ViPTM (Visionox intelligent Pixelization) Technology is a novel RGB self‐aligned pixelization approach without Fine Metal Mask for OLED patterning. Since being released in May 2023, numerous breakthrough technical progress has been achieved. In this presentation, the recent results on panel performance and other advantages of ViPTM Technology will be discussed.

With the burgeoning expansion of digital technologies, electronic displays are becoming increasingly prevalent in our daily lives. These displays are not limited to stationary ones like traditional TVs but have also found their way into mobile devices such as smartphones and wristwatches. To facilitate this significant shift, it is evident that substantial engineering efforts are necessary. However, equally crucial is the establishment of proper methods for measurement and evaluation. Without the development of such evaluation methods, technological progress would be hindered.

We present a method of monolithically integrating GaN microLEDs with an IGZO TFT backplane to produce an activematrix microdisplay. After discussion of the fabrication process, individual LEDs, TFTs, and the integrated system are characterized. Results demonstrate a 32x32 pixel, 78.4 PPI microdisplay with luminance exceeding 1500 nits. This type of monolithic microdisplay forges the path forward for future high luminance integrated displays to enable augmented and mixed reality applications.

Hitting the performance, cost and yield targets for microLED displays that can be used in augmented reality headsets poses formidable challenges. Here we discuss some of those issues and report on the progress of MICLEDI 300mm manufacturing platform.

Displays in cars is one of the hottest topics in the automotive industry and highest (image) quality is a must. Therefore, evaluation is excessive and OEM‐specific specs are not efficient. The Displayforum (DFF) innovated optical specifications and requirements by involving experts along the value chain and dedicated methods for automotive.

There are a few inherent problems in the pixel circuits with independent Vth detection. A prominent issue currently is the interference of voltage fluctuation on the data bus on the Vth detection. Based on the analysis of the issue, a countermeasure scheme and the corresponding improved pixel circuit were proposed. The display demonstration and evaluation of the improved pixel circuit suggest that the proposed countermeasure for the issue is effective and the relevant artificial display of band crosstalk could be securely controlled under an acceptable level.

Unsurprisingly, the FPD industry began life making flat display panels. In recent years curved displays have entered production, including TVs and foldable smartphone displays built on polyimide. These are manufactured in a flat state, then uniaxially curved. However, many real‐world surfaces have surfaces with biaxial curvature, either for aesthetic or functional reasons, and require biaxially curved displays with active optics that enable these surfaces to actively modulate, steer and focus light. We report on recent developments which show that flexible OTFT arrays, LC cells and Organic LCDs (OLCDs) can be biaxially thermoformed to spherically curved surfaces.

Wearable eye‐tracking technology is an essential component in AR/VR devices. Conventional Pupil‐Corneal Reflection (PCR) eye‐tracking technology often presents challenges due to high costs and bulky designs, particularly for compact AR and smart glasses. To overcome these limitations, our next‐generation eyetracking technology relies on AI image analysis, significantly reducing the number of required IR LEDs and image sensors. This simplification enhances flexibility and lowers production costs while maintaining accuracy. Our breakthrough solution makes eye tracking more accessible for the masses in AR/VR devices in the new era of spatial computing and the metaverse.

Automakers are adding back mechanical knobs to modern car cabins to address concerns about the difficulty of adjusting vehicle setting controls through the touchscreen interface. Passive capacitive knobs attached to touchscreens are a great solution as they provide a seamless interface while using the same capacitive sensors that sense finger touches. Existing knobs rely on capacitive coupling to a user's hand, making it difficult to support gloved hands. The proposed knob resolves this by employing a unique sensing architecture while providing additional features such as initial state detection and fall‐off detection.

