Objective: To identify the 100 most-cited articles in DH and analyze their characteristics. Material and Methods: A search was performed on the Web of Science (WoS) and the 100 most-cited articles were selected. The following data were extracted: citations, year of publication, authorship, institution, country, journal, language, study design, topic of interest, conflict of interest (COI), and sponsorship. The VOSviewer software was used to visualize bibliometric networks. Poisson regression analysis was performed to measure associations between several citations and the characteristics of the studies. Results: The number of citations ranged from 346 to 48. The most-cited article was published in 1997 by Holland in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology. This journal published the most papers, followed by the Journal of Oral Rehabilitation and Journal of Dentistry. Laboratory research, review, and clinical trial were the study designs most prevalent. Reviews (p<0.05; PR= 1.853) and method development studies (p<0.05; PR= 1.853) had a more chance to present more citations. The main topics of interest were the clinical effectiveness of desensitizers and in vitro analysis of dentin morphology. Sponsorship and COI were underreported. England and USA presented the greatest number of citations and connections in the coauthorship network map. Conclusion: Most of the articles were original research, and their topics of interest were mainly the clinical effectiveness of desensitizing agents and dentin morphology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses the prints that were made for the secular feast of Twelfth Night as it was celebrated in Holland and Flanders. The Twelfth Night celebration has two aspects: the secular family party and the religious holiday. The Christian holiday of Epiphany is celebrated on January 6 and is part of the liturgical calendar. While in the Western Church, it focuses on the visit of the Three Kings to Christ. In Holland, it is called 'Driekoningenfeest, and it took place on the same day as Epiphany or on the night before, twelve days after Christmas.

Background: Questionnaires are widely used in survey research, especially in cohort studies. However, participation in questionnaire studies has been declining over the past decades. Because high participation rates are needed to limit the risk of selection bias and produce valid results, it is important to investigate invitation strategies which may improve participation. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of Web-based versus paper-based questionnaires on participation rates in a questionnaire survey on late effects among childhood cancer survivors (CCSs). Methods: A total of 750 CCSs were randomized across 3 study arms. The initial invitation in study arms 1 and 2 consisted of a Web-based questionnaire only, whereas in study arm 3 this invitation was complemented with a paper-based version of the questionnaire. The first postal reminder, sent to the nonresponding CCSs in all 3 study arms, consisted of either a reminder letter only (study arms 1 and 3) or a reminder letter complemented with a paper-based questionnaire (study arm 2). The second postal reminder was restricted to CCSs in study arms 1 and 2, with only those in study arm 1 also receiving a paper-based questionnaire. CCSs in study arm 3 received a second reminder by telephone instead of by mail. In contrast to CCSs in study arm 3, CCSs in study arms 1 and 2 received a third reminder, this time by telephone. Results: Overall, 58.1% (436/750) of the CCSs participated in the survey. Participation rates were equal in all 3 study arms with 57.4% (143/249) in arm 1, 60.6% (152/251) in arm 2, and 56.4% (141/250) in arm 3 (P=.09). Participation rates of CCSs who received an initial invitation for the Web-based questionnaire only and CCSs who received an invitation to complete either a paper-based or Web-based questionnaire did not differ (P=.55). After the first postal reminder, participation rates of CCSs invited for the Web-based questionnaire only also did not differ compared with CCSs invited for both the Web-based and paper-based questionnaires (P=.48). In general, CCSs preferred the paper-based over the Web-based questionnaire, and those completing the paper-based questionnaire were more often unemployed (P=.004) and lower educated (P<.001). Conclusion: Invitation strategies offering a Web-based questionnaire without a paper-based alternative at first invitation can be used without compromising participation rates of CCS. Offering the choice between paper- and Web-based questionnaires seems to result in the highest accrual participation rate. Future research should look into the quality of the data delivered by both questionnaires filled in by respondents themselves. This paper proposes an iterative Maximum Satisfiability (MaxSAT) approach designed to solve train scheduling optimization problems. The generation of railway timetables is known to be intractable for a single track. We consider hundreds of trains on interconnected multi-track railway networks with complex connections between trains. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm is incremental to reduce the impact of time discretization. The performance of our approach is evaluated with the real-world Swiss Federal Railway (SBB) Crowd Sourcing Challenge benchmark and Periodic Event Scheduling Problems benchmark (PESPLib). The execution time of the proposed approach is shown to be, on average, twice as fast as the best existing solution for the SBB instances. In addition, we achieve a significant improvement over SAT-based solutions for solving the PESPLib instances. We also analyzed real schedule data from Switzerland and the Netherlands to create a disruption generator based on probability distributions. In response to the challenges posed by the fragmentation of habitats and loss of native biodiversity, climate change adaptation and mitigation, diverse agri-environmental measures have been initiated across the European Union (EU) with the aim of fostering agricultural ecosystem service delivery. Previous studies adopting a governance perspective have identified various determinants of successful agri-environmental measures. However, the explanatory value of these studies is limited as the causal processes through which context and scheme design affect implementation success remain grey -boxed. This article uses a mechanism-based approach to uncover the causal processes that underlie actions and interactions within agri-environmental governance arrangements and provides insights into the role the interplay between context and scheme design plays in the successful implementation of agri-environmental measures. The empirical focus is the governance of a successful collective agri-environmental scheme in the Netherlands. In opening the grey box of the causal mechanisms