We investigate how the sharing of peer success on an enterprise digital platform influences other workers’ work effort. We focus on one important advantage that organizations gain from using digital platforms—the ability to regulate the content of the messages by incorporating various elements about peers. Specifically, we examined two types of peer success messages: messages that highlight a peer’s effort (i.e., effort-focused success messages) and messages that highlight a peer’s ability (i.e., ability-focused success messages). Using data from a group of sales workers in an information technology service company, as well as an experiment with online participants, we found that both ability-focused success messages and effort-focused success messages can motivate workers to work harder, although we observed important heterogeneity in the responses. In particular, workers’ responses to effort-focused messages remained strong regardless of social distance between the worker and the peer. In contrast, workers’ response to ability-focused messages was stronger when the messages praised the ability of peers who were socially close but not that of peers who were socially distant. BACKGROUND: We studied whether increased systolic blood pressure (SBP), as determined by auscultatory SBP, ambulatory SBP, and the number of cardiovascular health risk indicators, are associated with neurocognition in adolescents. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 365 adolescents (mean age, 15.5 years) from 6 academic medical centers in the United States. The sample was 59.5% male, 52.6% White, with 23.9% of the caregivers having less than or equal to a high school degree. Primary exposures included the following: auscultatory SBP, ambulatory SBP, and the number of cardiovascular risk factors. Neurocognitive outcomes comprised nonverbal IQ, attention, and parent ratings of executive functions. RESULTS: After examining the models for the effects of targeted covariates (eg, maternal education), higher auscultatory SBP was associated with lower nonverbal IQ (β=−1.39; P <0.001) and verbal attention (β=−2.39; P <0.05); higher ambulatory 24 hours. SBP (β=−21.39; P <0.05) and wake SBP (β=−21.62; P <0.05) were related to verbal attention; and all 3 ambulatory blood pressure measures were related to sustained attention accounting for small to medium amounts of variance (adjusted R2=0.08–0.09). Higher ambulatory blood pressure sleep SBP also was significantly associated with parent ratings of behavior regulation (β=12.61; P <0.05). These associations remained stable after a sensitivity analysis removed cases with hypertension. Number of cardiovascular risk factors performed similarly, with more risk factors being associated with lower nonverbal IQ (β=−1.35; P <0.01), verbal attention (β=−1.23; P <0.01), and all parent ratings of executive functions. CONCLUSIONS: Elevated SBP, even below the hypertension range, and general cardiovascular health are associated with neurocognitive outcomes in adolescents. To function effectively, nuclear power plants rely on the effective filtration of air, water, and process fluids, examples of which include inlet sea water, reactor coolant, plant drinking water, and moderator purification. Filtration assets degrade over time, which impairs their filtering performance and reduces the flow rate. Being able to determine the remaining useful life (RUL) of a filter could result in benefits, particularly when moving from a time-based to a condition-based maintenance strategy that would optimize the filter replacement procedure and reduce early replacement of filters that are still fit for purpose. For many filter applications, a time-based strategy is sufficient. For strategically important assets, such as fueling machines, there are benefits to be gained from the development of predictive maintenance strategies. In this paper, we propose a predictive condition-based strategy using differential pressure data as a proxy for filter health. The key objective in this work was the creation of a model that could predict a filter asset RUL. The differential pressure for 7 to 14 days is predicted by a heuristic-based regression model of the history of each filter. This approach has been demonstrated using a civil nuclear generation application but could be applied to wider applications. Anticoagulant choice can have significant effect on complete blood counts of reptiles and has not been reported in bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps). Whole blood was collected from 14 captive individuals and aliquoted into separate blood tubes containing dipotassium ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and lithium heparin. Samples were shipped and processed within 24 h. A CBC, including a WBC count using a commercial phloxine method, was performed on blood from both tubes. A WBC estimate, WBC differential, and morphologic review were performed on blood smears made from the anticoagulated blood, as well as on a direct blood smear made from anticoagulant-free blood. Some CBC values were significantly different between the EDTA and lithium heparin samples. Hematologic data generated from direct blood smears were more similar to data from EDTA samples than to data from lithium heparin samples. Additionally, multiple lithium heparin samples had poor phloxine stain uptake and leukocyte clumping, so that many WBC parameters were altered or unreportable. These results support EDTA as an appropriate anticoagulant for bearded dragon hematologic evaluation and suggest it may be superior