Discussions around assessment integrity often focus on the exam conditions and the motivations and values of those who cheated in comparison with those who did not. We argue that discourse needs to move away from a binary representation of cheating. Instead, we propose that the conversation may be more productive and more impactful by focusing on those who do not cheat, but who are tempted to do so. We conceptualise this group as being at risk of future cheating behaviour and potentially more receptive of targeted strategies to support their integrity decisions. In this paper we report on a large-scale survey of university students (n = 7,511) who had just completed one or more end of semester online exams. In doing so we explore students' reported temptation to cheat. Analysis surrounding this "at risk" group reveals students who were Tempted (n = 1379) had significant differences from those who Cheated (n = 216) as well as those who were Not tempted (n = 5916). We focus on four research questions exploring whether there are specific online exam conditions, security settings, student attitudes or perceptions which are more strongly associated with the temptation to cheat. The paper offers insights to help institutions to minimise factors that might lead to breaches of assessment integrity, by focusing on the temptation to cheat during assessment. INDUSTRY 4.0 ,DIGITAL technology ,ARCHITECTURAL design ,AESTHETICS ,DISCOURSE - Abstract
Since the beginning of the First Industrial Revolution, technology and its impact on art and design have been a topic of discussion. With the rise of digital technologies, there has been a renewed interest in exploring the relationship between technology and aesthetics. The aim of this paper is to clarify the concept of techno-aesthetics and make it a more accessible field of study by identifying its key discourses. In order to understand how technological objects have been evaluated in architectural history, a systematic review of 177 studies was conducted. The collected literature was analyzed using Kant's characteristics of aesthetic judgment, discourse analysis techniques from Foucault's methodology and Laclau and Mouffe's discourse theory. This helped in creating a framework for classifying the literature. The study analyzed results based on five categories: admired technological objects and architectural objects inspired by them, concepts (function, truth, freedom, objectivity, unity, and power), standpoints (rationalism, romanticism, optimism, and determinism), and benchmarks of legitimation (ideology, history, scientific nature, everyday aesthetics, and sublimation of technology). These results were then combined to identify eleven significant discourses of techno-aesthetics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper studies how pre-service primary school teachers construct and select mathematical definitions through the analysis of their discursive activity. Specifically, the theory of commognition (Sfard, 2008) is employed to determine whether the existence of different meta-rules always leads to the existence of a commognitive conflict. Moreover, we study the reasons that give rise to the commognitive conflicts found and whether they are resolved. To this end, we studied the discourse of 45 pre-service primary school teachers while they answered several questions on defining geometric solids. The data in this study consisted of audio recordings of their discussions and their written answers. In this paper, three vignettes showing different meta-rules are presented. In the first, discussions regarding the characteristics of a definition promoted the appearance of different meta-rules that existed in incommensurable discourses, which meant the existence of a commognitive conflict. This conflict highlights the fact that certain pre-service teachers confuse the processes of describing and defining. Both the second and third vignettes featured the appearance of two different meta-rules. However, in both cases, those meta-rules could coexist in the same discourse, and therefore a commognitive conflict could not be inferred. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

INFRASTRUCTURE funds ,COMPARATIVE studies ,DISCOURSE ,POLICY discourse - Abstract
The paper aims to add to the debate on the varieties of neoliberalism and the homogenizing effects of megaproject-based urban development. It examines the acculturation of the growth imperative as the master discourse that supports the development and implementation of two projects aimed at transforming the centers of Tampere, Finland, and Ł 'od'z, Poland. The selected cities shared similar traits as industrial centers in the past, but their current socioeconomic situation is entirely different. Tampere holds the title of "Finland's most likeable city," while rapidly depopulating Ł 'od'z was labeled the "Polish Detroit." Nevertheless, both municipalities became attracted by the idea of boosting their development through implementing large-scale infrastructural investments to reshape their centers. Inspired by discursive institutionalism, which defines discourse as a set of policy ideas and values, and interactive policy communication and formulation processes, the paper reconstructs and compares the strategic visions of Tampere's "Five Star City Centre" and "The New Centre of Ł 'od'z." It demonstrates how the proponents of the projects discursively forced consent around proposed ideas. Namely, it shows how the issues of complexity, risk, and potential conflict of the two megaprojects have been addressed. On a conceptual level, the paper shows how policy convergence can be discursively facilitated in different socioeconomic, cultural, and political circumstances. