Abstract

Exotic nuclei are characterized by having a number of neutrons (or protons) in excess relative to stable nuclei. Their shell structure, which represents single-particle motion in a nucleus1,2, may vary due to nuclear force and excess neutrons3–6, in a phenomenon called shell evolution7. This effect could be counterbalanced by collective modes causing deformations of the nuclear surface8. Here, we study the interplay between shell evolution and shape deformation by focusing on the magnetic moment of an isomeric state of the neutron-rich nucleus 75Cu. We measure the magnetic moment using highly spin-controlled rare-isotope beams and achieve large spin alignment via a two-step reaction scheme9that incorporates an angular-momentum-selecting nucleon removal. By combining our experiments with numerical simulations of many-fermion correlations, we find that the low-lying states in 75Cu are, to a large extent, of single-particle nature on top of a correlated 74Ni core. We elucidate the crucial role of shell evolution even in the presence of the collective mode, and within the same framework we consider whether and how the double magicity of the 78Ni nucleus is restored, which is also of keen interest from the perspective of nucleosynthesis in explosive stellar processes.

Abstract

This paper reviews recent results from electromagnetic moment measurements on isotopes in the island of inversion around N=20. The obtained moments on neutron rich Na, Mg, Al and Si isotopes allow to draw conclusions on the amount of intruder components in their ground state wave function, demonstrating a gradual transition from the normal sd-shell region into the island of inversion, starting at N=18 for Na, N=19 for Mg and N=20 for Al isotopes. A measurement of the ground state g factor of 35Si (N=21), using a polarized fragment beam at GANIL, is discussed in more detail. The magnetic moment μ(35Si, Iπ= 7/2-) = (-)1.638(4) μNis consistent with a normal ground state structure, dominated by a νf7/2neutron.

Abstract

First results are reported from a major new initiative of experiments, which focus on nuclear structure studies at extreme isospin values by means of isomer spectroscopy. The experiments represent the first part of the so-called stopped-beam campaign within the Rare ISotope INvestigations at GSI (Rising) project. Time-correlated γ decays from individually identified nuclear species have been measured, allowing the clean identification of isomeric decays in a wide range of exotic nuclei both at the proton drip-line and in heavy, neutron-rich systems. An overview of the experimental technique will be given, together with the performance of the new germanium detector array and future research plans for the collaboration.

Abstract

Relativistic energy projectile fragmentation of 208Pb has been used to produce a range of exotic nuclei. The nuclei of interest were studied by detecting delayed gamma rays following the decay of isomeric states. Experimental information on the excited states of the neutron-rich N=126 nucleus, 204Pt, following internal decay of two isomeric states, was obtained for the first time. In addition, decays from the previously reported isomeric I=27ħ and I=(49/2)ħ states in 148Tb and 147Gd, respectively, have been observed. These isomeric decays represent the highest spin discrete states observed to date following a projectile fragmentation reaction, and opens further the possibility of doing `high-spin physics' using this technique.

Abstract

We report the first g factor measurement on microsecond isomers of neutron-rich nuclei produced in projectile-fragmentation reactions at intermediate energies. The nuclides in the vicinity of 68Ni were produced and spin oriented following the fragmentation of a 76Ge, 61.4 MeV u−1 beam at GANIL. The LISE spectrometer was used to select the nuclei of interest. The time-dependent perturbed angular distribution (TDPAD) method was applied in combination with the heavy-ion–gamma correlation technique to measure the g factors of 69mCu (Jπ &equal; 13/2+, T1/2 &equal; 350 ns) and 67mNi (Jπ &equal; 9/2+, T1/2 &equal; 13.3 μs). Specific details of the experimental technique and the comparison of the results (&vert;g(69mCu)&vert; &equal; 0.225(25) and &vert;g(67mNi)&vert; &equal; 0.125(6)) with theoretical calculations are discussed. These results provide another indication of the importance of proton excitations across the Z &equal; 28 shell gap.

Abstract

Exited states in 134Pr were populated in the fusion-evaporation reaction 119Sn(19F; 4n)134Pr. Recoil distance Doppler-shift and Doppler-shift attenuation measurements using the Euroball spectrometer, in conjunction with the inner BGO ball and the Cologne plunger were performed at beam energies of 87MeV and 83MeV, respectively. The measured B(E2) values within the two chiral candidates bands are not identical while the corresponding B(M1) values have a similar behaviour within the experimental uncertainties. Abstract

Highspin states of185Ir were excited in the187Re(a,6n) reaction and measured with the OSIRIS spectrometer. The first backbending in thephx9/2 band was found at a rotational frequency of h?=0.40 MeV. Blocking arguments suggest that this is due to the alignment of an h9/2 quasiproton pair.
