CAREER development ,PUBLICATIONS ,MOTIVATION (Psychology) ,SOCIAL impact ,MULTIVARIATE analysis - Abstract
Citation-based metrics are important in determining careers, so it is unsurprising that recent publications advise prospective authors on how to write highly cited papers. While such publications offer excellent advice on structuring and presenting manuscripts, there are significant downsides, including: restrictions in the topics researched, incentives to misconduct and possible detriments to motivation, innovation and collegiality. Guides to writing highly cited papers also assume that all citations are equal, ignoring new directions in bibliometric research identifying 'quality' and perfunctory citations. Rather than pursuing citations, with the uncertainty about their significance and the potential negative consequences, authors may fare better by following evidence from several disciplines indicating that persistence, a focused research program, good methodology and publishing in relevant journals are more important in career development and disciplinary influence than the odd star paper. Research administrators could encourage such steps by considering innovative new multivariate assessments of research productivity, including assessing social impact. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this research the contribution of different factors resulting in the delay of publication of papers from submitting through publication process was studied. Due to the fact that publication delay might happen in different phases in other majors and fields so we have compared and studied this phenomenon in seven sciences and social sciences disciplines. We have examined 11,598 papers which have been published in 102 journals in 2009. The results showed that maximum and minimum time period in three stages belonged to received-revised which lasts eight months and the revised-accepted which lasted one month. Time periods in reviewing papers were different for different subject areas and only few percentages of journals had relatively low publication delay. The findings indicated that 56 % of chemistry papers, 57% of biology papers, 47% of surgery papers, 72% of papers in computer, 89% of economy papers, 96% of management papers and 71% of papers in library and information science have been published in more than six months. Finally and due to the delay efficacy as an efficacious indicator in increasing and decreasing of journals impact factors, can be said that these figures can be an alarm for journals officials in order to decreasing these delays and increasing their journals impact factor. Purpose: This study aimed was done to analyze recent trends in nursing research published in the Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing by focusing on the content of nursing interventions and their level of evidence. Methods: A total of 209 studies published between 2007 and 2008 were reviewed using analysis criteria developed by the researchers. Results: The number of quantitative studies was greater than that of qualitative studies. There was a slight increase in the number of qualitative studies and studies including elderly populations, which reflects the recent population trend in Korea. More randomized controlled trials with a low risk of bias were needed to support more evidence-based nursing practice. Concerning the low rate of ethical consideration, stricter application of research ethics needs to be encouraged. Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest the recent trends in nursing research and the direction of nursing research and review in the Journal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ASSIGNMENT problems (Programming) ,PUBLICATIONS ,SCHOLARS - Abstract
Appropriate reviewer assignment significantly impacts the quality of proposal evaluation, as accurate and fair reviews are contingent on their assignment to relevant reviewers. The crucial task of assigning reviewers to submitted proposals is the starting point of the review process and is also known as the reviewer assignment problem (RAP). Due to the obvious restrictions of manual assignment, journal editors, conference organizers, and grant managers demand automatic reviewer assignment approaches. Many studies have proposed assignment solutions in response to the demand for automated procedures since 1992. The primary objective of this survey paper is to provide scholars and practitioners with a comprehensive overview of available research on the RAP. To achieve this goal, this article presents an in-depth systematic review of 103 publications in the field of reviewer assignment published in the past three decades and available in the Web of Science, Scopus, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, and Semantic Scholar databases. This review paper classified and discussed the RAP approaches into two broad categories and numerous subcategories based on their underlying techniques. Furthermore, potential future research directions for each category are presented. This survey shows that the research on the RAP is becoming more significant and that more effort is required to develop new approaches and a framework. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

On 22 July 2022, the Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos (Unisinos), a private institution and community university in southern Brazil, announced the interruption of 12 of its postgraduate programmes, including the Postgraduate Program of Biology (PPG Biologia), whose professors founded the journal, Neotropical Biology and Conservation. We conducted a bibliometric analysis of papers published by PPG Biologia in the past 20 years to assess its impact on biological research at a national level. The number of publications and citations increased constantly over the years, with publications growing exponentially. Although most collaborations with other research programmes occurred inside Brazil, a significant number of studies were co-authored by researchers from other countries from at least four continents. The main research lines focused on biological sciences, ecology, sociology, education, environmental sciences and genetics. Despite being affected by the decrease in research funding and the reduction of personnel, PPG Biologia kept its high impact score according to the national evaluation, above that of most programmes in private universities and similar to public ones. With a team of renowned researchers working on different and sometimes unique research lines, the interruption of PPG Biologia will harm the progress of biological research and conservation across the Neotropical realm. The major newspapers are still struggling from a three-year ad slump, but the community papers of Queens are enjoying a renaissance, thanks to the borough's population growth and its intense local pride. They're attracting readers by giving them stories that the major papers won't, and luring advertisers with a highly targeted audience. Queens boasts nearly 30 community papers published in English. At least a score of titles are targeted to the borough's burgeoning Asian, Eastern European and Latino neighborhoods. Queens papers are doing well because they offer advertisers, especially small businesses, the chance to reach out to a loyal, well-defined readership.

