The article explores the life of author Beverly Cleary as growing child. The family of Cleary moved to Portland, Oregon when she was 6 years old enjoying her life on Klickitat Street. Cleary found reading a challenge even if she was in Grade 1 making her fear school. When Cleary entered high school she had become an avid reader and a writer and had her story titled "The Green Christmas" published in the school paper.

The article explores the development of the writing skills of author Beverly Cleary at a young age. Cleary's confidence to continue writing happened when she was in Grade 7 wherein she was able to write an imaginary story appreciated by her teacher. She became a writer at the school paper at Grant High School where she attended her high school. She mostly wrote for her assignments and not most of creative writing.
