Reciprocal scatterers necessarily extinguish the same amount of incoming power when excited from opposite directions. This property implies that it is not possible to realize scatterers that are transparent when excited from one direction but that scatter and absorb light for the opposite excitation, limiting opportunities in the context of asymmetric imaging and nanophotonic circuits. This reciprocity constraint may be overcome with an external bias that breaks time-reversal symmetry, posing however challenges in terms of practical implementations and integration. Here, we explore the use of tailored nonlinearities combined with geometric asymmetries in suitably tailored resonant nanoantennas. We demonstrate that, under suitable design conditions, a nonlinear scatterer can be cloaked for one excitation direction, yet strongly scatters when excited at the same frequency and intensity from the opposite direction. This nonreciprocal scattering phenomenon opens opportunities for nonlinear nanophotonics, asymmetric imaging and visibility, all-optical signal processing and directional sensing.

Thermal emission from a hot body is inherently challenging to control due to its incoherent nature. Recent advances have shown that patterned surfaces can transform thermal emission into partially coherent beams with tailored directionality and frequency selectivity. Here we experimentally demonstrate polarization-selective, unidirectional and narrowband thermal emission using single-layer metasurfaces. By implementing polarization gradients across the surface, we unveil a generalization of the photonic Rashba effect from circular polarizations to any pair of orthogonal polarizations and apply it to thermal emission. Leveraging pointwise specification of arbitrary elliptical polarization, we implement a thermal geometric phase and leverage it to prove previous theoretical predictions that asymmetric chiral emission is possible without violating reciprocity. This general platform can be extended to other frequency regimes in efforts to compactify metasurface optics technologies without the need for external coherent sources.

Modulating anisotropic phonon polaritons (PhPs) can open new avenues in infrared nanophotonics. Promising PhP dispersion engineering through polariton hybridization has been demonstrated by coupling gated graphene to single-layer α-MoO3. However, the mechanism underlying the gate-dependent modulation of hybridization has remained elusive. Here, using IR nanospectroscopic imaging, we demonstrate active modulation of the optical response function, quantified in measurements of gate dependence of wavelength, amplitude, and dissipation rate of the hybrid plasmon–phonon polaritons (HPPPs) in both single-layer and twisted bilayer α-MoO3/graphene heterostructures. Intriguingly, while graphene doping leads to a monotonic increase in HPPP wavelength, amplitude and dissipation rate show transition from an initially anticorrelated decrease to a correlated increase. We attribute this behavior to the intricate interplay of gate-dependent components of the HPPP complex momentum. Our results provide the foundation for active polariton control of integrated α-MoO3nanophotonics devices.

Controlling quantum materials with light is of fundamental and technological importance. By utilizing the strong coupling of light and matter in optical cavities1–3, recent studies were able to modify some of their most defining features4–6. Here we study the magneto-optical properties of a van der Waals magnet that supports strong coupling of photons and excitons even in the absence of external cavity mirrors. In this material—the layered magnetic semiconductor CrSBr—emergent light–matter hybrids called polaritons are shown to substantially increase the spectral bandwidth of correlations between the magnetic, electronic and optical properties, enabling largely tunable optical responses to applied magnetic fields and magnons. Our results highlight the importance of exciton–photon self-hybridization in van der Waals magnets and motivate novel directions for the manipulation of quantum material properties by strong light–matter coupling.

Weyl semimetals hold great promise in revolutionizing nonreciprocal optical components due to their unique topological properties. By exhibiting nonreciprocal magneto-optical effects without necessitating an external magnetic field, these materials offer remarkable miniaturization opportunities and reduced energy consumption. However, their intrinsic topological robustness poses a challenge for applications demanding tunability. In this work, we introduce an innovative approach to enhance the tunability of their response, utilizing multilayered configurations of twisted anisotropic Weyl semimetals. Our design enables controlled and reversible isolation by adjusting the twist angle between the anisotropic layers. When implemented in the Faraday geometry within the mid-IR frequency range, our design delivers impressive isolation, exceeding 50 dB, while maintaining a minimal insertion loss of just 0.33 dB. Moreover, the in-plane anisotropy of Weyl semimetals eliminates one or both polarizers of conventional isolator geometry, significantly reducing the overall dimensions. These results set the stage for creating highly adaptable, ultra-compact optical isolators that can propel the fields of integrated photonics and quantum technology applications to new heights.

