Background: Resorbable mesh and porous polyethylene are frequently used alloplastic materials for the treatment of the orbital blowout fractures. The literature lacks reports comparing their long-term effects on experimental models.Objective: Our aim was to radiologically and histologically evaluate the effectiveness and safety of porous polyethylene and resorbable mesh in a rabbit orbital blowout fracture model.Methods: Twelve New Zealand white rabbits (24 orbits) were randomized to 4 groups. In group 1, only orbital floor dissection was done. In group 2, following orbital floor dissection, a 10-mm defect was created without any extra procedure. In group 3, following a 10-mm defect creation, a 12-mm-round cut porous polyethylene was placed on the defect. In group 4, following a 10-mm defect creation, a 12-mm-round cut resorbable mesh was placed on the defect. Computed tomographic analysis was performed during follow-up period. Orbital floors were evaluated histologically at month 6.Results: No clinical complications were observed during follow-up period. In radiological evaluation, there was no statistically significant difference between groups regarding bone formation. In histological evaluation, the connective tissue was denser, and organized and better bone formation was observed in group 3 and 4 when compared with other groups.Conclusion: Although no significant radiological changes were present, porous polyethylene and resorbable mesh performed better histologically. They were effective and well tolerated for reconstruction of the isolated orbital floor defects.

The authors aimed to present dental treatment of the cadaveric tooth in a transplanted maxilla in a patient with facial transplantation with bony framework and soft tissue envelope. The treatment procedure was scheduled after physical examination, and the final plan was designed according to the patient's special medical condition. The authors reported the first successful endodontic treatment of an allogeneic cadaveric donor tooth in a patient with facial transplantation. Dental disease represents a potential risk for infection in patients with allogeneic transplantation, which could affect the success of tissue transplantation and might lead to life-threatening conditions. The (re)treatment of the diseased teeth is possible even after the transplantation. The health of the teeth and jaws of the donor should be evaluated before transplantation, especially when maxilla or mandible transplantation is planned.

Rare craniofacial clefts have an incidence of at least 1 per 100,000 live births. A Tessier number 4 cleft is one of the most rare craniofacial clefts, with less than 50 cases being reported in the literature. Both soft and bony tissue abnormalities take place in the cleft morphology, so not only clinical examination of the maxillofacial region but a detailed radiological workup is needed to assess clearly the nature of the clefts. A patient with a Tessier number 4 cleft is presented, whose bony defect was obliterated with autogenous iliac bone graft chips and soft tissue reconstruction was performed with multiple Z-plasty flaps. Postoperative clinical and radiological results demonstrate fine healing and good cosmesis. Although controversy still exists about the treatment of facial clefts with early bone grafts, advantages of performing both bony and soft tissue reconstructions in a single session make this treatment a good alternative with satisfactory clinical and radiological results.

Dirofilariasis is a rare zoonosis that is mainly seen with subcutaneous or pulmonary involvement. Natural hosts are dogs, cats, jackals, and raccoons; however, humans can rarely become an accidental host for the parasite. In the reported case, infection manifested as a subcutaneous nodule, representing a significant diagnostic challenge for both the surgeon and the pathologist. A case of a 62-year-old man with a premasseteric soft tissue mass caused by Dirofilaria repensis presented with histopathologic confirmation. The gluteal region is an important secondary sexual character itself and it has its place in the concept of the beauty in all communities. Interestingly, as far as we know, there is not any previous study addressing gluteal region morphology in an objective way in the aesthetic surgery literature. The aim of this study was to define the changes of the gluteal region morphology with aging and weight gain. Beside body weight, a total of five distances between predetermined anatomic points in gluteal region were measured on randomly selected 115 female volunteers, with their age ranging from 17 to 48 years (mean 22.7). All the records were analyzed by a correlation matrix using computer-based SPSS 7.5 program. As women grow older, the width of the gluteal region decreases and the gluteal sulcus elongates laterally and inferiorly. Contrary to aging, with weight gain the gluteal region becomes wider as the gluteal sulcus gets shorter. Although the subject does not sound new, our study is the first, documenting the changes in morphology of the gluteal region in relation to weight gain and aging in an objective way.

Although, one out of every eight women has a risk of developing breast cancer, the reported incidence of breast carcinoma detection in reduction mammaplasty materials is rather low. To our knowledge, specimen radiography, which is used for breast biopsies has not been used for the assessment of breast reduction materials. We investigated the applicability of specimen radiography and its potential benefits in detection of the breast pathologies, especially malignancies in reduction mammaplasty materials. Forty patients scheduled for reduction mammaplasty operation were included. In all cases an inferior pedicle reduction technique was preferred and the radiographs of the resected breast tissues were taken immediately. The radiographs were evaluated for any possible pathologic appearance and all abnormal findings were marked. For the histopathologic evaluation, in addition to the random sampling of the pathologist, any marked areas were also microscopically examined. In two cases fibrocystic changes were found in radiographs and the same results were obtained in the histological examination. No false negative mammogram was seen. Specimen radiography, which is applicable for breast reduction materials is an easy and cheap method and does not cause any patient discomfort. It seems that the radiographs of reduction mammaplasty materials are useful to provide guidance to the pathologist during tissue sampling for microscopic examination especially when large amounts of breast tissue is excised.