that link contextual and scheme design with their results, the paper applies theory building process tracing methods. Results show that implementation success in the case is explained by the interplay between social learning and trust-building mechanisms. Nowadays, STEM education plays an essential role in the economic growth and competitiveness of nations. This systematic review was aimed to reveal research trends in STEM education over the last 10 years. A total of 336 studies published in the Journal of Science Education and Technology, Research in Science Education, Journal of Science Teacher Education, International Journal of Science Education, Journal of Research in Science Teaching, and Science Education were selected for analysis. The time span was limited to the period between 2011 to late 2020. All sample papers were then examined to capture the latest research trends and status regarding STEM education that included the number of papers by year, research types, countries' rank, and the number of authors. To collect data, the formula proposed by Howard et al. [1] was employed to determine the most productive countries in terms of STEM education scholarships. Findings revealed that STEM education has garnered greater attention and it grew rapidly within this period. The most frequent research type used in STEM education were quantitative studies. In addition, the US, Australia, and the Netherlands were the most productive countries in STEM education research. During these ten years, most papers published in selected journals were written by three authors. The Mobile Laser Scanning (MLS) data inevitably includes dynamic objects because there are always other vehicles (e.g., other cars, motorbikes, bikes, etc.) moving in the area near the MLS data collection vehicle on the road. These dynamic objects need to be removed in advance for many point cloud applications. This paper designs an efficient and memory-friendly data frame aware optimized Octomap-based dynamic object detection and removal method for MLS data. Firstly, the input MLS data is split into multiple data frames based on the timestamp. Each data frame is inserted into a separate Octomap with part of its neighbouring data frames. A statistics-based method is applied to each data frame to find the passable voxel cell space (free space) in Octomap and all points in the free space are extracted as free points. Second, the region of interest (ROI) related to the dynamic object is delineated to retain free points related to dynamic objects. Then the free-point rate and the multi-return rate are calculated to further remove noise and vegetation points from free points. Finally, the fixed radius search is used to extract dynamic objects from the filtered free points. The proposed method is tested in four case sites in Delft, the Netherlands. Results show that 84.98% of dynamic objects are detected and extracted correctly. The proposed method is 18.27% more efficient on average than the original Octomap method, can be further accelerated by parallel computing, and only needs 39.40% of the maximum memory consumption. As in many other parts of Europe, anti-government protest has been a topic of political and academic discussion in the Netherlands for some years. The definition of what anti-government protest entails and which groups and individuals it refers to is not as straightforward as it may seem. Where other institutions have attempted to place anti-governmental protest movements in frameworks of traditional extremist movements, the Dutch authorities describe the anti-government protestors as a group that is characterised by its pluriformity and fluidity. In 2022, they have even changed the term 'anti-governmental' to 'anti-institutional' to more broadly refer to the set of targets that the movement opposes, which includes government, but also the media, the scientific community, experts and the judicial system. In this paper we try to understand the anti-government, or anti-institutional, protest in the Netherlands using a different lens. We use Ernesto Laclau's discourse theory and its concept of empty signifiers to show how opposed interests and goals can be seen as a unified ideology to its proponents. Instead of trying to primarily define the group of people who are anti-government by their actions or characteristics, we look at how those actors define themselves and how they see their struggle against the authorities. We describe the rise and dynamics of anti-government protest in the Netherlands since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on "genealogies" and the eclectic topics of the protest movement. We compare our observations with the definition of anti-governmental protest and the antiinstitutional narrative as used by the authorities. We arrive at the conclusion that analysing the antigovernment protest through the lens of their shared ideas and grievances gives us more insight into the nature and dynamics of this movement than solely looking through the lens of the potential threat to the democratic legal order. Smart containers equipped with ultrasonic sensors at waste and recycle facilities allow waste and recycling companies to build a more efficient and data-driven approach for the collection of municipal solid waste (MSW). In this paper, we propose three time series algorithms that predict the MSW generation of six waste types, using data obtained from smart sensors placed inside 3,640 containers at facilities in six municipalities in the Netherlands. Per neighborhood and per waste type, three models are developed: a Seasonal Näıve Benchmark model, ensemble models of Error, trend, seasonality models with external variables (ETSX), and Quantile Regression models with external variables. According to the RMSE, the ETSX model is the outperforming model for 74% of the time. It is also found that poor weather conditions such as precipitation, wind gusts and thunderstorms result in less waste disposal. The proposed prediction models can be used for more efficient waste collection, in order to collect waste before the fll rate percentage exceeds 100%. Decision support systems are becoming increasingly sophisticated (e.g., being machine learning-based), attempting to automate decisions as much as possible. However, it remains challenging to extract meaningful value from large quantities of data while also maintaining transparency in seeking justification for the choices made. Instead of creating methods for increasing the interpretability of black box models, one way forward is to design models that are inherently interpretable in the first place. Rule-based methods can automate decisions with great transparency and accuracy, helping to ensure compliance with regulations and adherence to organizational guidelines. In this paper, we propose an approach that uses a decision tree machine learning classification technique