing machine. The fatigue tests were conducted under load control at a frequency of 10 Hz and stress ratio R = 0.1, with various contact load values applied to the fretting pads. Additional tests under inert environment allowed assessing the role of oxidation on the wear debris formation. The fracture surfaces and fretting scars were analysed via scanning electron microscopy in order to evaluate the surface damage evolution and its effect on the fatigue crack features. The effect of the fretting condition on the S-N curve of the material in the range of 104-106 cycles is described. Fatigue crack growth calculations allowed estimating the crack initiation and propagation lives under fretting conditions. The effect of the fretting condition in fatigue life is stronger for the lower values of cyclic stress and does not seem to depend on the contact loading value. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

13. Different Modeling Approaches for a Heterogeneous Liquid−Liquid Reaction Process

- Abstract
Multivariate linear regression (MLR) techniques were used to develop empirical models which are able to predict the formation of the main product and byproducts of the adiabatic benzene nitration process, as a function of the main operating conditions. Experiments carried out in a pilot plant enabled us to reproduce the operating conditions of the industrial process, providing experimental data in the intermediate and fast reaction regimes. The nitrobenzene (MNB) formation was modeled according to the film and Danckwerts mechanistic models, and the results were compared with a MLR model, showing that both approaches are suitable for describing this reaction. Nevertheless, the results stress an improved performance of the MLR model when compared to the mechanistic models, despite its structural simplicity. The statistical models developed for the nitrophenols (NPs), namely for the dinitrophenol and trinitrophenol (DNP and TNP, respectively), describe accurately the formation of these byproducts, overcoming the lack of data on kinetic and physical-chemical properties required by the mechanistic approach. The MLR models can be used for process optimization regarding conversion, productivity, and selectivity. By making use of these models, it was possible to estimate the operating conditions (temperature, 81 °C; F
B /FN ratio, 1.5; residence time, 1.9 min; nitric acid concentration, 2.6%; sulfuric acid concentration, 64%; interfacial area, 46.7 × 103m2·m-3) that enable the attainment of a 99.99% MNB yield, with a total NP concentration<215 ppm.- Published

- Abstract
A kinetic model considering simultaneously the removal of methylglucuronic acids (GlcA), the formation of hexenuronic acids (HexA), and their degradation/dissolution is proposed. In the model, the effective alkali concentration in the entrapped liquor was used instead of that in the bulk liquor, accounting for the heterogeneous nature of wood pulping. The results are very satisfactorily explained by assuming that GlcA are composed of two subgroups: the fast GlcA, which disappear early in the cook with a low activation energy (58 kJ/mol), and the slow GlcA, which are degraded/dissolved (E
a = 91 kJ/mol) or produce HexA, not being totally consumed. The degradation/dissolution reactions of both GlcA subgroups are second-order with respect to their content, while HexA formation (Ea = 92 kJ/mol) and degradation (Ea = 110 kJ/mol) are first-order with respect to slow GlcA and HexA contents, respectively. The effective alkali concentration influences the reactions that involve the slow GlcA and HexA, with a greater contribution to HexA degradation. The sulfidity is not relevant on any of these reactions. The model was experimentally validated with varying temperature, alkali, and sulfidity profiles and predicts reasonably well the GlcA and HexA contents during kraft pulping of Eucalyptus globulus.- Published

- Abstract
The evolution of 4-O-methylglucuronic (GlcA) and hexenuronic (HexA) acids contents during kraft pulping of Eucalyptus globulus was investigated. Different operating conditions were considered in the range of 80−165 °C for temperature, 10−45 g of Na
2 O/100 g of oven-dried wood for effective alkali charge, and 15−75% for sulfidity, with a liquid-to-wood ratio of 8 L/kg. The GlcA content was about 5% in the native wood and decreased continuously throughout the cook. Up to 87% of this component was consumed, being dissolved together with the xylan chain or converted to HexA. The latter were detected for temperatures higher than 110 °C. The highest HexA values (~40 mmol/kg of oven-dried pulp) were observed for delignification degrees close to those of industrial bleachable pulps, and the subsequent decrease in their content was only noticeable for lower lignin amounts. The temperature and the effective alkali charge were confirmed to have a strong influence on the HexA content profiles and on the degradation/dissolution of GlcA, but the effect of sulfidity revealed to be negligible on any of them.- Published

- Abstract
The benzene adiabatic nitration process has been carried out in a pilot plant to enable the study of this reaction under relevant industrial operating conditions, aiming to increase the reaction conversion and selectivity by reducing the nitrophenols. The influence of relevant operating parameters such as the reaction temperature, benzene-to-nitric acid molar feed ratio (F
B /FN ), and stirring speed was studied. The operation ranges covered were as follows: reaction temperature, 80−135 °C; FB /FN , 0.96−1.15; stirring speed, 360−1700 rpm. The residence time and the sulfuric acid concentration were fixed at 2 min and 68 wt %, respectively. The production of cleaner mononitrobenzene (MNB) requires lower nitration temperatures; higher FB /FN ratios than in current industrial practice; and high stirring speeds, allowing the interfacial area in this liquid−liquid mixture to be increased and the decrease in temperature to be compensated. The results reported here highlight the relevance of combining operating parameters to improve the performance of the reactor. In this study, it was possible to accomplish the same MNB production with a significant reduction in nitrophenols concentration. This work presents results that might be useful for conventional industrial benzene adiabatic nitration plants, to improve the prevention of pollution in this process and allow competitiveness with new plants in fulfilment of environmental law requirements.- Published

