This chapter seeks to position 'appropriation theory' within literary studies in Australia, providing an overview of the development, demise and the resurgence of the theory and its application as a method of critique. The concept of 'appropriation' is yet to be clearly defined in the standard literary studies reference texts. Interchangability of the terms 'appropriation', 'adaptation' and 'intertextuality' within literary studies can result in the occlusion of critique. Theories of appropriation might explore and identify; appropriative devices and acts, and authorial right and its prioritisation. The critical omission of theories which conceptualise 'appropriation' has implications for gender, race, class and intellectual property discourses within Australian literary studies. This paper will focus on how constructions of "Australian" are interpreted by a selection of research participants in an interethnic and interracial community, in this case Darwin in the Northern Territory. The interpretation of who may or may not be constructed as "Australian" has an impact on an individual's sense of belonging in Australia. This paper argues that the notion of ambiguous identifications is an appropriate one to examine the ways different people view themselves in relation to Australianness. After providing some examples of the various ways people see themselves as Australian or otherwise, this paper examines the seemingly innocuous question "Where are you from?" This question can be a key signifier of belonging. Finally there are examples of other more explicit or offensive ways that some are made to feel excluded from the notion of who is an Australian. This paper argues it is more important than ever to be aware of the discursive features of inclusionary and exclusionary social practices and to recognise that for many, even in a highly interracial and interethnic diverse community, the image of an Australian remains white, with an Anglo or Celtic heritage. This paper examines the evolution of expenditure budgeting in Australia, at both the federal or commonwealth and state levels. The paper begins with a brief constitutional and fiscal overview, goes on to examine the evolution of expenditure budgeting at the commonwealth level over the 1970s, continues with a discussion of innovations in expenditure budgeting at the state level in the late 1970s, and concludes with a comparative assessment of the state of expenditure budgeting in Australia. Chapter 1 of the book "Second Language Writing Strategies: A Study of Three Chinese Post-Graduate Students" is presented. It introduces the coverage of the study and argues that a better understanding of writing strategies can facilitate the improvement of second language writing by Chinese university students. The study investigates the writing of three Chinese students in Australia in order to find out what strategies they report while writing academic papers in English. It also seeks to explain why they use certain writing strategies.

Central Queensland University (CQU) is different from most Australian universities. From the 1980s, its engagement with and commitment to international education extended across CQU's faculties and courses, bringing vast change in two decades. This chapter identifies the various stages of CQU's international education activity and determines both the motives and outcomes of a range of activities on- and offshore. To what extent were the motives for its unprecedented expansion in the later 1990s driven by limited access to domestic students and funding? What kinds of education was it in a position to provide? The resulting contextual analysis of the advantages and vagaries of international education at CQU is based upon a close study of the paper-based and online records over the period in question. In this article the author discusses issues of violence in Australian sports. He comments on the papers of several authors such as Roy Hay and Ian Warren regarding the violence in soccer, saying that their representation of violence in sport could misinterpret the true perception of the violence. He cites that the increasing discussion of sport as business and athletes as entertainers can have several impact on the management and understanding of violence in sport.

The article presents an overview of a study on the writing strategies used by Chinese post-graduate students in an Australian higher education institution while writing academic papers in English. The study aims to stimulate research in second language (L2) writing theory and practice. Also, the students' understanding of English and Chinese writing processes, the issue of transfer of Chinese writing into English writing and cultural influence of native language on L2 writing were explored as well.
