She was careful to wash her hands frequently, even though she almost always wore gowns and gloves with all patients. Every time she left or entered a room, she lathered her hands in hand-sanitizer gel. Just 27 years old, she was young and healthy. On paper, she was at low risk for infection. Hans Berger published the first human electroencephalograph (EEG) recording in 1924 [1]. He used a device called the string galvanometer to record brain waves on a light-sensitive plate. The fluctuating potential difference from the scalp oscillated at eight to 13 cycles per second (alpha rhythm) when an individual closed his or her eyes and remained relaxed but awake. Berger noted that when a person fell asleep, the alpha rhythm disappeared. Amazingly, to this day, the alpha rhythm disappearance remains the primary marker for defining sleep onset. Years later, Carl Ludwig invented a kymograph (the ?wave writer?) that used a stylus to record electroencephalographic oscillation on a rotating drum. Later, an alternative approach evolved so that the brain wave recordings were inked onto a roll or fan-folded continuous paper strip moving at a constant speed. Mechanical engineers gradually improved the drive mechanisms for moving paper by using rotating sprockets, pinch rollers, and pressure plates. Many years ago, while spending a short academic period at Pontificia Universidad Cat?lica del Per?, Lima, Max E. Valentinuzzi had a discussion with Antonio Olivera, a professor of electromagnetic theory in the Department of Engineering, who usually taught undergraduate electrical engineering courses. I decided it was time to register for the 2010 IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Conference (EMBC'10) in Buenos Aires at the last minute...one day before the deadline. After all, the deadline for registration, if one was submitting a paper, was the next day. I call it just-in time-registration, whereas my wife calls it procrastination. Whatever it was called, I was clearly waiting until the last moment. My graduate student, who actually wrote the paper, was getting anxious, and I knew that it was time to knuckle down and go to the EMBC Web site and register, which I did.
