This one-week project utilized the trade book Black and White: The Confrontation between Reverend Fred L. Shuttlesworth and Eugene Bull Connor (Brimner, 2011) to explore non-violent advocacies during the 1950s and 1960s civil rights movement. Students read selected excerpts from the trade book and created a comic narrative to convey their understanding of the civil rights advocacies of Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth in Birmingham, Alabama. The students were able to accurately portray Rev. Shuttlesworth's actions in a cohesive narrative using evidence from the trade book within their comics. The students demonstrated a solid understanding of non-violent advocacies, and why these methods were ultimately successful. The selected trade book highlighted what is a local history topic for the students. The accuracy of the students' comic narrative suggests that the local connection was benefical to the students' engagement with and processing of the information in the trade book. In view of the disadvantages of the existing popular RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) book inventory in the industry, such as expensive equipment, low accuracy, and high business threshold, this paper proposes a deep neural network-based inventory framework. By loading different deep neural network algorithm modules, the proposed framework is able to complete target detection of 1D/2D barcodes in photos or video streams. Faster R-CNN is used for 2D barcode and SSD-ResNet for 1D barcode. Then the target barcode and the coordinates of the barcode are intercepted, the books are sorted by the barcode coordinates, and the values are obtained through the barcode recognition to realize the book inventory. Through inventory test on 1D/2D barcode book, the accuracy and recall rate of the framework reached above 99%, with precision rate close to 100%. Compared with RFID inventory, the proposed deep neural network based inventory method is more accurate and precise, and increased the processing speed by around 35%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BOOK industry ,SOCIAL sciences education ,CREATIVE nonfiction ,EXPOSITION (Rhetoric) ,QUALITATIVE research - Abstract
Purpose - This paper explores the representation of consequential women in history within children's and young adult biographies. Design/methodology/approach - The data pool was established by developing a list of women's names extracted from common textbooks and state social studies curricula. Early-grade (K-4th) and middle-grade (5th-8th) in-print books were selected for juxtaposition because these students have the least prior knowledge and are perhaps most dependent on the text. Two researchers independently engaged in qualitative content analysis research methods, which included open and axial coding. Findings - Early- and middle-grade biographies aptly established the historical significance of, but largely failed to contextualize, each figure's experiences, accomplishments and contemporaneous tensions. The women were presented as consequential, though their advocacies were not situated within the larger context. Research limitations/implications - Limitations included a dearth of women featured in both state standards and biographies, limited audience (early and middle grades) and exclusion of out-of-print books. Comparable inquiries into narrative nonfiction, expository texts and historical fiction, which have different emphases than biographies, are areas for future research. Practical implications - Discussion focused on the significance of findings for teachers and researchers. Early- and middle-grade teachers are guided to contextualize the selected historical figures using primary and secondary source supplements. Originality/value - No previous scholarship exists on this particular topic. Comparable inquiries examine trade books' depiction of historical significance, not contextualization of continuity and change. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose - The Girl Who Buried Her Dreams in a Can, written by Dr Tererai, profiles a cultural, yet global experience of the power of believing in one's dream. Through this study of the similarities and differences of how children in the United States and abroad live and dream of a better life, this lesson seeks to enhance students' understandings of the power and authority they possess to effect change not only within their own lives but also in the lives of countless others in world. After reading the text, students will work to create vision boards illustrating their plans to effect change within their homes, schools, communities, states or countries. They will present their plans to their peers. To culminate the lesson, the students will bury their dreams in can and collectively decide on a future date to revisit the can to determine how far they have progressed in accomplishing their goals. Design/methodology/approach - This is an elementary grades 3-6 lesson plan. There was no research design/methodology/approach included. Findings - As this is a lesson plan and no actual research was represented, there are no findings. Originality/value - This is an original lesson plan completed by the first author Takisha Durm. Purpose - Joan Procter, Dragon Doctor describes the life of Joan Beauchamp Procter, renowned herpetologist, zoologist, Curator of Reptiles at the British Museum and designer of the London Zoo Reptile House. In this lesson, students reframe initial viewpoints of scientists that are not representative of a broad understanding of who scientists are and what being a scientist means. Exploring understandings and expanding their view of science to include varied areas of social sciences provokes deep discussions among students as they prepare to teach others. Using content area skills, artwork, writing, literacy and technology, students explore diverse people and fields of the sciences. Design/methodology/approach - Students engage in collaborative efforts with peers to involve themselves with content knowledge and skills in the social studies, as they integrate other areas of the curriculum including science, art, writing, literacy, literature, technology, critical thinking, research