- Abstract
We have studied the growth of Journal of Clinical Orthopaedics and Trauma (JCOT), the official journal of the Delhi Orthopaedic Association indexed in PubMed, Scopus and Embase, along with an analysis of citation trends and levels of evidence of published articles in the last five years. SCOPUS and PubMed databases (2015–19) were used to extract publication-related data for the last five years. The official website of the journal was also used to retrieve issue-specific data. An audit of recent publications in the JCOT was conducted focusing on number of issues and publications(year wise), types of articles published, review speed, level of evidence of publications, types of publication(speciality wise), number of publications in PubMed and SCOPUS, number of citations(year wise), national and international authorship and the Cite Scores. The submissions were increased by 2.8 times and the citations rocketed to 16.6 times in 2019, compared to 2015. A total of 890 papers were there and the journal was cited 1702 time s in the last five years. More articles with higher levels of evidence papers are now being published. There has been a significant increase in the numbers of submissions, publications, citations, Cite Score, h-index and contribution by the International authors. Its Editorial efficiency has also been outstanding with timely reviews and editorial decisions. The JCOT has become increasingly internationally relevant in the last five years, in the orthopaedic community. However, JCOT needs to publish more papers with a higher level of evidence like Systematic reviews, Meta-analyses, Randomized Controlled Trials and should only publish top-class lower hierarchy papers (like Case reports, Case-controlled and Retrospective studies). - Abstract
Purpose: The aim of the current study was to depict a comprehensive geographical picture of the existing literature on psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES) and to highlight the needs for future works. Methods: We searched the electronic database PubMed on June 8, 2019 for articles that included any of the related key words to analyze all the relevant literature. We applied the advance search; field was adjusted to the title and dates were adjusted to 01/01/2000 until 06/08/2019. We selected the relevant articles. Location of the study was determined according to the affiliation(s) of the authors. Results: 1017 papers were included. Interest in research and publication on PNES has risen over the past two decades. Six hundred and nine full length research original papers and 199 review articles were published on PubMed from 2000 until 2019. Continent-wise, most articles were from North America and Europe (41.1% of the whole publications from Europe and 40.8% from North America; 833 papers totally), followed by Asia (92 papers), Oceania (36 papers) and South America (31 publications), while only 0.9% of the papers (9 papers) were from Africa. Conclusion: A global campaign is necessary to inform and educate the world on the issue of PNES and its significance. While PNES merit further epidemiological investigations, there is a significant disparity with regard to the location of the studies. There is a huge need to invest more on studies on various aspects of PNES in many places in the world, including African nations, India, and China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

Electronic commerce (e-commerce) has become a vital research area in the past few decades. Thousands of papers have been published in e-commerce journals and journals in related fields, such as information systems and marketing, influencing the direction and evolution of e-commerce research. The purpose of this paper is to examine how these journals are perceived by academic researchers in terms of their popularity and their contribution to the field of electronic commerce. An online survey was conducted to compare selected journals across four dimensions: popularity, relevance, academic contribution, and publication preference. The sample is comprised of a total of 162 responses from around the world. The journals are classified as either e-commerce or related fields based on their content, while e-commerce journals are further divided into comprehensive and niche journals based on their popularity. The findings indicate that scholars' perceptions of EC journals vary depending on region, age, and academic rank. Both the overall rankings and the regional rankings of these journals are reported. - Abstract
Joint replacement surgery is becoming increasingly popular globally and recently,in India. The phenomenon of medical tourism has also contributed to increasing number of arthroplasty surgeries being done every year in our country. The surgeons who work in this highly specialized field of orthopedic surgery, have been publishing their research work in reputed journals. In this paper, we have discussed the most cited Indian papers in the field of arthroplasty. It was observed that publications in high impact and reputed journals attract more citations and therefore it is recommended that the ‘good’ scientific research work should preferably be submitted to these journals to create greater impact and awareness about ones’ research. The aim of this paper is to provide a number of reasoned and evidence-supported arguments and a list of recommendations for reducing the impact of academic rejection. A brief literature review examined the prevalence and negative impacts of academic rejection including its purported purposes, predictors, and consequences. Findings revealed that the topic of academic rejection is largely under-studied, with very few empirical investigations. The extant literature typically places the onus on the individual academic to deal with rejection. Few articles have recommended institutional changes to ameliorate the known mental health impacts of rejection. We propose that the discovery and dissemination of knowledge are among the core purposes of academia, and that scholars are far more likely to contribute through institutional and systemic support. Several elements of the current approaches are contraindicated, thus, we recommend several changes, at both the individual and institutional levels to reduce opportunity costs for grants and funding, improve the publication process, and promote academics' mental health and wellbeing. When examining academic rejection through the lens of effective learning, the vast literature of feedback can support important changes to how publications are accepted and rejected. Considering the limited literature pertaining to academic rejection, we present recommendations for changes in how academic performance can be evaluated, for the benefit of both the academy and the mental health of its members. