An essential characteristic of firm size distribution patterns in developing countries including India, is a bimodal distribution with a "missing middle", which is widely accepted in development economics. We analyse data from the Annual Survey of Industries (ASI), National Sample Survey (NSS) and Economic Census to assess the firm size structure of the whole non-farm sector. The contribution of the paper is that for the first time a comprehensive database is constructed to enable analysis of the size structure of India's non-farm enterprises. The second contribution is that we find a deep distortion in India, with even a "small"-scale sector being very small, relatively. We examine briefly the policy-related causes that make India an outlier even among Asian economies in respect of size structure of enterprises. Finally, we argue that the historically policy-induced informality of enterprises is being entrenched by the current hiatus in state policy in even recognising the true nature of the problem of micro, small & medium enterprises (MSMEs), which holds back both their growth and employment. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship between leadership and business model innovation (BMI) in an entrepreneurial firm. From the literature, it was found that the role of a leader in BMI was unexplored. A research framework was created which was the replication of the model created showing the relationship between leadership and innovation. Design/methodology/approach: The qualitative single in-depth case study was used to understand the effects of leadership in BMI. The case of an entrepreneurial firm in the graphic and animation education sector from India was chosen to test the research framework. The leader of Xplora Design Skools was observed closely, and he was interviewed multiple times. Findings: From the analysis, it was clear that, in this organization, the leader was a trigger for BMI through creating and influencing creativity and innovation in the organization. This case also shows that he was making tangible contribution to the work being done and motivating his employees. These initiatives show his influence on the process or execution of BMI. For several decades the leading wind energy nations were European, while China and India were mainly the recipients of technology transfer. This paper aims to explore the role technology transfer/cooperation from Europe played in shaping firm-level wind energy technologies in China and India and to discuss whether the recent technology cooperation between the Chinese, Indian, and European wind firms challenges the classical North–South technology cooperation paradigm. The research finds that firm-level technology transfer/cooperation shaped the leading wind energy technologies in China and to a lesser extent in India. The paper also finds that several trends towards South–North technology cooperation have been observed between China, India and Europe, such as South–North flows of capital, drivers for market access, and R&D leadership, while the origins of innovation (e.g. patents) seem to remain predominantly in the global North. This paper explores the influence of home country academic culture on the performance of international students in their studies. The focus was on Indian international students studying business courses in an Australian regional university because 61% of its students are international and majority of them come from India. The paper describes a pilot study employing a narrative inquiry approach to provide a better understanding of international students' academic culture. Three main academic cultural gaps were identified from the students' narratives: (1) annual teaching versus semester teaching scheme; (2) lack of familiarity with writing assignments; and (3) lack of familiarity with the Australian accent. Businesses have voluntarily adopted environmental strategies to go beyond compliance. This can be attributed to: a) business community's realisation that environmental investments have the potential to improve business performance and b) pressure from multiple stakeholder groups. In order to improve business relations with the stakeholders, business needs to identify these stakeholder groups and also understand their environmental concerns across the entire life cycle of the product. The first part of this paper deals with relevant theory and introduces a framework to analyse significant environmental stakeholder groups and their influence across its entire life cycle on corporate behaviour. The second part of the paper presents a system approach to improve stakeholders' satisfaction and further develops a model based on Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to measure stakeholders' satisfaction. Interlocking directorates play a crucial role in the corporate governance system. In this paper we analyse the structural characteristics of the network of the interlocking directorate of National Stock Exchange (NSE) listed Indian companies using the tools of social network analysis to examine the effects of the underlying network on the performance of companies and directors. A component analysis of the network shows that 78.5% of the companies fall under one giant component with the largest island containing 6 companies. The giant component was further analysed for clusters and centrality measures. The results show that the highly boarded directors who constitute just 2.25% of the director population are associated with 42% of the total listed companies which account for 65.5% of the total market capitalisation. The top central actors in both director as well as company networks have been identified. The calculated values of mean path length and global clustering coefficient provide evidence for the existence of small world structure in the Indian corporate field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although the New Maritime Silk Route (MSR) proposal is an innovative idea which aims to create opportunities and bring peace and stability in Asia-Pacific Region, it is designed to improve China's geostrategic position in the world. In order to consolidate its economic and political posture in the region, extricate itself from the Malacca dilemma and secure its Sea Lines of Communication (SLOC) the MSR project is viewed by China as an important strategic tool. For India, the entire proposal has to be seen in the context of its national interest. As India's relation with China has never been hunky-dory, the entry of China in Indian Ocean Region (IOR) will prove detrimental. Despite the China's claim of using Maritime Silk Route as a diplomatic artery between China and its neighbours for strengthening regional connectivity, the unstated and underlying strategic objectives of this project raise questions about Chinese intentions. No doubt that 'Make in India' and 'Start up India' like initiatives launched by present NDA Government will get boost if India joins the MSR project, but at the same time it will have strategic compulsions that India will never wish to compromise with. The fact that China is promoting two corridors (continental and MSR) as part of its evolving regional geostrategy and that 'India lies on both the Maritime Silk Route and the Southern Silk Route' poses both opportunities as well as challenges for India. Under the joint stock company system, ultimate control over management is derived from the effective rate of shareholding. In colonial India, the joint stock company system was widely used from the mid-nineteenth century; however, control was considered to come not from the effective rate of shareholding but from the managing agency contract that guaranteed practical control to a managing agent, typically a business group that had far-reaching influence over business enterprises. Based on archival evidence, this paper clarifies that fundamental control was derived from dominant shareholding. This finding has two implications. First, the significant role of the rate of shareholding implies that managing agents had a keen interest in the value of share capital of the joint stock companies. Second, this significant role also implies that managing agents attempted to hold the dominant portion of shareholdings to keep control over their companies. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The paper identifies and analyses factors that discriminate firms using different types of e-business technologies in the manufacturing sector in India. The study is based on primary data collected from 51 firms located in the National Capital Region. Entrepreneurial characteristics, historical data of firms, and other firms-specific factors such as size of operation, export intensity, international orientation, wage rates, and profit margins were included in the analysis. The findings of the study suggest that the firms managed by informed and qualified entrepreneurs have adopted more advanced e-business tools. The study captures the role of bandwidth in diffusion of e-business. The results show that variables such as size of operation and wage rates differ significantly between portal using firms and others. International orientation of firms represented by variables such as exports intensity and technological collaboration with foreign firms have also emerged as significant factors that distinguished advanced e-business technology using firms from the rest.
