Throughout Turkey's geography, migration has been an immutable reality and an essential part of its presence. Anatolia, the geography of civilizations shaped by migration, has not only been the destination of migration but also the path of migration. It has contributed along with the push and pull factors for migration movements at different times. The concepts of migration have become more prominent in academic literature, especially after the Syrian Civil War outbreak in March 2011. The prerequisite for living in peace with millions of refugees, who were supposed to be guests at first, but now seems permanent in our country, is to eliminate xenophobia. Xenophobia can only be combated with an essential humanistic attitude, which politics must support. Education is the most important means of achieving this humanistic attitude, and teaching history is one of the most appropriate subjects for eliminating xenophobia in education, which can help build a culture of coexistence. Therefore, the historicity of migration that is equated equating the historicity of migration with the history of humanity and representing migration with an emphasis on the humanistic side of it in history textbooks could be constructive ways to combat xenophobia and promote a healthy community life through education. The aim of this study is to analyze the level of representation of migration and relevant concepts in 2018 and 2019 compulsory high school history textbooks published by the MoNE (The Turkish Ministry of National Education). Based on this study's findings, it is recommended to improve the quality and quantity of the representation of migration and relevant concepts in the history textbooks for the youth to develop a sense of empathy with migrants on the threshold of adulthood. Once focused primarily on European and Chinese history, South Korea's world history courses are moving toward a global approach that spans multiple regions. In the midst of this curricular shift, we examined how Korean teachers conceptualize world history for themselves and for their instruction. We interviewed eight Korean teachers using card-sorting tasks and a think aloud methodology. Findings revealed that all participants sorted the cards differently when considering instruction compared to when they sorted cards for their own understanding, suggesting the role of teachers as instructional gatekeepers even in a country with a centralized National Curriculum. The Korean teachers discussed three instructional challenges in making these changes: connecting world historical events to students' present lives, unpacking for students events that spanned across large amounts of time and space, and managing students' preconceived notions or attitudes about different cultures. The ways in which participants dealt with these challenges differed. Additionally, in-service teachers made more complex connections between events and focused less on regions than did pre-service teachers. We discuss the cultural tools that Korean participants used in making instructional decisions as well as implications for curriculum development and teacher education for world history in South Korea and beyond. Essays on the state of Ohio history and Ohio history education as of 2016 are presented. Coinciding with the rise of Islamophobia in the United States is a small but growing set of educational scholarship around the curricular impact of and response to Islamophobia. The qualitative case study discussed in this manuscript aims to contribute to this conversation by investigating how Muslim girls from minority communities of interpretation (n=6) made sense of and responded to the curriculum on Islam in their Social Studies classes. The central finding describes how sample students responded to Islamophobia in the classroom by building bridges across differences. The objective of this research was to find a more effective method for the teaching of history to Chinese students studying in South Korean universities. Questionnaire surveys and interviews were conducted to investigate those students' level of knowledge and perceptions of Korean history. Then, in history classes, four teaching methods (comparative-historical, audiovisual, history and language, and rote memorization) were applied over two weeks. Before the treatment, Chinese students said that they liked the audiovisual teaching method the most, but after taking the classes, they preferred the teaching method comparing Korean and Chinese histories. Besides the finding that the comparative method was the most popular, the responses also showed that it was the most effective one in teaching history to Chinese students. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper provides an examination of the parallel efforts undertaken by the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities of Cyprus in order to revise their history curricula. Although the high nationalistic discourses which were elected to address the way in which history was taught in the two communities has come under considerable revision, both groups still have a long way to go before a totally 'critical' and 'apolitical' space is reached wherein they locate their approaches to history. By delving into the historical and current geopolitical background of Cyprus, this paper argues that the two communities share many commonalities that form the basis upon which an ethically communicative and discursive space may be developed for inter-communal dialogue via history teaching. The article presents an analysis of textbooks of the Australian Curriculum to determine the historical representation of the Gallipoli campaign, along with the ideological understandings of history conveyed to students and teachers. A historical overview of the Australian Curriculum is given. It offers information about the Gallipoli campaign and its importance to Australia's history. The focus of textbooks on Australian involvement in the Gallipoli conflict is noted.

This study examined the impact of varying levels of authentic pedagogy on student learning in select 9th and 10th grade history classrooms. The sample included four junior high and four high school teachers. During the initial phase of the study, instructional artifacts (tasks) and classroom observational data were collected and analyzed to determine the level of authentic pedagogy students experienced in their classes. Participating teachers were assigned an authentic pedagogy score based on this analysis that was used as the primary independent variable in subsequent statistical analyses designed to evaluate student learning outcomes. The findings suggest that the use of authentic tasks and instruction has a small, but positive correlation with student performance on the Alabama High School Graduation Exam in use at the time the study was done. A performance benefit was also noted for students who experienced multiple courses at the moderate authentic pedagogy level. The benefit, however, could be attributed to an advanced placement effect since advanced placement students in the sample were more likely to receive moderate authentic pedagogy. Over the last decade in Nunavut, the discipline of archaeology has been strongly encouraged to reconsider its practices and narratives concerning the past so as to better align with contemporary Inuit politics, culture and society. While archaeologists are open to new approaches for engaging Nunavut populations, there exist few tools within the discipline's repertoire for understanding history beyond the excavation and interpretation of material remains. This has become particularly apparent in situations where archaeologists use their trade to educate Inuit about their own history. This paper is a personal reflection on the act of teaching Arctic history, and describes my own attempts to better understand the greater context of history in the community of Cambridge Bay, Nunavut. This is ultimately accomplished by de-emphasizing the pedagogic value of material artifacts, and developing more grounded research methodologies to incorporate local understandings of how and why historical learning takes place. This article takes the educational vision of people's history an additional step, combining it with experiential approaches to democratic education that have developed over the past century. It places this vision within a global framework for human survival, democratic protections, creative research, and responsive education, and then presents at a local level the tools for students and adults to take control of their own historical study, control their heritage, and personalize the study of history on the very landscapes of their own communities. Through this approach, history becomes an exciting democratic exercise not merely in storytelling but in discovery of, participation in, and interaction with history on the very grounds of the community. The new approach to history, being tested in several communities, takes history as a collection of "stories," and roots and expands it to places, landscapes, and environment in everyday life, where history is unavoidable and where protecting and making history are ordinary household and community activities. The author talks about the idea that concept and skill of historiography is part of the historical process and should not be considered a final stage. The article offers information from an interview with professor Tom H.B. Symon, Chairman of the Commission of Canadian Studies from 1972 to 1984. Symon reflects on the need for a Commission and general attitudes towards Canadian Studies.
