Wood has always been an indispensable material in human society throughout history. Its efficient utilization is even more crucial today in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, its production, trade, use, and recycling are seldom systematically assessed, with Germany being an exception due to the extensive work conducted by the University of Hamburg and the Thünen Institute over the years. To provide a more precise account of wood use, this study employs oven-dry metric tonne as the reference unit to construct a static wood flow based on the material flow analysis and wood resource balance in Germany in 2020. The Sankey diagrams comprehensively visualize the flow and stock of wood in various sectors, including forests, sawmills, pulp mills, buildings, energy, and waste. Results showed that forest felling volume exceeded growth due to significant wood demand and export, while forest carbon sinks increased because more hardwood was retained in German forests. The building and construction sector was the largest consumer of primary wood products, accounting for 52.1 % of the total, followed by furniture (29.5 %) and packaging (14.0 %). All waste paper was used to produce recycled fiber pulp, whereas only 14 % of waste wood was employed in particle board production. The woody biomass energy, amounting to 142.4 TWh, provided approximately 4.4 % of Germany's primary energy consumption, with around half of it used in private households. In addition to apparent data, this study also uses resource allocation, carbon storage, and cascade potential as examples to demonstrate that wood flow is applicable for further in-depth analysis, supporting wood efficient utilization. It can even be applied to any country and period with sufficient data and conversion factors, but here, they also prevented this study from comprehensively describing past and future wood flows. Including disabled workers in value-creating work processes is a fundamental and guaranteed human right and is, therefore, an essential goal of society. In Germany, sheltered workshops create the conditions for this inclusion since they are essential to companies' value chains. A central challenge is the inclusion of disabled workers in the value-creation processes, such as in manufacturing or assembly areas. The skills of disabled workers vary since they have individual impairments. Therefore, this paper presents a digital human model, a Human Digital Twin (HDT), for disabled workers. This paper presents insight into how rural young adults in the rural areas of Oost-Groningen, The Netherlands, and Südharz, Germany, deal with their rural identity with regard to different future horizons. This paper applies future horizons instead of intended future plans to emphasize the open and uncertain nature of young adults' aspired future. Based on 15 biographical interviews and a survey to geographically contextualize these interviews, the results show how rural young adults can have parallel future horizons to maintain several options open in which they all aim to preserve a rural identity. This paper illustrates how rural young adults compromise a rural identity with aspirations elsewhere in a staying or rural horizon elsewhere. In addition, the results show how they deal with rural identities by further internalizing and externalizing their rural identities with variations of embracing aspects of a rural identity with regard to different future horizons. Household residential location changes have become an important life event to study changes in travel behaviour. However, most related studies suffer from the shortcomings of collecting retrospective pre-move data, i.e. recall errors and ex-post rationalisation of change. What is more, the overwhelming majority of research in the field relies on quantitative data that do not adequately reflect the subjective perspective of the households or individuals under study, and that are prone to causality issues. Based on a solid theoretical discussion of causality between the built environment (on two interconnected scales) and travel behaviour, the paper reports on a mixed-methods (qualitative/quantitative) panel survey among movers and a control group of non-movers in Germany. Substantial effort was required to conduct the survey due to the dependence on collaboration partners who provided access to households planning to move in the near future. Therefore the paper focuses on the sampling and recruitment process, for which various channels were used. Results pertaining to representativeness and the costs and effectiveness of recruitment channels are presented, and implications for data analysis are briefly discussed. Transdisciplinary processes deal with transdisciplinary problems that are (i) complex, (ii) societally relevant, (iii) ill-defined, and (iv) real-world problems which often show a high degree of ambiguity resulting in contested perceptions and evaluations among and between scientists and practitioners. Therefore, they are susceptible to multiple trade-offs. Transdisciplinary processes construct socially robust orientations (SoROs) particularly for sustainable transitioning. The integration of science and practice knowledge on equal footing (1) is considered the core of transdisciplinary processes. Yet other forms of knowledge integration contribute essentially to construct SoROs. Individuals may (2) use different modes of thought; (3) refer to various cultures with diverse value and belief systems; and (4) problems are perceived and prioritized based on roles and interests. Coping with transdisciplinary problems, (5) purposeful differentiation and integration and (6) an integration of evolutionary evolving codes of representing knowledge are necessary. Finally, (7) what systems to integrate requires consensus-building among participating scientists and practitioners. This paper is Part I of a two-part publication. It provides a conceptualization of the different types of knowledge integration. This paper aims to elucidate the contested dynamics of sustainability transitions by merging political ecology's emphasis on conflicts, nature, power, and justice with Gramscian hegemony theory. The integrated framework of Gramscian political ecology enables the analysis of transition conflicts as struggles for hegemony on the terrain of society-nature relations amid ecological crises. A brief comparative study of coal transitions in South Africa and Germany serves to illustrate the key insights that Gramscian political ecology offers into the contested nature of sustainability transitions, including conflict dynamics, power strategies, and barriers and potentials for radical transformative change. Tree fall onto railway lines puts passengers at risk and causes large economic losses due to disruption of train services and damage to infrastructure. Railway lines in Germany are vulnerable to tree fall because of the large number of trackside trees that exist in that country with approximately 70% of all railway lines being tree-lined. In this paper we first tested whether a hybrid-mechanistic tree wind damage model, ForestGALES, could identify the sections of the railway network affected by tree fall in two federal states of