to heparin for some individuals in generating a WBC count using a commercial phloxine method. Hemodialysis (HD) access for patients with end-stage renal disease is a steadily increasing necessity, and maintaining patency of native or synthetic fistulas can be challenging. The main physiologic changes of an HD access that cause it to fail are inflow or outflow vessel stenosis or access thrombosis. These are propagated by factors intrinsic to end-stage renal disease, altered hemodynamics from a fistula, and typically further exacerbated by associated comorbidities. Diagnosis of fistula dysfunction can be made with a combination of history, physical examination, HD dynamic measurements, laboratory findings, and invasive or noninvasive imaging. Stenoses can be managed with endovascular interventions, including angioplasty with or without stenting, or open operations. Thrombosis of HD access, which is most often a result of an underlying stenosis, can be managed similarly with either endovascular or surgical thrombectomy with adjunctive treatment. Aromatase inhibitors are prescribed in breast cancer due to their associated lower rate of cancer recurrence compared to tamoxifen. However, aromatase inhibitor‐induced arthralgia (AIIA) is one of the leading causes of treatment nonadherence, increasing the risk of cancer recurrence. The pathophysiology of AIIA is poorly understood, and although current recommendations for AIIA include lifestyle changes and analgesics depending on the severity of symptoms, there is no established effective treatment. The aim of this study is to explore the presentation and mechanism of AIIA and investigate the feasibility and efficacy of different exercise interventions (aerobic, resistance, aerobic and resistance combined, and yoga or tai chi) in patients with AIIA to guide the development of formal exercise prescription guidelines. Findings indicate that a mixed‐modality regimen of aerobic and resistance exercises is feasible and safe and may serve the most benefit in improving joint pain, functionality, and quality of life. More specifically, the weekly regimen should consist of 150 min of aerobic exercise with two sessions of at least six resistance exercises, 8 to 12 repetitions, three sets each. Supplementary yoga and tai chi may be recommended twice a week depending on a patient's target symptoms. Yoga was associated with improved physical functionality, whereas tai chi was related to improvements in mental health. However, the feasibility and impact of combined aerobic and resistance exercise protocols with yoga or tai chi in our target population were not investigated in this review. The use of long-acting injectable cabotegravir/rilpivirine (LAI-CAB/RPV) as maintenance therapy for persons with HIV (PWH), which may improve treatment access and outcomes, though real-world data on uptake are limited, was studied at two Ryan White clinics in Atlanta, Georgia. Among PWH referred from 4/1/2021 to 9/15/2022 to switch to LAI-CAB/RPV, characteristics were ascertained at time of referral; and disposition (initiated; ineligible; uninterested; pending) was recorded as of 9/15/2022. Among patients initiated on CAB/RPV, we assessed the drug procurement process and clinical outcomes through 6/1/2023. Among 149 PWH referred, 74/149 (50%) initiated CAB/RPV as of 9/15/2022, of whom, characteristics were median age 47 (Q1-Q3 36–55) years, 16% cisgender female, 72% Black race, median HIV duration 15 (Q1–Q3 9–19) years, and 64% had commercial health insurance. Of the 75 PWH not initiated, 35 were ineligible owing to a clinical concern (n = 16) or insurance issue (n = 19); 15 patients changed their mind about switching; and 25 were pending eligibility review or therapy initiation. Median time from CAB/RPV prescription to initiation was 46 (Q1–Q3 29–78) days. Of 731 total injections administered (median 11 injections/patient), 95% were given within 7 days of the target treatment date. Nearly all patients were virally suppressed upon referral and remained suppressed through follow-up. At two clinics in the U.S. South, half of the patients referred for LAI-CAB/RPV successfully accessed therapy nearly 2 years after U.S. drug approval. We identified barriers to uptake at the patient and structural levels, highlighting key areas to invest resource and personnel support to sustain and scale long-acting antiretroviral therapy programming. Positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) using [18F]-fluoro-2-deoxy- D -glucose (FDG) has become the mainstay imaging modality for evaluating oncology patients with certain cancers. The most common FDG PET/CT applications include staging/restaging, assessing response to therapy and detecting tumor recurrence. It is important to be aware of potential pitfalls and technical artifacts on PET/CT in the chest and abdomen to ensure accurate interpretation, avoid unnecessary intervention and optimize patient care. Determining the timing and cause for ancient hillslope failures is challenging in the western United States, yet it is critical because it can inform ground-motion estimates for large-to-great earthquakes on plate-boundary faults. We identify two preinstumental debris avalanches (3 × 10-6 and 4.28 × 106 m³) in the Coast Ranges of northern California. These debris avalanches are well suited for studying the timing (to the exact year) and trigger, as the densely forested landscape enables effective use of dendrochronology and high-resolution radiocarbon to pinpoint the time of failure, and the legacy of landslide studies in the region provides