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this paper is to examine Levinas's and Derrida's concept of metaphor. The paper compares their account on metaphor that shows well their position toward religion. Both authors agree that metaphor is connected to the realm of "beyond concept" but Levinas identifies the metaphor, in Carnets de Captivité, with monotheistic divinity. Derrida does not. The conclusion is that Derrida cannot be considered negative theologian nor religious thinker. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This paper explores the networks of thoughts behind words by reading architectural texts in the context of linguistics. Using a corpus-based model, our main interest is what the collocational data contribute at an architectural level. The notion of "collocation identification in architecture" was drawn from an analysis of the use of the data for Rem Koolhaas. The data for this study were collected from Rem Koolhaas's articles from 1977 to 2014. An analysis of Koolhaas's ideas about architecture and urban planning was conducted using the AntConc 3.4.4.0 corpus analysis toolkit. The corpus-based model reduced selected articles to words and lexical bundles using the corpus analysis toolkit. This paper explores Koolhaas's thoughts on understanding architecture and the metaphors he uses by analyzing articles using the corpus-based analysis model. The discourse codes in the texts of Koolhaas are examined. A corpus-based model proposal tested on architectural texts has the potential to create new areas of knowledge for architectural discourse. Deciphering the texts and analyzing the codes contribute to the development of new models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Temporality is recognized as critical to the understanding of childhoods by contemporary scholars of childhood. This paper explores the varying temporalities through which marginal childhoods (and their educational inclusion), particularly those situated in contexts of temporary internal migration, are constructed in the Indian context. Drawing on ethnographic data from the city of Bangalore, this paper problematizes how dominant ideals around migration, childhood, and schooling frame migrant children's lives through linear temporalities. Furthermore, the paper argues that policy interventions that ostensibly include migrant childhoods do not engage critically with the politics of linear temporality which, in turn, is central to the exclusionary dynamics of migrant children's schooling. SEXISM in language ,CRITICAL discourse analysis ,SEXISM ,LEGISLATORS ,DISCOURSE ,LEGISLATIVE bodies - Abstract
The paper employs critical discourse analysis for a pragmatically-oriented exploration of sexist statements by a Polish Eurosceptic Member of the European Parliament, Janusz Korwin-Mikke. Extracts from plenary speeches (delivered by the controversial politician between 2014 and 2018, originally in Polish or English) are compared with their interpretations into German and, respectively, either English or Polish. The qualitative analysis reveals a pronounced trend towards mitigation of sexist discourse by interpreters, particularly strong if the original sexism relied exclusively on the linguistic forms selected by the speaker. Impersonalization seems to be the most typical shift mitigating sexist remarks, other frequent shifts include addition of hedges and omission of evidentiality markers. Mitigation is understood here as a discursive shift in the interpreted text which does not necessarily result from the interpreter's conscious decision. It may often occur as a side-effect of interpreting strategies used to overcome comprehension problems or to keep pace with the swift delivery of the original speaker. It is sometimes also attributable to systemic differences between the source and target languages. Sexism present in the source text appears to frequently contribute to serious problems with interpreting accuracy, diminishing the quality of the original argumentation in the interpretations. This paper examines the role of experts in implementing Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) initiatives at the national level and explores the performative politics and power dynamics involved. Original research conducted in Malaysia, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, where REDD+ efforts were underway, provides the empirical basis for the study. The findings reveal tensions between the official win-win narrative of REDD+ and the reflective perspectives of experts based on their empirical knowledge and unique positionalities. These tensions raise questions about the underlying norms and values associated with REDD+. However, the pursuit of professional development within