Applied Materials, Inc. has reported a novel and manufacturable microLED display architecture, featuring UV‐A microLEDs, 4‐subpixel layout, pixel isolation wells filled with inkjetted Cd‐free R/G/B quantum dots (QDs), and a blanket UV blocker on top. A 1.37” smart‐watch active‐matrix display prototype was assembled using such method. Our QDs, including blue QD and the matrix materials exhibit excellent stability under UV excitation, as verified by accelerated lifetime test under higher UV flux and elevated temperature. The emission properties of our R/G/B QDs was further optimized, paving a path to achieve 99% DCI‐P3 color space coverage. Our display demonstrates a highly uniform Lambertian emission pattern with minimal color shift at high viewing angles, attributing to all emissions originating from QD embedded in the same polymer matrix. Furthermore, we can eliminate the QD photon‐brightening effect and demonstrate display with high thermal stability up to 90⁰C.

We analyze the field‐of‐view (FoV) limitations in a single‐layer, full‐color waveguide‐based augmented reality display, revealing key influences from the waveguide's refractive index, exit pupil expansion (EPE) scheme, and combiner's angular response. Based on these analyses, we propose an optimized butterfly EPE scheme with gradient‐pitch polarization volume gratings (PVGs), achieving a theoretical diagonal FoV of 54.06° with a 16:10 aspect ratio.

We are introducing an innovative organic semiconductor electroluminescent device capable of emitting light with unprecedented characteristics: high directionality (divergence angle of 1.1°) and high color purity (full width at half‐maximum of 2.5 nm). This achievement was realized through intricate design techniques aimed at enhancing gain via meticulous recombination zone control, complemented by the reduction of losses through minimizing the overlap of the optical mode with the electrodes. These groundbreaking results mark the world's first demonstration of simultaneously achieving a narrow spectrum and superior directionality in an organic electroluminescent device.

Stretchable displays are garnering attention due to their ability to undergo reversible shape deformation. However, due to Poisson's ratio, image distortion issues caused by undesired substrate deformations during stretching remain challenging. Here, we propose meta‐elastomers with biaxially zero Poisson's ratio for distortion‐free stretchable displays. To program the Poisson's ratio according to biaxial stretching, elastomeric mechanical metamaterial (MM) frames with a negative Poisson's ratio are integrated into an elastomer matrix. By leveraging competitive interactions between the elastomeric MM frame and elastomer matrix deformation, we have successfully implemented the biaxial near‐zero Poisson's ratio substrates.

By reducing the ratio of dark lines to the extreme, and improving the transmittance at the dark line with chiral liquid crystal, we have successfully developed novel chiral VA Mode, which is the world's first. The transmittance of 4K can be increased by 14%, and 8K can be increased by more.

In this study, we introduce the world's first development of a full‐color micro‐LED display utilizing a Simultaneous Transfer and Bonding (SITRAB) process and a novel SITRAB film. Developed micro‐LED display involves R/G/B micro‐LED chips measuring 35 × 20 µm 2, arranged into a display resolution of 32 × 32, with a pixel pitch of 324 µm and a subpixel pitch of 50 µm. The micro‐LED display utilizes a glass substrate and aluminum wiring. A key innovation in our process is the use of indium solder for low‐temperature bonding, significantly enhancing the assembly process's efficiency and reliability. The SITRAB film, a specially developed material by ourselves, removes the surface oxide of indium solders, facilitating effective bonding between the micro‐LEDs and the display electrodes. Post‐curing of this SITRAB film further enhances the shear strength of the micro‐LEDs. An average shear strength of approximately 5.45 gf (about 32 MPa), significantly surpassing the tensile strength of indium. These advancements not only demonstrate the feasibility of the SITRAB process and the new film material in creating high‐quality micro‐LED displays but also significantly boost the reliability of these displays.

Color Sequential Front‐lit LCOS (CSFLLCOS) is a compact (<0.5cc) and high brightness (110000nits/300mW) imaging solution for AR displays. However, as large FOV AR glasses i.e. >40 obecome more and more popular, a higher brightness output requirement is imposed on the imager. A new LED coupling lens and waveguide plate structure have recently been proposed to promote the polarization recycling efficiency (PCE) and TpRs ratio respectively in CSFLLCOS. It is expected that the brightness will be 50% higher.

