The mastoid process has attracted the attention of several researchers due to its protected position at the base of the skull and the fact that it is relatively compact, in addition to being highly resistant and dimorphic, considered as a gold standard anatomical structure in the determination of the sexual dimorphism of skulls. However, intrinsic and extrinsic factors may influence this anatomical structure over time, providing contradictory and ambiguous data. Therefore, other anatomical structures need to be evaluated concurrently with the mastoid process to provide better accuracy and reliability of skull sexual dimorphism data. Thus, the objective of this systematic review was to evaluate the degree of reliability of the mastoid process to determine sexual dimorphism compared to other dimorphic structures, since there are still no systematic reviews on the subject in the literature. This review follows the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) and was recorded in the Prospective International Systematic Reviews Registry (PROSPERO) (CRD 42023395167 Systematic Registry) (CRD420223). The inclusion criteria for selecting the studies were based on the PICO question: "Are skull anatomical structures reliable as alternatives to determine sexual dimorphism compared to the mastoid process?". A literature search for studies was performed in the MEDLINE Scopus, Web of Science, LILACS, and Cochrane Library databases. The Kappa agreement presented an approval level of (k = 0.93). This systematic review analyzed 13 ex-vivo studies published between 2008 and 2023. The risk of bias was considered low in 12 of the studies, and high in 1 study. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that even with the limitations of this systematic review, quantitative and qualitative analyses are essential in sexual identification of human skulls, and different anatomical structures can be used as references in addition to the mastoid process, with high reliability and precision, among them the; glabella, frontal profile, superciliary arch, bizygomatic width, maximum cranial length, and nasal height. • The degree of reliability in determining the sexual dimorphism is scarce. • The systematic review evaluated dry skulls for sexual dimorphism determination. • The systematic review analyzed 13 ex-vivo studies published between 2008 and 2023. • The risk of bias was considered low in 12 studies and high in 1 study. • Different anatomical structures can be used as references in addition to the mastoid process. The article focuses on a study which investigated the molting, habitat use, and sexual dimorphism of Black Skimmers (Rynchops niger) in the Lagoa do Peixe of Southern Brazil. An overview is given on sexual dimorphism of the shorebird species characterized by different body size and plumage. It also identifies the molecular sexing and correlations of size measurements between the sexes. It explains the development of discriminant models to sex birds through morphology based on morphometry.

Aim: The purpose of this study was to investigate the sexual dimorphism of the permanent mandibular canines in Albanian population of Kosovo. Methods: The study sample consisted of 204 dental students, selected from Dental School, Faculty of Medicine at University of Prishtina. The mesiodistal (MD) and buccolingual (BL) diameters of the mandibular canines were measured in dental cast using electronic digital calliper (Boss, Germany), which has an accuracy ± 0.01 mm. Results: The descriptive statistics and t-test were used. The results showed that in Kosovo-Albanian population mesiodistal and buccolingual diameter of the mandibular canines was larger in males than in females and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.0001). The buccolingual diameter of mandibular canines showed greater percentage of sexual dimorphism (8.50%) than mesiodistal diameter (5.35%). Conclusion: The present study confirmed sexual dental dimorphism in mesiodistal and buccolingual diameter of mandibular canines in Kosovo Albanian population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To determine the factors that affect recurrent stroke after acute ischemic stroke, specifically between male and female groups. We examined relative factors associated with recurrent stroke in Chinese patients with first-ever ischemic stroke. LASSO (least absolute shrinkage and selection operator) Cox regression were used to determine the predictors of recurrent stroke in the male and female groups. Next, We used Kaplan-Meier survival curves and interactions among these predictors to assess the association between relapse-related factors and recurrent stroke. During one year of follow-up, we documented 42 incidents of recurrent stroke in males and 15 in females. There was no significant difference in the overall recurrence rate between men and women. We finally identified three variables in males and one variable in females associated considerably with recurrent stroke by LASSO Cox regression. In females, good sleep appeared to be the most significant