This article presents abstracts of papers presented at the 1964 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Criminology in Montreal, Canada, on December 28-30, 1964. The paper entitled Father-Daughter Incest: Treatment of the Family, reports on the treatment of twenty families with the problem of father-daughter incest where the father did not serve a prison sentence but was placed on probation. The paper entitled Evaluation of Records in Delinquency Research, focuses on the Southern California Records Matching Project which deals with the manner in which the records of delinquency adjudicating agencies at the local level maybe linked with Federal Census Records in order to maximize the efficiency of data collection and analysis. The paper entitled Juvenile Court Judge's Institute, summarized attacks on the Juvenile Court from any quarters, the weaknesses that inspire these attacks, and the crucial role that the Juvenile Court has to play in spearheading the introduction of personalized justice in the administration of the criminal law. The paper entitled A Spectrum of Sexual Problems Found in an Out-Patient Setting, focuses on the Forensic Clinic which was established in 1956. It is an out-patient division of the Toronto Psychiatric Hospital operated by the Ontario Department of Health under provincial statute.

This article reports that the members and friends of the American Society of Criminology desiring to present scholarly papers at the 1964 annual meeting of the Society in Montreal, Canada should let their intentions be known no later than May 15, 1964.

This article presents updates on meetings and events related to family living and marriage at universities and associations in the U.S. as of May 1946. At the two sessions of the American Sociological Society, papers presented were devoted to the topic of family. The first, on the Family and the War, chairman, Ray E. Baber, discussed papers by Mildred Fairchild on Compilation of Data Regarding American Women at Work and at Home in World War II, by Leonard Bloom on Familial Adjustments of Japanese-Americans to Relocation, and by John F. Cuber on A Study of the Adjustmental Problems of Returning Service Men and Their Spouses. The Association for Childhood Education, on the other hand, held a restricted 1946 Annual Meeting in Cincinnati, Ohio, on April 1946, limited to approximately eight hundred people. In addition, the Child Study Association of America held its Annual Conference on March 4, 1946.

This article presents several news and notes related to the family research. A Research Conference on The Family has been planned and sponsored jointly by the Elizabeth McCormick Fund and NCFR in Chicago on October 31, November 1 and 2, 1956. Upon suggestion of the Research section and action by the board, the E.W. Burgess award was created and is to be given to the person who does the best paper during the year in the marriage and family field. Income from the E.W. Burgess fund will be given as the prize and the paper will be read at the annual meeting and conference. The Iowa Council on Family Relations under the vigorous leadership of Harold Saunders, Past President, and President David M. Fulcomer have established, with the cooperation of the Iowa Federation of Women's Clubs, six family conferences, all to be held this fall in various sections of the state. The 1957 Forum, one of an annual series conducted by the Council in the interests of its fifty-one national organization members, will focus on fostering mental health in the U.S. with emphasis on constructive actions and attitudes that may be taken by all health organizations.

This paper looks at meetings and events related to the field of family life education in the U.S. in 1942-1943. As a part of its program for wives of service men, the Association for Family Living presented a special series on Marriage is What We Make It during the month of January 1943. Fortune Magazine offers free extra copies of their public opinion survey of a self-portrait of high school youth: what it thinks of itself, its country, and its future. A new project of the Commission on Marriage and the Home, Federal Council of Churches is the observance of Christian Family Week, the second week in May. This is in process of becoming a national observance of outstanding value. A folder on The Christian Family in War Time sumps up the highlights of the recent Chicago Conference on Conserving Christian Family Life in War Time. Family Life Radio Forum. The Family Life Radio Forum Director Alice Sowers, professor of family life education, University of Oklahoma, announces a program continuing in 1943 on Our Great American Family, as having the primary purposes of focusing attention upon the importance of home and family life during wartime, of awakening everyone, young and old, to the part families can have in winning the war, and of impressing upon everyone the importance of preserving in family life the ideals we are fighting for.

The article presents several news briefs related to the United Chapters of Alpha Kappa Delta. The Bogardus Alpha Kappa Delta Research Award for the year 1950 will be offered for the two papers dealing with sociology. In 1949, the Sociology Club at the University of Florida went into action to get a chapter of the national honorary sociological fraternity established on campus. The Gamma Chapter of Iowa has elected Walter A. Lunden as the new faculty adviser and national representative.

