- Abstract
Introduction: Mobile devices and mobile applications facilitate access to clinical evidence at the point-of-care. Medical libraries play an important role in medical trainees' education, by subscribing to quality resources and by providing help and guidance on what apps to use. This study's goal was to explore medical trainees' mobile applications use in the clinical setting to help inform collection development's decisions and to provide insight on educational outreach. Perceived barriers and benefits of medical app use by clinical trainees was also explored. Methods: A brief online survey (English and French) was sent to all University of Ottawa clerkship medical students and residents. The questionnaire consisted of multiple choices, Likert-scale, and open-ended questions. Results: 208 English and 9 French responses were received. UpToDate was the most frequently used app, followed by MedCalc, Spectrum (CHEO) and Medscape. Respondents used medical apps mostly before and after meeting with patients and rarely while interacting with patients. Main benefits identified of medical app use were helping with decision-making, quick access to trustworthy clinical information, help with diagnosis and treatment options (e.g. medication dosage, drug interaction). Main barriers identified were costs, appearing unprofessional, lack of Canadian content and spotty hospital WiFi. Conclusion: Libraries' involvement in providing access to trustworthy clinical resources to medical trainees is important to help shape trainees' development as medical professionals. Outreach to learners in the clinical setting is crucial to educate on what apps are available to them through the library collection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Collection development is a most important process of a library. This process increases the reading materials of the library for the satisfaction of the reader approach. Collection development policy acts as a guide for selecting library materials. It helps to maintain library cooperation and communication between library staff. This process increases the reading materials of the library for the satisfaction of the reader approach. Collection development policies are written statements of goals and evaluative parameters to guide decision-making when adding material to a library collection. A large number of e-resources collection has become a challenge to libraries as a lot of information is now available to the public without having to visit and use the traditional library. American Library Association states that the collection development policies document which defines the scope of a library's existing collections, plan for the continuing development of resources, identify collection strength and outline the relationship between selection philosophy and institutions goals, general selection criteria, and intellectual freedom. In electronic environment collection development policy select tools and processes, set the principles for the management of electronic resources, allocating the budget for buying of e-resources. Due to information technology, most of the libraries are involved in the sharing of the e-resources in many ways. The Collection development policy must indeed be clear whether the collection is in print or electronic form and also it should full fill the user's demand. This article tried to explore the different collection development policies for e-resources. The information provided in this article is based on secondary data. AGILE software development ,PUBLIC libraries ,DATA modeling - Abstract
Objective - To examine the advantages and obstacles of using Agile (an approach to project management) principles to guide collection development work in ways that allow libraries to better address user needs while increasing transparency and collaboration in their processes. Design - Descriptive case study. Setting - Libraries at a private, R1 university (doctoral university - very high research activity). Subjects - Five cross-disciplinary teams of three to six people, with each team focusing on a separate strategic aspect of library collections work (Communications and Data Visualization, E-Resource Contract Negotiation, Serials Workflow Analysis, Demand Driven Acquisitions, and Serials Budget Projection & Assessment). Methods - The authors facilitated group reflection sessions for the teams to surface outcomes of employing Agile practices and also as a means through which they could learn from their experiences with Agile. The teams engaged in reflection throughout the year-long process where they were asked to share their work, respond to the work of the other teams, and contemplate their own learning and development as a member of a team. Main Results - Using Agile principles to structure and direct collection development work allowed the libraries to meet their stated goals of spending all available funds on relevant materials within the time frame allotted. This style of collaborative work benefitted from recognition of interrelated information needs, willingness to prioritize experimentation over seeking formal training, centering user needs in planning stages, and practicing reflection as a powerful learning tool. Additionally, the authors noted a strengthening of core skills held in high value throughout libraries, such as leadership and project management. Task-oriented skills that included capabilities like data visualization and operational analysis also progressed through learning by working on cross-functional teams. The authors offered guidance for applying these lessons to situations in other libraries that can be generalized to fit other projects. Conclusion - Based on their experiences with adopting Agile practices, the authors offered scalable approaches for implementing Agile that speak to employee buy-in and the overall impact of projects undertaken in this manner. Training that reflects a library's authentic level of investment in Agile, whether minimal or extensive, is crucial to realizing positive outcomes. The authors also recognized that resistance to change and discomfort with working under transparent conditions will present challenges for many libraries in aligning workflows with Agile methodology. However, Agile did allow for positive shifts toward more investment in shared work on team and individual levels. While failure in Agile projects is more visible and therefore more intimidating, librarians can find themselves able to learn from and correct mistakes more efficiently. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The main purpose of this study was to examine trends and developments in budgeting and financial management of collections in university libraries of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), Pakistan. Locally there is limited literature available on the financial management of university libraries in Pakistan. However, previously no study of this nature has been conducted. The present study aimed to close this gap through a sector wide survey through face-to-face interviews in 26 universities of the province of KPK. The fieldwork was conducted by principle author in June, 2015 with the specific objectives of investigating financial management of collections in the university libraries of KPK. The study found that no specific norms are followed by the university administration in allocating budget for libraries. The role of Library and Information Science (LIS) professionals in the financial management of libraries seems to be more of facilitators than decision makers. The overall analysis demonstrates that university libraries in KPK are more vulnerable to changes in future because of their reliance and dependence on expenditure allocations from parent institutions that are heavily dependent on public funding from the government. The study suggests that libraries with meager budget allocations cannot develop collections in line with the changing trends and needs of the users. Apart from it in the face of low budget allocation, there is an apprehension that instead of expanding collections, university libraries have been obsessed to maintain their old collection sizes and if weeding takes place then it would mean that collections have shrunk in size. Therefore, LIS professionals in the university libraries of KPK must be aggressive in forging connections both within their institutions and among their communities at large to recognize that financial management of collections is the only important step for effective collection development which will ultimately bring LIS professionals both satisfaction and rewards. - Abstract
This paper aims to explore how the Semantic Web technologies effect the digital library collections and what are the challenges faced by digital collections in Semantic Web environment. The present study is based on substantial literature review on the impact of Semantic Web technologies on digital collections of libraries. The search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and Google Scholar were used to find the relevant literature for the study. Online databases such as Pro Quest, Science Direct, Emerald, and JSTORE were also used to find the relevant literature of the study. Databases of Library Sciences Library and Information Science and Technology Abstracts (LISTA) and Library Information Science Abstracts (LISA) were also used to find the relevant literature of the study. Library, linked data technologies, Semantic Web, digital library and digital collections were the main keywords which were used to find the relevant literature for the study. The evolution of linked data technologies and Semantic Web has changed the traditional role of the libraries. Traditional libraries are converting into digital libraries and digital libraries are in a struggle to publish their resources and on the Web using XML based metadata standards. With the publication of digital collections of libraries on Semantic Web, users could be capable to get their required quality information of libraries round-the-clock. It has improved the Web visibility of the digital collections of the libraries. Digital collections of libraries are being exploited by search engines to make their web appearance more credible and authentic. It has decreased the storage cost of the libraries and has reduced the chances of duplication of resources on the Web. Different digital libraries such as Europeana, Digital Public Library of Americana, Library of Congress, National Library of France, National Library of Spain, and The British Library have been connecting and publishing their digital collections on the Web for wider community usage. There are also some challenges to implement Semantic Web technologies in digital libraries such as copy-rights and legal issues, privacy concerns of libraries, MARC based records of the libraries, reluctance of libraries to adopt it, requirement of technical infrastructure, technical disparity between libraries metadata standards and Web-based standards, complex technologies of linked data such as RDF, RDF/XML, OWL, SPARQL etc. This is the first study of its kind to find the impact of Semantic Web technologies on digital collections of libraries. It will guide policy and decision makers to facilitate the libraries to make their metadata and digital collections available on Semantic Web for wider community usage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
