- Abstract
Knowledge of the molecular basis of these new immunodeficiencies causing Mendelian susceptibility to mycobacteria, viruses, and pyogenic bacteria is required for a thorough understanding of their physiopathology, and for the treatment of affected children and genetic counseling. Novel PIDs should be sought in patients with unexplained infectious disease, even if all standard immunological explorations are normal as common infectious diseases may be favored by as yet unknown Mendelian immune disorders. The description of novel primary immunodeficiencies associated with susceptibility to pathogens is an exciting perspective, which will not only increase our understanding of immunity to pathogens, but will also be of benefit to the patients.