Optical metasurfaces supporting localized resonances have become a versatile platform for shaping the wavefront of light, but their low quality (Q-) factor modes inevitably modify the wavefront over extended momentum and frequency space, resulting in limited spectral and angular control. In contrast, periodic nonlocal metasurfaces have been providing great flexibility for both spectral and angular selectivity but with limited spatial control. Here, we introduce multiresonant nonlocal metasurfaces capable of shaping the spatial properties of light using several resonances with widely disparate Q-factors. In contrast to previous designs, the narrowband resonant transmission punctuates a broadband resonant reflection window enabled by a highly symmetric array, achieving simultaneous spectral filtering and wavefront shaping in the transmission mode. Through rationally designed perturbations, we realize nonlocal flat lenses suitable as compact band-pass imaging devices, ideally suited for microscopy. We further employ modified topology optimization to demonstrate high-quality-factor metagratings for extreme wavefront transformations with large efficiency.

Exceptional points (EPs) arising in non-Hermitian systems have led to a variety of intriguing wave phenomena, and have been attracting increased interest in various physical platforms. In this Review, we highlight the latest fundamental advances in the context of EPs in various nanoscale systems, and overview the theoretical progress related to EPs, including higher-order EPs, bulk Fermi arcs and Weyl exceptional rings. We peek into EP-associated emerging technologies, in particular focusing on the influence of noise for sensing near EPs, improving the efficiency in asymmetric transmission based on EPs, optical isolators in nonlinear EP systems and novel concepts to implement EPs in topological photonics. We also discuss the constraints and limitations of the applications relying on EPs, and offer parting thoughts about promising ways to tackle them for advanced nanophotonic applications.

Time reflection is a uniform inversion of the temporal evolution of a signal, which arises when an abrupt change in the properties of the host material occurs uniformly in space. At such a time interface, a portion of the input signal is time reversed, and its frequency spectrum is homogeneously translated as its momentum is conserved, forming the temporal counterpart of a spatial interface. Combinations of time interfaces, forming time metamaterials and Floquet matter, exploit the interference of multiple time reflections for extreme wave manipulation, leveraging time as an additional degree of freedom. Here we report the observation of photonic time reflection and associated broadband frequency translation in a switched transmission-line metamaterial whose effective capacitance is homogeneously and abruptly changed via a synchronized array of switches. A pair of temporal interfaces are combined to demonstrate time-reflection-induced wave interference, realizing the temporal counterpart of a Fabry–Pérot cavity. Our results establish the foundational building blocks to realize time metamaterials and Floquet photonic crystals, with opportunities for extreme photon manipulation in space and time.

Metasurfaces have been rapidly advancing our command over the many degrees of freedom of light; however, so far, they have been mostly limited to manipulating light in free space. Metasurfaces integrated on top of guided-wave photonic systems have been explored to control the scattering of light off-chip with enhanced functionalities—namely, the point-by-point manipulation of amplitude, phase or polarization. However, these efforts have so far been limited to controlling one or two optical degrees of freedom at best, as well as device configurations much more complex compared with conventional grating couplers. Here we introduce leaky-wave metasurfaces, which are based on symmetry-broken photonic crystal slabs that support quasi-bound states in the continuum. This platform has a compact form factor equivalent to the one of grating couplers, but it provides full command over the amplitude, phase and polarization (four optical degrees of freedom) across large apertures. We present devices for phase and amplitude control at a fixed polarization state, and devices controlling all the four optical degrees of freedom for operation at a wavelength of 1.55 μm. Merging the fields of guided and free-space optics through the hybrid nature of quasi-bound states in the continuum, our leaky-wave metasurfaces may find applications in imaging, communications, augmented reality, quantum optics, LIDAR and integrated photonic systems.