context for evaluating a seismic trigger as the most likely triggering mechanism. Neither of the debris avalanches was triggered by the largest precipitation event of the instrumental record in 1964 C.E., and the two debris avalanche sites are physiographically suited to experience topographic amplification of seismic shaking. Through a suite of geologic and dendrochronologic evidence, we establish the likely time of failure of the two debris avalanches as 1906 C.E. and 933 C.E. The failure of the younger landslide coincides with the 1906 C.E. San Francisco earthquake on the Pacific/North American plate boundary, whereas the older landslide dates to 933 C.E., within the broad age range (850-966 C.E.) of a likely megathrust earthquake on the Cascadia subduction zone as recorded in coastal marshes in Humboldt Bay, California. If the older landslide was triggered by a subduction earthquake, then the precise age of the 933 C.E. debris avalanche would trim the uncertainty on a Cascadia subduction zone event from 116 yr to 1 yr. Utilizing debris avalanche records from sites suitable to record seismic shaking improves understanding of plate-boundary earthquake timing and extent of shaking. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)-operated ShakeAlert® system is the United States West Coast earthquake early warning system (Given et al., 2018). In this study we detail ShakeAlert's performance during some of the largest events seen by the system thus far. Statewide public alerting using ShakeAlert messages was authorized in California in October 2019. Over the next few years, public alerts were expanded into Oregon and then into Washington (U.S. Geological Survey, 2024). ShakeAlert source results are routinely compared to the USGS Comprehensive Catalog (ComCat; Guy et al., 2015; U.S. Geological Survey, Earthquake Hazards Program, 2017), which contains the earthquake location and magnitude determined using complete waveform data. M 4.5 and larger is the threshold used for public alerting and was deliberately set below the level where damage is likely to compensate for cases where the system underestimates the magnitude. Between 17 October 2019 and 1 September 2023, the ShakeAlert system created 95 events with maximum magnitude estimates of M =4.5, the public alerting threshold. 94 of the 95 events were due to real earthquakes. Seven were categorized "false" per ShakeAlert's internal definition that there was no matching catalog event within 100 km and 30 s of origin time; however, all but one of these were real earthquakes that were poorly located, primarily because they were at the edges of the seismic network. Three detected events were labeled "missed" because they were very poorly located (>100 km location error). In addition, the system did not produce solutions for four ComCat events M =4.5 (U.S. Geological Survey, Earthquake Hazards Program, 2017), which were all at the edge of the alerting and network boundaries. The ShakeAlert system has accurately detected the majority of earthquakes that have occurred within the operational region since completing the public rollout, and alerts from the system have been delivered to millions of cell phone users throughout the West Coast. Combating climate change and achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are two important challenges facing humanity. Natural climate solutions (NCSs) can contribute to the achievement of these two commitments but can also generate conflicting trade‐offs. Here, we reviewed the literature and drew on expert knowledge to assess the co‐benefits of and trade‐offs between 150 SDG targets and NCSs within 12 selected ecosystems. We demonstrate that terrestrial, coastal, and marine NCSs enable the attainment of different sets of SDG targets, with low redundancy. Implementing NCSs in various ecosystems would therefore maximize achievement of SDG targets but would also induce trade‐offs, particularly if best practices are not followed. Reliance on NCSs at large scales will require that these trade‐offs be taken into consideration to ensure the simultaneous realization of positive climate outcomes and multiple SDG targets for diverse stakeholders. Farmers' local knowledge represents an important yet underutilised resource in climate adaptation. The emergence of online region-specific climate projections presents an opportunity to leverage farmers expertise in reading and responding to short-term weather forecasts as a design input into longer-term climate services. This paper leverages insights gained through a detailed exploration of existing everyday weather application (app) practices from 25 Australian farmers across different commodities. Through the lens of Social Practice Theory, the paper details how farmers chose, accessed and utilised online weather information in decision-making. Farmers accessed between one and six weather apps daily, with perceived accuracy the largest determinant of adoption. The paper provides detailed knowledge of farmers' practices accessing online weather information and based on these practices, recommends four considerations for the design of multi-decadal online climate services including: (1) Leveraging tacit knowledge and existing practices of tinkering and appropriation. (2) Supporting the triangulation and comparison practices common to use of weather apps. (3) Setting expectations regarding the perceived accuracy of climate projections. (4) Ensuring climate information is available and salient when climate-relevant decisions are made. Through these considerations, the