skills and inquiry-based learning. Findings include students participating in meaningful learning individually and collectively through inquiry. As students learn with and from one another, they conceptualize their own ideas through their own work in exploring relevant resources. Students plan action to move learning outside the classroom in generating changes in museums and monuments to showcase broader cultural representation of scientists in their communities. Findings - Students engage in inquiry learning using Joan Procter, Dragon Doctor as a key text. Students explore the text and related resources, while learning with one another about scientists. Students expand their content knowledge and apply critical thinking skills, noting similarities and differences in scientists, ultimately acknowledging that what scientists do through inquiry and exploration helps them identify as scientists. Varied fields and backgrounds of scientists are explored, and students examine cultural representation in museums commemorating scientists and scientific contributions. Students create action plans to consult with museums about these issues and curate exhibits, like Joan Procter, to share with others. Originality/value - This lesson provides students multiple avenues to deepen learning while conceptualizing and formulating their own understandings. Further, students are required to use multiple skills in conveying their ideas for social change to reflect their new broader conceptualization of scientists and the many fields that science includes. Additionally, they have to understand the topics discussed fully in order to convey their research findings to another audience in their school or community as they create museum exhibits. Finally, while students learn, they begin to see themselves represented in fields through evident, inclusive demonstrations of contributions by diverse scientists. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to allow students to explore the accomplishments of Harriet Tubman at various stages of her life through a guided research investigation. Students will be able to identify Harriet Tubman as a human hero by creating biographical story boards to display first in the classroom and later moved to a local cultural museum. The lesson plan is based on the trade book Before She Was Harriet. This short biography of Harriet Tubman is written in a free verse style to introduce young readers to the several roles she held throughout her impressive life span. Design/methodology/approach - Social constructivist principles are integrated throughout the lesson; that is, meaningful interactions with peers and the teacher influence student learning. Students participate in a scaffolded research project with the support of teacher modeling and graphic organizers. They expand their knowledge by creating an original interdisciplinary project, a story board biography. Throughout all phases of the learning experience, students engage in critical thinking and challenging activities that include drawing connections among ideas, evaluating group work, arguing positions and applying research skills. Additionally, a variety of resources, including technology, are incorporated to promote active student engagement. Findings - This is a National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) Notable Tradebook Lesson Plan. Originality/value - Young learners need the opportunity to engage in scaffolded research activities in a social studies classroom. This innovative instructional plan provides PreK-3 teachers a guide to introducing students to Harriet Tubman by reading aloud Before She Was Harriet, a 2018 Notable Trade book, and allowing students to gather a deep understanding of this historical figure through guided research over the course of two to three sessions. Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to use Soar, Elinor, a 2011 NCSS notable trade book, to teach a short unit on remarkable women in traditionally male dominated fields. Students will research trailblazing women, create a project to teach others about their chosen trailblazer and represent their choice at a trailblazing women banquet. Design/methodology/approach - Students will be supported in their research into trailblazing women through reading books about women who struggled to realize their dreams of succeeding in difficult professions. Findings - This lesson plan gives students an opportunity to investigate the struggles of women throughout history to enter male dominated professions. Originality/value - The value of this lesson plans is to provide students an opportunity to study women who have made a difference through breaking down barriers. Students will be able to learn about a variety of different women, who are not often studied in social studies classes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose -- Standards and policy changes in K-12 education have created the unintended consequence of reducing instructional time spent on social studies content. This limited time devoted to social studies presumably has led to more integrated social studies and literacy instruction. The purpose of this paper is to document the types of high-quality social studies children's books found in classroom libraries across five states. Design/methodology/approach -- In the present mixed methods study, the researchers utilized a database of 60 classroom libraries across five states to identify which high-quality trade books, defined by the National Council for the Social Studies, were present. The researchers document trends in both frequencies of books and social studies content across decades, classrooms, grade levels and states from 1972 to 2015. Findings -- The findings indicate that National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) Notable Trade Books for Young People texts are largely missing from the elementary classroom libraries the researchers sampled. Of the 5,544 unique titles included on the NCSS lists from 1972 to 2015, 453 were located in the US classroom libraries database, representing 8.17 percent of books found on the notable lists. Originality/value -- Before teachers can take steps toward integrating social studies and literacy, they