As standard microelectronic technology approaches fundamental limitations in speed and power consumption, novel computing strategies are strongly needed. Analogue optical computing enables the processing of large amounts of data at a negligible energy cost and high speeds. Based on these principles, ultrathin optical metasurfaces have been recently explored to process large images in real time, in particular for edge detection. By incorporating feedback, it has also recently been shown that metamaterials can be tailored to solve complex mathematical problems in the analogue domain, although these efforts have so far been limited to guided-wave systems and bulky set-ups. Here, we present an ultrathin Si metasurface-based platform for analogue computing that is able to solve Fredholm integral equations of the second kind using free-space visible radiation. A Si-based metagrating was inverse-designed to implement the scattering matrix synthesizing a prescribed kernel corresponding to the mathematical problem of interest. Next, a semitransparent mirror was incorporated into the sample to provide adequate feedback and thus perform the required Neumann series, solving the corresponding equation in the analogue domain at the speed of light. Visible wavelength operation enables a highly compact, ultrathin device that can be interrogated from free space, implying high processing speeds and the possibility of on-chip integration.

Topological photonics holds the promise for enhanced robustness of light localization and propagation enabled by the global symmetries of the system. While traditional designs of topological structures rely on lattice symmetries, there is an alternative strategy based on accidentally degenerate modes of the individual meta-atoms. Using this concept, we experimentally realize topological edge state in an array of silicon nanostructured waveguides, each hosting a pair of degenerate modes at telecom wavelengths. Exploiting the hybrid nature of the topological mode, we implement its coherent control by adjusting the phase between the degenerate modes and demonstrating selective excitation of bulk or edge states. The resulting field distribution is imaged via third harmonic generation showing the localization of topological modes as a function of the relative phase of the excitations. Our results highlight the impact of engineered accidental degeneracies on the formation of topological phases, extending the opportunities stemming from topological nanophotonic systems.

Periodic arrays can support highly nontrivial modal dispersion, stemming from the interplay between localized resonances of the array elements and distributed resonances supported by the lattice. Recently, intentional defects in the periodicity, i.e., broken in situsymmetries, have been attracting significant attention as a powerful degree of freedom for dispersion control. Here we explore highly nontrivial dispersion features in the resonant response of linear arrays of plasmonic particles, including the emergence of braiding and band knots caused by band folding. We show that these phenomena can be achieved within simple dipolar arrays for which we can derive closed-form expressions for the dispersion relation. These phenomena showcase powerful opportunities stemming from broken symmetries for extreme dispersion engineering, with a wide range of applications, from plasma physics to topological wave phenomena. Our theoretical model can also be generalized to higher dimensions to explore higher-order symmetries, e.g., glide symmetry and quasi-periodicity.

Atomic-level defects in van der Waals (vdW) materials are essential building blocks for quantum technologies and quantum sensing applications. The layered magnetic semiconductor CrSBr is an outstanding candidate for exploring optically active defects because of a direct gap, in addition to a rich magnetic phase diagram, including a recently hypothesized defect-induced magnetic order at low temperature. Here, we show optically active defects in CrSBr that are probes of the local magnetic environment. We observe a spectrally narrow (1 meV) defect emission in CrSBr that is correlated with both the bulk magnetic order and an additional low-temperature, defect-induced magnetic order. We elucidate the origin of this magnetic order in the context of local and nonlocal exchange coupling effects. Our work establishes vdW magnets like CrSBr as an exceptional platform to optically study defects that are correlated with the magnetic lattice. We anticipate that controlled defect creation allows for tailor-made complex magnetic textures and phases with direct optical access.

Coherent wave control exploits the interference among multiple waves impinging on a system to suppress or enhance outgoing signals based on their relative phase and amplitude. This process inherently requires the combination of energy exchanges among the waves and spatial interfaces to tailor their scattering. Here we explore the temporal analogue of this phenomenon, based on time interfaces that support instantaneous non-conservative scattering events for photons. Based on this mechanism, we demonstrate ultrabroadband temporal coherent wave control and the photonic analogue of mechanical collisions with phase-tunable elastic features. We apply them to erase, enhance and reshape arbitrary pulses by suitably tailoring the amplitude and phase of counterpropagating signals. Our findings provide a pathway to effectively sculpt broadband light with light without requiring spatial boundaries, within an ultrafast and low-energy platform.