We are developing a deterministic fluidic assembly process which uses software to sense, sort and assemble micron‐scale devices into desired patterns. This process can be adapted to assemble large numbers of microLEDs (uLEDs) over large areas with high throughput and nearly perfect yield. We present data demonstrating the precision and reliability of the process to illustrate its potential as a scalable process for manufacturing uLED displays.

Vergence‐Accommodation Conflicts (VAC) occur in neareye displays when the binocular disparity of the 3D rendered content (vergence) does not match the display focal distance (accommodation). VAC has been shown to reduce perceptual image quality, cognitive performance, and oculomotor coordination. In this study, we aimed to investigate the impact of VAC on visual performance in augmented reality (AR). Specifically, we quantified the impact of AR VAC on the ‘Time to Focus’ (TTF); when the user switches focus between real world content and worldlocked AR rendered content. Our results show that TTF increases exponentially with VAC. The increase is more pronounced at closer vergence distances in displays with focal distance of 1 D or longer. Finally, we showed that VAC may have a differential effect across age groups; specifically, older users may be affected more in closer focal and longer vergence distances 186‐189.

1.3″ 4K full‐color OLED microdisplay, which is able to realize peak brightness more than 10,000 nits together with appropriate operational lifetime of OLED devices, is introduced by addressing key technologies and challenges to develop advanced OLED microdisplay panels expecting application to the high‐quality AR/VR/MR head‐mounted displays

Microdisplay on silicon backplane is a promising architecture for XR systems. While digital circuitry is advantageous on silicon backplane, digital driving display introduces visual artifacts. First, we investigated the mechanism and solution of visual artifacts relevant for XR displays. Next, we proposed a intraframe time warp (ITW) to compensate for visual artifacts from head motion. ITW provide benefits to µOLED displays in XR systems by utilizing the higher frequency of digital driving. Lastly, we studied a 4K resolution digital µOLED displays expecting more than 40% of power saving in driving. The proposed digital driving solution with ITW is advantageous in power consumption and visual performance, however, the development of related technology is crucial to build the system.

Efficient and stable blue is the holy grail of OLED. beeOLED pioneers intra‐metallic Europium emitter that offer a unique combination of deep blue single peak emission spectrum, open shell electronic configuration for 100% efficiency, and potential of high operational stability as no organic bonds are weakened during light generation.

OLED device performance is intricately linked to microscopic processes influenced by molecular properties, creating a complex interdependence. Two key material properties in the design of balanced devices are ionization potential (IP) and electron affinities (EA). In this work we discuss how measured quantities relate to relevant energy levels in OLEDs. We present a simulation approach to compute IP and EA, benchmarked against experimental data, to shed light on the complexity of these properties. The thereby derived understanding has the potential to improve material alignment in OLED devices, ultimately improving efficiency.

An approximate beam propagation method is proposed as an intuitive simulation of the optics of the Pancharatnam–Berry phase (PPD). Using this method, the limitation of PPD in diffraction efficiency for large diffraction angle is made clear.

Usually, the resolution loss is serious in light field display due to the spatial multiplexing of several neighboring pixels to display images from different directions. With the limitation in the resolution of the flat panel display, the light field 3D display shows insufficient display size, image depth, or resolution. This article utilized the FLC with a fast response at 2 kHz and the optimized charge compensation method to achieve a high refresh time multiplexing method, which can effectively increase the display resolution by up to 32 times and is very promising for light field 3D displays in the future.

We propose an IGZO thin‐film transistor (TFT) with a multi‐layered gate dielectric for X‐ray flat‐panel detectors (FPDs). By minimizing X‐ray effects on the gate insulator and threshold‐voltage shift in the IGZO layer, we achieve high radiation hardness. These TFTs in FPD are ideal for medical imaging and nondestructive inspection.

We demonstrate the compensation of device‐to‐device variation in threshold voltage using programmable ferroelectric indium‐gallium‐zinc‐oxide thin‐film transistors. Furthermore, degradationinduced threshold voltage shift can be mitigated by programming, setting the characteristics back to their pristine state. This can be a promising alternative for the replacement of complex VT compensation circuits in display applications.