for extracting business rules from IoT-generated data to predict the asset status of Smart Returnable Transport Items (SRTIs). We report on an industrial case study that uses two years of historical data, obtained from an SRTI provider in the Netherlands, to predict the status of smart pallets. We compare the performance with the results obtained by using a support-vector machine (SVM) technique. Our experiments show that our solution is both accurate and flexible in terms of business rule elicitation. The obtained decision trees are human-interpretable, can easily be combined with other decision-making techniques, and provide a prediction accuracy marginally higher than an SVM technique. This paper seeks to understand the relationship between media and the framing of religious fundamentalism in the digital media space. It investigates the fundamentalism phenomenon through concepts of mass communication and framing theories, and examines several empirical findings of framing of fundamentalism in Canada, France, the Netherlands and India. This inquiry is also an attempt to examine and review the current literature and definitions of religious fundamentalism in the humanities and social sciences. This paper argues that the symbolic constructs and frames in the media of extreme beliefs and their activists are biased and incomplete, and considers the implications for further research in digital media and religious fundamentalism. Plastic pollution has become a global and persistent challenge, posing threats to ecosystems and organisms. In recent years, there has been a rapid increase in scientific research focused on understanding microplastics in the soil‒plant system. This surge is primarily driven by the direct impact of microplastics on agricultural productivity and their association with human activities. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive bibliometric analysis to provide an overview of the current research on microplastics in soil‒plant systems. We systematically analysed 192 articles and observed a significant rise in research interests since 2017. Notably, China has emerged as a leading contributor in terms of published papers, closely followed by Germany and the Netherlands. Through co-authorship network analysis, we identified 634 different institutions that participated in publishing papers in this field, with the Chinese Academy of Sciences having the most collaborations. In the co-occurrence keyword network, we identified four clusters focusing on the diversity of microplastics within the agroecosystem, transportation, and quantification of microplastics in soil, analysis of plastic contamination type and impact, and investigation of microplastic phytotoxicity. Furthermore, we identified ten research priorities, categorized into the effects of microplastics in "soil" and "plant". The research hotspots were found to be the effect of microplastics on soil physicochemical properties and the synergistic phytotoxicity of microplastics with other pollutants. Overall, this bibliometric analysis holds significant value, serving as an important reference point and offering valuable suggestions for future researchers in this rapidly advancing field. The paper presents the case for a decentralized and decoupled architecture for scholarly communication. An introduction to the Event Notifications protocol will be provided as being applied in projects such as the international COAR Notify Initiative and the NDE-Usable program by memory institutions in The Netherlands. This paper provides an implementation of Event Notifications using a Solid server. The processing of notifications can be automated using an orchestration service called Koreografeye. This paper explores the concept of "institutional readiness" (IR) applied to the adoption and mainstreaming of Nature-based solutions (NBS) to deal with climate related risks. We argue that barriers towards up-scaling and mainstreaming of NBS are a manifestation of uncertainty, and are often associated with the 'readiness' of the institutional setting rather than with the readiness of the NBS technology itself. We align the concepts of Institutional Readiness (IR) to the more widely used concept of Technology Readiness Level (TRL) to understand drivers and barriers for adoption of NBS and analyse the role of institutional capacity. We illustrate this with the case study of the Urban Water Buffer Spangen in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, which is an NBS with high TRL. To do so, we constructed a timeline of the design and implementation process of the NBS, identifying and classifying key uncertainties as well as the strategies applied to deal with these uncertainties, particularly in the institutional context. Our results indicate that for mainstreaming of NBS, Institutional Readiness (IR) should be at a degree where strategies to deal with uncertainties in institutional, organizational and governance contexts can be integrated in the design and planning process. Compliance and cybersecurity are crucial to many healthcare organizations. However, their implementation is often challenging, especially when privacy and trust are involved. An example is the case of the Haga Hospital in The Netherlands that was found in breach of the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) for inadequately protecting medical records. Failing to implement security controls prevented the organization from guaranteeing privacy protection and maintaining patient trust. Through the examination of this case and a brief comparison with a similar incident in Portugal, the paper investigated the context and the conditions associated with this breach and why they are closely related to privacy and trust. The results of this analysis suggest that cybersecurity can be considered a "unifying factor" between privacy and trust in the context of regulatory compliance. Thus, this study can be used by regulatory authorities and healthcare organizations to establish more focused cybersecurity measures and ensure a balance between compliance, security, and privacy. The paper provides a critical analysis of the Inclusive Community Project Geldermalsen, in central Netherlands through the lens of Freirean theory and the concepts of dialogue, praxis, and conscientization, thereby establishing an interesting dialogue between critical disability studies and critical pedagogy. On a practical level, the applied participatory methodology of the project and the shaping of new identities on an individual and community level are discussed. On a theoretical level, the research tries to show how critical disability studies can help to refine critical pedagogy through the integration of ability diversity, and in return how Freire's rootedness in materialism allows for the reconsideration of the definition of disability and the agency of people with disabilities. This paper