Non-reciprocal devices—in which light is transmitted with different efficiencies along opposite directions—are key technologies for modern photonic applications, yet their compact and miniaturized implementation remains an open challenge. Among different avenues, nonlinearity-induced non-reciprocity has attracted significant attention due to the absence of external bias and the ease of integrability within conventional material platforms. So far, nonlinearity-induced non-reciprocity has been demonstrated only in guided platforms using high-quality-factor resonators. Here we demonstrate ultrathin optical metasurfaces with a large non-reciprocal response for free-space radiation based on silicon thermo-optic nonlinearities. Our metasurfaces combine an out-of-plane asymmetry—necessary to obtain non-reciprocity—with in-plane broken symmetry, which finely tunes the radiative linewidth of quasi-bound states in the continuum. Third-order thermo-optic nonlinearities, engaged by the quasi-bound state in the continuum, are shown to enable over 10 dB of non-reciprocal transmission and less than 3 dB of insertion loss, for impinging average intensities smaller than 3 kW cm–2. Numerical calculations suggest that the build-up and relaxation times of the non-reciprocal response can approach sub-microsecond scales, only limited by thermal dissipation. The demonstrated devices merge the field of non-reciprocity with ultrathin metasurface technologies, offering an exciting functionality for signal processing and routing, communications and protection of high-power laser cavities.

Non-Hermitian wave engineering has attracted a surge of interest in photonics in recent years. Prominent non-Hermitian phenomena include coherent perfect absorption and its generalization, reflectionless scattering modes, in which electromagnetic scattering at the input ports is suppressed due to critical coupling with the power leaked to output ports, and interference phenomena. These concepts are ideally suited to enable real-time dynamic control over absorption, scattering and radiation. Nonetheless, reflectionless scattering modes have not been observed in complex photonic platforms involving open systems and multiple inputs. Here we demonstrate the emergence of reflectionless scattering modes in a chaotic photonic microcavity involving over a thousand optical modes. We model the optical fields in a silicon stadium microcavity within a quasi-normal mode expansion, which is able to capture a dense family of reflection zeros at the input ports, associated with reflectionless scattering modes. We observe non-Hermitian degeneracies of reflectionless scattering modes in the telecommunication wavelength band, enabling efficient dynamic control over light radiation from the cavity.

Abstract

Nonreciprocity originating from classical interactions among nonlinear scatterers has been attracting increasing attention in the quantum community, offering a promising tool to control excitation transfer for quantum information processing and quantum computing. In this work, we explore the possibility of realizing largely nonreciprocal total cross sections for a pair of quantum metasurfaces formed by two parallel periodic arrays of two-level atoms. We show that large nonreciprocal responses can be obtained in such nonlinear systems by controlling the position of the atoms and their transition frequencies, without requiring that the environment in which the atoms are placed is nonreciprocal. We demonstrate the connection of this effect with the asymmetric population of a slowly decaying dark state, which is critical to obtain large nonreciprocal responses.

We investigate symmetry-selective surface-mode excitation in a general periodically time-modulated double-layer system, where the modulation of the two layers has a constant phase difference. By deriving a semi-analytic transfer matrix formalism of a Drude-dispersive double-layer structure with periodic time-modulation, we calculate the scattering amplitudes and the corresponding transmission coefficient. Our results show that the phase-difference between the modulation of the two sheets plays an essential role in significantly enhancing and selectively exciting either the even or odd surface mode with high efficiency. We verify our calculations with full-wave time-domain simulations, showing that efficient switching between the surface-wave excitation of the two distinct modal channels can be achieved, even under illumination from a single off-resonant Gaussian pulse, by controlling the phase difference between the two modulations. Our results pave the way towards ultrafast, symmetry-selective mode excitation and switching via temporal modulation.