With a wealth of early music prints now available online via The Library of Congress digital collections, archive.org, IMSLP, and the National Library of Scotland, many more opportunities have been created for performers and researchers to bring to life musical sources that do not belong to the standard Western classical music canon. Projects such as 'Sound Heritage' and 'Transforming Nineteenth-century Historically Informed Performance Practice' are actively using these prints, which were primarily produced for a domestic market to consider music-making practices outwith the established musical canon, an area that has only received dedicated investigation in the last five years. In this respect, the vast quantities of music registered with Stationer's Hall and still held by legal deposit libraries has the potential to uncover further insights into historical performance practices and musical fashions. However, this potential can only be realised if the entirety of the Stationer's Hall repertoire is made publicly available. In this article, I will highlight possible ways to facilitate cross-collaborative projects between performers and the custodians of this material, which enhance the visibility of the collections as well as performance practice research. The use of advanced IT applications has enabled the university libraries to provide innovative library services to their patrons. While the general students are getting all required services from the libraries, the students with visual impairment have continued to face challenges in accessing the library collection. The technology to help overcome these challenges is available today in the form of assistive technology (AT). Unfortunately, a majority of the university libraries in the country do not have this technology in their libraries due to which a huge amount of information stored in the books and journals subscribed by them has become out of reach of the students with visual impairment. The present study was conducted to ascertain the status of AT to support students with visual impairment in university libraries. The study which has covered around 185 universities, provides the first systematic exploration of the status of AT in university libraries in India. The major findings of the study in context of university libraries in India are: 12.97 per cent having Braille Books in their collection; 22.70 per cent have made provision for AT for students with visual impairment; 22.70 per cent have accessible library websites; 21.08 per cent have designated staff members to serve the students with disabilities; 22.70 per cent have 'written disability policy or 'documented minutes' related to the 'library services for the students with disabilities'. - Abstract
The environment in which human being, particularly, students operate makes information to be one of the decisive factors for survival. Students seek information to fill an identified gap in their quest for knowledge. This study, therefore, investigated information needs and seeking behaviour of students of the Nigerian Army School of Education, Ilorin, Nigeria. Five (5) research objectives were formulated for this study. The study adopted descriptive survey research design. Population for the study comprised of students at the Nigerian Army School of Education, Ilorin. Israel (2003) model for determining sample size was used to calculate the sample size with precision levels of 5% and confidence level of 95% and the recommended sample size was two hundred and twelve (212). A simple random sampling technique was used to select the samples from the population. The self-designed questionnaire was divided into six (6) sections. The content-related approach of validation was conducted to ensure the validity of the instrument while Cronbach alpha was used to test the reliability of the instrument and the overall reliability of the instrument was r = 0.832. The collated copies of the questionnaire were analyzed with the IBM SPSS version 21.0 using simple frequency counts and percentage. The presentations of the data for the research objectives were done using tables, pie charts and bar charts. The findings of the study showed that academic information is the major information need of the students of the Nigerian Army School of Education, Ilorin, Nigeria. The findings further revealed that the Internet and library are the most commonly used sources of information. The findings also showed that the major purpose at which the students seek information is to update their knowledge and to enhance their professional activities. However, the findings generally indicated that most students firstly acknowledge their information needs and compare available resources before making the final decision and if they seem not comfortable with the information they need in a particular information material, they will continue searching for information until they are satisfied. Among numerous challenges affecting information seeking behaviour of students, this study found insufficient library opening hours as the major challenge confronting the students of the Nigerian Army School of Education. The study, therefore, recommended that library working hours should be extended to meet the need of the students and that the library management should ensure that adequate collection of books is made available. - Abstract
Gifts and donations form an integral part of an academic library's existence, whether monetary or physical items. While monetary gifts are greatly valued, gift-in-kind donations of physical items can also contribute rare or unique items to collections. However, gift-in-kind donations also bring many challenges, as processing and evaluating physical materials can be time-consuming and labour-intensive; moreover, these materials may occupy significant amounts of space and ultimately may or may not add value to the library collection. Providing clear, publicly available gift and donation information can mitigate some of these challenges and help to set expectations for donors by giving a clear overview of the evaluation process and letting them know which types of material are of interest. The author reviewed donation-related webpages of twenty-one Canadian academic libraries to determine commonalities regarding library donation webpages. This analysis can provide practical assistance to librarians who are creating or revising gift-in-kind policies and procedures in Canadian academic libraries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