examines the effects of socioeconomic characteristics, trip characteristics and life events on outdoor leisure activities and leisure duration in the Netherlands, based on 14 554 observations from three waves of data from The Netherlands Mobility Panel (in Dutch: MobiliteitsPanel Nederland). A standard mixed logit as well as a 'zero-leisure' scaled model was estimated to cover interpersonal and intrapersonal heterogeneity, The model was estimated for weekends, weekdays, transport mode choice of the activity, and specific leisure activity. The results show that travel time and transport mode choice for leisure trips have significant links with activity duration. Walking and cycling are dominant modes for short-duration activities and public transport for long-duration activities, and activity duration increases with travel time. The probability of short-duration leisure activities is higher on workdays. Certain life events positively affect the duration of leisure activities, whereas accessibility and bicycle ownership have no effect on leisure activity duration. The scaled model shows that the utility of any duration is about 10% larger for respondents who reported at least one day without leisure activities ('zero leisure'). Leisure activities undertaken during the same week are significantly correlated, representing significant intrapersonal variation. The paper highlights the importance of analysing duration of activities for different activity types and days of the week and underlines the strong link of temporal (week, year) and spatial (activity type location) dimensions with transport mode choice. Abstract In 2015, Radboud University (Nijmegen, the Netherlands) started a project to extend its CRIS (Metis) with functionalities that allow researchers to register (metadata) and archive (uploading files) their research data, while at the same time making the data available for reuse in a FAIR way (via national Dutch data archive DANS). The new functionality was integrated with already existing functions in the CRIS, thus offering a one-stop-shop interface to researchers in which registration and archiving of data is combined with registration of publications, the uploading of full text to the university's repository, the linking of datasets and publications and the creation of researcher's profile (CV) pages. Next to the functional extension of the CRIS, the project also included an organizational element: the establishment of support and management structures and workflows, including data curation processes, in order to assure the quality of the data registration process and to foster the FAIRness of the research data. In the period up to now, we continued to transform the university's CRIS, by bringing it in line with the research life cycle perspective and policy changes in Research Data Management (RDM), including a Data Management Plan (DMP) module and FAIR data. In this paper, it will be argued and demonstrated that both for researchers and research institutes, a CRIS oriented approach to RDM brings added value. We also point to future use cases that put a central role for CRIS's even earlier within the research life cycle, e.g. at pre-registration of research questions and informed consent/ethics approval procedures. We further envision our CRIS to play a linking pin function between storage and service locations of data during research and at publication. The paper will use Radboud University as a good practice of past, present and future use of CRIS's in the research life cycle that universities and research institutes as well as researchers and research support desks are currently dealing with in the FAIR data era. BACKGROUND Long-term projections of mobility are key inputs to sub-national population projections. These long-term projections are based on extrapolations of long-term trends. In cases of strong, potentially temporal, fluctuations it is informative to analyse the short- to mediumterm dynamics of mobility, using data of monthly frequency. OBJECTIVE We develop two univariate models to forecast short- to medium-term mobility in the Netherlands. We apply a recent turning point in the time series of mobility to demonstrate how short- to medium-term forecasts can provide early warning signals about possible changes in the annual trend. METHODS The models we apply are Dynamic Linear Models (DLMs) which belong to the state space family of models. The two models developed in the paper incorporate trend, seasonal and autoregressive components but differ in the representation of the long-term trend. Posterior sampling allows for calculation of consistent prediction intervals for both monthly and annual data. CONCLUSION Forecast accuracy is evaluated using time series cross-validation. Point forecast errors and calibration of prediction intervals are compared to those of several other popular univariate forecasting models. This paper presents an agent-based model that explores the conditions for ongoing participation in community gardening projects. We test the effects of Ostrom's well-known Design Principles for collective action and use an extensive database collected in 123 cases in Germany and two case studies in the Netherlands to validate it. The model uses the Institutional Analysis and Development (IAD) framework and integrates decision mechanisms derived from the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA). This allows the analysis of volunteer participation in urban community gardens over time, based on the garden's institutions (Design Principles) and the volunteer's intention to join gardening. This intention is influenced by the volunteer's expectations and past experiences in the garden (TRA). We find that not all Design Principles lead to higher levels of participation but rather, participation depends on specific combinations of the Design Principles. We highlight the need to update the assumption about sanctioning in such systems: sanctioning is not always beneficial, and may be counter-productive in certain contexts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Eutrophication by human activities is increasingly affecting ecosystem functioning and plant community composition. So far, studies mainly focus on the effects of atmospheric nitrogen deposition, surface water eutrophication or soil nutrient accumulation. Groundwater pollution of spring habitats, however, has received much less attention, although numerous papers report groundwater nutrient enrichment worldwide. This study presents a survey on groundwater pollution (with emphasis on nitrate and phosphate) and bryophyte composition in 51 ambient petrifying springs in 5 NW European countries, which were compared to published data from 173 other sites in 11 European countries. The reviewed dataset covers a broad range of unpolluted to heavily polluted springs with nitrate concentrations between 0.7 and 3227 μmol