the international development and conservation sector, reliant on donor funding, impedes constructive reflection. The alignment of experts with donor visions for career advancement contributes to this obstacle. Therefore, the paper argues for creating space for a more reflexive approach among scholars and practitioners to foster comprehensive reflection and a fundamental rethink of the future of REDD+. • Examination of REDD+ experts' discourses at the national level reveals another operational challenge for REDD+. • Empirical observations and past experiences of REDD+ experts raise doubts about the core norms and values of REDD+. • The lack of emphasis on this empirical knowledge in international policy processes hinders REDD+'s progress. HUMANISM ,SUBJECTIVITY ,SOCIAL constructionism ,SOCIAL influence ,ESSENTIALISM (Philosophy) - Abstract
The paper will mainly focus on Foucault's discussion on his notion of 'discourse' and his dynamic conceptualization of knowledge, which has such an enormous influence in cultural analysis. He refutes the 'fons et origo' of discourse and calls for treating it as and when it occurs. He says that forms of continuity and unity are just the result of a construction following the rules with its own justification. He suggests that there is no 'human essence' but what a given society understands human beings to be at any given point is a product of the kind of discourses that it produces about itself. This can be seen as an anti-essentialist claim. This notion of man is also not in the line with humanism. It marks a break with humanism inasmuch as it de-centres the individual as the prior agent in creating the social world, rejecting subjectivity as something essential, and prior to discourse, which power acts against. What will be further discussed is his dynamic conceptualization of knowledge and his attention to thresholds of knowledge. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CURRICULUM planning ,DISCOURSE ,ACADEMIC departments - Abstract
The state of knowledge production and circulation - or what is framed as "relevant" knowledge within academic cultures of learning and teaching - is intimately tied to the global concept of what is "marketable". Closely associated with this are opportunities for teaching and research funding, graduate scholarship awards, the employment of research and teaching staff and curriculum design. In Asia, the corporatisation of universities and their departments intensified in the 1990s and early 2000s. This stemmed from a complex interplay of historical and structural conditions and pressures, including the colonial legacy of cultural, intellectual and economic dependency. In this paper, the author argues that what is necessary in these contexts in Asia, in line with the call for what are now broadly termed "alternative discourses" from scholars such as Syed Farid Alatas and Vineeta Sinha, is the teaching of a social science tradition created and expanded by scholars who are guided by the selection of problems and relevance from within. In broad contours, alternative discourses refer to the theorising and conceptualisation of social science in Asia and elsewhere that emerged from dissatisfaction with mainstream Euro-American-oriented models, research agendas and priorities. More specifically, the article interrogates the focus on teaching and pedagogy, which has, among other things, resulted in a displacement of attention from issues that should be of crucial consideration to Asian societies. The International speaker Dr Zakir Naik has been the target of many studies for his influential speeches. Analysing persuasive speeches can be tackled from different angles, amongst which is the functional markers of persuasion represented by the Metadiscourse markers. Dr Zakir Naik's persuasive speeches have never been analyzed from a metadiscourse perspective. This paper aims to investigate the types and functions of metadiscourse markers in Zakir Naik's speeches. After transcribing Zakir Naik's videos manually, the coding process was accomplished via NVivo software and Microsoft Excel. Applying Dafouz-Milne's (2008) categories in the codification process, the interpersonal and textual metadiscourse markers are revealed. In terms of interpersonal metadiscourse markers, commentaries have been chiefly employed, contributing to Naik's relation to the audience. In terms of the textual metadiscourse markers, logical markers showed the highest usage. Such markers help in connecting his various persuasion strategies and multi-argument to make them smoothly connected. This paper has found that, generally, Zakir Naik has effectively developed and promoted his arguments via the extensive use of various metadiscourse tools while establishing an excellent relationship with the audience to attain a continuous relationship. This paper also argues that a fruitful approach to explore the interpersonal and textual definitions of language is Dafouz-Milne's categorization of metadiscourse markers as a powerful methodological tool in discourse analysis. Scientific discourse is devoted, in many occasions, to transmitting knowledge about the risk of proximity to carcinogens; e.g. living near nuclear power station may cause cancer because of the