protective factor against recurrent stroke(hazard ratio [HR], 0.21; 95% CI, 0.08–0.57). In the male group, we found two risk factors: atherosclerotic burden (HR, 2.42; 95% CI, 1.30–4.51) and coronary heart disease (HR, 2.98; 95% CI, 1.16–7.66); and one protective factor: domestic/physical activities (HR, 0.45; 95% CI, 0.24–0.83). We also found an interaction between good sleep and domestic/physical activities in males (Pinteraction = 0.016). Our data indicate that the factors for recurrent stroke may differ by sex. Engaging in domestic/physical activities may substantially lower recurrent strokes in Chinese adult males. And good sleep in females appears to be more important in preventing stroke recurrence. Sex dimorphism is an important part in the identification process. The teeth are an excellent material for anthropological analysis and it can be considerate a valuable tool for sex determination. This study aims to analyze sexual dimorphism through the dental measures in Brazilian adults using three different statistical methods. The sample consists of maxillary and mandibular plaster models of 200 Caucasoid Brazilian individuals (100 male and 100 female), aged between 20 and 30 years. The mesiodistal (MD) and buccolingual (BL) diameters were measured of all teeth, excluding third molars. These measurements were performed directly on the plaster models. For statistical analysis we used the software STATA 12.0. Three techniques were performed to check the sexual dimorphism Logistic Regression, Linear Discriminant Function and Function Discriminant KNN. The significance level for all tests was 5%. The study population was composed of 200 research participants. Of this total, 100 were male and 100 were female. The average age was 24.33 years and the average height of 1.69 m. According to the results presented in this study we can conclude that it is possible to check the sexual dimorphism in Brazilian adults through dental measures. No differences were verified between homologous teeth. Dental elements of the male participants had higher averages than those of female participants. The best indicators for evaluating sexual dimorphism were measures of the canines and molars. Multivariate techniques were more accurate and KNN discriminant analysis showed the best results. Sex is one of the first features to be diagnosed in human identification, composing, with age, ancestry and stature, the so called "big four". Aim: The present study aimed to metrically analyze the sexual dimorphism in skulls of known age and sex from Rio Grande do Sul - Brazil. Methods: This was a crosssectional study of metrical analysis, which used a sample comprised of 209 human skulls (106 male and 103 female) older than 22 years old at the time of death, undamaged and without signs of trauma or abnormalities. The point nasion and the most superior points on the zygomaticotemporal sutures from each side were connected forming a triangle. This area was calculated using Heron's formula, and the results were submitted for statistical analysis. Results: All measurements showed significant values for sexual dimorphism. Through the area of the triangle, it was possible to determine sex with an accuracy of 83.97% for males and 83.50% for females. Conclusion: This simple method requires only a caliper, and still can be reliable for forensic human identification. It must be diffused and tested on other samples, and can be used as a good and inexpensive tool for experts in day-to-day practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Forensic physical anthropometry allows the determination of animal species and estimates sex, ancestry, age and height. Aim: To analyze the effectiveness of a cranioscopic/morphological evaluation for sex estimation with a sample of the Brazilian mixed-race population by conducting a qualitative visual assessment without prior knowledge of sex. Methods: This is a blind cross-sectional study that evaluated 30 cranial characteristics of 192 skulls with mandible, 108 male and 84 female individuals, aged 22 to 97 years, from the Osteological and Tomographic Biobank. The qualitative characteristics were classified and compared to the actual sex information of the Biobank database. The statistical analysis was used to calculate de Cohen's kappa coefficient, total percentage of agreement, sensitivity and specificity of visual sex classification. Results: Of the 30 cranial variables analyzed, 15 presented moderate degree of agreement, achieving value of Kappa test between 0.41-0.60: Glabella (Gl), Angle and lines (At), Mental eminence (Em), Mandible size (Tm), Cranial base (Bc), Mouth depth (Pb), Nasal aperture (Anl), Supraorbital region (Rs), Orbits (Orb), Mastoid processes (Pm), Alveolar arches (Aa), Zygomatic arch (Az), Orbital edge (Bo), Supraorbital protuberances (Pts), and Supramastoid crests and rugosity (Crsm). The Facial physiognomy (Ff) presented substantial reliability (0.61-0.80) with 89.8% sensitivity for male sex and 70.2% specificity. Conclusions: Cranial morphological characteristics present sexual dimorphism; however, in