Germany, Northrhine-Westphalia (NRW) and Thuringia (TH). We secondly tested whether the model, in combination with meteorological forecast models, could predict where tree fall occurred during a damaging windstorm. We used information on tree characteristics derived from LiDAR and aerial photography along the railway line network in NRW and TH to calculate the critical wind speed (CWS) at which damage is expected to happen for every individual tree as a function of its size and species, and the underlying soil. The railway network was then divided into 500 m sections and the statistics of the CWS , tree height, and species composition (broadleaf/conifer mix) within each section were calculated. Analysis of past tree fall events recorded by Deutsche Bahn AG (DB) showed that there was a significantly lower minimum CWS and significantly greater maximum tree height in sections that had recorded damage. In a second step we compared the calculated CWS values for all trees against downscaled wind speed assessments across the two federal states during Storm Friederike (named Storm David internationally) on 18 January 2018 and tested the ability of the model to discriminate sections with recorded damage during the storm. Excellent model discrimination was found with an AUC value of 0.82 and an overall model accuracy of 74.2%. The first test showed that the ForestGALES model with precise individual tree information can identify the sections of a railway network most vulnerable to tree fall. The second analysis showed, for the one storm tested, that the ForestGALES model when combined with predicted storm wind speeds can identify the most probable sections of the railway network to experience tree fall during an approaching damaging storm. Such information could be of value in firstly planning remedial work along railway lines, and secondly preparing the railway network ahead of a major storm. • Tree fall is a major hazard to the railway network in Germany. • A mechanistic model could identify sections of a railway most at risk of tree fall. • The model identified sections likely to suffer tree fall prior to a storm. • Sections with tree fall had trees with significantly greater maximum heights. • The model can be used to identify sections requiring remedial action. Transdisciplinary problems are complex, ill-defined, societal real-world problems with high ambiguity that are contested and require multiple trade-offs. Part I of this paper showed that transdisciplinary processes include seven types of knowledge integration: system (ontological), epistemological, cultural, cognitive, social conflict, evolutionary (levels of representation), and complexity-theory-based types of knowledge integration. The epistemological integration of the different modes of reasoning from science and practice is a unique selling point of the transdisciplinary process. Part II presents five transdisciplinary processes for the responsible use of digital data in different vulnerable/sensitive subsystems of Germany (mobility, health, agriculture, SME, and social media). Between 10 and 18 participants (equally representing science and practice in each group) synchronously constructed socially robust orientations as pillars of a white book. We elaborate that outcomes of a transdisciplinary process can be improved, and barriers diminished by reflecting on which of the seven types of knowledge integration are applied (see Part I). This is done for the six phases of a transdisciplinary process: (1) triggering, (2) initiation, (3) preparation, (4) planning, (5) core, and (6) post-processing. We particularly address researchers and practitioners who seek insights into how the production and integration of knowledge can be improved by transdisciplinary processes. • A large-scaled transdisciplinary project serves to illustrate types of knowledge integration. • We present key questions, tasks, and barriers for six phases of a transdisciplinary process. • The balanced involvement of scientists and practitioners can be measured. • 18 lessons to be learned can serve as user manual for transdisciplinary processes. • Reflecting on knowledge integration helps to improve transdisciplinary processes. Severe climate change and urgent climate action have raised concerns about wood. Overharvesting and increased wood waste are putting immense pressure on sustainable forest management and the global carbon budget. In Germany, a vital wood supplier and user in Europe, the wood supply chain's production, consumption, trade, and recycling have been insufficiently investigated. To tackle this challenge, we conducted a comprehensive dynamic wood flow analysis from 1991 to 2020. Approximately 2143 million cubic meters of standing timber were felled in German forests over the past three decades, with 80% used for materials and 20% for energy purposes. Wood flow patterns were susceptible to market demand and forest disturbances like drought, storms, and insect infestations. The storm in 2007 left a notable impact, leading to the highest figures ever recorded for various wood products. Notably, the net forest carbon sink, carbon storage in forest products, and energy substitution effect (replacing fossil energy with wood) reached 160, 332, and 343 million tons of carbon, respectively. However, the transition to renewable energy, wooden buildings, and wood and paper packaging demands further strains the wood supply chain. • German agricultural policy is stabilised by a sociotechnical imaginary. • The imaginary is based on Germany's long-standing identity as an industrial country. • Agrarwende vision clashes with established sociotechnical imaginary of agriculture. • Tensions between the two are evident in policy style, expertise, and risk framing. Although much research recognises the importance of visions as key ingredients of transformations to sustainability, it remains unclear how and why some visions become collectively binding. This paper uses the lens of sociotechnical imaginaries, i.e., collectively shared, institutionally stabilised, and publicly performed visions of desirable futures, to analyse the so-called Agrarwende (agricultural transformation), a sustainability-oriented reform of German agriculture based on a vision of transformative change towards organic farming. Methodologically, the investigation draws on published historical and contemporary data sources for an in-depth case study of the Agrarwende using content analysis. It shows how a particular sociotechnical imaginary has shaped German agriculture for many decades and explores how three of its constitutive elements - its policy style, expertise, and risk framing – conflict with the vanguard vision of the Agrarwende. The findings suggest that these elements have reinforced one another in shaping the trajectory of the agricultural system, thus co-producing a strong socio-political order in favour of industrial agriculture at the expense of an alternative set of policies, expertise, and risk framing that supports organic agriculture. Taken together, the findings highlight how knowledge and politics shape debates and controversies about what is deemed a desirable future, what is at stake, and for whom. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