emitted radiation which spreads around. No previous study has attempted to investigate the linguistic manifestation of the spatial perspective of carcinogen risk. The present paper aims at investigating the construction of the spatial invasion of carcinogen risk in scientific discourse to promote people to take preventive measures. To achieve this aim, Cap's (2013) proximization theory of crisis and treat construction is employed. The theory provides three proximization strategies: spatial, temporal and axiological. The spatial proximization strategy, in particular, is adopted in the analysis. The analysis procedure is both qualitative and quantitative. Calculations are performed by corpus linguistics. AntConc software is used for this purpose. The corpus analysis tools used are word list, concordance, file view, cluster/ N- gram, wildcard * and the file view tool. The corpus consists of a set of scientific articles which are combined by the researchers to form the corpus. Results have revealed that scientific discourse employs various linguistic tools to construct the special proximization of carcinogen risk. However, the linguistic tools are employed with different rates to achieve certain cognitive pragmatic aims. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Droughts are intensifying in many mid-latitude river basins due to climate change; therefore understanding the influence of droughts on water policy is crucial. This study of the politics of water reforms in Australia's Murray-Darling Basin (MDB) analyses contrasting discourses of water security during the Millennium Drought (1996-2010). The paper traces the historical evolution, mobilisation and effects of three discourses defined as 'drought-proofing', 'higher value use' and 'river restoration'. These are broadly aligned with engineering, economics and ecological perspectives, and while all discourses were integrated into government responses to the drought, the resurgence of drought-proofing significantly altered policy settings intended to shift MDB water management onto a more sustainable path. The paper illustrates the political and physical conditioning of water policy, placing drought responses in their historical context. The analysis demonstrates how policy actors used discourses of water security to define normative goals and legitimise policies, particularly when climatic extremes provide opportunities to influence policy outcomes. The paper provides three key insights for water governance and climate adaptation: first, drought responses can have far-reaching effects for water governance and policy trajectories; second, droughts pose challenges to positive climate adaptation when they revitalise heroic droughtproofing initiatives; and third, understanding the historical roots of contemporary drought responses is vital for effective climate adaptation. ACCOUNTING ,DISCOURSE - Abstract
Purpose: This paper presents two key propositions - firstly that critical accounting is a movement not a theory; secondly that buried within the literature is what can be described as a manifesto. Design/methodology/approach: This paper is a discourse that in its very nature epitomises the concept of critical accounting research. Although in this paper there is no reliance on any theory or methodological approach that would clearly distinguish the nature of the paper. Findings: There are no empirical findings merely the discussion and reflection. Implications: The contention that the critical accounting research movement is not dead but has certainly not achieved any monumental change in accounting or society is a matter for future researchers to consider. Originality/value: The value of the paper lies in its attempt to hold up a reflection of what has happened and what has been overlooked. The paper also has identified the otherwise overlooked manifesto of the critical accounting research movement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This paper investigates participants' reflections on power relations embedded in the cultural-pragmatics of unsourced evidentials in Persian texts. Using Fairclough's (2013) critical discourse analysis, we adopted Hanks' (2018) ethnography of referential practices and Foucault's (1980) power dynamics to analyse 16 Persian texts through follow up interviews and focus group discussions on two opposing pairs of texts – one pair on Iranian national identity versus Persian literature, and another on Iranian politics versus religion. Our analysis revealed that unsourced evidentials appear in Persian predominantly due to censorship and sometimes due to deliberate use by authors (e.g., for winning an argument). Text consumers often overlook unsourced evidentials while reflecting on politico-religious referents, such as inequalities and bigotry. This has roots in Persian literature, religion, and politics of power embedded in the culture, and the participants' attention to inequalities and discriminations has roots in referential practices in current Iranian discourse. In medieval Castile, language and propaganda were key aspects of political disputes. Some chroniclers and poets contributed to legitimisation and delegitimisation processes by representing both sides in their works. This