NAVAL officers ,HISTORIANS - Abstract
Admiral Carlos Viegas Gago Coutinho was a brilliant naval officer that distinguished himself in the fields of geodesy, communications, navigation and as a historian. He worked intensely in the definition of colonial borders and geodesy in Timor, Congo, West and East Africa and São Tomé e Príncipe. He crossed the African continent on foot, twice (covering about 5200 Kms2 from Angola to Moçambique). Gago Coutinho set more than 2000 Kms of borders using a pedometer and a compass, and laid down triangulations in areas of more than 800 km2. His minute and intensive astronomical sightings demonstrated that the equator passes through the Ilhéu das Rolas, and not between it and São Tomé, as was conventionally accepted. In a joint venture with Sacadura Cabral, they created the -- "Plaqué of Drift", later converted to the -- "Course Corrector". He revolutionized aerial navigation by adapting a sextant with an artificial horizon. From the 30th of March to the 17th of June 1922, along with Sacadura Cabral, he established the first aerial crossing of the South Atlantic between Lisbon and Rio de Janeiro. In 1925, Gago Coutinho was appointed President of the Cartography Commission, being the most senior Board Member and being the author of the largest amount of published works. In the early Thirties he was invited by the German airplane builder Dornier to be the co-navigator of the crew of the huge seaplane Do X, on a voyage to South America during which his sextant was used. At the age of 74, he undertook a trip to Brazil on board the yacht "Foz do Douro", for 105 days and 8740 miles. In this study, we intend to document the life of Carlos Viegas Gago Coutinho, namely the lesser known details, by the study of existing documents in archives, libraries and private collections, most of which have been but recently available. Building up new collections for digital libraries is a demanding task. Available data sets have to be extracted which is usually done with the help of software developers as it involves custom data handlers or conversion scripts. In cases where the desired data is only available on the data provider's website custom web scrapers are needed. This may be the case for small to medium-size publishers, research institutes or funding agencies. As data curation is a typical task that is done by people with a library and information science background, these people are usually proficient with XML technologies but are not full-stack programmers. Therefore we would like to present a web scraping tool that does not demand the digital library curators to program custom web scrapers from scratch. We present the open-source tool OXPath, an extension of XPath, that allows the user to define data to be extracted from websites in a declarative way. By taking one of our own use cases as an example, we guide you in more detail through the process of creating an OXPath wrapper for metadata harvesting. We also point out some practical things to consider when creating a web scraper (with OXPath). On top of that, we also present a syntax highlighting plugin for the popular text editor Atom that we developed to further support OXPath users and to simplify the authoring process. The Field Book Project is an initiative to increase accessibility to field book content that documents natural history - primary source documents that describe the events leading up to and including the collection of specimens or observations during field research. It is a partnership between Smithsonian Institution Archives, National Museum of Natural History, and Smithsonian Libraries. The Project began in 2010 with a grant from the Council for Library and Information Resources (CLIR) to identify, locate, and catalog field books across the Smithsonian Institution. Since then, the Project has cataloged more than 7,500 field books across 8 departments and divisions of the Institution. Field book catalog records were made available to the public for the first time in December 2012 on Smithsonian's Collection Search Center. The Project is now digitizing the cataloged field books which are available on Collections Search Center and Biodiversity Heritage Library. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The FWF-E-Book-Library is the Open Access repository for all stand-alone publications funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF). This collection of e-books is also made available through the OAPEN Library. This paper analyses the usage of the FWF-E-book collection in the OAPEN Library during 2014, in order to measure scholarly impact and societal relevance in the humanities and social sciences. Every time a reader downloads a document, the Internet Protocol address of the provider--an organisation through which the reader accesses the web--is recorded. By combining the usage data and information about the provider, we can make an assumption about who is using a specific monograph. The influence of language is quite profound: books written in German are much more likely to be read within Germany, Austria or Switzerland, while books written in English have a far greater chance to be used all over the globe. Most of the usage is international; only 11% of the total downloads is national. The role of Germany and Switzerland is quite large, amounting to 42% of the total usage. The remaining 47% of the downloads originate from the rest of the world. The role of academic readers is relatively large, compared to governmental, business or non-profit usage. Y et, the biggest group of users have accessed the collection through an ISP. I f the mean downloads per subject are analysed, we see large differences per subject: not all subjects enjoy the same amount of 'popularity'. I t is clear that the collection has a wider reach than academics, and has been read not only in the German-speaking countries, but world-wide. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