l−1. Most petrifying springs in the rural lowlands of NW Europe were found to have elevated concentrations of nitrate and phosphate with the most polluted springs occurring in The Netherlands. The cover of individual characteristic bryophyte species significantly correlates with groundwater nutrient concentrations indicating that nutrient pollution of spring waters affects bryophyte composition. Palustriella commutata, Eucladium verticillatum and Brachythecium rivulare prefer unpolluted petrifying springs whereas Cratoneuron filicinum and Pellia endiviifolia show a much broader tolerance to groundwater pollution. In order to sustain at least the basic conditions for the typical bryophyte composition of petrifying springs habitats, threshold values of 288 μmol (18 mg l−1) NO 3 − l−1 and 0.42 μmol (0.04 mg l−1) ortho-PO 4 3- l−1 were defined. Data analysis of the spring water composition indicates that the main source for nutrient and nutrient induced base cation enrichment are nitrate losses from intensively used agricultural fields. The anthropogenically induced but regionally different chemical processes in subsoil and aquifers can result in different levels of nutrient pollution in springs. The Dutch planning system has been widely feted as a coordinated, 'plan-led' and evidence-informed system that has been successfully implemented, resulting in sensitive land management, an absence of urban sprawl and the protection of 'green areas'. However, at least since the 1970s, the reality has been somewhat different. This paper reviews Dutch planning history over the past fifty years to highlight in particular the challenge of implementation. In the face of increasing threats from flooding, there are growing calls to strengthen and improve arrangements of flood risk governance (FRG). This endeavour requires an appreciation of the multitude of factors stabilising and driving governance dynamics. So-called catalyst flood events, policy champions and advocacy coalitions have tended to dominate this study to date, whilst the potential role played by Science Policy Interfaces (SPIs) has been somewhat neglected and often approached in a reductionist and fragmented way. This paper addresses this gap by drawing from in-depth policy analysis and stakeholder interviews conducted within England, France and the Netherlands under the auspices of the EU-FP7 STAR-FLOOD project. The analysis reveals four prominent ways in which SPIs shape FRG, by i) facilitating the diversification of Flood Risk Management (FRM) strategies; ii) increasing their connectivity, iii) facilitating a decentralisation of FRM and iv) fostering inter-country learning. It identifies different roles of specific interfaces (structures) and interfacing mechanisms (processes) in shaping governance dynamics. This way, the analysis reveals various 'entry points' through which SPIs can steer FRG, either along existing pathways, or towards new and potentially transformative change. With 35,000 km of bicycle pathways, cycling is common among persons of all ages less than 65 years in the Netherlands. Bicycle is often seen as a standalone travel mode but when integrated as part of a multimodal trip with train, it can be an important solution for long distance journeys, offering more flexibility and faster access time than other travel modes to a railway station. In this paper we investigate which factors influence departure train station choice on combined bicycle-train trips in the western region of the Netherlands. We explore the effects of an individual's socio-economic characteristics, their multi-modal trip attributes, as well as neighborhood characteristics and station attributes. Observations from the Dutch National Travel Survey over the years 2015-2017 are considered for analysis where bicycle is used as either an access or egress mode. A multinomial logit model is estimated in which the choice set of an individual is determined by the stations in the proximity. Results show that stations as far as the fourth closest station are considered as a relevant option for an individual. Inclusive conservation is promoted as a means to integrate stakeholders in nature, conservation. Despite several studies recognizing that inclusive conservation of protected areas may be challenging and requires explicitly addressing potential tensions between stakeholders, little research has unpacked how these tensions manifest in specific contexts. This paper aims to explore possible approaches for navigating tensions to improve the facilitation of an inclusive conservation approach in the Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park in the Netherlands. We conducted 18 semistructured interviews with stakeholders such as public and private landowners and, municipal and provincial governments in the national park. Results reveal a longer history of collaboration which still fails to address the root of the tensions. The experiences show that compromising or consensus building amongst stakeholders alone is not sufficient for achieving inclusive conservation. Guidance and clear goals set by policy, as well as sufficient investments in capacity and trust building are recommended to avoid inaction. Furthermore, we found that tensions are inextricably linked to different dimensions of power, such as discursive and structural power. While considering power in inclusive conservation can provide a realistic perspective we also, acknowledge that equalizing power is not the silver bullet underpinning this conservation approach. • We investigate an inclusive conservation approach "on the ground" in a Dutch case study. • Tensions lie in unclarities in governance and collaborative platforms. • Power imbalances contributed to deepening tensions. • Enhancing capacities, leadership, and trust could benefit inclusive conservation approaches. This paper investigates how the notion of ‘sustainability’ is strategically framed in the context of Dutch infrastructure governance in the Netherlands. By conducting a frame analysis (based on policy documents, websites and semi-structured interviews), the paper discerns six sustainability frames. These frames concern substantive (e.g., more focus on ecology), process (activating new networks) and organizational (e.g., new practices of work) aspects. The paper also illustrates how these sustainability frames relate to the changing institutional context of infrastructure policy and governance more broadly. • Participatory capacity building has potential for bilateral knowledge sharing. • Citizens and authorities share knowledge more easily in informal and equal context. • Using existing capacity for building (other) capacity may form a double-edged sword. • The role researchers play in participation requires careful consideration. Social capacity building is increasingly suggested as strategy for supporting vulnerable communities in dealing with natural