this study only 15 variables showed moderate degree of agreement and can be used in sex estimation. Only one variable (Ff) 81.2% total agreement with substantial reliability. Quantitative methods can be associated for safe sex estimation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is well established that inadequate nutrition during fetal life followed by postnatal overabundance programs adiposity and glucose intolerance. Studies addressing sexual dimorphism in developmental responses to a dietary mismatch are limited; the effect on blood pressure and renal function is understudied. Therefore, this study tested the hypothesis that a mismatch of prenatal and postnatal nutrition heightens cardiorenal and metabolic risk, outcomes that may vary by sex. Male and female offspring from sham-operated (control) or reduced uterine perfusion dams (growth restricted) were fed regular chow or a diet high in fat and sugar (enriched diet) from weaning until 6 months of age. Male and female offspring were assessed separately; 2-way ANOVA was used to investigate interactions between intrauterine growth-restricted and enriched-diet. Blood pressure was increased in all enriched-diet groups but did not differ in enriched-diet male or female growth-restricted versus same-sex control counterparts. Glomerular filtration rate was reduced in male growth-restricted regardless of diet; a decrease exacerbated by the enriched-diet suggesting the pathogenesis of increased blood pressure induced via an enriched-diet differs between male growth-restricted versus male control. An enriched diet was associated with glucose intolerance in male and female control but not male growth-restricted; the enriched diet exacerbated glucose intolerance in female growth-restricted. Thus, these findings indicate male growth-restricted are resistant to impaired glucose homeostasis, whereas female growth-restricted are susceptible to metabolic dysfunction regardless of postnatal diet. Hence, moderation of fat and sugar intake may be warranted in those born low birth weight to ensure minimal risk for chronic disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Epidemiologic studies provide broad-based evidence that men are at greater risk for developing destructive periodontal disease than women, even after adjusting for behavioral and environmental factors, such as oral hygiene practice and smoking. What requires clarification, however, is whether sex-specific differences in immune function provide a plausible bioloperiodintal disgic basis for a sexual dimorphism in susceptibility to destructive periodontal disease. This review examines evidence that might provide an underlying biologic basis for a sexual dimorphism in the prevalence and severity of destructive periodontal disease. Methods: A narrative review of the literature related to sexual dimorphism in pathogen-mediated inflammatory diseases and immune response was retrieved from searches of computerized databases (MEDLINE, PubMed, and SCOPUS). Results: Sex steroids exert profound effects on multiple immunologic parameters regulating both the amplification and resolution of inflammation. Strong evidence exists for sexual dimorphisms in immune function, involving both innate and acquired immunity. Injury and infection have been associated with higher levels of inflammatory cytokines, including interleukin- 113 and tumor necrosis factor-s, in men than women, paralleling observed sex-specific differences in periodontitis. Conclusion: Differential gene regulation, particularly in sex steroid-responsive genes, may contribute to a sexual dimorphism in susceptibility to destructive periodontal disease. Aim: To investigate the existence of sexual dimorphism between the first and second permanent molars. Methods: A cross-sectional, observational, blind study using comparative and statistical descriptive procedures. The sample included 50 pairs of plaster casts from undergraduate dental students (25 men/25 women) from the Federal University of Paraíba, João Pessoa/PB, Brazil, aged 20-26 years. Odontometric measurements of first and second maxillary/mandibular, right/left permanent molars were performed. Mesiodistal (MD) and buccolingual/palatal (BL/BP) widths and the distance between the lingual cusps of corresponding molars in opposite quadrants, were measured. The data were analyzed by Student's t test and ANOVA with Bonferroni (p⩽0.05). Results: The crowns of all first molars were statistically larger in men than in women (p<0.05). Maxillary and mandibular left second molars (#27 and #37) did not differ in their MD widths (p=0.66, p=0.75), whereas mandibular left and right second molars (#37 and #47) showed statistically different BL widths (p=0.007 and p=0.008). As to the distance between the lingual cusps, only the first left-to-right mandibular molars (#36-46) showed no sex dimorphism (p=0.107). Conclusions: Molars are larger in males than in females. Individually, first molars demonstrated higher evidence of sex distinction than second molars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