The article presents information on the developments in the various chapters of the sociological society Alpha Kappa Delta. Four new members were initiated into Beta chapter of Missouri at the January meeting: Bertram Black, Shirley Dunie, Ed. McCurtain, and Johann Mokre. Programs for the year included reports on papers presented at the meetings of the American Sociological Society by Florence Schaper, Johann Mokre, L.L. Bernard, William Dee, and Gilbert Balkin. The Gamma chapter held its annual initiation and dinner on April 5, 1941. Twenty-three graduate and undergraduate students were initiated. Imre Ferenczi, formerly of the International Labor Office in Geneva was inducted as an honorary member. The Epsilon chapter of Ohio initiated seven new members during the year: Harry Husman, Mary Jane McEvilley, Selma Michaelson, Janet Reed, Marvin Walker, Oliver Werner, and Helen Wolfson. The Alpha chapter believes that students may be interested in the various types of positions to which Alpha Kappa Delta members have been appointed.

This paper deals with the phenomena of self-help groups of criminals. The group which the study centers around is called the Self Development Group (SDG). Since no effective method of treatment had been developed or implemented following the principle of total absence of professional staff, the SDG came into effect then as a formal organization. Structurally, SDG is similar to Alcoholics Anonymous and Synanon. It is a voluntary organization which recruits its members through personal contacts and educational programs conducted in various correctional institutions where groups have been set up. The official criteria for membership are simply a desire to stay out of prison and a willingness to help others do the same. Moreover, there are no dues collected from the members. All that is asked is that they make a meaningful contribution to the group in terms of attendance and discussion at meetings. Each group that meets in prison is limited to ten members. In respect to the age variable, the members are significantly younger than the general population. Moreover, the services which SDG offers to a man upon his release from prison are discussed so that he knows what to do and is assured that when he is released from prison he will have the same type of concern and help that he had while in prison plus the added assistance of a ride home and some money to help get a start in the community. The concept of a group of this type that can operate in the total institution with the kind of interaction which can interest and benefit convicts and also be viable in the community where the hardest adjustment problems are encountered is most encouraging and interesting in these times of deep concern for law and order. Certainly more time should be spent in the study of this phenomenon. Groups such as SDG should be sanctioned and encouraged if the research reveals that their efforts are indeed beneficial.

This article reports on the formation of the World Congress that aims to deal with the problems of human infertility. In October 1951, an International Fertility Association was organized at a meeting in Brazil, and this international association, jointly with the American Society for the Study of Sterility, decided to call a World Congress on Fertility and Sterility. This First World Congress was held in New York in May 1953. It was called together primarily to provide an opportunity for students of the subject on the clinical and research levels to exchange information and to correlate procedures, techniques, and therapies available for the care of the infertile couple. The popularity of the congress is evidenced by the fact that it was attended by delegates from every continent. The Program Committee of the congress recognized that a conference dealing with the problems of human fertility must concern itself in part with the general social and demographic aspects of national birth rates and population growths. Most of the scientific papers and the discussions of the congress dealt with the physical and organic aspects of infertility. New techniques were described and new methods of diagnosis and therapy were discussed.

This article criticizes Nelson Foote's paper entitled, Appraisal of NCFR With Recommendations, which deals with family life education. The National Council on Family Relations (NCFR) attempts to combine a program of action with a forum type of program. If the NCFR decides to expand, then it would be logical for the Marriage & Family Living magazine to expand its range of interests. If the name is to be changed, the name Marriage and Family Relations is suggested. Family relations means principally the interpersonal relationships between husband and wife, and may include parent and child. It does not mean family economics, housing, employment, health, education, religion and other things for which the NCFR has national sections or committees. Under the heading Purposes and Goals, Foote makes the assumption that an interprofessional federation dealing with interrelated aspects of a common problem cannot itself become a professional society or cannot be an interdisciplinary body aimed at uniting the several social sciences.

