The paper offers a publication and study of all Glagolitic graffiti inscriptions from Novgorod known today. There are 20 inscriptions from St. Sophia Cathedral and two from the churches in the vicinity of the town - the church of the Annunciation at Gorodishche and St. George's Cathedral of the Yuriev Monastery. Only eleven inscriptions have been known to scholars until recently. The Novgorodian Glagolitic graffiti contain some valuable anthroponymic data: the unique names Str?i, Dědjata, *Naš?goi, the typical Novgorodian names Vojata and Zavid?, an interesting variant of the name Grigorii - Grigorija. According to the stratigraphic and paleographic data the whole Novgorodian Glagolitic "corpus" is dated no earlier than the mid-eleventh century and no later than the mid-twelfth. The linguistic evidence shows that all inscriptions were written by the East Slavs. The widespread use of the Glagolitic script in Novgorod speaks about the city's role as one of the main centers of the Glagolitic writing between the second half of the 11th and the first half of the 12th century. Abstract: This paper is devoted to one of the semantic elements of “Finnish discourse” in Russian literature, so-called “Northern love”. This notion includes the paradoxical love for austere Northern nature and for the unfriendly but attractive Northern (Finnish) girl as well. Both components were prepared and well elaborated within the poetry of Russian Romanticism but kept their actuality during the Modernist era. After Vladimir Solovʼevʼs linking of the love for Lake Saimaa with his permanent seeking for the Eternal Feminine, Russian Symbolists of different sorts and generations made the “Northern love” an essential part of the image of Finland. Abstract: In this paper the author discusses Boris Akuninʼs novel Altyn-tolobas. The two plot lines in the novel (the seventeenth-century journey of Kornelius von Dorn and the journey to the “new Russia” by his descendant) are shown to run parallel, as they both appear to involve the transfer from “civilized” European cultural space to “uncivilized” Russia. However, it is demonstrated that this simple opposition of “Russia” and “The West” is much more ambiguous and complicated than it might seem at first glance. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The paper deals with problems of using the Latin and French languages under the highbrows. Both languages functioned as a special means of conversation within the groups where they meant the group identity of the speakers. Russian Linguist E. D. Polivanov nominated such languages social group dialects. Latin was the language of the literate in the early Middle Ages and later till the 18th century. French served as a mean of communication of the social elite in Europe in 18th and 19th centuries. The paper defines the terms of a myth and reality in comparison with the terms Russia and Russian language. Historically, it is proven that the myth about Russia has existed in the minds of Croats. The terms are analysed through the prism of Croats and their view on Russia as a state (including the period of the USSR), on the status of the Russian language in daily use and in universities, i. e. within intelligentsia: from the period when the Russian language was an official and an obligatory foreign language tbr Croats, till now, when the needs of tourism produce new potential pupils of the Russian language. As a conclusion, there is an analysis of the facts, on which the myth of Russia was based on in the minds of Croats, and their opinion (political, social and language) on Russia as a slate and its official language). Abstract: The article explores the representation of St. Petersburg in 18th-century Russian panegyric literature from the point of view of rhetorical topoi. The ancient and humanistic tradition of laus urbis provided established categories for the conceptualisation of the new capital that were first adapted by Gavriil Buzhinskii and Feofan Prokopovich. Following the development of specific St. Petersburg topoi in the 18th century the paper focuses on the perception of urban space both in panegyric literature and visual art. It shows how the point of view in the description of the city changes from Lomonosov''s encomiastic prose and Makhaev''s lithographies to Derzhavin''s odes and Quarenghi''s aquarelles.