hazards such as floods. However, research on the empirical implementation of social capacity building is still limited. This paper presents a conceptualisation and an empirical case study of participatory social capacity building for flood risk mitigation in the Netherlands. We designed and implemented two distinct participatory pilots, studied the processes and outcomes to assess what factors influence social capacity building, and assessed how existing capacity may be leveraged. Social capacity is herein conceptualised as consisting of five dimensions: Knowledge, Motivation, Networks, Finance, and Participation. The first pilot included a walk in flood-prone areas and a discussion session with citizens and flood risk authority representatives. The second pilot involved elementary school pupils interviewing senior citizens with flood experience. Based on qualitative observation and analysis of the processes, findings suggest there is good potential for mutual sharing of knowledge if all participating actors are equal in the participatory process, and that informal settings open up debates, but also that leveraging existing social capacities might inadvertently impede the dissemination of knowledge that is vital in coping with (future) disaster risks. Emerging technologies like Internet of Things, Data Science, Deep Learning, Augmented Reality, Edge Computing, and Digital Twins are bringing new opportunities, challenges, and solutions for many domains including agriculture, plant sciences, animal sciences, food sciences, and social sciences. These disruptive technologies are at the center of the fourth industrial revolution, but are we ready yet to educate and prepare new generations to help society, science, and humanity adapt them? How can we change the current curriculum to reflect these technological innovations? How can we help the new generation to develop not only left-brain skills but also right-brain skills? The Netherlands is the second largest food exporter in the world after the United States and the agricultural related exports generated €45 Billion in 2018 for the economy. R&D in Dutch companies and innovation in universities in the Netherlands play an important and active role in this context. In this paper, we provide a general framework for supporting education in the context of Industry 4.0. We adopt the case study of Wageningen University at which we were actively involved in designing and customizing academic courses related to Industry 4.0. Wageningen University, which has the highest rank in the field of Agriculture & Forestry according to influential university rankings and has a rank 59 according to Times Higher Education, is traditionally a life science university but has taken also an active strategy for aligning with the developments in IT and Artificial Intelligence. Apart from the content-wise shift, skills such as critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving are addressed by applying project-based evaluations. Neighbourhood watch messaging groups are part of an already pervasive phenomenon in The Netherlands, despite having only recently emerged. In many neighbourhoods, street signs have been installed to make passers-by aware of active neighbourhood surveillance. In messaging groups (using WhatsApp or similar communication apps), neighbours exchange warnings, concerns, and information about incidents, emergencies, and (allegedly) suspicious situations. These exchanges often lead to neighbours actively protecting and monitoring their streets, sending messages about suspicious activities, and using camera-phones to record events. While citizen-initiated participatory policing practices in the neighbourhood can increase (experiences of) safety and social cohesion, they often default to lateral surveillance, ethnic profiling, risky vigilantism, and distrust towards neighbours and strangers. Whereas the use of messaging apps is central, WhatsApp neighbourhood crime prevention (WNCP) groups are heterogeneous: they vary from independent self-organised policing networks to neighbours working with and alongside community police. As suggested by one of our interviewees, this can lead to citizens “actually doing police work,” which complicates relationships between police and citizens. This paper draws on interviews and focus groups in order to examine participatory policing practices and the responsibilisation of citizens for their neighbourhood safety and security. This exploration of actual practices shows that these often diverge from the intended process and that the blurring of boundaries between police and citizens complicates issues of accountability and normalises suspicion and the responsibilisation of citizens. This paper evaluates the effects of the employment programme on young unemployed people in the Netherlands. The effectiveness of the programme is measured by probability of both re-employment and participation within the regular educational system. This evaluation is made in comparison to that of an individual who would continue seeking employment as an openly unemployed person. The effects of the programme are evaluated a year/two years following the start of the programme. We apply a propensity score matching method. The identification of an average treatment effect is based on the conditional independence assumption. The effects on re-employment probability and the probability of participation in the regular educational system are statistically negative, applicable to both long- and short-term scenarios. This paper presents a flexible agent-based simulation (ABS) model to serve as a matchmaking system for trucks such that they can form a platoon. A platoon is a formation of trucks which drive closely behind each other in a (semi)autonomous fashion. We focus on an agent-based system which seeks platoon candidates in the proximity of a truck and tries to find a match based on several properties of the trucks. The ABS does so in a dynamic fashion based on real-time (geo)data. Opposed to centralized systems, the matchmaking is done locally among trucks(agents). Due to the spontaneous nature of this matching type, we denote this type of platoon matching as real-time matching. We illustrate the ABS using a case study at a truck stop near the Port of Rotterdam, The Netherlands. In the field of disinformation research, the study of antagonistic networks and discourse on the messaging platform Telegram has developed into an active area of investigation. To this end, recent literature has specifically set out to map the scale, scope, and narrative trends marking Telegram communities with ties to localised, European contexts. The present paper contributes to this line of inquiry by offering an empirically-informed exploration of far-right and conspiracist Telegram channels associated with Flanders and the Netherlands. Building on previous observations concerning the