This article highlights the Annual Meeting of the National Council on Family Relations held in New York City in December 1949. Those who have come from all over the nation have learned much to take home and will need their train and plane rides to digest new ideas and to catch up on their sleep, as Evelyn Millis Duvall has prescribed. Before some leave, no doubt release of tension will come at the big blow off in Times Square as the old year is replaced by the new. But much more will be taken home and used than pleasant memories of a well planned, well organized, and well operated Conference. None will forget the 'quotable quotes' which have come from papers, conferences, committee meetings, and open houses. Muriel Brown gave attendees their very first at the general session on the beginning day. Earl Koos did not like the obvious gaps he tagged on the title of his talk on education and services for family living. Leona Baumgartner told attendees the impact of public health on her family had been terrific. She illustrated that its impact on all families was equally terrific, ranging from powder puffs to salad greens.

The "Merrill-Palmer Quarterly," publishes papers representing the various disciplines bearing on human development, personality, and social relation--including conceptual analyses of problems under investigation, results of exploratory studies, illustrative case material, completed research reports, new approaches to theory and research, and papers which critically examine existing approaches or place them in a broader perspective. In cooperation with the NCFR Executive Board, the "Merrill-Palmer Quarterly of Behavior and Development," is pleased to offer reduced rate subscriptions to NCFR members.

The article gives information about the NCFR annual meeting to be held at Ames, Iowa during August 19-21, 1959. Theme of the conference is "Growing Individual Values Within the Family." Research papers or summaries of papers to be considered for the section meetings of the conference are Research; Parent Education; Family Life Education in the Community, Schools, Colleges; Religion; Cooperative Nursery Schools and Counseling. Each research paper should implement or be directly related to the theme of the Conference.

The article presents information on the meetings of the Gamma Chapter of Texas of the sociological society Alpha Kappa Delta at the University of Texas. At the first meeting for the spring semester, Professor Genevieve Wilcox, a member of Gamma Chapter, read a very interesting paper on "The History of Laredo (Texas)." The next three meetings we considered the following papers, given by members of the Gamma Chapter: "The Background of European Sociology," by Kathleen Thompson; "The Background of American Sociology," by Josephine Evans; and "Trends in Attitudes Toward the Data With Which Sociology Deals," by Rex Hopper.

This article presents information on the annual meeting of the American Society of Criminology to be held from October 31-November 2, 1969 at the Neil House in Columbus, Ohio. The Ohio State University will host the meeting. Doctor Simon Dinitz from Department of Sociology at Ohio State University, is chairman of the local arrangement committee. A reservation form for the meeting is enclosed in the May 1969 issue of Criminologica publication. Members and interested parties are urged to make reservations early so as to facilitate completion of arrangements for the conference. Moreover, the tentative program consists of Power and Negotiated Justice (panel discussion), The Ex-Convict in Society (panel discussion), Education in Criminology (panel discussion), Student Papers (papers), Social Policy and the Administration of Justice (panel discussion) and Great Figures in American Criminology (luncheon presentation).

This section presents some highlights of meetings and other events related to family life held in the U.S. from April to August 1944. The central theme of the twenty-sixth annual meeting of the American Home Economics Association was The Family in the World of Tomorrow. The meetings opened with a joint session with the National Conference on Family Relations. Two general sessions were devoted to Postwar Levels of Living, with papers on Improving the Nutritional Status of American People by Theodore W. Schultz and Lydia J. Robert. On the other hand, the third annual conference on Conservation of Marriage and the Family was held April 14. The sessions opened with two student forums for high school and college age on Our Wartime Problems. Addresses were given on An Endocrinologist Looks at Marriage and Family Life, and Prevention and Treatment of Juvenile Delinquency. Meanwhile, the Toledo Preschool Council, an organization sponsored by the Family Life Education Program of Toledo, held an institute for parents, with Mary Shattuck Fisher of Vassar as leader. There were three meetings with lectures and discussions on the following topics: War Time Fathers, Educational Experiences for Young Children, and Some Problems of Guidance.