Augmented reality smart glasses, in general, have highest requirements as compared with smart phones and watches. Its display must be of light weight (a few grams), tremendous brightness (millions of nits), low power consumption (hundreds of milliwatts), and extremely small volume (a small fraction of cubic centimeter) to allow fashionable smart glass designs that would be socially and aesthetically favored by consumers. We have been focusing on micrometer‐scale native semiconductor MicroLED integration, to create miniaturized panels and projectors, which can be seamlessly integrated into the frames of the smart glasses. Among many technical aspects of microLED displays, two key parameters will be emphasized here. First, a microLED panel must be bright and efficient at the same time, especially for red microLED panel with small pixel pitch, such as 2.5 µm. Second, a microLED technology must enable reasonable reliability at a high energy density of, such as 10 watts per square centimeter. Vertically stacked native semiconductors monolithic integration, quantum dots conversion, perovskites, etc., will be discussed, in a context of facing challenges in materials and device physics and fulfilling the two requirements. In addition, an image quality correction method on the waveguide‐microLED display module will be proposed.

A varifocal augmented reality head‐up display (AR‐HUD) using Alvarez freeform lenses is proposed. One virtual image can be continuously adjusted between 2.5 and 7.5 m; the other is fixed at 7.5 m. Novel design enables the Alvarez lenses to have apertures larger than 15 cm and a system volume smaller than 10 L.

We propose a theoretically lossless pancake optics solution that incorporates a nonreciprocal polarization rotator sandwiched between two reflective polarizers. A proof‐of‐concept experiment using a commercially available Faraday rotator (FR) is implemented. The theoretically predicted 100% efficiency can indeed be achieved approximately by using two high extinction ratio reflective polarizers.

A high quality micro LED array is essential for AR/MR systems. Either transparent or non‐transparent full‐color displays that are better than 3000 PPI require unique integration techniques that need to be optimized. The corresponding effects brought by these photonic components to the systems can be discussed in this talk.

This article presents an AR HUD using micro LED technology for enhanced brightness and image quality. It utilizes micro LED's high brightness to merge AR images seamlessly with external views and employs Nature 3D technology to improve the HUD's 3D depth, significantly boosting vehicle safety.

In recent years, I‐III‐VI semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) have shown significant improvements that have unlocked new capabilities and end markets. Some typical examples of I‐III‐VI QDs are CuAlS2 (blue), AgInS2 (green), CuInSe2 (red) CuInSe2 (near‐IR), but other compositions and alloys are possible. These materials exhibit tunable photoluminescence (PL) emissions, and can achieve near unity PL quantum yield. They can have efficient broad emission, but also can have narrow emission, large Stokes shifts, and high optical extinction coefficients. These materials are often more stable, safer, and lower cost than alternatives such as CdSe, InP, and PbS or PbSe QDs. In this work, we discuss industrialization and scale‐up of I‐III‐VI QDs, starting with critical end uses related to spectrum optimization for greenhouses and solar energy. We also update on recent progress narrowing the emission linewidth (full‐width at half maximum) of I‐III‐VI QDs to the point that they are becoming competitive with legacy QDs used in displays and lighting.

Liver transplant oncology (TO) represents an area of increasing clinical and scientific interest including a heterogeneous group of clinical–pathological settings. Immunosuppressive management after LT is a key factor relevantly impacting result. However, disease-related guidance is still lacking, and many open questions remain in the field. Based on such a substantial lack of solid evidences, the Italian Board of Experts in Liver Transplantation (I-BELT) (a working group including representatives of all national transplant centers), unprecedently promoted a methodologically sound consensus conference on the topic, based on the GRADE approach. The group final recommendations are herein presented and commented. The 18 PICOs and Statements and their levels of evidence and grades of recommendation are reported and grouped into seven areas: (1) risk stratification by histopathological and bio-molecular parameters and role of mTORi post-LT; (2) steroids and HCC recurrence; (3) management of immunosuppression when HCC recurs after LT; (4) mTORi monotherapy; (5) machine perfusion and HCC recurrence after LT; (6) physiopathology of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes and immunosuppression, the role of inflammation; (7) immunotherapy in liver transplanted patients. The interest in mammalian targets of rapamycin inhibitors (mTORi), for steroid avoidance and the need for a reduction to CNI exposure emerged from the consensus process. A selected list of unmet needs prompting further investigations have also been developed. The so far heterogeneous and granular approach to immunosuppression in oncologic patients deserves greater efforts for a more standardized therapeutic response to the different clinical scenarios. This consensus process makes a first unprecedented step in this direction, to be developed on a larger scale.