The lattice symmetry of a crystal is one of the most important factors in determining its physical properties. Particularly, low-symmetry crystals offer powerful opportunities to control light propagation, polarization and phase1–4. Materials featuring extreme optical anisotropy can support a hyperbolic response, enabling coupled light–matter interactions, also known as polaritons, with highly directional propagation and compression of light to deeply sub-wavelength scales5. Here we show that monoclinic crystals can support hyperbolic shear polaritons, a new polariton class arising in the mid-infrared to far-infrared due to shear phenomena in the dielectric response. This feature emerges in materials in which the dielectric tensor cannot be diagonalized, that is, in low-symmetry monoclinic and triclinic crystals in which several oscillators with non-orthogonal relative orientations contribute to the optical response6,7. Hyperbolic shear polaritons complement previous observations of hyperbolic phonon polaritons in orthorhombic1,3,4and hexagonal8,9crystal systems, unveiling new features, such as the continuous evolution of their propagation direction with frequency, tilted wavefronts and asymmetric responses. The interplay between diagonal loss and off-diagonal shear phenomena in the dielectric response of these materials has implications for new forms of non-Hermitian and topological photonic states. We anticipate that our results will motivate new directions for polariton physics in low-symmetry materials, which include geological minerals10, many common oxides11and organic crystals12, greatly expanding the material base and extending design opportunities for compact photonic devices.

Various optical crystals possess permittivity components of opposite signs along different principal directions in the mid-infrared regime, exhibiting exotic anisotropic phonon resonances. Such materials with hyperbolic polaritons—hybrid light–matter quasiparticles with open isofrequency contours—feature large-momenta optical modes and wave confinement that make them promising for nanophotonic on-chip technologies. So far, hyperbolic polaritons have been observed and characterized in crystals with high symmetry including hexagonal (boron nitride), trigonal (calcite) and orthorhombic (α-MoO3or α-V2O5) crystals, where they obey certain propagation patterns. However, lower-symmetry materials such as monoclinic crystals were recently demonstrated to offer richer opportunities for polaritonic phenomena. Here, using scanning near-field optical microscopy, we report the direct real-space nanoscale imaging of symmetry-broken hyperbolic phonon polaritons in monoclinic CdWO4crystals, and showcase inherently asymmetric polariton excitation and propagation associated with the nanoscale shear phenomena. We also introduce a quantitative theoretical model to describe these polaritons that leads to schemes to enhance crystal asymmetry via the damping loss of phonon modes. Ultimately, our findings show that polaritonic nanophotonics is attainable using natural materials with low symmetry, favouring a versatile and general way to manipulate light at the nanoscale.

Topological phases have been studied in photonic, acoustic and phononic metamaterials, promising a range of applications. Such topological modes usually stem from collective resonant effects in periodic lattices. One may, therefore, expect similar features to be forbidden for thermal diffusion that is purely dissipative and mostly incoherent, prohibiting collective resonances. Here we report the discovery of diffusion-based topological states supported by spatiotemporally modulated advections stacked over a fluidic surface. This arrangement imitates a periodic propagating potential in an effective thermal lattice. We observe edge states in topologically non-trivial and bulk states in topologically trivial lattices. Interface states form at boundaries between these two types of lattice, manifesting inhomogeneous thermal properties on the fluidic surface. Our findings establish a framework for topological diffusion and thermal edge or bulk states, and it may allow a distinct mechanism for the flexible manipulation of diffusive phenomena for robust heat and mass transfer.

Nonlinear wave–matter interactions may give rise to solitons, phenomena that feature inherent stability in wave propagation and unusual spectral characteristics. Solitons have been created in a variety of physical systems and have had important roles in a broad range of applications, including communications, spectroscopy and metrology1–4. In recent years, the realization of dissipative Kerr optical solitons in microcavities has led to the generation of frequency combs in a chip-scale platform5–10. Within a cavity, photons can interact with mechanical modes. Cavity optomechanics has found applications for frequency conversion, such as microwave-to-optical or radio-frequency-to-optical11–13, of interest for communications and interfacing quantum systems operating at different frequencies. Here we report the observation of mechanical micro-solitons excited by optical fields in an optomechanical microresonator, expanding soliton generation in optical resonators to a different spectral window. The optical field circulating along the circumference of a whispering gallery mode resonator triggers a mechanical nonlinearity through optomechanical coupling, which in turn induces a time-varying periodic modulation on the propagating mechanical mode, leading to a tailored modal dispersion. Stable localized mechanical wave packets—mechanical solitons—can be realized when the mechanical loss is compensated by phonon gain and the optomechanical nonlinearity is balanced by the tailored modal dispersion. The realization of mechanical micro-solitons driven by light opens up new avenues for optomechanical technologies14and may find applications in acoustic sensing, information processing, energy storage, communications and surface acoustic wave technology.