This section offers a look at conferences related to family and family relations in the U.S. in 1942. The fifth annual meeting of the National Conference on Family Relations, in a joint session with the Mid-West Conference on Family Relations, will be held at the Hollenden Hotel, Cleveland, Ohio, December 28-30, 1942 at the time that the different Social Science Associations are meeting in that city. At a meeting of the Executive Committee on April 25, 1942 it was decided to organize the main program around the central topic, Marriage in Wartime. The meeting of the Connecticut Council on Family Relations, April 27, 1942, took the form of a panel on the Effects of Wartime Tensions upon Children, and was led by Leo Simmons, Yale University. At the Illinois Conference on Family Relations, May 8, 1942, in Urbana, Illinois, papers were given on Divorce in the 102 Counties of Illinois, by Clarence W. Schroeder, Bradley College, Consumption Patterns of Illinois Rural Families during War Times, by Ruth Crawford Freeman, University of Illinois, and on Family Factors in Sexual Inversion, by Harriet Mowrer, Evanston, Illinois. The joint Indiana-Kentucky Conference on Family Relations was held in Indianapolis on May 23-24, 1942 under the co-chairmanship of Lester M. Jones, De Pauw University, and Merton Oyler, University of Kentucky. James H. Peeling, Butler University, was in charge of local arrangements.

The article presents information the meetings and activities of the Delta of Ohio chapter of the Alpha Kappa Delta organization at Delaware, Ohio-based Ohio Wesleyan University. The chapter has been holding its usual monthly meetings on the first Tuesday of each month. It was early decided that, for the most part, the programs should consist of student reports on articles in the learned journals and the presentation of student research papers. Delta is pointing its efforts toward several new projects. First, the group is sponsoring one of the daily chapel programs. All in all Delta seems to be a going organization with a proper membership, a functioning program committee, challenging faculty advisers, and several all campus projects.

This article presents information on the meeting of the Alpha Chapter of Indiana of the sociological society Alpha Kappa Delta at the Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, held on October 21, 1937. Professor Read Bain, of Miami University, addressed the Alpha Chapter of Indiana University with his paper "Sociology As a Natural Science." Bain introduced his subject by discussing different concepts of the status of sociology. Next, Bain turned to philosophy to establish the basis on which sociology is proceeding. Tracing the history of epistemology and ontology, he pointed out the changes of thought.

Bernard of the Beta Chapter of Missouri of the society at Washington University as the president of the society; Arrangements to present abstracts or summaries of most of the papers presented at the National Students' Sociological Conference at the Chicago, Illinois meeting in December 1936.

"Eye on the Family" is the theme for the 1962 annual meetings of the association NCFR to be held at Storrs, Connecticut, from August 22-24. Papers and suggestions for the section sessions may be sent to the section chairmen or to the program chairman.

The 1959 Meeting of the American Sociological Society will be held in Chicago, during September 3-5. It is planned to devote several sessions to marriage and the family. All readers with pertinent research material are urged to submit papers for consideration to professor William Kephart.

The article discusses the developments concerning the publication of the international sociology honor society Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD) in the U.S. The twenty-six national representatives has responded to the editor's request for information about the number of copies of the publication to be mailed to each chapter. The next number of publication will go to the printer on February 15, 1952. Dr. T. Earl Sullenger, national president made an announcement that the National Chapters of AKD will be offering an award for each of two research papers submitted by members of AKD.

The article discusses the relationship of the chapters of Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD) with sociology clubs. Some campuses consider the AKD chapter as a continuous stable organization, while sociology clubs lack status and manifest less unity and continuity. In other campuses, sociology clubs receive prominent space in college paper while AKD chapter is small and its meetings receive little attention outside the membership. The sociology club is open to all and is a feeder of select students for the AKD chapter. Election in the AKD means a student should hold himself ready to any direction whenever the sociology club call on for assistance.

The article reports that the Gamma Chapter of Illinois of the sociological society Alpha Kappa Delta at the University of Illinois, has elected new officers. Apart from the election the new officers, the members enjoyed Professor D.R. Taft's paper "The Conscientious Objector in the Federal Prisons." Taft investigated this situation while working with the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

Information about several papers discussed at the meeting of the Alpha Kappa Delta student program at Ohio State University, Ohio, in December 1941. Chapter representatives approved resolution concerning responsibilities of each member of the student program. Every chapter representative is expected to disseminate the program to the attention of the student members and to assist the student program committee in every way possible to arrange other programs.