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze articles published in the Journal of the Korean Academy of Nursing (JKAN) between 2010 and 2019, along with those published in three international nursing journals, to improve JKAN's international reputation. Methods: The overall characteristics of JKAN's published papers and keywords, study participants, types of nursing interventions and dependent variables, citations, and cited journals were analyzed. Additionally, the keywords and study designs, publication-related characteristics, journal impact factors (JIF), and Eigenfactor scores of International Journal of Nursing Studies (IJNS), International Nursing Review (INR), Nursing & Health Sciences (NHS), and JKAN were analyzed and compared. Results: Among the four journals, JKAN's score was the lowest in both the journal impact factor and Eigenfactor score. In particular, while the JIF of INR and NHS has been continuously increasing; JKAN's JIF has remained static for almost 10 years. The journals which had cited JKAN and those which JKAN had cited were mainly published in Korean. Conclusion: JKAN still has a low IF and a low ranking among Social Citation Index (E) journals during the past 10 years, as compared to that of four international journals. To enhance JKAN's status as an international journal, it is necessary to consider publishing it in English and to continuously improve the conditions of other publications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective - To closely examine the role of reading in scholarly work, with particular attention to the relationships between reading practices and characteristics of the scholars, the types of publications they read, and the context of reading. Design - Survey. Setting - Universities in Finland. Subjects - 528 academics (research directors/managers, professors, post doctoral researchers, doctoral students, lecturers, and researchers). Methods - An online survey was distributed in Finland, October-December 2016. The first part of the survey asked about scholars' general reading practices; the second part asked about their most recent reading of two particular publications, one a journal article and the other a different publication type. In relation to these two readings, the scholars provided information about the documents read, the reading process and context, how the document was identified and obtained, and the effect of the reading on their work. Main Results - On average, the scholars read 59 publications per month: 20 journal articles, 3 books, 5 conference proceedings or research reports, 17 newspaper articles, 9 magazine articles, 4 blogs, and 2 non-fiction/fiction books. There was no statistically significant difference in the number of journal articles read across disciplines, but the number of books read was highest in the humanities and social sciences and lowest in the sciences and medical sciences. Frequency of reading of particular publication types also varied by work focus (research vs. teaching/administrative) and by the nature of the scholar's research (basic vs. applied). The scholars were also asked about the importance of reading different publication types. Overall, scholarly journals and article compilations were rated as most important for scholarly reading. Differences in these ratings were found across disciplines, work focus, nature of the research, and scholar rank/status. Part 2 of the survey focused on the most recent items read by the scholars. Their reading of journal articles, scholarly books, and conference proceedings/research reports was mainly for the purpose of research and writing. Their reading of newspaper articles, magazine articles, and blogs was mainly for current awareness and continuing education. Their reading of non-fiction/fiction books was mainly for their personal interest or pleasure. None of these publication types was specifically focused on supporting the scholars' teaching. Over 70 percent of the recent readings were new, rather than re-readings. Across all publication types, the scholars read at least parts of the item "with great care". Almost half of the journal articles recently read have been or will be cited in the future; this proportion was also high for scholarly books and conference proceedings/research reports, but not for the other publication types. The most recently read journal articles were brought to the scholar's attention primarily through searching; they became aware of scholarly books and conference proceedings/research reports through both searching and because another person told them about the item. Scholars mainly obtained journal articles and scholarly books from their libraries, but they also obtained articles on the Internet and scholarly books from another person. Forty percent of the scholars read journal articles by printing a downloaded copy, but over half read them on a computer, mobile phone, or e-reader. Over half of the scholarly books were read from published/printed copy, but 18% read the book in an electronic version. Most reading occured in the scholar's office or lab. Over half the journal articles and conference proceedings/research reports read were published within the last year; just under half the scholarly books read were published within the last year. While these scholars worked in Finland, 91% of the journal articles and 73% of the scholarly books they read were published in English. Conclusion - The results from this study confirmed and extended findings from previous studies (e.g., Tenopir et al., 2010, 2015). They demonstrated that scholars read a variety of types of publications for a variety of purposes. However, journal