need easy access to high-quality social studies texts. Many high-quality trade books are recommended each year for exposing students to social studies content; however, the researchers found limited numbers of these books in classroom libraries. The researchers recommend the lists be circulated to a wider audience to inform more teachers about these texts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose -- History-based trade books are an essential classroom option for social studies and English teachers. Professional organizations in history, social studies, English, reading and literature promote these engaging, age-appropriate secondary sources. Research suggests that misrepresentations appear often within history-based curricula, yet the majority of empirical studies have been completed on textbooks. The purpose of this paper is to examine the historical representation of Thomas Jefferson within trade books. Design/methodology/approach -- The data sample included trade books targeting various ages to make comparisons within and between grade ranges; the authors selected books published in distinctly different years to examine how Jefferson's historical representation changed over time. The mixed methods content analysis used both open coding and axial coding. Findings -- Findings included sanitized versions of slavery at Monticello and omissions of his relationship with Sally Hemings. Date of publication, particularly those published after 1999 as new scientific evidence emerged linking Hemings and Jefferson, and intended audience shaped patterns of representation about Jefferson's privileged social position, authorship of the Declaration of Independence, political philosophy and involvement in the American Revolution, to mention a few. Heroification, a common historical misrepresentation, did not appear. Research limitations/implications -- Limitations included: uneven portions of the data pool as children's and young adult trade books were not common in early and mid-twentieth century; organization of books by grade range is problematic due to inexact nature of ranking narratives' complexity; and definitive conclusions cannot emerge from a single study. Future research should consider how trade books represent other historical figures, particularly slave-owning American presidents. Practical implications -- Practical suggestions, such as how to address misrepresentations using primary sources, are offered. Originality/value -- Thomas Jefferson, undoubtedly an impactful American, is frequently included in elementary, middle level and high school curriculum. The authors examined Jefferson's historical representation within trade books. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research is concerned with the development and evaluation of a redesign of the online and mobile app African Storybook initiative services that support the authoring and reading of openly licensed storybooks to support literacy development in Africa. This redesign was initiated after a review of the African Storybook web site and presented an opportunity to align the sociocultural theory used by African Storybook researchers and design of interactive artifacts and environments. The redesign makes use of a number of cultural-historical activity theory principles, including: object of activity (obyekt an independent entity and predmet the imagined objective outcome), tool mediated and shared objects that are pail of the third-generation activity system. Three primary activities were identified (read, author and research). The author activity, implemented as a shared object includes library, create, translate and adapt objects of activity. Each of these objects make use of a single design pattern that includes a list of items that can be sorted, searched and viewed. Results from usability testing sessions lead to a refined design and provided evidence that redesign addresses problems identified during the review. This research illustrated that the reading, authoring and research obyekts created by individuals support the outcome of a new storybook (predmet). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Before Edith Whartons library became available at The Mount, scholars relied on the well-known bookseller notation that her Bible contained "passages marked by Wharton, especially in Ecclesiastes, Proverbs, and Isaiah." This article makes available a careful investigation of Wharton's annotations in her Bible, revealing not only the specifics of the passages Wharton marked, but also her focus on other sections of the Bible as well, including the books of Job, Joel, Micah, and the Pauline Epistles in the New Testament. Taken as a whole, Wharton's considerable marginalia illuminates theological issues of interest to her, and one in particular-the contemplation of wisdom-is a recurrent theme. For all the many enigmas it presents, and future threads to follow, Edith Whartons Bible is an intriguing artifact of an interrogation into the mystery of divine and human wisdom. This article analyzes the role of awards as quality signals in the book industry. Drawing on a novel dataset of book awards, it examines the level of consensus between expert juries (as measured by awards and nominations), active consumption (as measured by consumer ratings), passive consumption (as measured by sales), and long-term consecration (as measured by inclusion in anthologies or prestigious lists) in the book industry of the United States, France, and the Netherlands or Flanders. It finds that there is virtually no overlap in the books that receive recognition by different expert juries, in stark contrast to similar research in the movie industry. Only in the United States we find some evidence of a consensus between expert book juries, active and passive consumption, and long-term consecration. From this comparison, we draw theoretical implications, drawing on the theory of economic coordination regimes by Karpik, about the different meaning of awards as signals of quality. In particular, we argue that when authenticity is important, we should not expect quality signals to converge, but when authenticity is less important, quality signals should be expected to converge more. PUBLISHING ,LIBRARY associations ,BOOK industry - Abstract