propagation of disinformation on social media, the paper proposes a typology of the antagonistic discourse and narratives that circulate within these public channels. It thereby seeks to reconcile the comprehensive perspectives afforded by 'big data' approaches with the analysis of Telegram in an event- and culture-specific context. Covering the period March 2017-July 2021, this paper specifically considers an inductively collected dataset of 215 public Telegram channels and 371,951 messages pertaining to the relevant contexts, and bridges gaps between quantitative and qualitative methods by combining visual network analysis with discourse analysis. This combined approach reveals an expanding, highly diverse and dynamic network of Telegram channels, marked by overlapping antagonistic narratives, including traces of international conspiracy theories such as 'The Great Reset' and QAnon. These observations contribute to our understanding of how an emerging 'alt-tech' platform harbours and interconnects antagonistic actors and narratives in a specific linguistic and political context. • In this paper, a dynamic early warning algorithm is proposed, which can process the flow data of patients in hospital and realize dynamic early warning. • The dynamic early warning model established in this paper reserves a lead time so that medical staff have enough time to intervene patients after discovering the high incidence of post-traumatic hemorrhagic shock. • This paper proposes and verifies the feasibility of using only non-invasive parameters to establish dynamic early warning model. • This article verifies the feasibility of interpretable analysis of patient flow data. Hemorrhage and hemorrhagic shock are common causes of death after an acute trauma. The mortality from hemorrhagic shock can be significantly reduced through the prophylactic administration of red blood cells or the use of 100% mechanical ventilation. In this study, a dynamic early warning system based on non-invasive parameters was developed in this study and was evaluated using deep learning algorithms, aiming to predict the incidence of hemorrhagic shock in patients over the next 4–8 h. An observational cohort study. The data set was collected from three data sets from 210 different hospitals in the United States and the Netherlands. One of them was publicly available for model development and two were used for testing. 9659 patients from eICU database, 2942 patients from MIMICIII database, 1055 patients from AmsterdamUMC database. None. A deep learning model, constructed using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), Bi-directional Long-Short Term Memory (BiLSTM), and Attention Mechanism, was employed to dynamically predict the incidence of hemorrhagic shock in patients over the next 4–8 h based on 4 h patient data. A dynamic early warning model was trained with non-invasive data from the eICU database. The test set, composed of the data of the MIMICIII and AmsterdamUMC databases, was utilized for cross-database validation of model performance, and the AUC value reached 0.8104. When the model parameters were updated with 5% of data, the AUC value increased to 0.8591 in the test set composed of other data. The results from the interpretability analysis showed that gender was crucial for judging whether hemorrhagic shock would occur in patients following trauma. The deep learning model was used to validate the feasibility of constructing a dynamic early warning model for post-traumatic hemorrhagic shock based on non-invasive parameters. The Dutch Child Index is a nationwide information system (IS) designed to alert professionals about each other's involvedness with at-risk children, enabling identification of individual at-risk children, improvement of multidisciplinary collaboration and timely interventions. In this paper, we study the infrastructural work and complexities engaged in making the collaborative system of the Child Index function in real life and in care situations. We use the information infrastructure perspective as an analytical lens and describe the infrastructural work that is performed to make the Child Index become part of actual practices. We also identify flexibility, heterogeneity and the connection to existing platforms as difficulties participants have had while performing infrastructural work. The paper makes two main contributions. First, it provides an in-depth empirical analysis of this specific collaborative and preventive infrastructure. Second, based on this empirical analysis, we argue that when developing and understanding infrastructures, it is important to identify limits to the integrative capacity and disciplining power of ISs as result of conflicting infrastructural work due to incommensurable politics. Our paper investigates the emergence and development of quality assurance (QA) for teaching in the Netherlands since the mid-1980s. We conceptualise our paper on the background of the multi-level study of New Public Management (NPM) as a narrative of political change, as a choice of certain policy instruments and distinct organisational forms, and as a set of practical control technologies. We show how the specific policy regime of corporatist negotiations and Rechtsstaat instruments deflected QA as a 'hard' NPM-policy. QA has nevertheless been instrumental within a wider NPM-inspired policy mix for achieving new ways of governmental control of universities and managerialist control within universities. In many fields of science, 'impact factors' are assigned to articles, authors and magazines as a matter of routine. Databases containing abstracts and citations of scientific publications are available to facilitate this. However, in the Netherlands this is not the case for publications in the field of Law. For several reasons, these publications are not generally 'ranked' according to their importance and/or 'impact' and citations from these publications are not compiled and/or processed systematically. The need to change this situation is generally felt. One reason is that important publications can be more easily found in the ever increasing amount of digital data available to researchers when information relating to their impact is available. Another reason is that universities and research institutes need tools to assess the work of their employees. But the construction of a legal citation index from scratch is no small task. The project described in this paper aims at contributing to a more effective impact measurement of Dutch legal publications - for instance, articles in journals - by facilitating the automatic collection of citation data from publications. This is accomplished by making use of so-called content integration technology. The modern urban population features a high population density and a fast population flow, and COVID-19 has strong transmission ability, long incubation period, and