Electronic paper (E‐paper) relies on reflecting ambient light to achieve information display, which mimics the appearance of printed papers, but owns the features of conventional electronic displays. The outstanding characters of E‐paper including visual health, comfortable outdoor viewing and ultra‐low power consumption, attracts increasingly interests in display society. E‐paper technology has evolved slowly in the field of color reproduction and video frame rate, until the arise of electrowetting display (EWD) technology. Benefits from the innately high speed response of microfluidics, EWD enables the displaying of color video content. In this report, the basic physics of electrowetting displays, including electro‐optical response and color reproduction method will be discussed. In this presentation, recent progress on above topics, including printed conductive pillar directed oil motion control and parallax issue in CMY stacked EWD device will also be discussed.

Developing a rapid fabrication method for crack-free opal films is a significant challenge with broad applications. We developed a microfluidic platform known as the “filter paper-enhanced evaporation microfluidic chip” (FPEE-chip) for the fabrication of photonic crystal and inverse opal hydrogel (IOPH) films. The chip featured a thin channel formed by bonding double-sided adhesive poly(ethylene terephthalate) with a polymethyl methacrylate cover and a glass substrate. This channel was then filled with nanosphere colloids. The water was guided to evaporate rapidly at the surface of the filter paper, allowing the nanospheres to self-assemble and accumulate within the channel under capillary forces. Experimental results confirmed that the self-assembly method based on the FPEE-chip was a rapid platform for producing high-quality opal, with centimeter-sized opal films achievable in less than an hour. Furthermore, the filter paper altered the stress release mechanism of the opal films during drying, resulting in fewer cracks. This platform was proven capable of producing large-grain, crack-free opal films of up to 30 mm2in size. We also fabricated crack-free IOPH pH sensors that exhibited color and size responsiveness to pH changes. The coefficient of variation of the gray color distribution for crack-free IOPH ranged from 0.03 to 0.07, which was lower than that of cracked IOPH (ranging from 0.07 to 0.14). Additionally, the grayscale peak value in 1 mm2of the crack-free IOPH was more than twice that of the cracked IOPH at the same pH. The FPEE-chip demonstrated potential as a candidate for developing vision sensors.

The present work reports the rapid sweat detection inside a PPE kit using a flexible humidity sensor based on hydrothermally synthesized ZnO (zinc oxide) nanoflowers (ZNFs). Physical characterization of ZNFs was done using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transmission infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), UV–visible, particle size analysis, Raman analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, and the hydrophilicity was investigated by using contact angle measurement. Fabrication of a flexible sensor was done by deposition on the paper substrate using the spin coating technique. It exhibited high sensitivity and low response and recovery times in the humidity range 10–95%RH. The sensor demonstrated the highest sensitivity of 296.70 nF/%RH within the humidity range 55–95%RH, and the rapid response and recovery times were also calculated and found as 5.10/1.70 s, respectively. The selectivity of the proposed sensor was also analyzed, and it is highly sensitive to humidity. The humidity sensing characteristics were theoretically witnessed in terms of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) and electronic properties of sensing materials in ambient and humid conditions. These theoretical results are evidence of the interaction of ZnO with humidity. Overall, the present study provides a scope of architecture-enabled paper-based humidity sensors for the detection of sweat levels inside PPE kits for health workers.