Introduction. Jeffrey Beall's now-defunct List of Predatory Publishers and the American Library Association's Freedom to Read Statement are introduced. Uses of Beall's List are examined in the context of the ALA Statement and academic libraries. Other issues with the List are examined and alternatives are reviewed. Method. Tensions between the List and the Statement were identified primarily by close reading and through relating these to the role of academics, as readers and writers of academic journals and as faculty decision makers. Analysis. Beall's descriptions of journals are analysed in the light of his claimed goals and criteria. Results. 'Predatory' is found to be a 'subversive or dangerous' label under Proposition 5 of the ALA S tatement. Tension is found to exist between Beall's List and the statement when used anywhere in faculty-run academic institutions. A number of approaches to avoid these tensions are discussed, including other approaches to determine the quality of an open access journal. Conclusion. Malicious academic publishers undoubtedly exist , but Beall's List is not an ethical solution to the problem of their existence. A replacement should be built from the ground up, rather than starting from the List. A possible checklist and associated metric are provided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As the book publishing market changes from offline to online, readers tend to purchase books while paying more attention to book covers and metadata rather than the actual book contents. We examine whether publishers can know users' satisfaction with books in advance, and both metadata and book covers help predict this satisfaction. Exploring effects of metadata and book covers on the satisfaction is not only necessary for publishers' perspectives, but also for librarians' perceptions. However, the majority of prior research on user preference-based book recommendation systems in both book industry and library system employed review comments, ratings, or book loan records. Thus, we open up the potentiality of other factors, which implicitly affect the satisfaction with books. We collected book titles, authors, publishers, reviews, ratings, and covers from the "Literature and Fiction" genre in the Amazon bookstore and conducted an experiment to predict readers' satisfaction ratings based on book reviews, metadata, and book covers. Several deep learning classifiers (CNN, ResNet, LSTM, BiLSTM, GRU, BiGRU) were employed. Reviews alone can reach a certain level of prediction performance, but adding metadata, cover images, and cover objects to a review-based predictive model slightly improves that performance. Based on these results, we confirmed that both metadata and book covers improve predicting readers' perceived satisfaction. This study is a pilot exploration of the idea that multimodal approaches can improve the prediction of the perceived satisfaction of book readers. Moreover, we have publicly released both source codes and data samples employed in this study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The BISAC Subject Headings List is a standard used to categorize books in the book industry of the United States. Since the second half of the 2000s, several public libraries in the United States have experimented with BISAC as an alternative classification system to the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC). The system has been used by Google Books and other electronic platforms. This article reviews its main characteristics, structure and display, development and revision process, epistemology and approach to KO, use in libraries, and future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BOOK industry ,MODERNITY ,HISTORY of the book industry - Abstract
In or about the 1770s human individuality changed. This handy paraphrase of Virginia Woolf's formulation could serve as an introduction to the revolution brought about by the established circulating library in Classic Modernity, aka the Enlightenment. With the novel settled in as commonplace, a growingly variegated and relaxed reading public enjoying extensive reading and delighting in what up until recently had been called dubious printed matter, the circulating library gradually won the battle for useful and amusing matters. Where it had been deemed "an evergreen tree of diabolical knowledge" (Sheridan The Rivals I. 2) comparable to brothels and gin shops, this modern type of library fitting the public sphere like a glove was snowballing into a sociable space where the great and the good were now impressive numbers of chic ladies advertising their knowledge as emotional and sartorial extravagance. Novels inundated the public and private spaces of the day: they were everywhere in salons, coffee houses, on shop and bank counters, on fashionable toilette or tea tables and kitchen ranges, in carriages and on board ships voyaging into, across and out of Britain, in English, French or Italian, devoured by aristocratic ladies and domestic maids and very often read in the midst of something else. Fiction and the circulating library revolutionized the book trade, the book and trade in 1700s' Britain, as they saw a sea change in the attitude towards reading that had not been witnessed after the trail-blazing invention of print in the 15th century. As the royalty, the aristocracy and the higher ranks of the clergy were erecting huge libraries recalling ancient mausoleums, these new reading centres paved the way to modern individual freedom and were instrumental in expanding the reading classes across the country, between the sexes and down the social ladder. This essay will look into the fashionable sociability offered by the new reading practices, values and preferences cultivated in the negotiations between public and private spaces, male sense and female sensibility, serious and frivolous options, scientific-to-be and would-be artistic choices, educational and sentimental outlets. In so doing, it will analyse what in the late 1790s came to be defined "depots of learning," as well as "stores for rational amusement" - an exciting anticipation of consumerist means in our Late Modernity.