other characteristics. Considering only the time sequence of COVID-19 transmission cannot effectively respond to the current epidemic transmission situation. The distance between cities and population density information also have a significant impact on the transmission of the virus. Currently, cross-domain transmission prediction models do not fully exploit the time–space information and fluctuation trend of data, and cannot reasonably predict the trend of infectious diseases by integrating time–space multi-source information. To solve this problem, this paper proposes the COVID-19 prediction network (STG-Net) based on multivariate spatio-temporal information, which introduces the Spatial Information Mining module (SIM) and the Temporal Information Mining module (TIM) to mine the spatio-temporal information of the data in a deeper level, and uses the slope feature method to further mine the fluctuation trend of the data. Also, we introduce the Gramian Angular Field module (GAF), which converts one-dimensional data into two-dimensional images, further enhancing the network's feature mining capability in the time and feature dimension, ultimately combining spatiotemporal information to predict daily newly confirmed cases. We tested the network on datasets from China, Australia, the United Kingdom, France, and Netherlands. The experimental results show that STG-Net has better prediction performance than existing prediction models, with an average decision coefficient R2 of 98.23% on the datasets from five countries, as well as good long- and short-term prediction ability and overall good robustness. This paper focuses on the lessons drawn by the Dutch railways in their contacts with the Japanese railway sector over the last two decades. The transfers described in this paper do not result from a thorough problem analysis by policy-makers followed by a conscious policy transfer. Rather they result from largely uncoordinated actions that led to a growing consciousness within the Dutch railway sector of the existence of a useful benchmark located in the Japanese railway practices. The paper attempts to provide an answer to a number of questions: how have these contacts appeared, which factors contributed to or impeded their appearance, which lessons were learned, how are these lessons perceived by the railway sector, how much has been implemented, and is there more to come? To do this, the paper starts by providing an overview of the Dutch railway context, highlighting a few elements that were conducive to more openness for new solutions and presenting the main differences between the Dutch and Japanese institutional contexts, before presenting the contacts that took place, some resulting publications and their main findings. Using an explorative survey method, the paper then presents the perceptions of top and senior representatives of the Dutch railway sector who visited Japan, shedding more light on the perception that the sector currently has of the nature of the Japanese lessons and on the extent to which these are likely to be implemented. The paper then draws some general conclusions about this learning process, the change in stance that took place during the last two decades and on the remaining challenges for further learning. Abstract: Scholars stress the need to bring science and policy together for effective policy making. This paper highlights an interesting site of co-production: the second Dutch Delta Committee. Consisting of representatives of science, politics, policy and industry, this state committee advised the Dutch government on adapting to climate change in 2008. Although the committee went beyond common climate projections and advocated non-incremental policy recommendations, its report provoked little opposition. Subsequently, its recommendations shaped institutional reform and policy development in Dutch adaptive governance. Using the concept of boundary organisations, this paper opens up the black box of the advisory process to explain the Delta Committee''s functioning. We conclude that the current understanding of the effectiveness of boundary organisations tends to focus on their internal organisation. The internal processing, shaped by the deliberate composition and organisation of the committee, was indeed important for the production of useful knowledge and management of multiple boundaries. However, this was paralleled by external practices of continued interaction with a range of political, departmental, scientific and public actors in which the Committee positioned the advise. While the former mainly enabled the production of a high quality advice, the latter quested for its acceptation and legitimacy. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Environmental assessment (EA) aims to enhance environmental awareness and to ensure that environmental values are fully considered in decision-making. In the EA arena, different discourses exist on what EA should aim for and how it functions. We hypothesise that these discourses influence its application in practice as well as its effectiveness in terms of achieving the above goals. For instance, actors who consider EA as a hindrance to fast implementation of their projects will probably apply it as a mandatory checklist, whereas actors who believe that EA can help to develop more environmentally sound decisions will use EIA as a tool to design their initiatives. In this paper we explore discourses on EA in The Netherlands and elaborate on their implications for EA effectiveness. Based on an innovative research design comprising an online survey with 443 respondents and 20 supplementary semi-structured interviews we conclude that the dominant discourse is that EA is mainly a legal requirement; EAs are conducted because they have to be conducted, not because actors choose to do so. EA effectiveness however seems reasonably high, as a majority of respondents perceive that it enhances environmental awareness and contributes to environmental protection. However, the ‘legal requirement’ discourse also results in decision-makers seldom going beyond what is prescribed by EA and environmental law. Despite its mandatory character, the predominant attitude towards EA is quite positive. For most respondents, EA is instrumental in providing transparency of decision-making and in minimising the legal risks of not complying with environmental laws. Differences in discourses seldom reflect extreme opposites. The ‘common ground’ regarding EA provides a good basis for working with EA in terms of meeting legal requirements but at the same time does not stimulate creativity in decision-making or optimisation of environmental values. In countries characterised by less consensual political cultures we may expect more extreme discourses on EA, the consequences of which are reflected upon in this paper. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