paper presents a comparative view of the discursive strategies used to discredit the nobles who questioned whether Henry IV of Castile and, later, his successor, Isabella I, were rightful monarchs. The tactics of two chroniclers in particular will be examined, both of whom were solid defenders of the royal authority: Diego Enríquez del Castillo and Fernando de Pulgar. Their texts, as with other coetaneous chronicles, have never been compared in depth from the perspective suggested above; as such, an analysis could offer some interesting conclusions on the matter. The study reported in this paper applies the commognitive theory as a lens to study teacher learning in lesson study to better understand how and why teachers learn from lesson study. Video recordings were made from reflection meetings in three lesson study cycles with a group of four Norwegian lower secondary school teachers, one person from the school administration and a participating observer. The research revealed the potential of commognitive conflicts to explain teachers’ pedagogical discourse. The analyses identified and described patterns in the teachers’ pedagogical discourse when focused on observations of student learning during the reflection meetings. The discourse aligned more with a pedagogical delivery discourse rather than an explorative pedagogical discourse that was the aim of lesson study participation. Three examples illuminate the mismatch in the teachers’ discourse with the canonical pedagogical discourse. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper critically examines Equality and Human Rights Commission's (EHRC) 2019 report into racism in United Kingdom Higher Education. After outlining the context of the report, the paper is situated within discourses of internationalization in higher education (HE)and those of investment, excellence and social mobility. Using transversality, an analytical tool developed by Gilles Deleuze, as a means of critiquing these connections, two groups of findings are presented. First, the report misrepresents the role of racism in HE as an isolated phenomenon rather than as an integral part of the discourse, logic and practices of internationalized HE. Specifically, it masks the discourses of investment, mobility and excellence that underpin it. Second, the report evidences, but fails to identify, the negative consequences of internationalization in higher education discourse. Specifically, discourses of investment, excellence and mobility are linked to the threat of decomplexification, securitization and, ultimately, ethical vacuity in HE. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Natural forest regrowth on abandoned land represents a major land use change in some regions of Europe. This is driven by various factors related to land abandonment, particularly changing socioeconomic conditions for agriculture and rural depopulation. Little research exists about how the issue is addressed at the policy level. This paper looks into the policymaking related to natural forest regrowth in France and Spain, two countries where land abandonment and natural forest regrowth occur at significant scales. We conduct a policy discourse analysis building upon 27 interviews carried out between 2018 and 2020 with policy actors from various fields that connect with these topics. We find four competing storylines in both countries: extensive agriculture, forestry, landscape conservation, and wilderness. These storylines differ regarding the framing of natural forest regrowth as a problem or an opportunity, and the preferred policy solutions. While storylines rooted in extensive agriculture, landscape conservation and forestry tend to problematize the phenomenon, a wilderness storyline voices an opportunity perspective. In France, a few actors voice elements of an insignificance storyline. Given its spatial importance, natural forest regrowth will likely become more important for future policymaking in the EU. Engaging in further research across disciplines and policy fields is necessary to study the phenomenon and its possible management and governance options. • Policy actors narrate natural forest regrowth on abandoned land through storylines. • Interview results distinguish four storylines on natural forest regrowth. • Three storylines tend to highlight the threat of natural forest regrowth. • Natural forest regrowth has not yet received much political attention. • Shifts towards a rewilding perspective may strengthen an opportunity framing. DISCOURSE markers ,DISCOURSE ,SEMANTICS - Abstract