articles still dominated the reading and the perceptions of importance among the various publication types, particularly for the purposes of research and writing. This paper provides a first look at scholars' uses of the other publication types and the influence of work tasks on reading practices; further research is needed to understand these relationships more fully. In general, the disciplinary differences in reading practices found in this study mirror the different publishing practices of the disciplines and so may be affected by future evolution toward open access and social media use for scholarly communication. Each scientific project or publication can be attributed to several fields of study with different degrees. Call interdisciplinary distribution the set of the degrees. If we have fixed number of fields of study, the set can be written in vector form. Each component of the vector corresponds to one of the fields of study. Call the vector the interdisciplinary vector. If we consider a scientist to be a set of his or her publications we can get the vector for a scientist as a weighted sum of a vector of his or her publications. This paper is devoted to an approach to the evaluation of the interdisciplinary distribution of professional or research objects (RO), and the transdisciplinary effects of their changes. RO and professionals can be evaluated on the basis of keywords in relevant scientific papers, reports, surveys, proposals, CVs, and so on. The transdisciplinary effect is apparent when the interdisciplinarity distribution has been changed. We propose formulas to evaluate this transdisciplinary effect. This approach was implemented using participants in group projects at the fourth Young Scientists Conference (YSC) on High-Performance Computing and Computer Simulation. The accuracy of the interdisciplinary vector of several participants was examined by the survey about their involvement in the team projects. This approach can be used to evaluate the compliance of a scientific team with the transdisciplinary research project (problem), as well as to assess the students’ skills in transdisciplinary environments. Introduction. The article presents the results of a study on scientific collaboration between Spanish universities and private enterprise, measured in terms of the co-authorship of papers published in international journals. Method. Bibliometric analysis of papers published in journals listed in Scopus in 2003-2011. Indicators were calculated for output, collaboration, standardised impact and publication in highly reputed journals. Analysis. A number of dimensions were explored: (1) publication patterns among domestic companies; (2) subject matter distribution and impact of the papers published; (3) university-company partnering based on papers co-authored by university and private sector researchers; and (4) regional differences. Results. The three fields where production was most intense were biochemistry, genetics and molecular biology, engineering and medicine. Research in collaboration with companies had a lower normalised impact than research conducted by universities alone. The highest volumes of private sector collaboration with Spanish universities were recorded for pharmaceutical companies. Conclusions. Companies' output was observed to decline across the period studied and their academic articles appeared to be less visible than the papers published by other institutions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The process of writing and the textual form and format that scientific knowledge takes tend to be organized by traditional rules for knowledge production that are reinforced in the publication arena. Too often participatory action researchers must adhere to scholarly writing conventions that may be at odds with the epistemic stance and discursive claims of the feminist researchers who produce them. In this article, we reflect on our experience of writing to transgress conventions for scholarly writing using a previously published paper about and with a lone mother living in poverty. In our examination of this case study we argue that our writing process and the transgressive textual form and format we used were a more authentic reflection of our epistemic stance as critical realists and more consistent with the principles and assumptions underpinning feminist participatory action research--assumptions that privilege power-sharing, voice, subjectivity and reflexivity. We also show how maternal identities and their lived experiences can be constituted differently through transgressive writing practices. We consider some benefits that may accrue to those who are willing and able to challenge disciplinary boundaries for knowledge production and the practical and ethical challenges such a venture may expose. The Information Systems (IS) field has never been more relevant as digital innovations are emerging at a rapid pace fuelled by recombinant innovations based on digital infrastructures, advanced middle-ware layers, and mobile and ubiquitous technologies. This paper argues, based on a bibliometric study of the representation of a mobile ICT discourse within the AIS Senior Scholars’ ‘basket’ of eight IS journals over the past 15 years, that the field needs to become much more academically agile. The study showed that a mere 3.2% of all papers published during this period had any relationship to one of the key technological phenomena in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. The paper formulates the hypothesis that the relative shift in impact between European- and US-based journals within the ‘basket of 8’ could have been influenced by editorial strategising to further encourage academic agility exploring new horizons rather than emphasis on further exploitation of existing ground. The paper, further argues that the IS field seems to more readily engage in a debate of phenomena involving centralised and organisationally-bound technological innovations whereas distributed, decentralised and infrastructural discourses find it much more difficult to gain a foothold. So, whilst the IS field may still be stuck in the mainframe age, it needs to move beyond in order to fully engage with the world we live in. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Background/Objective Telemedicine and teledermatology literature has a limited number of bibliometrics reports. We aimed to analyze telemedicine and teledermatology literature using the Institute for Scientific Information Web of Science database. Methods The statistical analysis of the documents published during 1980–2013 was performed. We also analyzed the correlations between economical productivities, humanity index, and technological advancement levels and performances of the countries in both fields. Results The USA ranked first in the telemedicine field with 3204 publications and 33.8% of the world production followed by the UK and Germany. In the teledermatology field, the USA was the first country again with 206 papers (36%) followed by the UK and Australia (104 and 50 papers, respectively). The most productive countries in telemedicine were Cyprus (30.03), Norway (28.19), and Australia (19.61). Austria ranked first (4.94) in terms of productivity in teledermatology followed by Norway (3.13), New Zealand (2.43), and Australia (2.13). A high correlation was found between number of publications and 2013 gross domestic product values of 60 countries ( r = 0.804, p < 0.001 for telemedicine and r = 0.721, p < 0.001 for teledermatology). A high correlation was detected between the number of telemedicine publications and gross domestic product per hour worked ( r = 0.712, p < 0.001) although moderate correlation was measured in teledermatology field ( r = 0.558, p < 0.05). We found a significant correlation between number of publications and human development index ( r = 0.779, p < 0.001 for telemedicine and r = 0.767, p < 0.001 for teledermatology). Conclusion Most items have been published from high-income, developed countries. Thus the physicians in undeveloped and developing countries, in which telemedicine and teledermatology applications are crucial to deliver medical care and services, should be encouraged to perform novel studies. This paper examines the role of world countries in Library and Information Science (LIS) research for a 50 year period (1963-2012) using scientometrics and Social Network Analysis (SNA) approaches. A total of 58757 papers published in 83 journals indexed in the Web of Science's Information Science and Library Science subject category were covered in this study. The overall structure and evolution of the collaboration network of countries were investigated using macro-level SNA metrics such as density, connectedness, clustering coefficient, mean distance, diameter, components and clusters of the network. Additionally, scientometric indicators such as the number of publications, number of citations and self-citations, citations per paper, number of highly cited papers, percentage of citedness, activity index and relative quality index as well as four micro-level SNA metrics, namely degree, betweenness, closeness and number of immediate vertices were adopted to analyze the function of countries in the network. Findings show that the 58757 papers sampled was contributed by 151 unique countries (vertices) connected together through 11535 links (co-authorships). The collaboration network of countries seems to exhibit "scale-free" and "small world" network properties and the famous notion of "six degrees of separation" is valid in this network. The co-authorship network of countries consists of 15 components, the largest of which contains 137 vertices, yielded a ratio of 90% of the whole network. Clustering analysis shows that this network comprises 39 clusters. Amongst them, the eleventh and ninth clusters which contain US and UK, have the highest density. The function of the top 50 countries in LIS research was also studied using various scientometric and SNA matrices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines the under-researched and undervalued area of American women's prison zines. It discusses three publications created at the California Institute for Women, Frontera, during the 1970s, placing them in the wider contexts of prison reform and the women's movement. Through close analysis, it demonstrates the influences of, and connections to, the feminist print culture at the time and how groups such as the Santa Cruz Women's Prison Project enabled their publication and influenced their ideology. Examining women's prison zines can contribute to conversations about women's liberation by offering new perspectives on what I call 'collective autobiography', and giving voice to an obscured and forgotten community of women. This paper focuses on the lessons drawn by the Dutch railways in their contacts with the Japanese railway sector over the last two decades. The transfers described in this paper do not result from a thorough problem analysis by policy-makers followed by a conscious policy transfer. Rather they result from largely uncoordinated actions that led to a growing consciousness within the Dutch railway sector of the existence of a useful benchmark located in the Japanese railway practices. The paper attempts to provide an answer to a number of questions: how have these contacts appeared, which factors contributed to or impeded their appearance, which lessons were learned, how are these lessons perceived by the railway sector, how much has been implemented, and is there more to come? To do this, the paper starts by providing an overview of the Dutch railway context, highlighting a few elements that were conducive to more openness for new solutions and presenting the main differences between the Dutch and Japanese institutional contexts, before presenting the contacts that took place, some resulting publications and their main findings. Using an explorative survey method, the paper then presents the perceptions of top and senior representatives of the Dutch railway sector who visited Japan, shedding more light on the perception that the sector currently has of the nature of the Japanese lessons and on the extent to which these are likely to be implemented. The paper then draws some general conclusions about this learning process, the change in stance that took place during the last two decades and on the remaining challenges for further learning.