Polaritons are hybrid excitations of matter and photons. In recent years, polaritons in van der Waals nanomaterials—known as van der Waals polaritons—have shown great promise to guide the flow of light at the nanoscale over spectral regions ranging from the visible to the terahertz. A vibrant research field based on manipulating strong light–matter interactions in the form of polaritons, supported by these atomically thin van der Waals nanomaterials, is emerging for advanced nanophotonic and opto-electronic applications. Here we provide an overview of the state of the art of exploiting interface optics—such as refractive optics, meta-optics and moiré engineering—for the control of van der Waals polaritons. This enhanced control over van der Waals polaritons at the nanoscale has not only unveiled many new phenomena, but has also inspired valuable applications—including new avenues for nano-imaging, sensing, on-chip optical circuitry, and potentially many others in the years to come.

Topological insulators (TIs) implemented in synthetic dimensions have recently emerged as an attractive platform to explore higher-dimensional topological phases in compact systems. Here, we present a two-dimensional TI within a single-ring resonator enabled by acousto-optic interactions and electro-optic modulation. In our system, the synthetic dimensions are represented by the range of discrete optical modes supported by the ring resonator and their azimuthal angular order. Gauge fields responsible for the topological order in the synthetic lattice are realized by an array of racetrack couplers coupled to the resonator. We reveal topological bulk and chiral edge bands in time-resolved absorption/transmission spectra, and we show that the proposed system can support reconfigurable and nonreciprocal frequency conversion controlled by the probe frequency detuning. Interestingly, we also show that realistic phase mismatch and disorder in acousto-optic scattering can enable an amorphous TI phase in synthetic space, demonstrating robust nonreciprocal frequency conversion in this regime.

Polaritons in anisotropic materials result in exotic optical features, which can provide opportunities to control light at the nanoscale1–10. So far these polaritons have been limited to two classes: bulk polaritons, which propagate inside a material, and surface polaritons, which decay exponentially away from an interface. Here we report a near-field observation of ghost phonon polaritons, which propagate with in-plane hyperbolic dispersion on the surface of a polar uniaxial crystal and, at the same time, exhibit oblique wavefronts in the bulk. Ghost polaritons are an atypical non-uniform surface wave solution of Maxwell’s equations, arising at the surface of uniaxial materials in which the optic axis is slanted with respect to the interface. They exhibit an unusual bi-state nature, being both propagating (phase-progressing) and evanescent (decaying) within the crystal bulk, in contrast to conventional surface waves that are purely evanescent away from the interface. Our real-space near-field imaging experiments reveal long-distance (over 20 micrometres), ray-like propagation of deeply subwavelength ghost polaritons across the surface, verifying long-range, directional and diffraction-less polariton propagation. At the same time, we show that control of the out-of-plane angle of the optic axis enables hyperbolic-to-elliptic topological transitions at fixed frequency, providing a route to tailor the band diagram topology of surface polariton waves. Our results demonstrate a polaritonic wave phenomenon with unique opportunities to tailor nanoscale light in natural anisotropic crystals.

Fano resonances feature an asymmetric lineshape with controllable linewidth, stemming from the interplay between bright and dark resonances. They provide efficient opportunities to shape the scattering lineshape, but they usually lack flexibility and tunability and are hindered by loss in passive systems. Here, we explore a hybrid parity-time (PT) and anti-parity-time (APT) symmetric system supporting unitary scattering features with highly tunable Fano resonances. The PT-APT-symmetric system can be envisioned in nanophotonic and microwave circuit implementations, allowing for real-time control of the scattering lineshape and its underlying singularities. Our study shows the opportunities enabled by non-Hermitian platforms to control scattering lineshapes for a plethora of photonic, electronic, and quantum systems, with potential for high-resolution imaging, switching, sensing, and multiplexing.