In his paper “The Psychogenesis of a Case of Homosexuality in a Woman” (1920), Freud tried to outline a general psychoanalytic approach to homosexuality by recounting the case of an 18-year-old girl sent to him by her father. The case, as told by Freud, makes for awkward reading today. Loewald’s theory of developmental narrative, differentiation, linking, and his notion of parricide as the individual giving voice to one’s self, offers a different lens through which to view it. Although Loewald did not write directly about the issue of homosexuality, in boys or girls, in “The Waning of the Oedipus Complex” he gives voice to the inner processes of separation and linking from parents, leading to mourning, through which the adolescent has to go. In this paper, I offer a reading of the Freud case using Loewald’s theory, which enables us to highlight homosexuality as a variation in the expression of human sexuality, rather than a pathological deviation as Freud implies, and presents the “unknown woman” as struggling with difficulties in mourning.

Recent advances in paper-based microsupercapacitors (p-MSCs) have attracted significant attention due to their potential as substrates for flexible electronics. This review summarizes progress in the field of p-MSCs, discussing their challenges and prospects. It covers various aspects, including the fundamental characteristics of paper, the modification of paper with functional materials, and different methods for device fabrication. The review critically analyzes recent advancements, materials, and fabrication techniques for p-MSCs, exploring their potential applications and benefits, such as flexibility, cost-effectiveness, and sustainability. Additionally, this review highlights gaps in current research, guiding future investigations and innovations in the field. It provides an overview of the current state of p-MSCs and offers valuable insights for researchers and professionals in the field. The critical analysis and discussion presented herein offer a roadmap for the future development of p-MSCs and their potential impact on the domain of flexible electronics.

The acidic soils of western Newfoundland require liming for successful production of most crops. Locally sourced paper mill waste wood ash (WA) and paper sludge (SL) have potential as cheaper alternatives to limestone (LIME). Two greenhouse experiments evaluated WA and SL as liming and soil conditioning amendments for annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) production. At 55 days after seeding, soil pH in WA (6.2 and 6.3) and wood ash and paper sludge (WASL) (6.0 and 6.3) were not different from that in LIME (6.0 and 6.5) for Experiments 1 and 2, respectively. However, pH in SL was 0.4 and 0.3 points lower than in LIME. Compared to LIME, WA, SL, and WASL produced 31%–52% and 57%–74% greater biomass yield in Experiments 1 and 2, respectively. N uptake was greater in WA (60 and 129 kg N ha−1) and WASL (51 and 97 kg N ha−1) compared to LIME (40 and 85 kg N ha−1), in Experiments 1 and 2, respectively. SL did not differ from LIME in Experiment 1, but reduced N uptake by 57% in Experiment 2. The results show significant potential of WA as an alternative amendment for liming and yield improvement of annual ryegrass grown in NL podzolic soils. However, SL has limited potential due to the risk of increasing N immobilization and residual soil mineral N when growing conditions are limiting. Combining SL with WA or biochar seemed to alleviate these risks. Overall, the adoption of these amendments for field production systems warrants serious consideration, following supplemental field studies to determine optimal application rates and timing. The podzolic soils of Newfoundland have low pH and fertility, hence require liming.Locally sourced wastes, such as paper mill wood ash (WA) and sludge (SL), could be used as liming and nutrient sources.WA was equivalent to limestone (LIME) in improving and sustaining optimal soil pH.WA produced 52% and 74% greater annual ryegrass yield than conventional LIME application in podzolic soils.