paper aims to benefit end-users of climate services by ensuring climate information responds to user needs and fits within existing practices. Breast cancer is the most common malignancy among women in the United Kingdom. Surgical management commonly comprises mastectomy and reconstruction, of which implant-based breast reconstruction (IBBR) is the most prevalent. Acellular dermal matrices (ADM) are widely used in pre-pectoral IBBR; however, there is limited high-quality evidence supporting their efficacy. This study aimed to establish an equipoise via an expert consensus survey. An online survey was designed with a steering group of experts. Questions covered participant information, opinions regarding surgical outcomes with ADM use in pre-pectoral IBBR and opinions regarding the available scientific evidence on the topic. The survey was advertised via national and international professional organisations. Quantitative and qualitative analyses were performed. Thirty-two participants from the UK, Italy and Australia completed the survey. Key findings of this study included disagreement among participants regarding the surgical outcomes associated with ADM use. Participants who believed that ADM reduced the risk of short-term complications and implant failure/explantation comprised a minority (21.9%). Participants who felt that ADM use improved cosmetic outcomes and reduced long-term complications were a relative majority at 43.8% and 40.6%, respectively. Furthermore, 56.3% of the participants felt that there was scarce scientific evidence on the topic. This study provides insights from international surgeons, establishing a lack of consensus on surgical outcomes, efficacy and evidence-base supporting the use of ADMs in pre-pectoral IBBR. Given this clinical equipoise, alongside the growing burden of breast cancer associated morbidity and need for reconstruction, the implications of this study are that large-scale, prospective, randomised-controlled data are needed to establish whether ADM use in pre-pectoral breast reconstruction improves the outcomes. No previous research provided a comprehensive review of the bicycle volume estimation techniques assessing the current research gaps in data and modeling makes it challenging to understand the most effective and accurate strategies to estimate bicycle volumes. This article provides a detailed review of 58 studies published from 1996 to 2021. The review results indicate that conventional modeling approaches such as Linear regression, Negative Binomial, Poisson regressions, and a factor-up method represent the most popular econometric statistical models for bicycle volume estimation, while a decision tree is popular among machine-learning-based techniques due to its simplicity and ease of application, interpretation, and estimation with small data sets. In addition, Strava data, Socio-demographic variables, and bicycle facilities significantly contribute to the predictions. The study documents the current research gaps and recommends future research directions to improve data source evaluations, variable creations, modeling, and scalability/transferability advancements. Ureteroceles are often diagnosed antenatally and incidentally and treated in a minimally invasive fashion with endoscopic puncture. Recent literature suggests that observation, or non-operative management, is an effective and viable management option in select patients with ureteroceles and certain radiologic findings, however there is no consensus on how to best select patients for non-operative management. To 1) determine if pediatric ureteroceles managed non-operatively require less or sooner secondary surgical intervention than those managed with up-front incision, 2) describe characteristics of success and failure in pediatric ureteroceles managed non-operatively, and 3) identify risk factors associated with receiving intervention and time to intervention. Of 287 ureteroceles, 65 (23%) were managed non-operatively and underwent secondary surgical intervention less frequently (9% vs. 34%, P < 0.01) and later (median age 40 vs. 20 months) than those managed with puncture. Successful non-operative management was associated with fewer comorbidities, smaller ureterocele size, absence of vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) and high-grade VUR, single collecting system, lesser degree of hydronephrosis, ipsilateral MCDK and intravesical location. For all ureteroceles, high-grade VUR, duplex system, and female sex were associated with shorter time to secondary intervention (intervention after initial management). In the largest retrospective review of ureterocele management, smaller ureterocele size, absence of high-grade VUR, single system, ipsilateral MCDK and minimal hydronephrosis were factors that increased the efficacy of non-operative management of select pediatric ureteroceles. Furthermore, time to event analysis showed that non-operative management did not predispose patients to sooner secondary intervention (Figure). Lack of a standardized protocol for ureterocele management is a limitation of this single institution retrospective study as it introduces selection bias to the results, however few patients with low risk characteristics underwent puncture and no high risk patients were observed. Smaller ureterocele size, absence of high-grade VUR, single system, ipsilateral MCDK and minimal hydronephrosis are factors that may increase the efficacy of non-operative management of select pediatric ureteroceles, which may delay or avoid secondary surgical intervention.