This research paper shows that the deictic temporal marker ʔilʔa:n 'now' has developed a discourse function of organizing the ongoing discourse. This latter use helps the hearer appreciate the underlying structure of the relevant discourse, hence providing pragmatic clues that maximise the hearer-speaker communication. Additionally, based on a corpus of one million words (which is a part of a larger project), this paper shows that the use of the discourse marker ʔilʔa:n 'now' outnumbers its use as a deictic temporal signal in Jordanian Arabic. This is mainly due to the use of other words whose meaning is exclusively temporal, conveying a similar use of temporal ʔilʔa:n 'now'. We interpret this situation as that the lexical use of words is overridden by their grammaticalized/discourse use, especially in the presence of other words that convey a similar lexical meaning of these words. This correlation is best viewed as a direct effect of language economy which curtails redundancies in language use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper provides an analysis of the discursive contradictions and narratives of labour within Hyr, a location-based freelance platform app that caters to the retail, hospitality, and restaurant sectors in Toronto and New York. The app provides companies with access to individuals with a variety of skills in these sectors and provides workers with access to contract jobs. The paper provides an analysis of Hyr's promotional marketing, that targets urban "millennials," and discusses how the platform exerts algorithmic and information control over its workers through their legal documentation and conditions of work within the platform. Situated within the "gig economy," the paper also reviews current local policy proposals to alleviate the situation of gig workers in the Canadian context. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MODERNIZATION theory ,HERMENEUTICS ,SOCIAL order ,SOCIAL reproduction ,DISCOURSE - Abstract
Rationality is the key concept for understanding the reproduction of social life in the era of reflexive modernization. A fusion of lessons learned from the constructivist view of the world and analysis of the hermeneutic category of pre-understanding has become the basis of my belief that rationality is nowadays the basic modal concept, and the forms of its existence shape the order of social life. In my research practice, rationality has become a link between my interest in work and the theory of social order development. In this paper, I briefly present the relations between the notion of rationality and the theory of reflexive modernization. Then, I present my research path and the tools used in the analyses. The most important part is devoted to the effects of the conducted research. I classify and describe the types of rationality present in discourses on work in Poland. The discourses of politicians, experts, and the so-called “ordinary people” were analyzed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper comprehensively analyzes the historiography of the formation and development of the relations between Ukraine and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) during 1991--2020. The authors of the article explored a set of texts devoted to the subject of Ukraine -- NATO relations and provided their historiographic analysis. The aim of the article is to identify the main trends and tendencies in the interpretation of the achievements of Ukraine-NATO cooperation. Also, this article elucidates the main aspects of the evolution of the historical discourse of Ukraine--NATO relations, characterizes their content and tendencies of progressive development, and pays special attention to the conceptual analysis of the contribution of individual scientists and institutions to the development of knowledge about Ukraine -- NATO relations. The authors offer the original approach to the periodization of the development of the historiographical process and as well as provide a detailed description of each stage. The authors rely on the scientific principles of historicism and objectivity, general scientific (analysis, synthesis, deduction, and induction) and special-historical (historical-chronological, historical-comparative, retrospective, systematic structural, historical-typological, etc.) methods. The contribution of researchers to the study of the historical preconditions for the formation of the contact between Ukraine and NATO in their political, military- technical, economic, and humanitarian aspects, as well as normative-legal and organizational-institutional principles of the cooperation, are identified and comprehensively analyzed. The authors identified the areas that require further scientific research and pointed out the prospects for further investigation on various aspects of Ukraine -- NATO relations in order to ensure the integration of our country into the North Atlantic Alliance. This paper engages with China's currently most prominent environmental policy concept: ecological civilisation. As this concept is becoming a cornerstone of China's strategy of socialist modernisation, we examine whether and how the term can enable ecological protection in China and beyond. We argue that ecological civilisation, while a recently emerged discourse, builds on established environmental governance practices in China that shape its manifestation in political action. To illustrate this argument, we explain how two philosophical principles central to ecological civilisation discourse, "holism" and "harmony", have been expressed in environmental political practice in Communist China. Building on this analysis, we suggest that ecological civilisation discourse may have a profound impact in certain policy domains (e.g., resource conservation and ecologi cal conservation redlines), but limited transformative capacity in others (e.g., environmental litigation and resource extraction).
