The article focuses on a study on the impact of site at macro- and micro-geographical scales on the tenacity and associated features of the extracellular structure byssus secreted by Mytilus galloprovincialis within Ría de Vigo in Spain. Byssus is described as an array of collagenous threads secreted in the ventral groove of the foot of the mussel, the secretion of which allows the mussel to withstand hydrodynamic challenges presented by the sea. Results show that mussels in the outer exposed site Cabo Estay exhibit a more hydrodynamic shape designed to face hydrodynamic stress. The distal section of the byssus is cited as a key factor associated with the variability in mussel tenacity.