The massive use of paper has resulted in significant negative impacts on the environment. Fortunately, recent progress has been made in the field of rewritable paper, which has great potential in solving the increasing demand for paper while minimizing its environmental footprint. In this work, we report a green and economic strategy to develop ink-free rewritable paper by introducing hydrochromic covalent organic frameworks (COFs) in paper and using water as the sole trigger. When exposed to water or acidic solvents, two kinds of imino COFs change their colors reversibly from red to black. Additionally, a new visible absorption band appears, indicating that it can be transformed into another structure reversibly. This reversibility may be due to the isomerization from the diiminol to an iminol/cisketoenamine and its inability to doubly tautomerize to a diketoenamine. Specifically, we prepared the rewritable paper by loading these two COFs onto filter paper by using the decompression filtration method. When exposed to water, the paper undergoes a color change from red to black, which shows promising potential for applications in water-jet printing. Additionally, there is no significant performance degradation after 20 uses and 10 days between, further highlighting their potential as rewritable papers. To further improve its uniformity, we take the interface polymerization strategy to yield highly crystalline and more compact membranes, which are then transferred to paper to prepare writable papers. Our research has opened up a way for the application of COFs as a water-based printing material.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of boron compounds on cellulose fibers during recycling. Three recycling stages were conducted, applying boric acid and borax to bleached papers. Physical, mechanical, and optical properties were measured after each process. The highest water absorption (218 g/m2) was observed in test papers from the second recycling stage using 10% borax-treated pulps (10Bx2). Boric acid treatment notably improved burst strength, with the highest value (3.94 kPa m2/g) in the first recycling stage with 5.0% boric acid treatment (5Ba1). The highest tensile strength (49.48 Nm/g) occurred in the first recycling stage with 5.0% boric acid treatment, while the lowest (17.41 Nm/g) was in the second recycling stage (5Bx2) with 5.0% borax treatment. Tear strength exhibited different trends from burst and tensile strength, with notable improvements using 5.0% and 10% boric acid and 10% borax treatments on recovered cellulose fibers. The highest tear strength (9.20 Nm2/g) was achieved with 5.0% boric acid treatment (5Ba2) in the second recycling stage, followed by 8.21 Nm2/g with 10% boric acid treatment (10Ba1) in the first recycling stage. Tear strength trends differed from burst and tensile strength properties, regardless of treatment conditions.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of the type of data capture on the time and help needed for collecting patient-reported outcomes as well as on the proportion of missing scores. Methods: In a multinational prospective study, thyroid cancer patients from 17 countries completed a validated questionnaire measuring quality of life. Electronic data capture was compared to the paper-based approach using multivariate logistic regression. Results: A total of 437 patients were included, of whom 13% used electronic data capture. The relation between data capture and time needed was modified by the emotional functioning of the patients. Those with clinical impairments in that respect needed more time to complete the questionnaire when they used electronic data capture compared to paper and pencil (ORadj24.0; p= 0.006). This was not the case when patients had sub-threshold emotional problems (ORadj1.9; p= 0.48). The odds of having the researcher reading the questions out (instead of the patient doing this themselves) (ORadj0.1; p= 0.01) and of needing any help (ORadj0.1; p= 0.01) were lower when electronic data capture was used. The proportion of missing scores was equivalent in both groups (ORadj0.4, p= 0.42). Conclusions: The advantages of electronic data capture, such as real-time assessment and fewer data entry errors, may come at the price of more time required for data collection when the patients have mental health problems. As this is not uncommon in thyroid cancer, researchers need to choose the type of data capture wisely for their particular research question.

Despite these difficulties, Germany has a high paper recycling rate of over 99%. However, recyclers in Germany face obstacles and little government support, leading to resentment and a lack of attractiveness for investors. The article highlights the efforts of companies like Apple, Amazon, DS Smith, and Mondi in promoting paper recycling, as well as the need for collaboration and unity among recyclers and producers. It also mentions the high cost of fires at recycling plants and the importance of proper insurance coverage. ABSTRACTPressure-sensitive adhesives (PSA) present in pressure-sensitive tape or self-adhesive labels applied on paper pose substantial problems for the long-term conservation of the substrate because they degrade upon ageing, leaving embedded stains. This paper presents the development of a method to prepare agar-based solvent-gels with high organic solvent, and low water content. The objective is to provide conservators with a versatile, cheap, and easy solution to make solvent-gels for PSA removal, to be implemented as sole treatment or included in a multi-step treatment protocol. The treatment method proposed in the case-study aims at removing aged, rubber-based adhesive residues from the printed paper cover of a book. It includes the use of silicone-based solvent cyclomethicone D5 as a treatment-aid applied just before the application of the solvent-gel. The efficiency of D5 to prevent the formation of stains and tide-lines during local gel treatment is demonstrated, and potential side-effects are also pointed out.