The article reports on the meetings of the Beta Chapter of Missouri of the sociological society Alpha Kappa Delta at Washington University in Saint Louis Missouri. At the October 1938 meeting, Elbert L. Hooker, a professor in sociology, read a very interesting paper on the sociology of fraternal life. At the November 1938 meeting, Professor Deborah Jensen gave an illuminating sociological account of her observations in Ireland, England, Holland, Germany and Denmark earlier in the year. Another meeting will be held on December 9, 1938, and will be addressed by Professor Julius Jensen on the working of Socialized Medicine in present day Germany.

This article presents information on the sixth annual meeting of the National Student Sociological Conference to be held on December 29, 1938 in Detroit, Michigan, in conjunction with the meeting of the American Sociological Society. The aim is to exchange ideas of outstanding students of Sociology, as well as to provide an interesting program consisting of the presentation and discussion of student papers and research projects. As part of the program, a student luncheon and meeting for the selection of next year's officers will be held. All students attending and registered in the conference will be eligible to take part.

The article focuses on the meetings of the Beta of Missouri chapter of the organization Alpha Kappa Delta at Washington University. At the October meeting, Professor David Carpenter presented a paper on his bicycle tour of Europe, stressing the customs of the various peoples he observed. At the November meeting Professor John Winget presented a resume of his thesis.

The article provides clarification to the operations of the American Association of Criminology in Massachusetts. The association was incorporated as a non-profit association in 1955, with Loreen M. Laitinen as president, and Wayne Laitinen as secretary-treasurer. The secretary-treasurer of the association reports that he assumed responsibility for developing the Constitution of the Association and that he appoints the officers and chairmen of the committees. Annual meetings have been limited to the formalities required by law, and there have been no congresses for the reading of papers and exchange of professional information. There are apparently no members of committees other than the appointed chairmen, no committee meetings and no committee reports made to members. No formal vote or action was taken by the Business Meeting of the American Society of Criminology with reference to the association or other criminological societies but it appeared to be the consensus that the American Association of Criminology does not meet the normal minimum expectations of a professional society in terms of its organization, procedures and program and that it cannot be recognized as a professional society by the American Society of Criminology.

This article focuses on an increase in the membership of the American Society of Criminology, as of November 1964. The suggestion has been made that the society undertake the publication of the papers presented at its annual meetings. under the cover of Proceedings of the American Society of Criminology. If this is found to be a wise move, undoubtedly the society would have to increase its dues by two dollars or two and a half. It is hoped that you will express your opinion on the possible publication of an annual Proceedings, either to the Secretary or to the President of the Society. The members of the society should be alerted to the fact that forces are at work in several leading organizations, to improve the training of persons in direct contact with the control of crime and delinquency and to improve the research projects in delinquency and crime, upon which we must rely for insights. All these matters were given thorough consideration at Arden House Conference on the Manpower and Training Shortage in the Correction Field held at Arden House, New York in the latter part of June this year. It should be noted that the society will devote two sessions at its Montreal meeting in December to interdisciplinary programs of training for the field of delinquency and crime control.

This article provides information on the program for the 1964 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Criminology to be held from December 28 to 30, 1964 in Montreal, Quebec. Organized as a three-day conference, first day's program will be concerned with interdisciplinary programs of training and research in criminology; concluding with the annual business meeting. The second day's program will open with a continuation of papers on interdisciplinary training. The annual awards of the Society will be presented at a luncheon meeting to be held at the Helen de Champlain Restaurant located at historic and picturesque Saint Helen's Island. The role of the police in modern democratic society will be the theme of the Tuesday afternoon session. An evening program will be directed to a consideration of the abnormal sex offender. The second day's sessions will be concluded with a reception at the University of Montreal.

This article reports on the plans for the expansion of Criminologica, into a larger journal effective with the May 1964 issue. To be included are papers which have been presented at the annual conference, as well as original contributions from researchers and teachers in criminology. An Editorial Board, consisting of the president and vice-presidents of the Society, has been established. Charles L. Newman will continue to act as editor.

The article provides information regarding the news bulletin "Alpha Kappa Deltagram" from the Alpha Kappa Delta society chapter in California. The bulletin is issued four times a year in pamphlet or mimeographed paper and appeared during April, July, October and December. The first issue will be mailed to all students and alumni members of the chapter. The several benefits of the bulletin include arousing the interest of the members, assists in the development of events and maintaining the interests toward sociology.