- Abstract
Abstract A series of 79 normal human hearts was studied focusing on the morphological characteristics of the papillary muscles of the right ventricle and their tendinous cords (chordae tendineae). The number, incidence, length and shape of the anterior, septal and posterior papillary muscles were observed. The tendinous cords attached to each papillary muscle were counted at their origin. The papillary muscles and the tendinous cords were measured in situ and after the removal of the right atrioventricular valve (tricuspid valve). The anterior and posterior papillary muscles (apm, ppm) were present in 100% of the cases. The septal papillary muscle (spm) was absent in 21.5% of the hearts. The apm presented 1 head in 81% and 2 heads in 19% it was 19.16 mm in length. The spm was one-headed in 41.7% and presented two heads in 16.5% the presence of a 3 and 4 heads appeared in 12.7% and 7.6% respectively the spm was 5.59 mm in length. The ppm had 1 head in 25.4%, 2 heads in 46.8%, 3 heads in 21.5% and 4 heads in 6.3% of the cases it was 11.53 mm in length. Tendinous cords (TC) varied as follows from 1 to 11 TC originated in the apm (mean 4.74) from 1 to 8 TC originated in the ppm (mean 2.67) and from 1 to 5 TC originated in the spm (mean 1.77).

Summary The variations of the direction of the myocardial bundles of the bridges over coronary arteries and branches were studied in relation to the direction of the vessels over which they are found. The investigation was performed on 82 hearts of individuals whose death was accidental and unrelated to cardiac disease. The hearts were obtained from cadavers of individuals of either sex and different racial groups, whose age ranged from 7 to 68 years. The angle between the direction of the musculature and of the vessels may explain why in some cases there is no change in the structure of the “pontine portion” of the wall.

- Abstract
Cell cycle withdrawal in postmitotic cells involves cyclin-dependent kinase (Cdk) inhibitors that repress cell cycle Cdk activity. During mouse neurogenesis, cortical postmitotic neurons are shown here to accumulate high levels of the p27 Cdk inhibitor compared with their progenitor neuroblasts. Elevated p27 levels in staged embryo brain extracts correlate with p27 binding to Cdk2, and Cdk inactivation. Yet, Cdk5, which is associated with the noncyclin activator p35 in neurons, remains active in the presence of high p27 levels. Both in vitro and in vivo, p27 and related inhibitors can recognize a cyclin D-Cdk5 complex but not a p35-Cdk5 complex. The results indicate that the choice of activator determines the susceptibility of Cdk5 to p27 and related Cdk inhibitors, and thus its ability to act in postmitotic cells.

24. Influence of raw-material quality and process parameters in the production of insulation cork agglomerates

- Abstract
Insulation cork agglomerates are produced with different low-cost raw-materials unsuitable for other products: virgin corks (from prunings, thinnings and dead trees), reproduction corks (refuse and underaged) and industrial byproducts (corkback strips). These materials were analysed in relation to chemical composition, structure and trituration behaviour. The industrial byproducts differ significantly from the other materials due to the presence of an important amount of the unsuberised lignocellulosic phloem (the back of the corkboards) in a way that is detrimental to the agglomeration process. The influence of raw-material, granulometry and process parameters (time, temperature and pressure) were studied using an experimental autoclave. Temperature is the determining factor for agglomeration. Insufficient adhesion is obtained under 230°C and adequate agglomeration is attained only with temperatures in the range 230–300°C, corresponding to mass losses of 10–25%.

- Abstract
The cardiac apex was defined and 3 types were presented: the anatomical apex, the base of which was established at the incisura apicis cordis; the amplified anatomical apex, twice the volume of the preceding; and the geometric apex, the distal third of the ventricles. These types of cardiac apex were studied in connection with the superficial branches of the coronary series at their level. The investigation was conducted on 81 normal hearts (56 males and 25 females) of 60 Caucasian and 21 non-Caucasian individuals. The arteries were injected with colored gelatine mixed with a radiopaque substance. The number of branches decreased from the geometric (the largest type) to the anatomical apex (the smallest): 27 on the surface of the geometric apex, 14 on the surface of the amplified anatomical apex, and 7 on the surface of the anatomical apex. The sternocostal aspect had a higher number of superficial branches than the diaphragmatic aspect in all types of cardiac apex. Sexual differences were found in the incidence of the r posterior ventriculi sinistri intermedius on the amplified anatomical apex as it was more frequent in females than in males. In the geometric apex there were 3 branches also more frequent in females: r anterior ventriculi sinistri inferior, r posterior ventriculi sinistri lateralis I, and r posterior ventriculi sinistri lateralis IV.

27. Prey availability and the search behaviour of the scorpion Diplocentrus peloncillensis

- Abstract
We examined the effects of prey availability on the search behaviour (search activity) of the scorpion Diplocentrus peloncillensis in a series of laboratory experiments. The search activity of the scorpions was dependent on prey availability and the amount of time exposed to prey. After 60 min exposure to prey at the highest prey availabilities, scorpions changed from active search to ambush-like search behaviour, while maintaining a relatively high rate of search at low prey availabilities. The results support suggestions, based on field observations of scorpion activity in the literature, that scorpion search behaviour involves foraging time minimization as a result of predation risk constraints.

- Abstract
Two sets of markers and populations were considered in this study: (a) the variability at 17 protein loci and in the sequences of the first hypervariable segment of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) were compared in 10 South American Indian tribes, in a total 3016 and 241 individuals, respectively; and (b) a triple comparison was made, in relation to 17 protein, mtDNA and six hypervariable tandem repeat loci in four Brazilian Indian tribes, involving 1567, 56 and 194 persons, respectively. Both the intrapopulational diversities and the population relationships obtained in these groups with these different sets of markers showed no significant correlation. High levels of heterogeneity were observed both at the protein and hypervariable individual loci, as well between mtDNA sites. The different positions observed for the Yanomama (but not for the other nine tribes) in the trees which summarized the protein and mtDNA data suggest some degree of asymmetric interchange related to sex between them and neighbouring tribes.
